Almost useless and certainly confusing!
I was hoping for better when I obtained the book. I can't believe this guy (the author) went to U.C. Some of the ideas that he presents are interesting and worthwhile to pursue, but he does a poor job of presenting them. The author took bits from each class that he attended at U.C. and forced them into an incoherent story. Many of the equations that he introduces are plain wrong, e.g., (2.7), (2.8), etc. Those that are correct (2.11) are presented in a most obtuse way so that one is left wondering: "what is Simons' talking about". For those who are not technically inclined this is a travesty. How are they supposed to differentiate the baloney from the fact. I understand that this is a "traders' book", but there are many better ones out there! Come on Howard, come on Wiley, you can do better than this.

Outstanding Book
Howard Simons' book is a tremendous resource for beginners and market professionals alike. I don't know who this jerk is who panned the book, but he obviously has no idea what he is talking about and ,furthermore, is completely incorrect in his criticisms. All of the equations in this book are correct.

Excellent. Lots of great insight
Simons book goes beyond the obvious "how do" on options -- which is exactly where more writers leave off. He is able to take very obtuse institutional topics like behavioral analysis and apply them to intermarket analysis. This is an excellent book for the more sophisticated trader who wants to learn more about options trading in all markets, including futures. Great read and well worth the price.

Thoughts about the book
"And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth." --Luke 12:15

Highly Recommended, Easy to Use!
This is a must for collectors! Each page presents 10 figurines (ornaments, tender tails, etc)in color with a full description of Issue Dates, retired dates, original retail price, figurine number, and how much it is worth according to the symbol. Also on the bottom of each page is a slot to pencil in how much your PM is worth and the price you paid for it. At the end of the book, there is a portion dedicated to calculate the total worth of your collection. The first portion of the book has a history of PM and a listing of the most valuable figurines. It also states how to take care of them, etc. The best feature is the indexes. You can search by the title or the stock number (which is on the bottom of the figurine). This book can be helpful if you purchase PM over an on-line auction. You can find out how much the figurine is worth before placing a bid. It has saved me money!

Must Have for Precisiouse Precious Moments
Beautiful book with a lot of helpful information. Authors obviously spent long time researching Precious Moments. Many pictures and good descriptions will help novice and advance collectors.

A hard boiled well plotted mystery with unlikable characters
This is the first Thomas Black mystery I read. The book is well plotted and reads fast. The action scenes are hardboiled. I almost gave this four stars but I didn't really like any of the characters. Would it have killed the author to put in at least one normal character and some normal human emotions. Perhaps Seattle has an unusually high percentage of mentally ill and/or deranged people but I doubt it. On page 1 Black's dog is killed. Black doesn't shed a tear but rather he gives us a gardening tip--plant roses over a dog's grave--what's with that?

superior to most
Emerson's Thomas Black Mysteries are all great BUT, up until Thomas Black finally marries Kathy, he is overly obsessed with women (including Kathy). You know what I mean. Every time a woman (kathy included) appears (not just in her initial introduction but EVERY time she steps on the page) Emerson drools over how perfectly gorgeous, sexy etc. etc. her eyes are and her hair is and her legs are. Over and over. Hey I don't need to be told over and over the color of someones eyes, hair, skin. I mean what is this? Emerson trying to fill-up the pages or is he just a shallow sexist jerk. And naturally most all the women in his books are stunning beauties all hot to trot or they are sick pathetic gutter dogs. The men are usually ugly, potbellied freaks.

Out side of that, Emerson's Thomas Black Mysteries are superior to most of what's out there. Full of fun and wit. Interesting plots that have depth and breadth. Highly recommended.

Now, his Mac Fontana Mysteries are not very good. In fact it's hard to believe Emerson wrote them.

Thomas Black Mysteries: in order, first to last The Rainy City, Poverty Bay, Nervous Laughter, Fat Tuesday, Deviant Behavior Yellow Dog Party, The Portland Laugher, The Vanishing Smile, The Million-Dollar Tattoo, Catfish Café.

Mac Fontana Mysteries: in order, first to last Black Hearts and Slow Dancing, Help Wanted: Orphans Preferred, Morons and Madmen, Going Crazy in Public, The Dead Horse Paint Company

A Very Good Debut Novel
"The Rainy City" is the debut novel from Earl Emerson and his character, private eye, Thomas Black. The atmosphere is very realistic; the series is set in Seattle. Black and his friend (in this book), Kathy Birchfield are entertaining and totally believable. The plot is good, and for anyone contemplating reading the entire series, this is the one to begin the journey. The character development throughout the entire series (the last being "Catfish Cafe") is excellent and a lot of fun to watch.

An unecessary defense of the stock market
The stock market barometer is a completely unecessary defense of what the stock market is. It provides an incredible amount of uninteresting and completely trivious information. It is definitely NOT a must read.

Classic elaboration of the Dow Theory
William Hamilton was the successor (both at the Wall Street Journal and in expounding the Dow Theory) to Charles Dow, and the one who clarified the Dow Theory as most people understand it today. To students of the Dow Theory, and of Wall Street and Investment history in general, this is a must-have volume. Also see works by Robert Rhea.

Financial books of the past, still tell you the same truths.
This is a great book. There is just one update in the introduction. The rest of the book still maintains its 100 year old roots.

As a financial author I am always inclined to look to the past for answers. This book orignially written by Mr.Dow, of Dow Jones Industrial Average fame, still is very relevant today.

