good backround
How do you write a review by multiple authors who are authorities in the respective fields of each chapter? Carefully. Does the review need to contain the usual metaphors which when finally finished leave a prospective researcher with feelings of Oprah's book store. No. So let's start. The book contains general overall experimental setups on the "dry" sort, giving the broad over all design or outline of the direction of the model (read calculations) then includes the formulas at the end each chapter. Extremely nice for incorporation into MathCad or Matlab. (this is not as simple as it sounds, moving a high verbage book into something meaningful on a computer can't always be with as much style and grace as one wants). Most of the models however are, for want of a better discripter, "realistic".I guess this means they are not movies. Whether a model is done using ionic balanced equations or transfer functions seems somewhat academic to me as long as the information gained is useful. The level at which one can "view" these models certainly depends on the math and assets one can throw at the problem. As an example without to much "sweat" most of the cable equations, represented either as diffusion or electrical can be simulated far better in Matlabs PDE toolbox using Finite Element Methods. This allows the model to be viewed from the same point of view at different aspects. And why some kind of transfer functions cannot be made, and used in classical control theory, I'm working on now. Most of the equations using standard algebraic formulas work better in Mathcad using iterative range variables in extinction type modeling. This allows for the injection of pharmalogical testing data based on frequency manipulation, along digital signal processing lines. And running out of room, why not just take the data, use it to train a neural net and then use a Segueno fuzzy inference system to solve for the equations of state, which works very well for large systems (heart)such as the McKay-Glass non-linear types?

Brilliant...as usual
The Digital Press Exchange series for the past several years (since Exchange 5.x) have been the benchmarks on all things Exchange. This book is no exception. Exchange 2003 isnt that different from it's predecessor, but this book covers all the new features very well (and unlike the Exchange 2000 version of this book - it isnt based on a RC).

Buy it.

Here we have a modern Flight Dynamics treatise!
Comments on
"Modeling and Simulation of Aerospace Vehicle Dynamics"

Here we have a modern Flight Dynamics treatise!

Dr. Zipfel presents his book as an account of Modeling and Simulation techniques; in fact, it is much more: it is, as we just said, a modern, exhaustive and deep Flight Dynamics treatise.

In the first six chapters, where Dr. Zipfel presents the theoretical foundations of Flight Dynamics, he introduces the reader to the very powerful, elegant and concise Tensorial formulation (which is uncommon except in very few, specialized reports), which is elevated to an axiomatic level ("from tensor modeling to matrix coding", in his words). This formulation, when applied to the Rational Mechanics and Modeling chapters(2 to 6), should allow the undergraduate (or recently graduated) student to see and enjoy the power and beauty underlying in these old physics branch. These chapters could configure an excellent text as part of a Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering graduated level Rational Mechanics course (which we will intend to verify in the following course at National University of Córdoba, Argentina).

The second part of the book (which we should define as the "Aerospace" part), is devoted to Aerospace System simulation itself: beginning (in Chapter 7) with a blow of fresh air on our old, loved Perturbation Equations introducing the reader in the specificities of the Flight Dynamics (i.e. Aerodynamic forces and moments modeling), Dr. Zipfel leads with the most awkward part of Dynamics Analysis: The modeling of complete vehicles (regardless they are planes, missiles, launch vehicles or spacecrafts), in which the range of subsystems, and links between them, involved may feel sick to the beginner (and, sometimes, to experienced engineers). Again, beginning with basics (3-D.O.F. modeling), the reader is conveyed in a simultaneously strict an pleasant way to the deeps of full 6-D.O.F. simulations, including items such as Control, Guidance and Navigation Systems, Seekers, full non-linear aerodynamics and stochastic effects. The specialized engineer will find these Chapters as primary reference for any concrete modeling task.
The primary tool used by Dr. Zipfel in his task is CADAC software (Computer Aided Design of Aerospace Concepts), which we see as one of the bests Aerospace Simulation open codes available worldwide. Its modularity, documentation and completeness allow the reader to quickly understanding, as well as to perform modifications to suit it to specific needs. This software is highly valuable both for students and specialized engineers needed to develop simulation tools.

In brief, we found Modeling and Simulation of Aerospace Vehicle Dynamics a great book for both engineering students and specialized engineers; everybody will enjoy reading it, because its elegant and concise notation and its deep and rigorous mathematical treatment, as well as the powerful tools that Dr. Zipfel puts in the engineers' hands. This book should be on the desk of any simulation engineer as a primary reference in his day-to-day job.

Modeling Axisymmetric Flows: Dynamics of Films, Jets, and Drops
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (August, 1995)
Author: Stanley Middleman
Amazon base price: $91.95
Average review score:

Excellent textbook for novices and experts
This book is both extremely clear and quite detailed. Its the kind of book you can use as a novice to the field to see the examples and approach to modelling, or that you can use as a reference book if modelling fluid flow is your thing.

Most modelling fluid flow textbooks start wity infinite resevior, not small scale drops and flows covered here. Well written, well structure, technically excellent.

QUANTITATIVE MODELING WITH VIGOR!
What distinguishes this book from other neuronal modeling books? Firstly, it contains a solid quantitative flavor necessary for real advances in neural networks. Secondly, it places an emphasis on neuronal models not encountered in computational neuroscience. Thirdly, it is written with authority by some well known names in the field. Each chapter is self-contained and written in a didactic fashion with a future perspectives section and a problem set. The contents range from stochastic fluctuations of ionic channels to morphologically realistic neural networks. Some features include: Lanczos matrices to construct fully equivalent cables, application of Maxwell equations to derive the cable equation, and a chapter devoted to nonlinear cable theory co-authored by one of the founders of theoretical biophysics. This book is thoroughly recommended to anyone who is serious about neuronal modeling.

Finally a comprehensive book
This is among the finest books for modeling MEMS. Most other books give a mish-mash of fabrication and modeling, but you never figure out how to model!! This one is different. This is the gold standard for MEMS books to come.. I picked it up along with many other MEMS books from the library, never thought I would use it, but this is the ONLY book I use. Good even for the the advanced MEMS designer as a quick reference. But great for a new reader who wants to grasp the fundamental of modeling.
