Too good to put down!
I picked this up a few months ago and started it, then misplaced it. But in 2 days, I finished it! A quick and easy read. I felt that I could relate to "Shirley" in so many ways and on many levels. The author has created a character that is so believable, is a great example and is NOT perfect! I liked that a lot. I can't wait to read her other books in the Shirley line. I laughed and cried, was moved and learned all at the same time! Thank you Toni!

Christmas Will Never Be The Same
I read this story and I know I will never think of the holiday season in the same way. When I get rushed and stressed, I will stop and remember what it's all about. Thank you! For A wonderful story and a true to life experience. I have my shopping for the holidays taken care of already. Only I want my friends to read your book BEFORE Christmas. It's the kind of book that I want to read again and again, to remind me what all of the fuss is reall about.

The adrenal rush of gut-wrenching flights
Bob Norris' book, Check Six!, made it seem like I was right there in the midst of the action. His descriptions of both the stress and the excitement of flying the Hornet were very real. I felt the letdown from the adrenal rush of both Amy and Randi's gut-wrenching flights. Plus there was great despair over the tragedies of both Amy and Santana. I was glued to this book from beginning to end, and certainly enjoyed the ride. At the end I couldn't help but think that I really want to read more from this author. Whew!

Excellent view of Naval Aviation and 'flying off the deck'.
Campbell, Brown, Clancey...now Bob Norris. For those of you interested in aviation, flying, the integration of women in military aviation, and just a darn good read, this book is for you. The characters were well developed, the story line excellent, and I had trouble putting it down! Anyone who has read books by the previous authors should add Bob's name to their list. I hope that he continues writing from his experiences. I wouldn't even mind a non-fiction work that shows what really happened to those who were implicated, yet innocent in the Tailhook scandal. There were hints of a story even there. Good luck Bob, I'll be looking for more titles!

Realistic, interesting, informative...
This was probably the best fictional account of Naval Aviation I have read. The plot was excellent, the characters were likeable, the book was terrific!
Enjoy!

A Quintessential Cozy
Alex Winston is a nice, accommodating kind of guy who owns and operates Hatteras West, an inn centered around a colorful lighthouse located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, far from its Atlantic Coast namesake. What with demanding guests, financial difficulties, woman problems and a gathering of the Trask clan to read their father's last will and testament, Alex has his hands full.

His load becomes even heavier when his uncle, the Trask family lawyer who has been like a father to Alex, is found murdered in his law office. Who could have possibly wanted to bash in the head of the genial old eccentric? Tim's brother Tony, who was about to be written out of the uncle's will? Julie, a surprise Trask heir from the wrong side of the blanket? Perhaps the lawyer's secretary Nadine, the only one who can decipher the old man's handwriting. Or Vernum, the shy and shaggy gardener who hides from Tim's guests.

Tim Myers' Lighthouse mysteries are the coziest of the cozy, and Murder Checks Inn, the third in the series, is no exception. By now, the lighthouse setting has become familiar to readers, and no longer offers the surprises of book one, Innkeeping with Murder. Instead, Myers maintains interest by peppering the pages with suspicious characters, each with a more compelling motive than the last.

Cozy mystery readers are a forgiving breed. If the characters become a trifle homogenized and the solution a wee bit formulaeic, we don't care. Alex Winston is just such a gol-darned nice guy, and we really care about what happens to him and his charming inn. By the end of the story, Alex' life is heading in a satisfying direction and we look forward to what future books in the series have in store.

Who killed Alex's uncle and why
Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse is always a surprise to visitors. You usually don't see a lighthouse in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Alex Winston, Innkeeper, loves this place. His father had it built because his mother loved Cape Hatteras.

The Trask family checks in. Cynthia, her daughter Ashley and her son Steven are only here because it is the only way to hear Mr. Trask's will. But, Mr. Trask's lawyer, and Alex's uncle, Jase Winston is murdered and the will stolen before it could be read.

Alex calls his brother Tony. Tony comes to stay at the Inn for the memorial service. Alex and Tony don't get along too well.

In the midst of everything, Elise Danton's fiance moves to turn. Elise is the housekeeper at the Inn. Alex is very interested in Elise, but doesn't want to interfere since she's engaged.

As Alex starts looking into his uncle's murder, he begins to question everyone. Could one of the Trask family killed Jase. Who else had a motive to kill Jase? Alex discovers a lot of information and has to sift through everything to find the killer. In the meantime, many things start happening and Alex knows he's getting close.

This is a very enjoyable series. I love lighthouses and like the idea of a lighthouse inn near the mountains. The scenery is very inviting. I would love to stay at this Inn.

