The "Aha!" of object-modeling
Should be called Model EngineeringIt is both a philosphical and technical blueprint for the modeling process: forget use cases and such. This is about modeling the domain using twelve pattern players that, alone and in combination, describe virtually all domains. Twelve simple pieces that can be snapped together to make extremely complex models that are robust, resilient and extensible. Amazing stuff.
At 400 pages this is the perfect size book: there is no bloat...just a fortright exposition that well explained and diagramed. This isn't a book burdened with UML (I have a beginners guide to UML that is about the same thickness...UML has lost its way: it's become ridiculously bloated and cubersome and oh so self-important). This book helps your pare away the edifice of UML that adds major complexity to the modelign process and get down to the point of the exercise: modeling. Simple.
This book will give you a set of tools for analayzing domains efficiently: because you will permeate what it teaches you through all your domain analyses, which then make the process easier, quicker, and more effective and the net result will be better and stronger. Then you can layer as much UML on it as you like (UML is like butter, full of cholestorol that clogs the arteries). I guess you could call the tools it teaches you- Rapid Modeling.
This is a good book. Try it and find out. Definintely 5 stars.

With some additional add on modules which have been created again by the Authors of the book, you can merge with other modeling tools such as RT3D or PHT3D.I have contacted to Prof.wen-Hsing CHAING and learned that there will be a lot of add on modules...one of them is the surface water/groundwater interaction modules.I have also learned that GE will be used for the presentation of the surface waters and the meteorological datas.It means, PMWIN will be the best software in this industry.Many of the commercial modflow processors are still using Modflow 96. The MODFLOW 2000, PEST-ASP and the late version of the UCODE had been added in April 2001 to PMWIN.And it works without any problem since April 2001. I have contacted and got more additional information about the PMWIN and the book. I am gratefull to Prof.Kinzelbach and Prof.Wen-Hsiang CHAING who has written 3D GROUNDWATER MODELING WITH PMWIN and created,developed the PMWIN, GE and MODFLOW 2000 add on modules.I have found the best software and the best TEXTBOOK.This book is really excellent and can be advised both to the students,practical engineers and advanced groundwater modelers, as a compherensive guide to modeling and complete the exercises to refresh their knowledges.And also... Especially for the professors , this book will be an excellent primary text for a university course, or as asupplement to an existing curriculum.

Saved my you-know-whatI know from experience how frustrating it can be not to have the right resources available. Although there are some great user's groups and so on, Kofler's book saved me a ton of time because I found pretty much everything in his book. Using his book and the free, on-line PDF MySQL manual is all you'll need to do a complex business application for the web.

A very thorough professional book
Very clear! Best book I found on MySQLI'm a Windows user who needed to setup MySQL that was required by a free message board [;ocal website]). This book made the MySQL portion of the install extremely easy and covered all of the topics I needed to know to setup MySQL in a Windows environment. He covered all the "gotchas" with both Windows and UNIX/LINUX platforms - nice! It also covers setting up and interfacign with PHP, Apache and other system "components" - which really helped me to deploy my message board project.
I enjoyed his writing style so much, I found myself reading the book front to back, versus looking up specific topics - that doesn't happen very often with these types of technical books.
The information is up to date, even though it's over a year old. I checked out the top 3 MySQL books out there and this one was my favorite for getting started clear through advanced usage - there is not a lot of "fluff" - just a clear writing style hitting all the topics.

