The chapters on object -> RDBMS mapping and implementation using non-OO languages are worth the whole book!

It's outdated because it uses the OMT, I would really thanks Rambaugh if he could write a new edition!

Lets face it, this is the best book to get started on Object Oriented Programming. An object is still an object, whether you show it in a cloud or in a box. Plus this book has some valuable tips on programming the right way, and puts reusability in perspective. Its written in extremely readable fashion, quite unlike some of the UML documents out there. The only thing that bothers me is the price tag, which seems to be a bit high.

A landmark in OO literature: always was and always will be. Taking things from step zero to discussing very advanced issues. The notation used is the one where UML has borrowed most of its elements (especially the class diagrams). The process it describes has become the typical process for OO development (especially 2nd generation OMT as described through a series of articles in JOOP by Rumbaugh). In all, a book that leaves nothing uncovered from notation to process and more importantly in depth discussions on OO concepts and techniques that will always be true. Finally, this is one of the few books that discuss how to implement an OO design into a non-OO language such as C, Pascal, Fortran etc. END

This book covers a wide scope of Apache configurations and operation mechanisms, though so few practical examples present. If you want to gain deep insight into Apache 2, go to another book.

Setting up my first Apache server, I found this book to be an invaluable aid. It discusses Apache's range of capabilities, explains the internal processes involved in serving Web sites, and illustrates typical configuration options. The explanations are simple, straightforward, and organized, and the writing style is encouraging. If I have any complaint, it is that I ran into more build/installation snags with several third-party Apache add-ons than the book predicted. Your mileage will no doubt vary.

Although the title of the book is Apache 2, and it contains full information about it, I learnt from it all the basic things you need to know related to web servers. Being a complete beginner, I learnt not just about Apache, but also about what are SSL, PHP, CGI's, Proxy servers and Tomcat through the book. Everything is explained in plain english and easy to understand. Each chapter has an introductory section that makes it much easier to understand. It's like having the author by your side guiding you.

I found the content repetitive and the points laboured. The information provided could have been easily presented in 10 pages. Instead the author attemps to over-complicate the topic and confuse the reader. I'm not sure who he is trying to impress, but he didn't impress this reader. E-mail connectivity is an important technology. Getting it right can be the difference between a low maintenance, efficient, fast infrastructure and a painfully slow, troublesome and unreliable one. Unfortunatly this book only succeeds in clouding the issues involved.

I bought this book expecting it to cover a much wider area of connectivity.

It focuses on X.400 and particulary SMTP connectivity, not what I really wanted. But it does cover those areas really well.

As well, as just looking at Exchange, the author covers more related technology areas. Good information from the real world.

I bought this book based on my experience that the Digital Press series offers the best books on email in the industry. Kieran McCorry meets that challenge! His writing easily matches that of Redmond, Rhoton, Collin, Avolio and Vixie.

This book served as my introduction to Eclipse, and I found it not as helpful as just playing with Eclipse itself. After play time was over, I went to the book again, and saw some improvements that I could have used.

I don't mean to say that the book is bad. It's a little overweight with Java references, true, but it still covers one of the best Java IDEs available, and the fact that it's better than many commercial IDEs just makes it more pleasing.

I believe I got this book when I wasn't ready for it, or when I wasn't the main target audience, and that this may skew my perception of it. In any sense, the book just wasn't my piece of pie, but I can see it being someone elses.

This is the best and only work on the Eclipse Modeling Framework, which is the code generation engine built into the Eclipse IDE. It's a solid work, but it's one flaw is that it is neither a completely how-to book, nor is it completely architectural work, so it will probably frustrate most readers to some degree. This is the only reason I didn't give it a perfect rating.

If you have used Eclipse to program Java, you might have gotten comfortable with its capabilities. Very intuitive and kindly donated by IBM to open source. So when I opened this book, I anticipated oodles of helpful tweaks and shortcuts.

But not so. IBM has indeed provided these in the book. But their goals were far more ambitious. The Eclipse Modelling Framework is a serious effort to incorporate into a development environment java, XML and UML. They found, perhaps correctly, that most Java programmers, including, and maybe especially the experienced ones, don't really use UML much. Okay, as an afterthought, to document a code base upon a major release. But rarely as a starting point. So one intent is to seamlessly let java programmers incorporate UML. More strongly, they claim that EMF lets you define a model in any of java, XML or UML. Then simply clicking a button will make EMF generate the other 2 forms. The greatest payoff for this is that it lets programmers, who may not be fluent in UML, make a graphical UML model and thence have EMF make the java code stubs. Much less error prone than doing it manually.

There is an analogy here with Spice, if any of you have an electrical engineering background. Until the late 80s, if you wanted to model a circuit in Spice, you typically drew it by hand on paper. Then you manually transcribed these into a text file of netlists that was input into Spice. Slow and very error prone. Then along came MicroSim, Carver Mead's Magic program and others, that let you construct a circuit diagram on a console, and from which you could press a button and a Spice input file would be made. Much more productive.

