Erlang's World is not Enough
This book addresses in a clear way how simulation can be used to callcenters. You need to know more than average math to master examples, but case studies in appendix are good, since are written by users (with real names and companies). I felt lack of CD with an evaluation version of ARENA software and also examples used in the book. If you still think Erlang is enough, don't ready this book.

Good as an Introduction or Reference Book
This book presents the current and mor well-known models of cognition in the area cognitive science. This includes descriptions of both symbolic and connectionist models (e.g. ACT-R, SOAR, ART-MAP, MAC/FAC, etc.), written by the authors who developed them. However, each chapter presents a somewhat condensed version of each model, so some (but not all) of the technical details are ommitted. Overall, the book can function as an extensive introduction to contemporary methods and issues in cognitive modelling, or as a reference book for those more familiar with the field.

Combustion modeling review
This is a very good book. It format is very succictinct and as such spares no space for unecessary content. This give the narrative a somewhat terse style. It must be remembered that the science of combustion wrestles with some formidable concepts; such as turbulent flow, reduced reaction mechanisms for complex chemical reactions, fluid flow and heat transfer. This is not a book for those who are easily frightened by close typed differential equations. This book however, is an excellent introduction to the science of combustion, and contains a detailed and upto date biblography, pointing the interested reader in the right direction. It also contains one of the most complete tables of kinetic data for combustion reactions, I have seen in published literature. My one regret is that there is no companion volume of solved examples that could be used by an unassisted, but interested student. Read in conjunction with Smith/Missen, computation of chemical equilibrium, and Anderson's excellent introduction to Computational fluid dynamics, and the world of this facinating and most important field opens up.

Computer Graphics & Geometric Modeling by David Salomon
This book is a valuable reference for programmers that want a good introduction to geometric modeling. The book provides enough material to allow you to write many programs dealing with the covered topics. The algorithms outlined in the book are general. They can be adapted to a wide variety of problems, but you must fill in the details. Also, depending on your needs, you may need to consult more advanced books.

Database design and administration may be the last refuge of the true gurus, now that visual languages have made programming more accessible and network administration certifications have proliferated to the extent that they have. Database Design explains the process of building data-storage systems to people who may have hacked around in databases before, but have never really engineered one from the ground up. Though they both specialize in Oracle work as consultants, authors Ryan Stephens and Ronald Plew remain mostly independent of implementation specifics here, focusing instead on generic relationship diagrams that illustrate structure and ANSI-standard structured query language (SQL) for code examples.

Revealing their consultancy roots, Stephens and Plew start with methods of determining business requirements and stay focused on business issues throughout their tutorials. The section on data normalization exemplifies the authors' method of explaining technical issues: they present a considerable amount of prose on why normalization (the process by which "Steve Jones," in entered data, is recognized as the same person as "Stephen P. Jones" where it is appropriate to do so) is a good idea, as well as some of its drawbacks and alternatives. They then present a series of table schema that shows how normalization works in practice. It's a worthwhile read for working and soon-to-be-working database designers. --David Wall

Topics covered: Database design for people who haven't designed databases before or who have done so without the background knowledge they should have had. The authors cover business requirements, entities and relationships, normalization, integrity maintenance, and query design. There are also sections on modifying legacy databases and implementing ancillary features such as security.

Excellent intro to DB Design
After thumbing through a half-dozen books on data modelling and database design, I finally picked up this book. It is the best intro to data modelling that I've come across yet. I've been playing with Oracle and MySQL for a year or so, but I knew I wasn't going to get very far if I didn't know how to build databases from scratch. This book was the first one I've come across that didn't take on the airs of an academic dissertation. Highly recommended for people who want to build Database Analyst skills.

Very Timely Now
Shortly after this book came out in 2000, the US economy peaked, and then tumbled into a recession. During which, and since then, offshoring has become a very hot topic in the US, and also in Europe. Much has already been written elsewhere about the outsourcing of call centers and information technology to India, Phillipines and China, with the anticipation of more outsourcing to inevitably follow.

Which is why this book may be more topical now that just a few years ago, when it came out. It attempts to describe enterprise modelling in a global context. How to measure it and to then use this ability to, as objectively as possible, improve the global competitiveness of a company. The book has descriptions of metrics that can be computed and then compared across companies, for benchmarking. Plus, these measures could also be used across different national subsidiaries of a multinational, say. Or to compare the competitiveness measurements arising from two choices - to develop or maintain some ability inhouse, or to outsource it overseas.
