Learn C++ datastructures, finaly a nice book!
Yes finaly a nice book with nice examples about datastructures.

You can read -and understand- the book if you are a mature beginner in the language C++. This book will gide you through diferent concepts of structures: beginning at the begin, ending at the end. The following subjects are included:

- Array container classes and iterators (a bit on templates)
- Vector container classes and iterators
- Single linked list objects
- Double linked list objects
- Stack and Queues
- Binary search trees
- AVL trees
- B trees
- Binary Heaps and Priority Queues
- Sorting and searching
- Hash tables
- Dictionaries
- Some example chapters

- Template Appendix !!!

**** ps: Now I have red more books about this subject, I found some very unpleasent errors! the calculation in the: AVL Tree is incorrect, B Tree is incorrect and (!!) the Binary Heap dus't work properly (buildHeap). Nevertheless this is a nice book to read, aslong you know the errors.

The best Data Structures book
All I can say is "WOW" when it comes to this book. Do you want a book the elucidates those hard to understand Data Structure concepts like B-Trees? This is the book. Do you want succinct? This is the book.

Jan Harrington does a phenomenal job in the introduction of Data Structures. Then she goes onto applying those concepts using classes, template types, and other OOP techniques! This is the only Data Structures book I will recommend thus far.

excellent book but...
What makes this book special and worth 5 stars:
1. easy to follow and detailed diagrams.
2. Self-desribing coding convention (really self-commenting).
3. Doesn't directly promote Design patterns but provides smartly layered approach between sample apps and the structures presented.
4. Provides sample applications with memory & disk based structures.
5. In most parts of the book, simple type,semi-base object (node), and Template implementations are presented for the data structure.
However, sometimes, it feels like just another 'code dump madness' book!
I wish if the Author provided files with carriage return+linefeeded
because if you don't have a MAC, you will have to manually convert every file or windows compilers rightfully complain about it. Source files need to be updated to reflect ISO C++ standard and remove some other errors. For example, standard '#include headerFile' should be without extention. In AVL tree there are very obvious errors; overloading (definition doesn't match with is being declared),paramater type errors. This should not effect the quality of this book as long as source code can hopefully be updated because its a major spoiler. C++ stl library HOPEFULLY will utilized in the next version of this book without creating custom strings, stacks, queues, lists ...etc.

Quantitative Analysis of Movement: Measuring and Modeling Population Redistribution in Animals and Plants
Published in Paperback by Sinauer Associates, Inc. (March, 1998)
Author: Peter Turchin
Amazon base price: $49.95
Average review score:

Very good, but...
Peter Turchin's "Quantitative Analysis of Movement" is the best (only?) available synthesis of techniques appropriate for analyzing movement patterns. Turchin addresses general concepts, techniques for measuring movements, movement models (mostly diffusion-based), techniques for analyzing movement paths, and mark-recapture techniques. Be aware, however, Turchin's analysis is more appropriate to displacement and redistribution questions and less suited for those interested in inferring motivation from movement trajectories.

This is an intensely mathematical treatment, so be prepared. Turchin is kind enough to provide a special appendix, "Diffusion for Ecologists," for those with relatively weak mathematical backgrounds (like myself). Not easy to understand but well worth the effort.

Excellent Practical Reference
I wrote my Master's thesis on the movement of grasshoppers and almost wore this book out! It became my bible. While I was writing up, you'd always see me with it under my arm. It addresses all of the major movement models from an applied standpoint. The original papers are rarely useful if you wish to actually apply the model to your own research. This book is written more like a text than a review, but is still very thorough mathematically. If you're doing research on movement or are just interested in mathematical models in ecology, this book is a must have.

From the review by Peck, S. L. 1999. Ecology 80: 1451.
"If you are engaged in research exploring plant and animal movement, this book is essential. It is well written and informative from both practical and theoretial perspectives. It is a delight to have this reference. I recommend it wholeheartedly."

Excellent TCP/IP Instruction and reference
I had the pleasure of writing a review for the inside flap of this book, and would like to add to it here.