The book offers a similar gain in productivity. All you are asked to risk is your time in understanding the book.

After reading this book, it is obvious to me the this author is highly competent technically, and also a very skillful writer.

If you ingnore the title, then I feel that this is a well written and informative book.

Unfortunately, I feel it had very little to do with IIS administration. The cover declares it to be a "COMPREHENSIVE REFERENCE", don't believe it.

This book is a very good introduction to web page design, with chapters on Frontpage 98 and Visual Interdev, while IIS installation is relegated to a mere appendix.

More than the first half of the book chapters are classed into categories such as "Developing Basic Web Site Content", etc. , and while it may be useful to many IIS admins who also happen to develop their site. It is not in my opinion, what IIS Admininstration is all about.

Wyatt provides a reference that is across the board in terms of technical knowledge. Having been given the challenge of tying our in-house databases as an auxiliary website to our .com site, I found this book to hold most of the answers. He goes into step-by-step detail in many areas, but falls a little short of giving readers a broad view of applying the principles. A great reference that finds its way off the shelf and onto my desk a lot!

This book is a complete reference on IIS. From the start it takes you through IIS in a very readable form, and has all of the infofrmation needed for the beginner to the advanced IIS admin. A good book, buy it!

This one's for rookies and lizard-lovers. Ken Brilliant sure knows his dinosaurs, but there's precious little here that's professionally enticing. Three things: (a) know a bit of organic poly modeling, (b) understand UV space & texture mapping, and (c) (most importantly) have a good imagination and an equally good reference image of your favorite dinosaur (or dinosaur-like creature). That pretty much is the gist of this book, though I'd have preferred it if the author had focused on modeling just one or two generic dinosaurs (he covers the usual suspects) and carried it through detailed texturing/mapping, into animation (what use is a dinosaur that can't raise hell in your backyard, or your PC, for that matter?). The book does a fair job of familiarizing you with these prehistoric reptiles, and helps recreate a fraction (a teeny-tiny fraction) of what Mr.Spielberg/ILM did about a decade ago - of course, minus the animation part, which obviously wasn't intended. (Pity.) So, if you're a rookie or a lizard-lover, you might benefit from the modeling/texturing instructions presented here. For others, there isn't much here that's spectacular or "wow" enough to add speed to your web site, portfolio, or employment chances. Invest in a good reference image instead, or find something that goes deep enough to help create something more than just a Hollywood cliche.

Being new to Lightwave I have been buying as many books as possible to lessen the learning curve. The massive volume that is the Lightwave manual, whilst having all the great features listed, does not help a new user actually model very much. Enter Ken Brilliants new (and first) book. A 370 page romp through his very own Jurassic Park. The book is not software specific and Ken gives a list of software that can be used in conjunction with the tutorials and these include Lightwave, Maya, C4D, Amapi, 3DSmax etc. Any software, if fact, that has a polygon based set of tools.
He covers modeling, UVmapping and texturing and manages to help you create an Apatosauras, Dimetrodon, Pteranodon, Triceratops and of course the ubiquitous T-Rex. The tutorials start with very basic instructions and are written in a clear, logical manner. I found that I learnt more about my software of choice in one afternoon than I had done in the previous three weeks.

The book states that Ken works in Hollywood in the film and television industry. His work can be seen in a variety of movies and television series including Jurassic Park 2: the lost World, X-Files the movie, Interview with a Vampire, The Starship Troopers Chronicles and a variety of others. With a list like that it gives you an idea of the quality that is to be found in 'Digital Dinosaurs'.

I am a designer who is attempting to delve into the world of 3D. In comes Brilliant's book on Dinosaurs, but the kicker is that what you learn in this detailed and simple to follow book can be applied to much more than dinos. Very well written and illustrated (great image files included on the CD). With a minimal knowledge of most 3D apps, you can start creating some neat stuff. I also like the fact that texturing is greatly discussed in later chapters. This book fills a definit publication niche specifically dealing with organic or creature modeling, dinosaurs in this case. I wish this book would have been included in most 3D application packages as part of their documentation...one can only wish!

I am having a hard time imagining who this book would be useful for. If you are new to GIS, the explanations are pretty dry and contain a good deal of jargon, and there are absolutely NO examples or how-to's. You cannot read this book and expect to learn to do even the simplest operation in GIS. Moreover, without concrete examples, its hard to conceptualize how it all fits together. On the other hand, for someone like me, pretty familiar with basic GIS but wanting to get into more depth, it was too elementary and repetitive. For example, I can't count how many times the author says there are 3 basic kinds of data in a geodatabase... Except for the last 3 chapters (rasters, TINs and location finders) there was little I didn't already know, at least intuitively.