Alex is a wonderful character. Very likeable. He enjoys his work, but the downfalls are shown as well as the good times. Elise is somewhat of a mystery. She's described well enough, but to add to the story, Alex doesn't fully understand her. I think there is a lot there to be discovered in future books.

I love all the characters in the local town. They are very realistic.

I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

strong amateur sleuth
It's not many people who live and work at a place that means everything to them but Alex Winston is one of the chosen few. He works and lives in a lighthouse motel, the Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse located in the small town of Elkton Falls, North Carolina. The guests he serves always entertain him and he currently looks forward to the Trask family reunion. However, when they check in, he realizes they are not on vacation but are there for the reading of a will.

Alex's Uncle Jase is to read the will to the grieving family, the wife Cynthia, the daughter Ashley and the brother Steven but he is murdered before he can. The only item missing from his office is the will and that makes the Trask family members prime subjects. A previous unknown but acknowledged daughter also is one of the beneficiaries of the will and she too is considered a suspect. There is one more questionable person that must be considered. Alex's brother Tony desperately needed the money that Jase left him in his will. Alex is determined to find out who is uncle's killer is even it means risking his own life.

MURDER CHECKS INN is so colorful that readers would like to take a vacation at the lighthouse motel depicted in the novel. The scenery is picturesque while the story line is fast light and entertaining. The support cast adds an extra touch of color to the tale. The protagonist is very likable and he knows all the suspects have viable motives, which makes him even more determined to find the real killer.

A great teen book!
This is definitely one of those books you CANNOT put down! I read the whole thing in 1 day. It is so easy to relate to everyone in this book! If you are a teenager I'd definitely recommend it... especially if you're a hopeless romantic like me! After I finished this book I immediately started reading the next in the series (Heart & Soul) and I'm already half-way through that book too! This series is definitely a great one to get hooked on!

"Reality Check" leaves you wanting more
Laura Peyton Roberts' "Clearwater Crossing" is a deceptively engaging series. Although on first glance the books might look like any other teenage drivel (i.e. the "Love Stories" or anything with the words "Sweet Valley" on the cover), they are far from it. They are very well-written, with interesting characters, and each book has a "cliffhanger" ending designed to leave you wanting more.

"Reality Check" is the second book in the CC series. Like all the others, it encompasses several different plots. Although all the plots are believable and most are interesting, not all of the characters are likeable and some, like egocentric football player Jesse Jones, are downright loathsome. (On a note not directly related to this book, one has to wonder why Melanie Andrews - easily the best, most multi-dimensional character in the series - has such an emotional investment in him for so long).

Although all the books have the aforementioned cliffhanger endings, this one in particular has an ending that should leave the reader desperate to find out what happens next.

Can't put it down
I just LOVE these books, these are the type of books that you just can't put down! I started reading them at the end of December and now I am on book #4! Book #2 Reality Check was probably the most 'can't put it down' book so far, this book you just have to read, read, read until the end, and especially the ending of book #2 I ran out to the store to buy #3 immediatly. I can honestly say that this book is worth every penny you pay for it!

I was bored
I usually like books like this, but this novel just couldn't keep my interest. I didn't feel connected with the characters like I do with some other similar authors. I guess I will keep reading the book someday... but at this point I have no desire to finish the story.

So much fun
I loved this book. For anyone who likes books like this and hockey, this is a must read. I couldn't put the book down, not only was I excited about Janna and Ty, but I was just as excited about the New York Blades games and run to the Stanley Cup. For anyone who loves hockey, this is a great read.

Supposed to be a beach book..but I couldn't wait to read it!
I originally bought "Body Check" by Deirdre Martin to take to the beach with me and read, however, I don't leave for another week, and already, I've read it twice.

This book is AWESOME. I am a huge hockey fan (Go Pittsburgh Penguins!), and having met some hockey players before, I can honestly say that Ms. Martin really portrayed the hockey players well. I love the character of Janna...a strong and independent woman, just as I see myself as. This book was relatively short, and very much worth the time it took to read it. I am left hungering for the sequel, "Fair Play"...it is unbelieveable that this is Ms. Martin's first book. I will be anxiously awaiting future novels from her!

Reality Check

Close but still no cigar!
I was admittedly trepidatious about reading Ms. Carroll's new book after the mess that was Miss-Match but I'm pleased to report that her sophmore effort is much more accomplished and readable. She has fulfilled the promise of her earlier book with a much more realistic love story and an interesting look at the behind the scenes at a New York advertising agency.

