terrific read
I am an author of three books on Modern Portfolio Theory and as the director of research for an investment advisory firm I read many books on investing every year---this is one of the best books I have read in recent years, doing a great job of explaining why the markets are efficient. Ron is an excellent teacher, using simple analogies to make often difficult concepts easy to understand.
Anyone interested in learning how the market really works, and not how Wall Street wants and needs you to believe it works, (and that should be everyone)should read this book

The Unbeatable Market
Are you frustrated by your investment mistakes? Do you have very little confidence that you will know how to avoid the same mistakes in the future? Join the club!! Here is a book that explains why you feel so helpless, and offers, in my opinion, the only sensible way to invest. Understand this: the best you can hope for is to achieve market returns while managing risk. You will not beat the market, and all the hype of the talking heads and investment magazines is noise, not information. This is a wonderfully informative book that has helped me understand why I have made poor investment choices in the past, and given me a plan of action for the future. If you think you know how to invest and beat the market, lotsa luck. If you want to invest sensibly, read this remarkable book.

Note: this is not a book that appeals to your greed with a get rich quick philosophy. Quite the contrary. Dr. Ross takes you on a guided tour of how and why the markets work, why all the hype of Wall Street can be so misleading to investors, and how you can invest efficiently. And efficiency, as Dr. Ross explains, means avoiding waste - wasted money, wasted time, wasted aggrivation. Work smarter, not harder, as I like to say.

Highly useful!
Correctly understanding the securities markets and how the financial industry ticks is critical to one's financial health. No other book I know does a better job in wading through the patently false, unscientific nonsense that banks, brokerages, the financial media and nine out of ten book authors typically disseminate. Why to they do that? Simple. It maximises their commissions or circulations at the expense of investors' net returns. Why is it simple? Because a large number of investors believe the rubbish that Wall Street and the media yells at them since it sounds somehow plausible and sophisticated. Other "eductated" investors allow their greed and "overconfidence" to get the better of them and hence fall for the same hogwash. This book explains it all and it is surprisingly entertaining. Strong buy!!

This guide covers most of the major brands of collectibles, from Anheuser-Busch steins to Swarovski crystal and Willitts Designs Just the Right Shoe. It lists the original prices, retirement date, edition size, and replacement values for 68,000 items. Very useful. Good value.

Very Helpful

Works better than low carbs
By concentrating on the low GI foods the authors recommend, I've been able to keep my blood sugar stable between 80 and 120 all day and night. I'm full without feeling stuffed or sick, and I get to eat a wide range of low cost, perfectly normal foods. No more expensive snack bars or costly meat, meat, meat!

I tried low carbs and those plans didn't work for me. With low carbs, my blood sugar would tank before meals triggering horrible migrain symptoms. I don't get that any more and can just eat normally, without forcing myself to eat for fear of getting hungry and triggering a headache or the dreaded blue flashes. I really do feel so much better and my blood sugar testing clearly shows that my sugar is well controlled even after a high carb meal, provided I eat the carbs recommended in The Glucose Revolution.

I think you'll be suprised at how easy and satisfying these foods are. Normal foods. Normal eating schedule. Normal blood sugar levels. Gotta love it. This booklet is well, well worth the money. Don't hesitate to buy it.

The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing: Cycles and Patterns in the Indexes
Published in Paperback by Seek It Pubns (01 November, 1997)
Author: Raymond Merriman
Amazon base price: $95.00

Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Stock Market Cycles
Many traders and investors do not pay attention to cycles in stock prices. After reading this book, they will change their tune. Cycles should play a major role in your stock market arsenal and this book clearly lays out the case in excrutiating detail.

This book is Volume I of a 5-part series on " The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing" by Raymond Merriman:

Volume I. Cycles and Patterns in Indexes
Volume II. Geocosmic Correlations to Investment Cycles
Volume III. Geocosmic Correlations to Trading Cycles
Volume IV. Geocosmic Correlations to Short-Term Trading (not yet completed)
Volume V. Technical Tools and Trading Cycles (not yet completed)

This 227-page 16 chapter book provides solid evidence that cycles exist in stock prices. The book documents the cycles and patterns with 5 graphs and charts, 18 figures and diagrams, and 25 tables.