The book is very nicely produced, however. It gives the feel of Powerpoint slides plus the narrative you would hear if you went to an ESRI workshop. Literally every piece of information is explained both graphically and in the text. And of course as software books go, its not too expensive. However, you can get most of this information for free, from the extensive help files that come with ArcView -- plus examples and how-to-use-the-software instructions.

If you're just getting started with GIS, there are lots of getting-started books out there. If you need a lot of depth, try Zeiler's ArcObjects 2-volume set (yes, same author, but much more meaty).

I really like this book... It's well-written, and I am finding it helpful for understanding some of the concepts new to the world of ArcGIS.

HOWEVER, to be a useful reference, there needs to be a much, much larger and comprehensive index. That's plain frustrating.

This is a good book to learn geodatabase. I expect the author to add more explanations and examples about modeling geodatabase.

I haven't had a chance to read the book yet, but it appears helpful from the parts that I have scanned.

I like the book in question. It covers several fields of DNS and BIND administrating not seen in other books. It also cover advanced fields like for example DDNS. It is clear that the writer knows what he is talking about.

I feel that the book is not for the first-timer in DNS, although it gives a good overview of those items too. You should know a little, and then this book explains why things are the way they are and how to fix your many errors... For people who have looked at DNS, maybe dabbled a litte, it is a great way to learn it the proper way.

Sadly, the Que-layout isn't up to O'Reilly standard, but if you ignore that, it is a really good book.

I liked this book. It covers interesting and relevant fields (DDNS, security concerns, how to interface with DNS from different languages, ...) in addition to the basics, in enough depth to be really useful. It is practical and down-to-earth, with thorough examples, explaining how things work and why. It definitely helped me grok the ideas and concepts behind DNS.

Here is a novel concept for a book: let's teach someone how to program in a language without code. Can it be done?

The answer, of course, is yes ... if you rely on the Visual Studio .NET IDE, which this book does. More than a book on coding, this book is a step by step on how to create code with the Visual Studio .NET IDE, without actually writing code.

This is not all bad, of course, as you can write some decent applications using this technique. However, it would have been nicer, if this was their intention, to include some screen shots. This book does not.

On the plus side, there is an awful lot of theory in this book. This alone may make this a useful addition to your library. If you want to really learn to code Visual Basic .NET, go elsewhere.

I am a VB 6.0 developer for quite a few years now and when the .NET framework kicked off I was a bit confused about the new way of developing .NET applications. I have read a few tutorials about the new technology and the new programing architecture but was still confused.
I found this book on the net and read the reviews, two positive two negative, still decided to buy it and I don't regreat it. It is worth the money.
It is true that the book has the minimum code needed for a programming book, but remember the title doesn't say "CODING VISUAL BASIC.NET APPLICATIONS". The title on the cover of this book is "DESIGNING VISUAL BASIC.NET APPLICATIONS". If you are an experienced programmer on any of the other languages you will now that the first step to creating a succesfull application is the designing stage. Then you go to coding. If you are one of those people that want to do the coding before the design then this is the wrong book.
If you are looking for a book that does both, designing and coding, then this book is not for you, then you have to look for a book that has at least 2500 pages, a CD-ROM included and of-course will cost like eight times this book.
But if you are looking for enough information to desing .NET applications and start thinking on the new way of developing for .NET then this is the right book for you.Autor goes deep on explaining the theory behind the .NET architecture, the need for migrating to .NET and gives you more then enough information about the new beast out there called .NET.
It helped me clear out a lot of things there were mixed on my head, being used to develop on VB 6.0.
If you are a serious developer and you read and learn, to learn and know then this book is one of the books that need to be in you bookshelf. Othervise by one of the books that say ".... VB.NET COMPLETE" read about all the possibilities of the new language but never learn any of them.
Offcourse this is not the book that will teach you everything. You need to buy some more books to learn the coding technologies. There is a lot of good books out there on coding like BIBLE series (Good for beginners), quite a few on the reusable objects and components, and at the very end you have the UNLEASHED series for the most serious developers. You will never find a book that references all the ends of programming. You have to buy a couple to get where you want and I think this is one of them.

This book is about design and technique. There are lots of examples of how to do the right thing but the book doesn't deluge you with page after page of code samples. Instead they cut to the chase and show you just the portion of the code that makes a difference. This is a great book for anyone from beginner to moderately experienced VB program who is moving over to VB.Net and wants to learn how best to do it. I highly recommend this book.

This book isn't worth the money. I bought it for my daughter who told me it was worthless. I was upset at her attitude but then read it myself. Sadly she was correct, if a bit ungrateful.

Good tips but I was shocked at how few pages there were. Not worth its cost.

As the mother of a child model I found this book to be extremely helpful in avoiding the many pitfalls of this difficult industry. Highly recommended!
