this book is exemplary of an aristocratic book that has no tangible value for anyone who reads it. As a Financial Analyst I found some of the reading very dull and and unrelated to the topic of financial analysis.

Practical Handbook
I bought this handbook based on a review by another customer. I found it to fit my purpose and I'm glad to had made the purchase. The handbook is a practical source guide for financial analysts. It is not another academic regurgation found in other texts. The author, Vincent Muro, had brought his diverse experience, knowledge & innovativeness to bear in this practical guidebook for the busy financial practitioner who could use it as a constant reference guide. The text blends well the theory with the practice and offered numerous illustrations. The charts & diagrams in the front & back cover as well as in the text itself puts into perspective how the various financial analysis techniques could be applied. Apart from the traditional techniques, new measures & analytic were offered as well, making this handbook a must-have & a good buy. I think this handbook should have a quick summary at end of each chapters and probably should make use more of visual aids for the busy practitioner, which would make it even better. Nevertheless is deserves a 5-star rating !!!

Useful corporate finance
I am happy to have found a book like this. Its explanations have a surgical precission and are superbly structured, leading you to very sofisticated financial analysis tools with easiness. It is completely useful for the professional and the student who want and need to learn about corporate finance with the maximum rigour and depth but also want to avoid losing time in unpractical stuff. I wish I had discovered this book before!!

Hard to read, very theoretical, too general
I found this book tough to plow through. Straight from the "ivory tower", it belongs in a college classroom, not in the real business world. It is quite general, so perhaps it is helpful in some segments of business. I found it hard to relate to my world of commercial software development.

One of the best books that I've ever read on any topic
This is an excellent book. Thorough plan on how to implement a new product process and senior management's role. We're using this at our company to define the processes.

Essential for anyone involved with product development.
This is definitely a senior executive's reference or summary to product development. Some of the essential concepts in taking products to market are covered. Steven Wheelwright and Kim Clark capture the essence of making products successful although many concepts have been captured already in the field of software engineering. The importance of senior management's involvement in the process, effective portfolio management and the journey to building effective teams are well laid out. We have found that product managers can relate to the content and use some of the macro principles on projects. Reading this with "Developing Products in Half the Time", "Managing the Design Factory", "Commercializing New Technologies", "Microsoft Secrets", "Seeing Differently", and "The Innovator's Dilemma" will give you a full appreciation of the content.

Talk About Ironic!
I just finished reading this book about the "new executive assistant". Of course it emphasizes attention to detail, checking your work, accuracy, etc. Upon completing the extensive skills test in the back of book, I was horrified to find the following blatant errors: 1. In the vocabulary section, the questions skip from #56 to #61, yet in the answer section, these questions do appear. 2. The proofreading section fails to point out periods that are missing at the end of two sentences. Here's the kicker: 3. When I went to check my answers for the spelling section, I discovered that there were only two answers out of 110 questions. To top, there were answers for #110 - 122, which didn't exist in the first place.

OK, can anyone find a proofreader at McGraw Hill to catch these types of errors? How can anyone take this book seriously? The other person who reviewed this book obviously did not read the whole thing. What a disappointment! I do recommend another book that I read. It's called The Valuable Office Professional by Michelle Burke. She is right on the money. There are some more in-depth self-evaluation tests, which go much further than vocabulary and grammar skills. I also got some information about her consulting service, which I am trying to convince management our company needs. That's my summary of this book. Good luck with your administrative careers no matter who you are or where you live!

Interesting Read
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Duncan's book. I found it an easy read, packed with lots of excellent information.

As with the other reviewer I was extremely disappointed in the skills test in the back of the book. Missing questions, answers to questions that weren't printed.

I wonder if Ms. Duncan has read her own book? Did she review the skills test information in the back before it was published? If the fault lies with the publisher, I hope she got her money back. I also hope she'll do a re-print with the skill test corrected because I found it very helpful in identifying weak areas in my own skill set.

I've been an Executive Secretary/Assistant for the past ten years. Often a good assistant is taken for granted. I appreciated Ms. Duncan's affirmation that my job is more than a job, it's a career and that not just anyone can be a good assistant.

If you can get past all the problems with the skill test in the back of the book, I think you'll find the content extremely interesting, insightful, and motivating.

Ms. Duncan has written a mentoring masterpiece!
"The New Executive Assistant" is a must-read for aspiring or seasoned executive assistants, their bosses, and everyone in between.

