Poor diagrams
Diagrams are the heart of a book of this kind and I rank this book very very low on the diagrams. I cant imagine poorer diagrams in this day and age. The content is decent, covers a lot of methodologies.

This Book Stands The test of Time
I just recently completed reading this book (Sep 00) and although it is a couple of years old, it is still very relevant to building object-oriented systems today. The notation is not UML - perhaps they should update that - but the content, the tips and techniiques we have found to be very useful indeed at my company.

Worth buying!

Excellent and practical introduction to object technology.
Upon a friend's recommendendation, I purchased this book for an introduction to the world of object technology. Overall, I found the book to be an excellent primer on the subject. Prior to reading the book, I was familiar with the basic principles of the object methodology but had no coherent framework of understanding. This book provides that structure and delivers an understanding of object technology in a coherent and concise manner. What I found particulary useful about the text is that is provided me with a touchstone for design and implementation problems associated with objects. In other words, the book provided a good cheat sheet for impressing my superiors and peers!

Modeling Financial Time Series With S-Plus
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (March, 2004)
Authors: Eric Zivot, Jiahui Wang, and Clarence R. Robbins
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

Useless without FinMetrics module
This book is useless without the S+FinMetrics module.I wish I knew that in advance. Moreover, you can download it for free on www.insightful.com

WITHOUT S+FinMetrics module
This book does NOT come with the S+FinMetrics module. This book contains reviews of advanced time series theory, however, without S+FinMetrics module some part of the book is not insightful. This book is also not of financilal econometrics because there is no financial theory. This is a very good time series book if it comes with S+FinMetrics module.

Combines theory and practice
The best thing about this book is that it combines financial time series analysis with "real-life" examples that are either reproducible or easily adaptable. Being that it is also the user manual for the S+FinMetrics module for the SPLUS stats. package it also reads like a software manual (some people like that). This book provides a good sample of many time series techniques that can be applied out of the box.
Note: The S+FinMetrics module includes this book.

Good book! Lots of details!!
The book is rather long for the CNA test, but very, very good details about commands in Novell. Exercises where O.K. I can't stand crosswords, but if you like crosswords this book is for you. Passed the CNA exam the first time! Good luck if you take the exam!

GOOD, But full of fluff
I found this book very easy to understand, and a good study guide overall. On the other hand, I've never read a "technical" book so full of fluff. By fluff I mean countless stupid ZEN quotes, cheezy "quizes" that weren't even related to NetWare, and numerous other silly captions. The writers could have easily condensed the book by 50% by cutting out all the crap.

VERY Informative Book
I found this book to be VERY informative, it was written in easy to understand text and although technical in nature, I did not get bogged down by it. I would happily reccommend this to anyone who is taking or contemplating taking their CNA

As bad as the first
To be honest, I borrowed this book from a public library because the bad experience from its precedessor The Innergame of Trading had deterred me from wasting my hard earned money on this.

For detailed review please see my review of the Innergame of Trading because the two books are so similar, of very low value and repeating the same basic trading psychology stuff like a successful trader got to have discipline, focus, bravery to cut loss short and let profit ride ba ba ba,. except that the interview part in Outer is about 100 page longer than that in Inner. (160 vs60) However, the quality of the interview content is even lower.

I really cannot appreciate what the authors claimed on the book cover that their book helped the readers to model the trading strategies of Today's Market Wizards. How? Just by going through the lines of the interview. I am afraid that's more diffcult than achieving a 12 month winning streak.

Excellent book for knowledgeable traders
There are many ideas and examples in this book that i found to be very useful to my trading.

Excellent! A must for the serious trader's library!
This book is one of the best that I have read on trading. Its a definite keeper. I have read it several times. The book really helped me overcome some serioius problems in my trading -- and I am an experienced trader. The book gave me a fresh, "ah-ha" perspective to trading. Afterwards, my approach to trading improved dramatically.

While some may think the title is misleading, it really isn't. Once you complete the book, you will be able to better appreciate the circle of trading life the authors take the reader on. The middle section, on "modelling excellence" is a little tedious. But in retrospect, I found this section to be really quite valuable, especially the NLP tools. (In recent years, NLP has been credited for improving peak performers, in many highly competitive areas, e.g., sports, sales, management & military training).