Invaluable UNIX Programming ResourceFrom a simple HTTP GET to detailed network file and connectivity operations, including TCP and UDP packets, ports, sockets and so on, there is a place in the book for each kind of network programming service. There is also a fair amount of text dealing with debugging techniques, allowing even those programmers who are experienced in their craft to find new ways to ferret out the problems in their code. The book also promotes good stylistics in programming, engendering the idea that readable and understandable code is better code than that which simply works.
There are also examples and explanations for IPv6?, for any programmer who is going to be making the leap into next generation networks. There are also instructions on how to deal with wireless networks, security models and other topics for anyone who plans on designing network applications or specialized network configurations.
It's probably not accurate to rate a book on a topic that holds little interest to the reader, but even a modest script programmer can tell when a book hits a subject just right and brings out all the details in a concise, easy-to-understand way. If you're a hard-core network programmer, this book is definitely for you. If not, you may find you learn something anyway.
Continuing the work of a legend in the field of CSFor those of us who have the first two editions of this book, the third edition has the following changes in effect:
·IPv6 updates. In the second version of the book, IPv6 was merely a draft and the sections covering IPv6 has been updated to take these changes into effect.
·POSIX updates. The functions/APIs and examples have been updated to reflect the changes to the latest version of the POSIX specification (1003.1-2001)
·SCTP coverage. 3 new chapters that cover this new reliable, message-based transport protocol have been added.
·Key Management Sockets coverage. Network security and its applicability and use with IPsec.
·Updated Operating Systems and machines that are used to run the examples in the book.
·Some topics such as Transaction TCP and X/Open Transport Interface have been dropped.
Many topics and sections have been updated with the authors' comments. These comments even though simple for someone new to the profession, are extremely useful as they are like hints and tips from one developer to the next to help you out in your next programming assignment.
If this is the only edition of the book that you are reading, you are in for a treat. Topics in Network Programming are covered in detail and using concrete programming examples that all of us can relate to - all Unix, but what else is there?! All kidding aside, the topics are covered well enough that they are useful information under any Operating System. The concepts don't change; sockets are sockets under any Operating System. The function call is different, but one needs to go thru the same steps under any environment.
Being the most popular networking protocol, TCP/IP is covered in Part I of the book. One needs to have prior understanding of the TCP/IP protocol and the OSI model, however. If this is the first time you are looking at the programming aspects of networking protocols, Part I of this book will cover the basics. It starts you off with a couple of simple examples such as daytime client and a daytime server and it builds on that as the reader reads along. TCP, UDP and SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) are covered in brief in Part I, and basic concepts such as the three-way handshake of TCP and the four-way handshake of SCTP are depicted.
Part II of the book covers sockets and socket programming. Topics such as the socket Address Structure in IPv4 and IPv6 for TCP, UDP and SCTP are covered and examples (the same daytime client/server) are given to convey the point to the reader. It is important to mention here that all the topics and concepts are depicted for the three transport protocols: TCP, UDP and SCTP. Every single socket API under the Unix programming environment is covered and examples are given for each function call to show the reader how the function can be utilized. An entire chapter has been dedicated to Socket Options and how they are used/can be used for best results. Hints are given throughout the chapter to tell the user about the pitfalls and best practices of each option.
After the basics have been covered, various I/O models are depicted in detail and examples are shown to convey the pro's and con's of each I/O model. The five I/O models used thru the book and available under the Unix environment are:
·Blocking I/O
·Non-blocking I/O
·I/O Multiplexing (using select and poll)
·Signal driven I/O
·Asynchronous I/O
SCTP - Stream Control Transmission Protocol, a new IEFT standard are covered in later chapters of 9 and 10 and again in chapter 23. The two interface models of SCTP (one-to-one and one-to-many) are covered in detail, and their differences with TCP are also explained in full. The client/server example that has been used throughout the book is ported to use the new SCTP protocol. The authors then go into great detail explaining the problems that SCTP solves over TCP and where and how it would be useful to use SCTP.
Advanced topics such as IPv4 and IPv6 portability, Unix Domain Protocols, Multicasting and advanced Socket programming for UDP, TCP and SCTP cover the rest of the chapters in this book.
Various options for interoperability between IPv4 and IPv6 start off the last section of the book. A chapter on Advanced I/O functions brings the reader a new perspective of how complicated Network Programming can become. Non-blocking I/O, befits and examples are covered in chapter 16. The topics on Multicasting, and adding reliability to UDP are probably my favorite chapters in this book. The Time Server that has been used throughout the book is re-coded to become a multicast application. Some issues that arise when designing multicast applications such as multicast on a WAN are also discussed.
The third edition of the UNP book is as good as ever. The updates truly reflect solutions to today's challenges in Network Programming. Bill Fenner and Andrew Rudoff did an amazing job continuing the work a true legend in the field of Computer Science.