Ms. Duncan doesn't just advise you to develop a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your administrative career, she guides you to discovering both what you want out of life and what your career can provide. She covers all the important bases for surviving in today's fast-paced world: learning to adapt to change (technical and cultural); mastering the fundamentals of communicating what you really mean; tapping into your management and leadership potential; handling both yourself and others in conflict situations; promoting yourself, your boss, and your company; and regaining your spiritual "center". Most importantly, however, Ms. Duncan asks wether or not you are cut out to be an executive assistant. Life is too short to just have a job; whatever it may be, find a career that works for you, challenges you, and fits your personality.

Packed with objective insights, advice, and enjoyable witticisms, "The New Executive Assistant" delivers. I found in this one book what countless seminars and 50-minute training series have not been able to provide; I found truely usable, relevant insights and information. Ms. Duncan has created a mentoring master piece for executive assistants (and anyone who wants to understand them)!

Just a bunch of interviews
There's not a lot of meat here, mostly just the transcripts of the author's interviews with a very limited number of people in the business. Most of the interviewees take extra care to promote themselves and berate the people off of whom they make their living, and very little of what they do in making a deal is revealed. 94 pages are contact lists, boilerplate, appendices and indexes with information that is mostly out of date or easily obtained elsewhere.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Making $1,000,000
Mr. Lewinski has done his research. Discussing the "how to's" with industry professionals, the author has gone straight to the jugular . . the topic on every aspiring screenwriter's mind: HOW DO I GET AN AGENT? HOW DO I GET A MANAGER? AND WHAT IN THE HE[ck] IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO!?

You've punched out 120 pages of heartfelt goodness onto 8 1/2 by 11 white paper. Now's the time to get serious.

A readable how-to
I found John Lewinski's book to be very pertinent to the questions I had as a hopeful screenwriter. His very readable style makes me recommend it highly.

Sexual Harassment, Shades of Gray : Guidelines for Managers, Supervisors & Employees

Written for managers!!!!!
I am suffering sexual harassment on the job and wanted a book that truly dealt with the ramifications from a legal and emotional perspective. I did not find what I was looking for.

Great Teaching Tool For Trainers
I am a trainer for a fortune fifty company and find this Guideline For Managers, Supervisors and Employees to be the best book available on the market to help educate our workforce. Thank you Susan Webb, this is a great teaching tool.

On the mark and to the point!
Sexual harassment cases and situations are very difficult. This work helps give supervisors and managers the edge. The more we understand and know about the difficulties surrounding these very unique and sensitive situations and how to handle them the less problems for everyone. Susan L. Webb is very proactive in her work. I also recommend works by victims as they can give you a sense of emotion from the view of the victim. Ultimate Power Enemy Within the Ranks is one such book. Another good book is After Silence: Rape and My Journey Back.

Books such as this serve as a valuable resource for everyone and I applaud Susan L. Webb for her great contributions.

Nearly all business books deal with managing a company. The Valuable Office Professional, by Michelle Burke, addresses the usually neglected but nonetheless critical matter of managing a manager. Approaching issues from the perspective of the staff, Burke shows how to develop the assistant-boss relationship into a true partnership. Tips and exercises are included to help transform these often one-way associations into effective teams, even when the boss chooses not to see the assistant as a counterpart.

The not so valuable book of office professionals.
I order the book and I started to read it as soon as I got it out of the box. I also ordered the Webster"s secretarial handbook. This book was a lot better and had useful information. The Valuable office professional was a bit confusing to read. The information was very pointless.

Career minded Admin need this book
This book was great! I have Michelle Burke's five core competencies hanging in my office to let others know how seriously I take my career. I have read the book several times and have found it extremely useful and motivating. Great Book for anyone at any stage of their career.

Michelle Burke's Corporate Value
Burke's invaluable 'Valuable Office Professional' has saved our organization both the headaches of administrative training as well as the cost of on-going educational maintenance. The beauty of her insight applies quite poignantly to help increase the productivity of not only the office assistant but CEO's alike. Recommended for all who endeavor to succeed in corporate America.

not worth it
There are many better books out there that are easier to follow and comprehend if you are not a law student. Not impressive.

Great overview of main legal issues for managers
This book is amongst others used at the Stanford MBA course as an introduction to legal issues that may arise for managers in a variety of business situations. It is comprehensive and is well illustrated with landmark case studies and relevant hypotheticals. Constance Bagley takes out most of the cumbersome legalistic language and makes the complexities of US corporate and civil law understandable.

