a money saver
This book paid for itself the first time I changed an electrical switch. I am getting psyched up for working on the drippy faucet. I am now enlightened about the mysterious workings of the toilet and know I will probably never have to meet the plumber. My only criticisim is that I thought the lesson on installing an underground sprinkler system was a bit far out and doesn't truly fit the category of "Incredibly Simple Weekend Projects" I was researching how to change a toilet, which turned out to be simple enough after I watched and paid someone to do it. I would definately include that how-to in the next edition.

A Terrific Help!
This book is a must-have for anyone doing their own home repairs. Step-by-step directions are presented in clear, simple language. Each section begins with a list of all necessary tools--no surprises just when you've got that toilet tank in pieces! Illustrations actually look like what you need to see. Even my dad asked for a copy of this book!

De-Mystifies Home Repair!
This is the perfect book for those of us who know nothing about home repair. Its step-by-step instructions are clear and easy to follow, without technical jargon or mystery widgets. The cautionary notes help allay my fears that I could do something dangerously dumb, especially in the electrical and plumbing sections. This book is a "must" in homes where no one's "handy!"

Galen Grimes has written the 10 Minute Guide to PC Upgrades to offer valuable insight and help to assist his readers to upgrade their own PC's. About Your House
This book is wonderful and especially if you have a house which is not so old but needs little work here and there. I got a copy from my friend and use it all the time. But sometimes it needs little courage to use this book and expertise in tool handling. I will rate this book better than the Time Life books specially for the brave ones.

About Your House
I found the book excellent for the average home owner. I recently attended his talk in the Pullman Historic District and I found it very informative and got many of my questions answered. Being an owner of a historic Pullman rowhouse built in 1881, I knew it needed special attention then what was being advertised by just regular contractors. Once a resident of Palos, I love old homes and I'm glad I have moved to Pullman and can be a part of the restoration. Thank you for coming to Chicago!

A very nice book
Mr. Wright has done a very nice job with this book. It is an excellent overview of the automotive industry and a good all-around automotive book (especially for anyone interested in the automobile). The title tells it like it is. It is obvious a lot of work went into the Snap-on Corporation history, and can be appreciated as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and have made reference to it in the Snap-on Collectibles book as an excellent source for information on Snap-on's history. Mr. Wright's book makes a nice addition to any automotive or Snap-on collectors library.

Its a great book I reccomend it to anyone
I think its a great book and I thought it deserved more then one revei

The American Woman's Home: Or, Principles of Domestic Science: Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful, a

Moral housekeeping and healthly living - 1869
Catherine Beecher's famous sister, Harriet, may have sparked some of the ideas presented, but did not actually contribute to the work of writing this book. Catherine was a childless, unmarried, middle-class woman, whose great tragedy was that her fiance was lost at sea before they were married.

She was an intellectual who lived in a time when women were severely constrained by domestic drudgery. Catherine Beecher strived to ennoble women's traditional role through education:

"It is the aim of this volume to elevate both the honor and the remuneration of all employments that sustain the many difficult and varied duties of the family state, and thus to render each department of woman's profession as much desired and respected as are the most honored professions of men."

There is a great deal of moralizing in this book, about lifestyle, Christian charity, care of children and servants, and so forth. In this, Catharine Beecher was a product of her century. Yet some of the observations are surprisingly astute, even for today's readers. For instance, there is a humorous passage about cooking with butter that will have you smiling about rancid butter in every dish. In so many ways, the modern homemaker has less to worry about. We can purchase conveniences that were undreamt of 130 years ago.

This is a self-consciously "American" perspective on keeping a middle class house. Yet the French are looked to as having perfected cooking and many other things, and this sort of repetitious praise can grate on the American reader. Beecher was addressing the American woman during the Civil War and post-Abolition time period, during a great influx of European immigrants and when the population was actively expanding westward. She had it in mind to influence the young woman of a certain generation, and in many ways, her ideas were both more advanced and more orderly than what had gone before.

This book is a *must read* for students of Women's History as it pertains to women in the home. If you are interested in the 19th century lifestyle, you will find many domestic details here.