That said there are several flaws in this new work that mar it and keep it from being a totally pleasing read. The weakest link is the premise of the story. Considering the dating shows that are already on the air, Blind Date and Elimidate to name a few and To Live and Date in New York on the Metro Channel where you can actually see the bad dates, Bad Date simply does not work. Television is a visual medium, listening to people relate their bad dates week after week is not interesting. At least on Jerry Springer, the bad date would get to present another point of view. Also, the fact that the show is on an obscure cable channel when it cries out to be on UPN or the WB where the impact on the show would be immediate and letting the studio audience vote? How realistic is that when American Idol allows the country to vote week after week. Second the idea that a well-known movie actor who has a career would agree to host a game show is also unbelievable. Talk about career suicide! If this were 1989 would Paula Abdul really be judging American Idol or Naomi Judd Star Search? Even the obstacle of no fraternization between the contestants went out the window at the earliest convenience. How realistic is it that none of the contestants were never recognized in public? Also, an employee smoking a joint in the office would be fired immediately, even in advertising. No firm is that lenient and it would smell all the way down the hall.

Ms. Carroll also needs to tone down the product placements and the musical comedy references as well as the plug for her previous book in the story.

Ms. Carroll has a great deal of talent and it's a shame that it's being wasted on flimsy premises, contrivances, and [bad] jokes.

What fun!
I normally do not like first person offerings so I opened this with trepidation. Truth be told, it was a freebie at a writer's conference in NYC. I found myself on the way out the door to a doctor's appointment and needed a book. I grabbed and ran.

I am so glad I did! From the very beginning ad to the introduction of Liz, Nell and Jem to the yo-yo guru and chef Jack, I was hooked. I read at stoplights and in traffic jams! I stayed up late.

The premise is fresh and Ms. Carroll did a fabulous job with it. She didn't overdo the reality tv show nor did she underdo it. She offered hysterical characters that didn't devolve into caricatures. Her sensitivity to gay and lesbian issues was very much appreciated by me as well.

I happen to love neat wrap-ups. Everyone was taken care of by the end except for our Mr. Bryon. I am actually hoping that her next book will be the woman that conquers him and puts him in his place.

Liz Pemberly and her gang will go on my shelf of keepers. First chick lit book to do that! I am a die hard regency and historical gal so this book had to impress me.

And it did. There is even a bit of intrigue... is Jack trying to kill Liz?

A Delightful Romp that's Very Real!
The author is right on the cutting edge of popular culture. Having worked in the field of publishing, I know that books are written and bought long before their publication date, and my guess is that REALITY CHECK, which debuted in January, 2003, was well along in the publishing pipeline LONG before many of the current TV reality dating shows, and even some of the big non-dating shows like "American Idol" ever made it to the small screen. The advertising agency scenes are right on target ! Obviously the author, a native NYer, knows her turf. REALITY CHECK is delightful entertainment, taking a deliciously wry look at America's seeming endless fixation with Reality TV shows, particularly the dating shows.

All the Basics
I received this book as a gift for planning my wedding and used it religiously to make sure I did not forget any details. "Checklist" takes you through all the basics...etiquette, timeline, suggestions etc. The premise is, if you use the list and check off all you've finished and all that doesn't apply to you, you will have considered all the elements of a wedding. In the end, your careful planning and use of the checklist will reward you with a beautiful day that you will remember forever, and guests who are pleased that you anticipated their every need. (The book doesn't include decorating ideas, etc., so I purchased Martha Stewart Weddings MAGAZINE and used online resources.)

A Perfect Planner for a Perfect Wedding!
This is just what you need to organize your thoughts, work out the details, and prepare for an absolely elegant wedding. I had very little time to spare, and this helped me figure out what I needed to do, by when, and for what. I can't wait to read the REVISED Version! It will be even better.

Great Companion Books!!
When Amazon teamed this book with "With These Words...I Thee Wed: Contemporary Wedding Vows for Today's Couples" for their "Best Value" sale, a dear friend was kind enough to buy both for my upcoming wedding. And without a doubt, this duel gift has served as the most useful in making my wedding the ultimate event I desired. A bit of a perfectionist, I wanted to express vows above the norm--romantic, yet realistic. Superior, progressive and unusual, yet from the heart. No small order. But "With These Words" exceeded my expectations and I created a vow that Ron and my guests will never forget! The only thing left was to make certain every wedding detail was attended to and that's where this checklist book saved the day! Yikes, perfectionist-me had actually overlooked some vital details. So if you want your wedding to become your greatest memory, get "With These Words...I Thee Wed" and "Checklist For a Perfect Wedding" and relax...your dreams will come true.

A dud
This book's title holds great expectations, yet it's a very slim volume of 32 pages. It is in fact a RAND report that says little more than hey Army wake up, your doctrine for urban warfare is out of date and you need to revise FM 90-10 and don't forget about air ops too, etc. You can find more meat on urban warfare in culling through news articles. The only good thing about this book, which is paperback not hardcover, is its bibliography.