If you find the beginnng a bit slow, then I would recommend you begin by reading the last 2 sections first and then proceed to the beginning and read the book all the way through to the end.

Again, I rate this book a strong buy, if not a market outperform!

Applied Groundwater Modeling
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (February, 2004)
Authors: Mary P. Anderson and William W. Woessner
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

Great book but the cover fell off due to poor binding
A great book for explaining the essentials of groundwater modeling including governing equations and statistical evaluation of numeric modeling. I just wish the publisher could produce a book that the cover didn't fall off within the first couple months of use.

Great content but poor binding
This text was used in my groundwater modeling class and was useful and instructive specifically for GMS and MODFLOW. The binding split after normal use during the quarter to almost every student enrolled in the course.

A great preview of modeling methodology
This text outlines the basic principles and problems faced by young groundwater modelers. The comprehensive interpretation of common challenges are handled with reference to real case studies. Basic steady-state groundwater modeling is supplimented with transient examples. It is a great text for any groundwater modeling class at the undergraduate or graduate level.

so-so
Beautiful pictures though not enough of them. Could use more of everything, but worth pouring over.

Good profile of the supermodels
I don't own this book yet, but have looked at it various times. It gives a good overview of the top models of the time, although this book is dated, and you won't find today's hottest stars like Maggie and Erin.

I'd say that this book is a must in any fashionista's collection.

The perfect book for any supermodel fan!
Whether you're a fashion aficionado or just a supermodel fan, this book delivers not only eye candy (Linda posing as a manniquin), but also info about rising models Emma Blocksage (the platinum blonde Elite of the year winner) and Lonneke (Cover Girl spokesperson).

Nonetheless, the book has an ample amount of pictures of 90's supermodels that you won't need to go anywhere else to re-celebrate to reign of the supermodel.

Outdated but generally OK
This book has been updated since it's first writing, but still contains many many errors.
Hunter covers the material well, and provides a good overview of LA. In general, its a good read and a good attempt at practical, down the earth info for actors. In a world of only marginally helpful books, this one is better than most.
BUT don't use the specifics given (prices, phone numbers, names of people, etc) since many are outdated. My biggest concern was that the author often talks about things being "illegal" when they in fact, are not. They are simply not within UNION rules for the industry. Illegal and against union policy are not the same thing!
Most of my major issues fell within the section on child actors. The vast majority of this information was just plain incorrect. Although she references current topics such as the Coogan Law, the information she gives is misleading...again, applying California rules (the Coogan does not exist anywhere but in California) and union policies with fact. If you are a child actor or parent, beware of this section!
Also, the book often references a web site with resources you can purchase from her (one long commercial--yuck)and yet the web site is not up and running.
A

A great book for actors and actresses moving to Los Angeles!
I picked this book up when it was hot off the press in February and found it to be an invaluable tool for any actor or actress planning on moving to Los Angeles. The book contains thousands of phone numbers for just about anything the working actor needs. It familiarizes you with the city, lets you know what to expect about the field, and encourages you to give it your best. There are chapters that explain all the major guilds and how to be admitted. The book takes you through a guided program on getting headshots, landing an agent, and fitting yourself into the Los Angeles acting market. One chapter is all about finding a night time survival job to pay the bills while you attend auditions during the day. Another chapter covers the audition process and most of the publications in the industry. The only problem with this book is the title. Modeling is mentioned sporadically throughout the book even though the title makes you think that modeling is covered as much as acting. If you are an aspiring model I do not recommend this book. I only recommend this book to anyone planning on pursuing an acting career in the Los Angeles area.

Hollywood Here I come- A Breezy Read
Not only was I hooked on this book ...I finished it in a week..and it is three or four inches thick. This book has lots of tips on the child actor, plus tips on modeling, THIS IS ANY ACTRESS/ACTOR's must have!!!! It has short cuts and life savers jam packed for an affordable price. Be smart..this is the book for you!

Excellent Reference for Windows Server Storage
Given that there are not many references dealing with Windows Server Storage, this book has value for the developer in understanding the nuts and bolts of the technology as well as the administrator in learning how this technology and the operating system interoperate. Dilip Naik succeeds quite well in both areas.