How to life comfortably post "HydroCarbon Man".
The Beecher sisters and Mark Twain were comfortable neighbors in 1869, living the good life on Hartford's elm lined streets. Mark wrote humorously about world travel or of his adopted home town, what was to become the "Insurance Capital of the World" while Harriet Beecher Stowe could claim authorship of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Catherine Beecher wrote a very practical "how to" book, the American Woman's Home, with a little help from her famous sister. The life they lived had not yet been saturated with the influence of petroleum....that would take some time to get up to speed.

Providing answers to more than 1,000 frequently asked questions about home repair and improvement is no small task. Ask the Family Handyman manages to handle so many queries in its nearly 400 pages by providing fast answers that can, at times, feel a bit too brief. The novice do-it-yourselfer may find that the book merely scratches the surface of a few topics (installing a dishwasher or a built-in ironing board) and raises as many questions as it answers. To get a sense of its scope, realize that Ask the Family Handyman takes a topic, such as setting ceramic tile, and covers in a few pages what has been tackled elsewhere in entire books. Still, this book is a compilation of real questions submitted to The Family Handyman magazine and, as such, it represents a lot of real inquiries and concerns posed by real homeowners. Whether your project involves drywall, paint, plumbing, window installation, or driveway repair, this book will either answer your questions or give you a good starting point for more research. Along the way, hundreds of photos and illustrations will make things clearer. Readers will also find that the book provides sound advice. On the question of latex vs. oil paint, for example, Ask the Family Handyman offers tips similar to those spoken at most home improvement stores: that latex is the best choice in most situations because it dries faster, stays more flexible, breathes better and cleans up easier than oil-base paints. But the book then goes one step further and acknowledges what is spoken at the paint supply stores where most professional painters shop--oil-base is better for glossy, high-visibility applications such as doors and trim because it levels out better with fewer brush marks. So while Ask the Family Handyman may not be the ideal book for more complex home improvement projects, it will help you deal with those small, day-to-day projects, and give you plenty of tips and pointers along the way. --John Russell

One Person's Opinion
I found this book most useful. It contained just about every subject I needed to look up.

A Great Book
I thought the book was wonderful. The highly detailed pictures and clear instructions make this book a must have in every home. The book has assisted me from fixing our leaky outdoor faucet; too remodeling our kitchen. It has info on both inside and outside projects. It makes the most complex jobs seem easy, and the book pays for itself with the money you save from not getting a repair man.

Beautiful Easy Flower Gardens
This host of "the Natural Garden" on Northeast Public Radio has developed a low-maintenance approach to gardening that allows him to have a beautiful garden with interesting plants - and time for his family too.

This easy-to-read book starts with the very basics of gardening - the site, the soil and the tools a new gardener will need and then guides the reader in developing gardens for a wide range of sites. He explains how to design a garden, choose annuals and perennials for the site and each season, and then how to maintain that garden through the year. There are good source lists and a useful reference section.

The writer has a direct approach that is readable and useful for the novice gardener. The book is published by Rodale - a long-established and reliable publisher of gardening books.

Just Like On the Radio
As a longtime fan of Larry Sombke's occasional stint on WAMC's "Vox Pop" program, I was thrilled to find out about his books. Just like his radio self, Sombke's prose is smooth with clear explanations and illustrations accessible even to those of us with purple thumbs...

Good advice but annoying CD samples
Text is well-organized and understandable. Good appendices. However, free CD sampler has a few annoying features where software may change system files. Of course, you really don't get fix-it routines but you see glimpses of other proprietary software.

Pretty good prepartion guide for you and your computer
This book, unlike others I checked out, actually tells you how this will affect your computer. As a network administrator, I found this book a useful preparation guide as it covers the computer, OS, Network OS, applications, etc. Other books on this subject tend to give you the "big" picture, as in this is what will happen to your bank, this is how you set up a corporate y2k project if you are in management, etc. I don't really care about that stuff. This gives you the nuts and bolts.

Very, Very helpful and easy to follow for a novice.
I think the book is very well written. I am not a computer wiz and found the information easy to read and the instructions easy to follow. I never realized that the Year 2000 was such a big problem until I started reading about it in the newspaper. I began researching ways to check my computer and found this book to be the easiest to understand. There is plenty of info for everyone. A big plus was the CD. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs help with their computer.