Indispensable for Execs, Mgrs, Invest. Pros, Mgmt Consultant
For the benefit of all the people who cannot take her course, Prof. Connie Bagley has written this book that has the same title as her course (she teaches a quarter each at the Stanford and Harvard Business Schools). It is an extremely very well thought out and well written book. Throughout the book Prof. Bagley has kept in mind the reader's background and organized and written content in a way that will be of maximum benefit to the reader.

This book is one of the best investments that any person can make. While almost everyone will benefit from this book, I feel this book will be indispensable to the following readers: 1. Any person in a Business Administration/Management role, especially Executives and Managers in large corporations, Investment Professionals and Management Consultants. 2. Professionals associated with legal matters who want a refresher and a quick reference book that covers key aspects of all the important laws. 3. Any person who wants to gain a knowledge of the legal environment, especially the environment in which business is conducted.

Unlike a law book intended for specialist lawyers, this book is readable by people who are not lawyers. After reading this book or using it as a reference one can get a good understanding of the legal process (how the entire legal system works) and several important areas of law such as Contracts, Torts, Product Liability, Intellectual Property, Labor, Environmental, Antitrust, Real Estate, Consumer protection, Securities, and International Business. The legal topics discussed are on the leading edge of business regulation. They include the World Trade Organization, employer liability for sexual harassment, compensation and liability act, and HIV in the workplace.

In keeping with the Internet age, Prof. Bagley analyzes the implications of the Internet and Information Technology to several laws (such as copyright law in the cyberspace), and also gives several Internet sources for the reader to conduct further research.

It is remarkable that the book covers each of the topics perfectly to the extent required - nothing more and nothing less. The book has around 1050 pages and the time invested in each page is worth the rewards.

As Prof. Bagley says, the purpose of the book is to provide you a good understanding of the legal system, how the laws work, removal of any fear of laws, how to avoid legal mistakes, how to protect yourself, when to take what legal action and, most importantly, make you smart enough to know when to go to your lawyer. You cannot expect to practice law after reading this book but you definitely will know when to seek legal help, and how to communicate effectively with your legal advisors.

Prof. Bagley has also written another book "The Entrepreneur's Guide to Business Law". If only every entrepreneur read this book before starting out, the number of failures caused by legal blunders will be close to zero.

Both her books are extremely very well thought out and well written. I was fortunate to get into Prof. Connie Bagley's high demand "Managers and the Legal Environment" course at Stanford Graduate School of Business. The course is an absolute gem of a course. While this course is a high demand course, her other course "Legal Challenges in Entrepreneurship" is usually multiply over subscribed with around 150 students wanting to get into a class of 66! Prof. Bagley is a wonderful teacher and an amazing person. Her class was a wonderful learning experience for me and I thank her for that. I'm sure that after reading the book you too will thank her for having written this book.

Negative, cynical & pessimistic junk!
As an owner/professional in a hospitality business I HOPED to find some lessons and guidance in this book...I found a burned out husband/wife team who could do nothing more than share miserable annecdotes. No positive lessons, no gainfull knowledge, no advantage from experience. If you want to be talked out of owning a restaurant, or any other small business, this is the book for you. Just don't judge your fellow man too harshly, after reading this book you'll have little faith in the goodness, the potential or the opportunity in business and people.

An excellent and funny look at managing restaurants
Restaurant Reality is one man's (later one husband and wife's) journey through all levels of restaurant management. Drawing upon a lifetime of experience in restaurant management, Lefever's anecdotes give the reader a great sense of the ups and downs, sometimes too many downs, of buying, owning, and managing a successful restaurant. If you are interested in an eye-opening expose on what the textbooks don't tell you about owning your own restaurant, take a look at "Reality." If anything, it is good f

Funny stuff
I was in a class Lefever taught, so I was skeptical of the reasons he assigned this book. However, it turned out to be one of the best reads I ever had in college. I read the book in a week. The title says something about reality, so prepare yourself. This book shows the good, the bad, and the ugly of the restaurant business. Oh, and the funny too.

self-destruction on parade
This was a very interesting book about a very interesting man. Interesting is about the nicest thing I can think to say about Billy Martin. Although his exploits have been legendary, the stuff in this book takes it too a new level. According to the author, Pete Golenbock, Martin has several women going in different cities at the same time. He was supporting an underage girl and her family on the West Coast and engaged on the East Coast. His life, as portrayed in this book, was more out of control than you suspected. Golenbeck caters to our interest in these areas and with life on the field, in the club house and in the owners office. You have to catch your breath periodically when reading about the life of Billy Martin.