Clear, yet detailed. A great product indeed.The CD plays great and flows at an excellent pace. Even the way they teach, gives you some great layout and operational techniques to make using MAX so much more efficient.
Plus what makes this training great is THE TUTOR. He is creatig the model at the same time as he is telling you what to do. Hence you always see his steps even if he skips mentioning it.
I have never been so pleased using one product as I have been using this CD.
As someone wrote earlier the CD is worth 3 times more than what we paid for it.

A student of Dr. HalpinHis books are informative and easy to read. Even with his instruction close at hand, having this book is a must for any modeler who wants to get anywhere. He covers ORM, UML, and ER modeling. My preference for ORM when modeling databases or XML schema's is strongly tied to this book. Its easy, its fast, and best of all it makes sense.
My first recommendation would be to come check Dr. Halpin out for yourself in Utah @ Northface University. But if you can't, buy his books and seriously follow along. This is the future, this is where the industry is headed, not just for DB's but all applications (just ask anyone at MS or IBM).
BrilliantI started knowing nothing about how to design a database, and came away as an expert.
Halpin should win an award for this book.
Best Book On Data I've ReadConceptual modeling means modeling your data in a way that makes sense to everyone, from the business experts (who know nothing about databases) to the coders and DBA's. And ORM provides a logical, intuitive way to do this.
Once you've got a conceptual model, it's pretty straightforward to get an ER model, from which you can develop the logical databased design. In fact, MS Visio (forget which version) does this for you.
The reason ER fails is that it cannot model data in a stable way. It still has a place, but ORM is so much more powerful, scalable, and stable.
And not only will you learn about ORM (he has great exercises to help practice), but you will learn a lot about data in general.
This is the best technical/developer/software engineering book I have ever read.

Tells you how to start and when to stopMy first books on use cases focused more on UML rather than use cases. I did not give a hoot on use cases, because they look so simple on paper (and that's why I didn't buy a book specifically on use cases!) But as I grew as a developer, I began to believe that use case modelling if done well can significantly reduce development effort and bring about quality solutions. Use cases are the foundation to the understanding of the system that you are trying to develop. Use cases deserve serious attention.
The main problem with use cases is that you either don't know how to start or when to stop. This book tells you both. It tells you how to develop your use case model systematically from scratch and how to make provisions so that your use case model can grow. IMO, that's the main draw for this book.
The authors also give good insights on the possible approaches the reader can take to expand his/her use case model iteratively. It cautions the modeller to keep a balanced model so that stakeholders can understand, rather than one that specifies everything but gets bogged down by the details.
Semantics, you can get it elsewhere, but this book discusses it pretty well too. The examples are clear and relevant.
All in all, Frank and Granville did an excellent job covering the topic.
An Outstanding Guide for Experienced Practioners
Excellent practical guide
I had been practising object modeling for some time before I read that book and was, at times, wondering :
-what could be the right objects in that situation ?
-where should I put this behavior ?
-do I need "services/processes" objects to operate on my "domain" objects ?
This book gave me really precious answers :
-use the patterns to identify objects
-Let the objects do the work
-Let the object that has the knowledge do the work that requires this knowledge.
I have been practising on new projects since and found the lessons invaluable.
That's why I am not surprised at all about other reviews and I have been recommending the book around me ever since.
The fundamental complexity of business systems is business, not transactions, persistence, gui or any other technical aspect. We have many years of experience with technical matters but we often strive to preserve/improve business value in the systems we build.