Merriman begins by explaining cycle characteristics -- definition of a cycle, troughs and crests, time band, and distortions. Then he covers the three basic categories of cycles (primary, long-term, and short-term) followed by their subcycles known as phases. Next, Merriman covers trends and teh criteria for identifying bull and bear markets.

Long-term cycles (80-year, 54-year Kondratieff) and their subcycles are then reviewed with examples. One chapter is devoted solely to the 18-year cycle in stock prices because that time interval occurs frequently. Multiples of the this cycle -- 36-year, 54-year, 72-year and 90-year -- are covered as they also appear over time in the past 200 years or so. Merriman provides a table of 18-year cycles from 1797 to 1990 showing the cycle highs and lows, accompanied by 12 charts illustrating the cycle high and low points.

Merriman then delves into the subcycles of the 18-year cycle with a detailed discussion of the eleven cycle periods from 1797 to 1990. He then moves into the well-known 4-year cycle pinpointing all of these cycles since 1896 with the month and year of the cycle troughs. This is further supported with a table indicating every 4-year cycle trough, crest, and trough; months up and down; low, high, and low of cycle; % up and % down. All the cycles in the table were grouped in terms of the larger 18-year cycle. The structure of the cycle is reviewed using 27 graphs of each 4-year cycle pinpointing the high and low poits. Additional information is provided on the two- and three- phase 4-year cycles and subcycles, and a table showing the 4-year cycle from 1895 and the proximity to the U.S. Presidential Election. Details on the 22.5 months cycle are also included.

There is a 33-page chapter on all the cycles evident in the Japan Nikkei Stock Index. Technical analysis is the title of a chapter that deals with investing vs. trading, and market timing vs. buy-and-hold. Included is a table showing the 4-year cycle crests in U.S. stock prices and the length ot time needed to get back to the crest.

In summary, Merriman provides a truly enlightening and useful guide to identifying and using cycles to time the market with increased precision. Students of the market will find that this book offers another important tool to conquering the market. Cycle review should be part of every trader's and investor's methodology, otherwise optimal results may not be obtained.

A Non-Stop, Don't-Drop Book!!! It was, SPELLBINDING!
I grabbed this book online on a lark... and am I ever glad I did! I couldn't put it down! From the opening bell of the trading pit in the first paragraph, the author takes off at the speed of the markets, sidetracking only to share the lessons hard-learned along the way. For the first time ever I read about an "Everyday Joe" who buckled up for daily war and successfully fought to win in the greatest financial wars our society knows. He also lets us in on his REAL personal life, his fears, and the dichotomies and dilemnas of being a devout Christian operating ethically and morally in a world that most Christians neither understand nor condone. This is a work that stands for ANYONE trying to succeed in an arena that at first appears counter to their chosen values, regardless of religion or career. If you're reading these reviews to help you decide, STOP HERE! CLICK THE BUY BUTTON! It's the best trade you'll make today!

A quick and enjoyable read with many excellent insights.
"Lessons from the Pit" is a page-turner! It is an honest and easy-to-read account of life in the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. What makes it so fascinating is the way Joe and Terry bring characters and scenes to life and use them to show how God worked in Joe's life. No matter what their career, all readers will come away with valuable insights and helpful suggestions. My only wish is that the book had been longer. I didn't want to put it down.

Dynamic Parallels
Joe Leininger provides great insight in his daily efforts to be both a good and Christian person with his success as a commodities trader.

Few businessess are as brutally competitive as trading in Chicago exchanges. However, with great faith and works, Joe obviously holds to his strong Christian values in this tough environment.

This book helps me come to grips with striving for success while hoping to maintain the fundamental value of helping and loving one's fellow man (or woman).

A Good Book
This is a good book on a healthy way of life that is pretty far from the average (North) American diet. It has lists of the common foods and their Glycemic Index, plus recipes. It isn't strict to the point of ridiculousness as some diet books are. The authors provide a good, sound philosophy on the advantages of the Low Glycemic Diet. My only complaint is that there was too much testimonial on the benefits of the diet and examples of people's weight loss stories and not enough solid information on the glycemic index of various foods. All in all, though, a good book.

G-Index Diet
The G-Index diet makes weight loss easy. The program is user friendly, simple and very easy to follow. I have been recommending this book to my weight loss clients for many years because of its effectiveness, simplicity and informative style.
The best part is that all of the foods include a wide variety in all food groups and are commonly available in the local grocery store. Most of my clients really like the fact that it also allows for some carbohydrates.