Market Volatility

Too much academic
It is not a matter of like or dislike here.
I did really enjoyed of the same author - "Irrational exuberance", finding its conclusions very well argumented and the exposition clear and easy.
Here we have only a kind of "laboratory" with a collection of articles about hypotesys testing: very specific, many formulas, use of advanced math but NO DEFINITIVE CONCLUSION.Not even the thesys about market efficiency has been clearly attacked.
If the thesys lacks, you cannot either form a judgement and agree or refuse conclusions.

I love reading and discussing: if you happen to have ideas different from mine - or whatever - feel free to write me.

Nice one but.......
It is a nice book. But for me,I love Shleifer's "Inefficient market" more. This book focus on the Divident-to-price ratio and use it for the analysis of the market volatility. The writer does give us some insight about the market. But I doubt if it could stand for a long... since the market is changing all the time.

An Academic with a brain!
Shiller does to the Effecient Market Theory what Columbus did to the flat earth theory. This is one of the finest books on markets I have read, and I have read hundreds.

Good Sequel
This book is the sequel to "Bright Captivity", which began the saga of Anne Couper Fraser, her marriage to John Fraser of England, and her years spent in London. This books opens with the return of the Frasers to St. Simons Island. If you are have read other Eugenia Price books, you will be re-acquainted with the McKays of Savannah, the Goulds of St. Simons and others. The Coupers were one of the noble families of the Georgia Coast in the mid-1800's. Anne's life is one of great love and great sorrow. I came to love her as a sister throughout the trilogy. Sometimes I wanted to shake her -- mostly I wanted to sit and have a long talk. You will also enjoy her relationship with her "Eve", whose devotion to Anne is complete. I highly recommend this book, and the entire Georgia Trilogy, to fans of Eugenia Price and anyone else who enjoys fiction based on real-life people from our past. I hated for the third book to end.

Dealing with death
Without realizing the focus of the book, I found the beginning a bit depressing. Eugenia Price, though, showed the mercy of God toward those who mourn. Anne Couper Fraser is prepared through the grief of others to face her own personal tragedy. She grows in selflessness as the book progresses, gaining strength from God and learning to comfort others. Excellant read on the whole with information divulged through dialog, not lengthy thought sessions.

I loved it!
I found the love between Anne and John to be a thing of beauty and maybe something we don't know much about now-a-days. Devoted love that puts the other person first is not emphasized much in our new modern age! I would like to have seen John's struggle with slavery and/or the military come to some resolution but the scene of his death left me in tears. It reminded me to appreciate my own family members while they are here. I would have no problem at all recommending this book to anyone looking for a nice long novel to cuddle into a comfy chair with. Thanks Eugenia Price!

Analyzing and Forecasting Futures Prices: A Guide for Hedgers, Speculators, and Traders (Wiley Finance Editions)

Just another system
The author does a fine job of presenting his system, however, he forgets to explain how he goes about his analysis. A comprehensive book would inform the reader how the author conducts analysis. Besides, one would expect for the price of the publication, a print date of Jan 2001 may offer an updated version of the original print: no luck. Much of the print dedicated to computer application uses old Lotus language - it is clear this edition could care less about users in Jan 2001 - it also seems to pass over the 90s as well. In all, it seems the author presents his notes on a system of looking for cycles, but the path is not clear and the guide not up to date. I am a commodity hedger and I find little use with book.

Forceasting Futures prices
The Book has detailed explanations and examples of futures trading techniques and a lot technical analysis. One of the few forecasting books that is not lost in mathematics . The spread sheet examples purred like a kitten in excel. This in turn can be used to judge the significance of cycles or trends. The spread sheet are a great help to sort and mange data to see what you are really looking at. Easy to follow real world examples. It's the kind of book you wish for in MBA classes but never seem to see

Given all the choices out there -- choose another book
I bought this book in hopes of understanding better how to buy my first home. It did in fact help with a number of questions I had (though many remain). But what really hurts this book is the author's confusion with math. Several of the formulae in the book are just wrong (like how to calculate your debt-to-income ratio). His comparisons of various loan options are also useless. I'll give two examples: (1) he compares ARMs to fixed-rate mortgages during a historical period during which interest rates dropped like a rock, so it was already clear which would look better; (2) in another example he prefers a 30-year, low point but high rate loan to a 20-year, high point but low rate loan based solely on the monthly payments -- no mention of the relative paydown of the loan's principal. There was a lot of useful info in this book, but since there are so many options in this genre, I would suggest you look elsewhere. I am returning this book tomorrow.

Great Help!
When I purchased this book I had very little knowledge about real estate or lending. After reading the book, successfully buying my first home and now preparing to buy my first rental property, I must say that Mr. Eilers book is truly amazing. I have followed his methods, formulas and tips and tricks to the tee and they ALL work! My realtor even borrowed the book until she could puchase one of her own. I have now purchased and read four real estate books and none were nearly as helpful, complete or as easy to understand as this book. Not only does the book help with real estate, it is also very helpful in the area of finance. Thanks for helping me buy my first and second homes.

Cycles
Trades off cycle analysis and various indicators (detrended, money flow, open interest) and divergences. I can't say I will be using any of the methods in this book , but it is written well and explained well .. and for that it gets another star.

A responsive oscillator; need a computer to do it right.
Has developed an oscillator which factors in volume to the oscillator equations. It is very good at picking short term tops and bottoms. He has also defined a stop point that gets taken out only when price has reversed prematurely. I have made money with this but I believe you must study it for awhile to be successful.
