Markets and Mortality : Economics, Dangerous Work, and the Value of Human Life
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (23 February, 1996)
Author: Peter Dorman
Amazon base price: $65.00

People often take jobs they know are dangerous, and indeed, our economies generally depend on their doing so. But is that by itself a justification for letting them? After all, maybe the answer would be to change our economies instead. This book is a knotty but fascinating attempt to look at this knotty but fascinating issue. The author, a political scientist of a technical bent, rejects the received view that high-risk jobs can be justified by the payment of higher wages. And indeed, in the book's best section, he expands his argument into a general critique of the cost vs. benefits analysis of the value of human life. Dorman notes that historically the marketplace has not produced even remotely efficient accommodations between risk-creators and risk-bearers. The mainstream economic approach fails because "risk in its publicly meaningful sense is not the bare statistical probability of suffering a loss; it is a violation of the norms of care and reciprocity that ought to govern relations among people."

Too Gritty For Me
While this book may have some merits, I pulled it from the middle school library because the language, while it may be realistic, is too gratuitously rough for middle school students.

The High School Lifestyle
A Review by Dane

This book is about a friendship between two high school basketball players that came too face with one: The stress of grades and scholarships for colleges and two: The death of ones friend and not knowing why they did what they did. The two friends, T.J. and Tyron both play basketball and both get the privilege to play at Full Court Camp. Each of them experience life changing memories at this camp; what those memories are, is something you'll have to find out for yourself.

I was unsure when the climax of the story was to take place but after figuring it out I realized how unexpected it hit me, without any warnings. (I'm sure that's how the author intended it; the only hints were when T.J. saw the caution tape surrounding the bridge.) He only had an idea. I didn't like the ending of the story; it didn't end with a spark like most stories do. It turned out to be an unhappy ending when T.J. looks down over the bridge were him and LuAnn spoke saw where she may have fallen. What I did enjoy about this story was that T.J. was determined to know why the death of his friend was so and better understand who pushed her into making the final decision to leap to her death.

I would recommend this book to people that enjoy the game of basketball and enjoy the lifestyle of a high school student. All and all it had smooth fluency and was and easy read.

good book, very emotional
Blue Star Rapture is a pretty good book. It tells the lives of a couple of high school boys, T.J. and Tyron, who are good at basketball. The main character T.J. is kind of like Tyron's shepherd because Tyron is a supreme basketball player but is very slow academically. They go to this huge basketball camp where T.J. meets this girl from across the bridge at a church camp. It is a very good story, very exciting, although it does get confusing in a few spots. I recommend this book to all athletes because it describes the drive and determination it takes to compete with the best of the best in sports, as well as in life.

Mixed
Good summary of the new BIS rules, but the review of understanding marking-to-model is sketchy, inconsistent, and rife with too many pseudo-graphs and footnotes to his own books and articles.

Major disappointment
I'm not sure I found one worthwhile idea in this book.

Excellent Book and Very Timely
I found this book to be an excellent overview of both value investing and what's going on in the market today. Value is the only strategy that has been working in recent years. More importantly, it has stood the test of time. That's probably why Buffett practices it. This book presents candid strategies from lots of long-time legends, including Martin Whitman, Bill Miller, Charles Royce, and David Dreman. But it also includes interviews with several younger value investors. It's full of valuable insights that every serious investor looking to make money in this market should read. I highly recommend it. You might also check out Kazanjian's other interview-based book "Wizards of Wall Street," which is also an insightful read.

Must reading for investors of all types
While I'm an advocate of the value investing approach, this book is essential reading for all investors (even believers in growth). The author has put together a very eclectic group of outstanding investors. He presents them with excellent questions, and gets them to reveal in detail how they choose stocks. While I took several investment courses in college, I found the advice in this book to be more valuable than anything I learned in school. It's the kind of book you'll want to read, underline, and re-read many times throughout your investment life.

How many kilowatt hours are included with this overpriced book? How ironic? Informative, but that's about it.

Excellent book for anyone in the energy industry!

Outdated and little valuation theory
This book only contains the present value calculations for the various items on a balance sheet. It is an introductory book on what happens to the present value if the market rate changes by 200 basis points. Unfortunately the book does not touch on bank valuation, but is a primer on market valuation used in interest rate risk analysis.
