Older but still relevant

This book is really good and includes a lot of information and pictures. It doesn't talk to much about how to obtain a model permit and taxes etc. but does really give a good perspective from a child/parents point of view.

If you can't attend a class, this is the primer you need

I have used the Second Edition for 4 years to help train new college grads and interns in the basics of simulation and to keep myself on track each time I begin a new model-building project (there have been 6 of them in that time). This book is visually interesting and comprehensive, and covers a full range of topics such as reasons to simulate, using probability distributions, presentation of results and including a cost perspective. The level of detail is useful without being intimidating and gives enough information to actually allow one to begin work. Start here if you know little or nothing about simulation. Then once it's fully digested, go get the Banks & Carson or Law books for the academic detail. But this is the book you'll return to time after time for the quick refresher or help putting together the justification presentation. It's very practical - the highest praise I can give a work reference.

Good Accessible Read

This book on interst rates is a pleasurable read. As a trader of interest rate swaps, I find every book on the topic adds something to my knowledge base, and this was better than most for ease of access. Anyone keen to understand all of the related markets, will also want to know more about credit derivatives.

I highly recommend "Credit Derivatives" (2nd Edition) by Tavakoli. The products and their uses are clearly explained, and ties in relative value to the interest rate market. I concede that the models for this product may be trickier because of documentation risk and data issues, but Tavakoli brings clarity to this topic so any interest rate professional can grasp the products and why investors - even hedge funds - are so keen to use them.

Comprehensive books on online chat are too rare. Fortunately, James Powers has written an excellent one. Very little of it is technical, since chat systems tend to be relatively simple to use--even for beginners. Therefore, Powers doesn't waste a lot of time and space discussing arcane controls and commands.

Instead he examines the main online options for chatters, including the chat rooms of proprietary services such as America Online, free areas such as Internet Relay Chat (IRC), and role-playing game areas. He looks at bulletin-board systems, Web conferencing, and virtual places. Video-enhanced chat also gets its moment in the spotlight as Powers discusses CUSeeMe and VideoPhone. However, the bulk of his efforts goes toward discussing the things beginning online chatters often understand least and need most--the social aspects and nuances of interaction by modem. He looks, for example, at the considerations that should go into screen-name selection and the elements of online etiquette. Powers shows how a lack of knowledge of both written and unwritten rules can lead to embarrassment and explains how to avoid accidentally making mistakes. The chapter ":How Not to Be an Online Embarrassment" is excellent, as is the examination of how to identify and cope with different types of online pests. Useful bite-sized problems

This is aimed at the high school level but does an amazingly good job explaining dynamic modeling, difference equations, and scalar contractions at that level. This is good for building intuition since there are a lot of bite-sized problems. The pure mathematical content could be compressed into a book about one-third the size. The author makes interesting connections between classical Greek mathematics and iterative algebra.
