Good Reference Book
The book comes with all the information that is needed to prepare for the Certification. However it does not provide with specific examples as to how to use all the information. I would say this is a book to keep in the book shelf because it contains a lot of information: from Organizational Leadership, Team Development, Process Management, Quality Management Tools, Supplier Management and all necessary information needed to be known by a Certified Quality Manager. Lots of theoretical knowledge is portrayed on this book.

The Chef Manager, by Michael Baskette
Excellent! Long overdue. Culinary Art Schools are rolling out baby chefs in record numbers and although they may have the culinary knowledge, only time and experience will give them the managerment skill needed to operate a first rate, organized, efficient and effective restaurant. Management is tough in any field, but particularly so in the restaurant business and I hope Chef/Owner Managers will read and apply the management practices discussed in this book. Chef Mangers who did not have the opportunity to get formal culinary training may also find this book useful. The information on Total Quality Management could and perhaps should have been a separate book. Simply written, The Chef Manager deserves two thumbs up.

Common Careers, Different Experiences: Women Managers in Hong Kong & Britain
Published in Paperback by Hong Kong University Press (15 June, 2001)
Authors: Katharine Venter and Katherine Hills
Amazon base price: $29.50

How do they differ?
In science, one often strives to conduct experiments where you have 2 sets of similar subjects, and you vary the environments in different ways, to see what transpires. That is the spirit of this fascinating treatise. The authors contrast the experiences of female managers in Britain and Hong Kong. Both groups are well educated (usually with an undergraduate degree at least) and are middle class to upper middle class. Plus, both countries are developed.

They found some striking differences. In Britain, if you are a middle class woman, chances are, so too were your parents. Courtesy in part of the British class structure. But in Hong Kong, due to the rapid postwar industrialisation, there is far less correlation, and a greater belief by the women in meritocratic advancement.

The authors go on to discuss other factors. An interesting sidenote is the availability of servants to the Hong Kong women, due to an endless supply of uneducated labour in Guangdong. This lets women maintain a career path soon after childbirth. A harder option in Britain, despite maternity leave legislation.

All in all, a good comparison of the female struggle for careers and achievements across cultures.

This book is essential for any ambitious person!
I originially bought this book for a class I was taking, thinking that it would simply fulfill a requirement and nothing more. I couldn't have been more wrong! Long after I needed this book for my class, I consulted it time and time again for tips on how to write effective letters for scholarships, conveying sensitive information, and much more. Norman Sigband and Arthur Bell have created the definitive source for how to advance in the bureaucratic world that is the United States.

This book's findings come from extensive research. It is an excellent book for someone serious about understanding what makes a manager competent.

The cutting edge of style management
Serious reading for investment professionals involved with managing multiple manager funds. Unlike other publications e.g. the Handbook of Equity Style Management or Style Investing, this work provides a cohesive and mathematically rigid approach to the quantitative management of multiple manager programs. Inside you will find an introduction to the concept of investment style, a review of investment manager style classification methods as well as an excellent development of dynamic completeness fund methodologies for managing risk in multiple manager funds. Although the main focus of the book is managing misfit risk, I would have liked to see more on the equally important considerations involved in structuring a multiple manager program e.g. quantitative models of diversification benefits and mean-variance efficiency which would govern the style allocation decision as well as the optimal number of managers to be used within each style etc. Essential and extremely valuable reading!

Good, concise, to the point infosec title
It is ironic that the advent of the computer promised to dramatically reduce paper usage; today's 1,000-page-plus computer-security tomes have probably single-handedly deforested whole regions of the earth. A happy exception to this trend of titanic texts is Enterprise Security: The Manager's Defense Guide; which is relatively concise yet highly informative.

It provides a good overview of core information security issues and concepts. It takes a big-picture approach to information systems security, not bogging down the reader in arcane minutiae.

Overall, it has a more management- and process-oriented look at security and it a valuable title for anyone needing to know about information systems security without sacrificing a forest in the process.