On the negative side, the book turns into a defense of the person traveling with Martin the day of his fatal accident. You'll recall that Christmas Day story that told how his friend from Detroit was behind the wheel when it happened. You may recall later on (after consulting with his lawyer, no doubt) the driver suddenly became the passenger. Strangely, the lone eyewitness decided he was actually sitting elswhere in the vehicle after he had time to think about it. Along comes Golenbock to the rescue with photos, medical reports and diagrams showing how Billy was actually the driver. Sorry, I'm not that interested. Let the courts decide that one. The book should have been shorter than it was. I came away with the idea that intimate information was shared with the author in return for his public defense of Martin's passenger/chaffeur. It was a disjointed way to end the otherwise interesting book. But then, Martin's death was a disjointed way to end an otherwise interesting life.

Five stars for historical details; One star for analysis
Compard to David Faulkner's bio on Martin, this one by Golenbock has more insider details about Martin's life that make it the more interesting read. What does it in, unfortunately is Golenbock's peculiar analysis. Like so many people who like to ultimately elevate Billy the man higher than he deserves, more time is spent blaming George Steinbrenner for all of Billy's problems off the field. And it soon gets to the point where Golenbock actually performs what was once the impossible and makes you think he's too harsh on Steinbrenner. The bottom line is that Billy Martin, unlike his friend Mickey Mantle, never came to terms with what drinking and carousing could do to his life and for that, he had only himself to blame for not checking into the Betty Ford Clinic like Mantle did. Billy kept drinking not because of George Steinbrenner, but because of who he was, and that was a person with no morals whatsoever.

A sad story well told
Without generating undeserved sympathy for the man, this book documents the sad life of Billy Martin, the extent to which his troubles were self-inflicted, and his tortured relationship with George Steinbrenner. The insecurities of both of these men feed on each other's, with each convinced that the other is out to upstage and destroy him, and each ultimately proving the other right, time after time. The years have provided an interesting postscript, however. Just as Martin's early death seemed almost inevitable because of his inability to confront and defeat his demons, author Golenbock ends the book with a forecast of inevitable doom for Steinbrenner, predicting with certainty that his many shortcomings will stop the Yankees from ever again achieving respectability. Golenbock was wrong, of course. Steinbrenner's late 90s Yankees are among baseball's all-time great teams, guided by a superb manager with no apparent interference from above. Perhaps Steinbrenner did in fact learn something from Martin's sad demise.

Seriously?
The title seems to say it best "An Astrological Expose of Everyone in the Office" and it should be taken with a grain of salt. This is not the ultimate book in deciding someone's working capabilities, though it tries to make itself out to be. And it is not the essential Evil HR Directors hiring handbook, though it seems to be pointing in that direction.
It is an overall look at the business side of each of the signs of the Zodiac. It is interesting to see how Mr. Ford associates the business aspects with each of the Signs.
Being a Capricorn who is married to and in business with a Scorpio, I was interested in seeing how Mr. Ford placed this kind of relationship. According to him, we should fail somewhere along the line. Well, only time will tell... 9-)
I would suggest that if you are curious about the business capabilities of your staff, you should look at their annual reviews and the references they provided you when they submitted their resumes.
This book, while interesting to read, seems to be placing itself as a substitute for making personal judgements of a person based on experiences. Beware of the interview where you find this book on the HR Director's desk.

Working Together Effectively
I found this book to be extremely helpful during my first few months at a new job. I'm not the type of person to check my horoscope every day and live by what it says, and the same goes for this book. I do however feel that each sign has specific characteristics that surface in the work place especially during intense situations and projects where it may be helpful to know the type of person you are dealing with. By modifying my actions based on what Mr. Ford suggests in dealing with a certain sign has proven to effectively influence the outcome of a desired situation. I will however say that by no means should this book be used in hiring/firing individuals due to the fact that each person has specific qualities that may not be related to a sign. If you are having difficulties working with a coworker, you may benefit from reading what Mr. Ford suggests are effective ways in dealing with that person. This book reminds me of the scores achieved by taking the Meyers Briggs test since a lot of the work habits formed are directly related to the sign you are. It is nice to finally have a book that talks about people you work with and spend a majority of the day with versus another book about astrology in love and relationships.

Finding the job most suited for one's birth sign
A welcome and seminal contribution to Metaphysical Studies in general, and Astrology reference collections in particular, Zodiac Manager: An Astrological Expose Of Everyone In The Office by J. T. Ford is an unique astrology book which has been written especially to enable the reader to make an astrologically based metaphysical study of workplace colleagues.