Great book
For the first time in my life I have lost weight and managed to keep it off using this book. 15 pounds and counting. The best part is that I don't feel hungry or cranky. I have recommended this book to friends and relatives.

CADs Index of Majors and Sports
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Riverside Pub (01 September, 1999)
Authors: David Macaulay and Riverside Publishing
Amazon base price: $10.36
List price: $12.95 (that's 20% off!)
David Macaulay's hit PBS series by the same name cannot take you as far as this book does into the wonders of the constructed world: dams, domes, skyscrapers, tunnels, and bridges. It's also a trip through time, transporting you, for instance, from Rome's Ponte Fabricio (built in 62 B.C.) to the 1930s Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to France's Ponte de Normandie across the Seine, which was the longest bridge on earth when completed in 1994. Some of the wires that so ingeniously hold up the Golden Gate are depicted in their intricate engineering context--and at their actual size. As you pore over Macaulay's crystal-clear text and profuse illustrations, the mental fog lifts and you get a sense of what a marvelous act of imagination the bridge is.

In books about building, the whole art lies in the details. Macaulay gives you a glimpse into the minds of the designers, too: in making a tunnel under the Thames River in London, Marc Brunel was inspired by shipworms, "the scourge of the Royal Navy," mollusks who used shieldlike shells to bore holes through timber "and then had the audacity to create a rigid lining in the wood with material they excreted." Though the poor workers who created Brunel's tunnel shields had to brave fiery explosions of methane gas and vile fumes from centuries of sewage--and as Macaulay rather rudely puts it, "Brunel's shield now seems a bit like a platoon of creaking Star Wars robots leaning against each other for support as they inch their way nervously through the muck"--the construction did the trick. That tunnel begun in 1825 is still part of the London Underground subway system.

Macaulay can construct a sound sentence: a child can grasp his celebration of the art of engineering, and a grownup can read him with childlike glee. --Tim Appelo

A Great Gift for Someone Who Loves Architecture
I gave this book as a gift to someone who loves and understands architecture. He found it most interesting. It contains many facts that are not generally know about large, historical structures.

A BIG success
David Macaulay takes the reader on a tour of some of the really big civil engineering structures of our time. Building Big has sections on Bridges, Tunnels, Dams, Domes, and Skyscrapers. Each part of the book describes the design and construction of from four to ten outstanding examples of the structure highlighted. The examples in each category are described in chronological order with some going back to the time of ancient Rome. The drawings that accompany the text are excellent at focusing on the details and techniques described. The integration of text and graphics is wonderful. In each case, Macaulay describes the design objectives, the interplay between the structure and the environment, and the engineering solutions used to bring the structures into being. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in structural engineering and design. I have not seen the related PBS video series, but I can say that the book stands on its own very well. Highly recommended.

Awesome
Macaulay fans are going to be amazed and impressed by this, his best book yet. It's a companion to the PBS series that's better than the films! A must see and better yet, must buy.

A Great and Essential Book
Like the first edition, the new SECOND EDITION simply, clearly and completely explains all the technical market indicators that are used in examining stock trends. At more than 800 pages, this book is double the size of the first edition and COMPLETELY updated. I bought three copies of the Second Edition as soon as it came out, and I gave two copies to my friends. This book tells what the indicators measure, what their components are, how they are formulated, and what exactly they purport to indicate. It describes their various realms of usefullness and their limitations. The book is packed with charts and examples and is very, very interesting to read. I bought the first edition about six years ago and have found it the only useful reference of its type. The Second Edition is entirely updated and expanded and is ESSENTIAL for understanding Technical Market Indicators and stock trends. I recommend that EVERYONE in the industry and all serious independant traders and researchers get the new SECOND EDITION of this book.

The Encyclopedia of Technical Market Indicators
The best technical analysis and indicator encyclopedia. Comprehensive, best refernce. The only book yoy will ever need. Not a dictionary of indicator, complete analysis and trading models explained.

The Encyclopedia of Technical Market Indicators, Second Edit
A must for the serious investor. A concise and easy to understand examination of technical market indicators. Mr. Colby's book is invaluable when determining the usefulness of indicators. This book is about as close as you can get to a "one stop shop" for technical research.