The detail in the hardware requirements, types of devices, communication protocols - all important in understanding the technology if you are going to administer or program for it. How it communicates with Windows and the driver model is of particular interest to me as a Systems Engineer - if it's not functioning properly, I have to know - in detail, how it talks to the OS.

Eliminating layers is the only way to narrow down the possibilities. The diagrams and the associated detail of the kernel, driver, protocol and disk layers are invaluable to the topic at hand.

In the journey through this book, you start with a basic introduction to Windows NT and Windows NT storage devices. This is the basis for all that comes, but may be familiar to many who deal with driver and kernel technology. Next is Direct Attached Storage, Network Attached Storage, and an intro to Fibre Channel SAN. No storage technology is complete without discussion of backup and restoration. And, file systems are an important treatment in the book as well.

There is a chapter on storage management - and for an administrator, clearly this is the area in which the book is light. Much more could have been done with this, but the focus of the book is not on the administrator - but slanted more to aiding the developer in understanding the technology.

IP Storage, iSCSI, and InfiniBand are discussed, as is the Windows spin on the implementations. High Availability and RAID options are expanded upon, as well as some third party options.

Finally is a discussion of storage features by Windows version release, Windows NT, 2000 and Server 2003. Included is a short discussion of what's missing, and a discussion of futures.

Naik does an admirable job in delivering a book dealing with complex technology and attempting to provide information in which infrastructure technologists as well as developers can glean value from it. Though there is no code in the book, that's not the goal - it's about the technology.

If you're looking for a good reference in Windows Storage Technologies (and the supporting hardware, firmware, and software), this is one that should find it's way onto your shelf.

Good intro to various storage systems
I found certain chapters way above my head ( I am a software person, not hardware) but other chapters, especially the ones dealing with SANs and RAID configurations) incredibly useful. It answered a lot of questions I had on the different RAID configurations

Nice introduction to Windows Storage Features
This was kind of book which I was looking for sometime. Generally, one finds lot of books on Storage Technologies, SAN, Fibre Channel etc, written with system administrative perspective. This book is the next step. It gives nice technical intrduction of storage technologies and how they have been implemented on Windows Server. It is good resource for sys admins and management folks who want to understand storage feature in greater detail. The language is nice and easy. Though, sometime you feel the flow is not very smooth and its jerky sometimes. It covers pretty much all the storage features available on Windows. I believe this book is a good step in the right direction. It is technical to some level but obviously not enough for a system level programmer. Some of the details are missing( which might be intentional). Topics need to exploded further so that it can serve as a great reference. The book does not point to some of the challenges facing Windows Server Storage

Kids on Camera: A Comprehensive Guide to Child Modeling and Acting

Good basic information.
This book helped me get started in researching my daughter's potential for modeling. It provides a good overview of the basics, but it also made me want to find another book with more details.

Extremely informative.
This book offers a wide variety of information which would be helpful for anyone considering entering the modeling of acting business with their child. It brought up some very good points that I had not previously considered. This book provides a good foundation of knowledge about the modeling/acting business..

Easy and interesting
This is a really great book. It is easy and interesting to read and covers alot. The book is arranged really well and answers a lot of questions you may have. The book contains lots of pictures to expand on the text. It is one of the best books on child modeling I have read. Another is the Wilhelmina's world of child modeling book.

Trash, but page-turning trash.
I guess I wasn't looking for real literature when I picked up this book, but then again I was looking for something a little less....well, fluffy. The characters were all two-dementional (barely) and stereotypical (you could pick out the bad guys from their first words), the story was contrived (you spend the first few pages waiting for the mighty to fall and then spent the rest of the time waiting around until they come back to the top), and the glimse into the real world of modeling I expected was something I'd read in a tabloid or seen on E! many times before....however I was sucked in until the end. The sub-plots weren't finely woven additions to the story, but simply after-thoughts added to assist the ending. Borrow this for mindless reading on the beach...don't waste your money.

This is an exciting peek into the structure behind modeling.
I thought The Look was an excellent book and I just recommended it to a friend. It is surprising and original and I'm glad I got the chance to read it.

Awesome book
This book has kept me going like no other book I have ever read. Nina Blanchard does an excellent job of exposing th real modeling world. The characters and storyline are so real you wouldn't know it was fiction. I definately would recoend this boo to anyone.