TCP/IP is an excellent book for anyone looking to learn TCP/IP as it is integrated and expanded upon for Windows 2000. It also servers as an excellent piece of reference material; everything is layed out in a manner in which information can be found quickly. This book covers all of the major topics dealing with TCP/IP from the actual architecture of TCP/IP to how it is implimented in certain types of networks, and more. In addition to the index where you can find instances of any topic that is covered in the book, every chapter is very well named and very effectively describes the contents of the chapter. In fact, listing the chapters would even suffice as an overview of what you can learn from the book.

Chapter 1: TCP/IP Architecture for Windows

Chapter 2: TCP/IP Protocols Infrastructure for Windows Networks

Chapter 3: Windows 2000 TCP/IP Implementation Details

Chapter 4: NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NBT)

Chapter 5: Installing the TCP/IP Protocol and Services

Chapter 6: Configuring TCP/IP

Chapter 7: TCP/IP Configuration Using the Registry and Perl

Chapter 8: TCP/Ip Protocol Traces

Chapter 9: Routing and Remote Access with Microsoft TCP/IP

Chapter 10: DHCP Configuration and Management

Chapter 11: TCP/IP Name Resolution Using WINS Windows 2000

Chapter 12: Windows 2000 Domain Name System Service

Chapter 13: Net Management for Microsoft Using SNMP

Chapter 14: Network File System Protocol Support for Microsoft Networks

Chapter 15: TCP/IP Mail and News Services fot Microsoft Network

Chapter 16: Monitoring and Optimizing TCP/IP Performance

Chapter 17: Kerberos Security in Windows 2000

Chapter 18: Implementing IPSec in Windows 2000

Chapter 19: Virtual Private Networks

The book contains detailed information about the structure of a variety of packets as well as protocols. It also breaks down the concepts of Windows 2000 DNS, WINS, DHCP, and other services and protocols that you must know if you are going to be dealing with networks that include support for Windows 2000, NT or 9x.

Karinjit Siyan does it again.
It doesn't get any better than this book. I'm comparing this with the other books such as Sybex and Osborne. Mr. Siyan can make any complicated topic understandable. I love the traces section, SNMP, IPSEC, and DNS. I also recommend Mark Minasi. The 2 top W2K masters are Karinjit Siyan and Mark Minasi. You have to get this book if you want to get a technical advantage over the average system engineers.

Great book!
Very useful indepth explanation of TCP/IP and how it works with Windows 2000. Chapter on TCP/IP implementation details explains how it has been implemented on Windows 2000 and I like the protocol traces. Lots of info on TCP/IP registry parameters.

BEST FOR 3D
MY AUTOCAD INSTRUCTOR, JOHN LARSON RATED TOP REFERENCE TEXT FOR 3D. HE ALSO STATED THAT THIS IS THE ONLY REFERENCE BOOK HE EVER BOUGHT IN HIS CAREER OF TEACHING.

Great way to learn
I bought this book with little 3D experience, hoping it would help guide me. I work in a small company and I am the only CAD user, so there isn't any help in the next office. This book taught me how to use 3D drawings to produce prints in probably a third of the time it used to by drawing all three views. Plus, in our shop, isometric views are almost a must to understand many prints, which has reduced our production time greatly. I am fairly well versed now in 3D, but I still reference the book almost weekly.

I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have time for courses and understands 2D construction.

Great for starters
Can't beat the price. Covers the basics on just about every aspect of automotive modeling. I recently started building again and this book has definitely helped. Starts off with tools you'll need to start building. Information on detailing engines and chassis(s),interior(s), exteriors, tires, etc. Discusses painting techniques for detailing and exterior finishes. I highly recommend this book if you are starting in the hobby or even if you've been building for years. I guarantee you will learn a new trick.

Great for the Beginner
This book covers the basics very well, and actually has some more advanced topics too. The content is well written and the pictures are excellent. It covers everything from start to finish. I looked for a book specific to plastic aircraft models, but this book does the trick and applies to the basics for all plastic models.

