Best Book on Maple Leafs' history! This is a great book. It contains 75 best players, as well as coaches, from late 1920s to 2002. All favorite players are here in this book, including Darryl Sittler, Syl Apps, Mats Sundin, and Curtis Joseph. Coach Punch Imlach is also in it. It has both color and black & white photographs. It is for all Leafs fans who bleed blue & white and also for any hockey fans.

A good survey of Canada's contributionCanada's contribution to the Allied war effort in WWII is often overlooked, especially when considering army and air campaigns. Indeed, a good many Canadians served in the British military instead of the Canadian (especially the RAF), and they get lost in the shuffle. Contrasted against that, however, is the fact that the Canadian army had a D-Day beach to itself (Juno), and this army played a major role in the continental campaign that followed (just ask the Dutch and Belgians), not to mention the previous battles in Italy. This book helps to fill the gap in nicely, if in less detail than I would have liked. It is obvious that Bercusen has studied his material. The addition of some photos was a nice touch. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Canada's contribution in the "last great war." I look forward to reading his offering on Canada's effort in the Korean War (Blood on the Hills).
a comprehensive look at Canada's role in WW IIFor anyone who ever wondered what role Canadians had in WW II, Maple Leaf against the Axis is a comprehensive and enjoyable read. Although Bercuson doesn't go into great detail describing key battles he gives you an overview of the Canadian contributions in WW II. He describes the mental and military conditions of the Canadian Army before and during the war. It is an easy and unbiased read; Bercuson is not shy to point out the inadequacies and problems with the Canadian army. In conclusion, Bercuson is able to describe what the allies truly accomplished..."the sheer determination of mortal men who pitted flesh against steel and concrete, and finally prevailed"

A Must! So, just how many Leafs came from Fergus, Ontario? This book can tell you! This truly is a must for all diehard Leaf fans, and it does not disappoint. If anything, it overwhelms you with information, statistics, and anything and everything else you could possibly want to know. You'll even find a list of "Leafs Who Have Sported A Moustache Or Beard?" What else do you need?!

Great Pictures and Lots of informationThis book had great action pictures of Cujo. I really liked the tips Cujo gave for younger players to help them to improve their game. I also thought Curtis Joesph's schedule at the end of the book was neat too. Anyone who likes Cujo or the Toronto Maple Leafs should get this book.

How an owner can run a team into the groundThe book isn't up to date (it stops somewhere in 1989) but gives a horrifying view into the obvious lack of love for the team and the building (Maple Leaf Gardens) and into the power of the former owner of the Leafs, who almost ruined one of hockey's greatest franchises. The book describes the great history of the Leafs and has beautiful pictures to illustrate it(Barilko's great flying goal). The major issue of the book is the fall of the Leafs, at the hand of their former owner, Ballard. The poor handling of promising players by incompetent managers, the personal vendettas with members of the press (Foster Hewitt and the destruction of his famous gondola) and other owners, the petty comments on everything and everybody in hockey, it's a miracle the team and the building survived Mr. Ballard and his illustrious friend, Yolanda, at all. Given the recent results of the Leafs and their departure from the Gardens, a new, revised version of this great book might be what the fans are waiting for.

Definitley a Leaf fanHoward Berger, the Leafs beat reporter for Toronto Sports Radio has proven himself dedicated to his job, as he works very hard at it. This book provides an indication that, while he works hard, most likely is enjoying himself for he is a genuine fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The memories he scribbles are not unlike those of any fan, not neccessarily one that works with the team. He certainly has an eye for the dramatic, the significant, the thought provoking, and of course, the memorable. His somewhat juvenile sense of humour may wear thin after a little while. However, he still appears to be bright and astute when it comes to reporting on the Leafs, and writing about them. His other book, "On the Road" (not ot be confused with Kerouac) is a series of tales about life traveling with and NHL team. That is also a good book to get ahold of for any Leafs fan, or sports fan for that matter.

Good reference for Leaf fansAlthough there is very little writing involved, the authour did his work on this one. An impressive compilation of stats and tidbits about the Toronto Maple Leafs. Worth a pickup, but a bit out of date. However, if you are looking for neat anecdotes on the Leafs, look elsewhere.

Simply put: The worst hockey book ever writtenHow this book got written is BEYOND ME. It was boring. It was written by a radio guy. It gets into the monotonous details of NOTHING. You wanna go on the road with a hockey team? Who cares what the author saw at the movies between the morning skate and game time! What we want to know is what go-go bars they were in and why! We want people. We want dirt. Yeah, that's what happens on the road in pro sports...but he didn't have the guts to break the old credo of "What happens on the road stays on the road." Think of this as a black-lined secret government document for sports.
Waste (or waist) of timeMy title says it all. There were so many spelling mistakes and/or typos (including the one above in the bio of Tie Domi) that I gave up half way through the book. If the author and/or the publisher couldn't bother to produce a quality book I couldn't be bothered finishing it.
Not what i expectedIn the rough and tumble world of hockey what Berger produces is a fluff piece. I wanted to know what life was like on the road for an NHL team during a season but all i got from it was Berger's panoramic views from the window seat in the airplane. Who gives a crap what the city skyline was like? Instead of offering us a hard hitting account, he offers us with buddy buddy schmoozing with a couple hockey players and the coach. It was obvious that the players didn't want him around. Hardly ever did Berger give us accounts of him being with the players hangining out after the game or on days off. The closest thing to it was talking with Doug Gilmour on the street but he left in a hurry to go see his momma.(I thought he was supposed to detail the players and the team not his momma.) If i was going to request access to cover a team, i would lay down what i wanted to accomplish for the book and if i couldn't come to an agreement with the team, then i wouldn't produce a fluff piece just to let the world know i was around some hockey players. If Berger's goal was to remain buddies with the players and management, then what he should of done was chronicle another team not so close to his heart.
