Modeling

I am responsible for implimentating and intergrating a parametric, solid modeling, design system in our company. The biggest obstacle I faced is orenting a well entrenched, 2D oriented, staff of designers and engineers to accept a new way of thinking. We first tried a different parametric modeling program with the prescribed training porgram and the results was disastrous. The software provided the power bu the easy of use we needed and the training was lacking. Autodesk Inventor provides the ppower and the ease of use we needed.

If you are new to parametric modeling then the Inventor software and 'Parametric Modeling with Autodesk Inventor R2' by Randy Shih is a win-win combination. The real value of this book is the discussion of the theory behind the process. In one section Mr. Shih shows in flow chart form the developement of the modeling process. This is invaluable to the user. It's also something you don't get in the Autodesk training. We are planning to use this book as an additional training resource.

The step by step progression through the book brings the user from being imtimitated to being confident with this new software. The types of parts the user creates utilizes the features well. The bonus parts are a great addition, and allows the user to work on his/her own. I also use this book as a reference. It is well laid out and the subjects are easily found.

Autodesk Inventor is new and fast growing. Release 3 is out and R4 is scheduled for release in mid October 2000, with R5 scheduled by years end. If there is a drawback to this book it is because the software is growing faster than the publisher can update it.

In summary, I found this book to be well written and it's context to be pertinent. The author lays a sound foundation of understanding for the user to build on. I recomend this book highly.

Pros: I liked very much this book. It is very well written and easy to read. If you don't like fortran, no matter!! I developed a Matlab code from the explanations on the first two chaps. The subjects covered (from fluid flow and solid deformations to special relativistic motions) are well documented and plenty of examples, making them very easy to follow. I've tryed the method, and I find it a very good one to simulate fragmentation flows.
Cons:The references provided are very good (they're a lot, as well!), but I think that they're not enogh linked with the text. Also, it will be interesting if the book devote a little more emphasis in fluid flow... the book fails (as far as I've seen all the literature in particle modelling using this method fails too) to describe a way to calculate pressure.
Summarizing, you'll find this book is worth your bucks!

Rex Kline easy writing style will take you through step-by-step in one of the most comprehesive yet accessible introductions to multivariate analysis and structural equation modeling. After outlining the building blocks of SEM (multiple regression, path analysis, and factor analysis), Kline gets the reader ready to tackle popular SEM software with examples for AMOS, LISREL and EQS. There is also a great chapter on what NOT to do with this often misused technique. For a preview, see Kline's article in the Journal of Clinical Psychology (1991), Latent variable path analysis: A beginner's tour guide. This book is an excellent read, and a must have for researchers and statisticians.

This book goes into the details of database conception and use. It's not completely up to date but tells you everything on relational databases. from theory to the actual used algorithms.

I used this text at Manhattan College's graduate engineering school and was fortunate enough to be taught by one of the authors. This text covers the material at levels that an undergraduate engineer can grasp, yet is suited perfectly for graduate level training. Written by some of the best people in the business, personally and professionally.

Good coverage for scheduling-type or operations research simulation problems. Great coverage of non-uniform variable distributions, with useful (and hard to find elsewhere) code for generating them, as well as help in choosing which distribution is needed for a given problem. Taught me a lot.

This book shows you how to talk with the internet protocols directly with CAsyncSocket or CSocket. There are examples on how to write a news reader or a mail program. It is the only book I could find with these examples. My only criticism is that its not all one author, so programming styles are inconsistent. A better title for this book would be 'Programming internet protocols with MFC'.

This is great 'jumpstart" book for new INternet users. SHows you how to use Netscape beyond basic browser functionality. Great book.

This book is an excelent help to be aplied over maintenance engeneering and evaluation of the reliabilty in Power installations

This text is an extensive and modern treatment of reliability with many practical case studies. It covers many of the standard topics including most of the topics covered in the recent book by Meeker and Escobar (1998) "Statistical Methods for Reliability Data". It is unique in its coverage of warranties (Chapter 17). These authors are very knowledgeable about the literature on warranty analysis and have edited the Product Warranty Handbook published by Marcel Dekker in 1996 and published their own text dedicated solely to that topic ("Warranty Cost Analysis" published by Marcel Dekker in 1994). Emphasis is placed on case studies which are discussed up front in the Overview chapter and treated in detail in Chapter 19.