A helping hand to 'true' novices
Having read this book and completed the tutorials, it has enabled me to take my first step into the world of 3D modelling. The author's style is entertaining and practical at the same time, which makes it quite accessible and relatively easy to digest. However, I feel that in some areas, the content was simply too brief and 'rushed'. As a result, I feel that it is a bit too expensive for what it has to offer. I could have got a Truespace 'bible' for the same price!

Impossible to put down
This book is great, it has everything for the beginner wanting to start in the 3D modelling world. It explains all the tools and gives you tasks to complete with screen shots of how it should look, and most of all Really enjoyable.

Provides solid Information
This book will take you from knowing nothing about autocad or MDT to the point where you feel confident modeling. It is too the point with good exersises and layout. Very easy to understand. The only point it lost me is when it had me draw a title block to for representing a 2D drawing. I belive they assumed that you knew autocad before hand only in that instance but it was not vital. Further reading will be desired to learn more advanced techniques after you are finished. This program could not be summed up in one book anyhow it is too massive.

Not top of the line but definitely a must have book!
The lesssons are in simple terms and short, to the point. They are easy to understand for users with little to zero experience. Try out the first lesson by downloading it on line. You will be plesantly surprised!

I strongly recommend this book.
I got two MDT4 books and I am very surprised how good this book is. At the first glance, the other MDT book appeared to have a nicer cover, but that is all. This book, Parametric Modeling with MDT 4, covered the important aspects of how to use MDT with practical examples. The other book covered only about 40% of the material covered in this book. I strongly recommend this book. The content of this book is definitely superior.

nice coverage of advanced topics with emphasis on modeling
Frank Harrell is a Professor who does a lot of consulting in medical research. This book covers a wide variety of topics in regression analysis including many advanced techniques including data reduction, smoothing techniques, variable selection, transformations, shrinkage methods, tree-based methods and resampling. But note the title "Regression Modeling Strategies". Unlike most advanced texts in regression this book emphasizes modeling strategies. So the focus is on things like variable selection and other techniques to avoid overfitting models and diagnostics to look for violations in assumptions such as variance homogeneity or normality and independence of residuals, or stability problems like colinearity.

The book covers an extensive collection of modern techniques for exploratory data analysis. Inferential methods are also considered and he deals appropriately with important issues (particularly for medical research) such as imputation of missing values. Many examples are considered and illustrated in S-PLUS.

Harrell also provides many rules of thumb based on his own experience building models. A lot of the techniques are illustrated using data from the Titanic where it is interesting to see which factors affected the probability of survival. My only disappointment was that there is perhaps too much emphasis on this one particular data set.

A standard regression text would be expected to include linear and nonlinear regression. Harrell goes much deeper including nonparametric regression, logistic regression and survival models (e.g. the Cox proportional hazards model).

You need to be an expert in statistics to understand this..
This is clearly an advanced text that mathematicians and PhD students in statistics would find valuable. It is not for an engineer or novice statistican in industry (like myself) who has to come up with an accurate regression model with quantitative and qualitative data in a short period of time. My rating is four stars: buy this book only if you have the advanced statistical training to understand it, otherwise buy a simpler book if you want to get a basic understanding of the subject.

Outstanding graduate text
This text does a five star job of what the title advertises. The book could be used for a one year graduate course in applied linear models. The writing is excellent, and topics very up to date. This is for graduate students with a good foundation in mathematical statistics and applied statistics. Very good integration with modern statistical packages.

a must-have for communication system simulation
The second edition is a much-improved version compared to the first one. More details are added -- which makes it easy to follow. Anyone who is doing system simulation or performance analysis should have one around. I would have rated it a 5-star if the authors should have included some of the algorithms in a CD to save reader's time.

A must for anyone who simulates communication systems!
A great reference for those involved with signal-level simulations of communication systems. Provides superb coverage of both the fundamentals and advanced concepts associated with this "artform."

Bible on simulation of communication systems
It's an essential part of a Communications Engineer Library. You just can't do without this book.
