Total necessity for the serious modeler
This book is really great and fully explained. It's for the serious modeler wanting to find specific ways to customize. Or the modeler wanting to take that new step further. Anyway it is worth way more than what it costs.

Data Analysis for Data Base Design
Published in Paperback by Chapman & Hall (January, 1990)
Author: D. R. Howe
Amazon base price: $44.95
Used price: $3.10
Average review score:

Best book ever on logical database design
"Part 2: Relational Modeling" (especially normalization) and "Part 3: Entity-Relationship Modeling" are the heart of the book. Howe's treatment of these two topics is the best I have ever seen in print. He is a marvelously clear writer. No other book I know (and I own several, and have inspected a dozen or more others) would get more than three stars from me on this subject.

The book is much more suitable for self-study than most. Each section of each chapter ends with questions and exercises, and suggested answers and solutions are at the end of the chapters.

The ideas will also be indirectly useful to practitioners of object-oriented analysis.

The first 3/4 of "Part 4: Implementation" shows how to do physical database design for a network-style (CODASYL) database management system. This has little practical value, as CODASYL-compliant DBMS products are no longer actively marketed. But even this material will be useful to OODBMS designers. Just substitute "collection" or "container" (an OOD concept) for "set" (a CODASYL concept), and you will be well on your way.

Pretty good, especially in the absence of competition
To put it short, the book is worthy. Not perfect--terminology is strange at times (the author calls event-driven programming "asynchronous" which is, first, a strange choice, and, second, confusing--especially in a book on communications, where the term "asynchronous" is an accepted term used to signify something very different; the author calls states "state machines" which, the two being distinct entities, is, again, confusing a bit.) The editor should have caught these few cases of failed diction. Some of the proposed designs are questionable at times (new'ing state objects all the time? Not a good idea...) BUT: these are lateral things. What matters most is that this book is unique in what it covers and it does a pretty adequate job showing (practically, in code) how this kind of programs are written. I know of no other book of the same kind, and therefore highly recommend it to any programmer dabbling into communications area.

Wide survey of data mining and data warehousing issues
This is a collection of papers that cover salient issues in data warehousing with an emphasis on business intelligence, data mining and knowledge management applications. While many of the papers in this book are more useful to technical professionals, there is a lot of material that will also be useful to marketing and competitive intelligence specialists in the business domain.

Some of the papers are more basic and introductory, such as "Justification of Data Warehousing Projects", "An Introduction to Information Technology and Business Intelligence" and "Some Issues in Design of Data Warehousing Systems". Some, however, address advanced topics such as "Data Mining Methods Databases and Statistics Point of Views" and "Incremental Data Allocation and Reallocation in Distributed Database Systems".

My personal favorite papers were "Specification of Components Based on the WebComposition Component Model" (reflecting professional interests in component-based development), "Complementing the Data Warehouse with Information Filtered from the Web", and "Using Business Rules Within a Design Process of Active Databases" (another area of professional interest).

In addition, the papers cover topics in data mining, data quality and knowledge management, which means that there is at least a few papers that will intersect with a reader's professional interests. The best audience for this book includes academics (the papers are citable), consultants who specialize in business intelligence and data mining, and organizations that have a solid base of experience with advanced uses of data warehousing.

A birdseye view on the overall perspective of the Database Management System. I find the SQL Playbook section a great help in applying immediately whatever I've learned about the SQL in the earlier chapters. An excellent guide book.

Best book I've seen on DB design!!
Why waste your time reading 600+ pages to learn how to create a database? You can read this book and it is less than 300 pages! It covers everything. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to know what makes a great relational database work regardless of the DBMS. This is for beginners wanting to learn for the first time to those with DB experience that want a refresher on the fundamentals!

CD Rom All Wrong
The book iitself is good and could learn a great deal with a correct companion cd. But you can't include a CD in which all the problems and examples in the book differ from the cd. As with all software-learning books with accompaning cd's, it's crucial that you can perfom the necessary problems and examples correctly. This is not the case with Data Analysis and Business Modeling with Microsoft Excel by Wayne L. Winston. Small errors such as the cd Excel sheets being one row off from the book examples to missing data and incorrectly named companies (example: Cisco on the cd vs. Microsoft in the book) to large errors such as beginning of the month totals in sales examples being non-existent and data completely missing (in the Cisco/Microsoft example.) And these all occur w/in the first three chapters! Had the cd jived with the book, this would be a great resource. Since it is nearly impossible to do the activities on the cd, I rated this book poorly and will be taking it back and looking at other data analysis/modeling books.

Great Book!! Very Useful
I love this book. This Book is a must for anyone who wants to learn how to use Excel to perform Data Analysis and Business modeling. I learned alot from this book. Winston shows us how to use Excel functions and shows us with examples. Plenty of examples and answers provided with the CD. This is a very good "foundational" book. You should also check out the book by Jackson and Staunton "Advanced modeling in finance using Excel and VBA". A book by Sengupta "Financial Modeling using Excel and VBA" is also worth looking at. I own all 3 books
