Around the House : Reflections on Life Under a Roof

In the mid-1980s, New Yorker staff writer David Owen saw a 200-year-old Connecticut farmhouse and decided to buy it. When he took his wife back to see it, he couldn't find it at first; when he did find it, his wife hated it. They bought it anyway, "probably because we believed that abandoning a house it had taken me a single morning to discover would be more complicated and inconvenient than living for the rest of our lives in a place we didn't like." Fortunately, "as luck would have it, both the house and the town have turned out to be pretty much exactly right for us." It's certainly done wonders both for the naturally handy Owen's repair skills and for his writing career; his first book, The Walls Around Us, was a delightfully chatty guide to real home repair for people with leaky roofs and carpenter ants. Owen returns to a subject clearly close to his heart with Around the House: Reflections on Life Under a Roof. Musing on the necessity of learning by doing, he writes, "The problem that most do-it-yourselfers face is how to acquire home-improvement skills without ruining the home they are trying to improve." Owen's answer is self-apprenticeship--he learned how to build a porch by repairing his front steps, how to measure and cut rafters by building playground equipment, and practiced his roofing skills by building a house for his cat. "With a few more years of practice," he says, "I'll be ready to approach my wife with an idea I've been mulling over lately: dismantling our house down to the foundation and building a new one from scratch." These eloquently funny essays on everything from bathtubs to telecommuting are the perfect vicarious pleasure for would-be do-it-yourselfers, the smugly apartment-bound, or the terminally lazy.

Dave Barry meets Bob Vila
For fans of David Owen's earlier book, The Walls Around Us, the style of this book will be familiar. Although it's less informative than the earlier book, Owen's musings about home ownership and home repair are very entertaining.

this is a wonderful, interesting, humourous, literate book -
This is a wonderful book - I bought it through amazon.com of course! - and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to anyone who enjoys the essay-form and is interested in the vissitudes of modern life. Humourous in an understated way and literate without being pretentious. BUY THIS BOOK and be prepared for a treat. A good Christmas present as well.

He is the most consistent humorist today
Owen can bury his funniest lines in his grand understated way. I haven't read a book of his that didn't make me laugh out loud, and this is no exception. If you haven't read him yet, this is a fine start.

IF and only IF . . .
If and ONLY if you are actively restoring a "Big Healey" for concours, this is a very useful book. When the authors call it a "restoration guide" they mean something very specific. Concours fanatics care about things like plating on screw heads, and the texture of wire loom tape. This book is crammed full of such stultifyingly dull minutae. It's powerful in the hands of a concours restorer, but almost useless if you're a shade tree mechanic trying to figure out how to replace a rusty fender. For everyone else it's guaranteed instant somnulence. Try and read any 5 pages of this book. I guarantee you you're snoring before you've turned two pages. But again, if you're a Healey concours fanatic, this is your book, man. Read it, live it, love it.

Outstanding book
This books is a must have for any Healey owner.

AH 100/100-6/3000 Restoration Guide is a must buy
I had an opportunity to ready and review this book even before I purchased it at Amazon.com. The book is very well thought out, easy to find the answers to specific restoration and concours questions and filled with specific picture examples.

This book is a must library addition for any owner of the Austin Healey marque both for reference and the enjoyment of reading about interesting insights into the history of the cars and the people who were the inspiration behind the production of the cars.

Beware of The Electrical Diagrams Riddle
I just bought a used copy through Amazon and it's certainly worth the price. So far, the only drawbacks I've noticed include (1) British terms for everything (though there is an English-to-American "conversion" chart), and (2) annoyingly, the electrical schematics are color coded with indecipherable abbreviations (what color would you imagine WS stands for -- or, GE, SW, RT?). I finally figured out that the publisher inexplicably neglected to translate the codes from GERMAN! Hence, if you decide to buy this book, which I recommend, here's the cracked code:
BL = Blau = Blue
BR = Braun = Brown
GE = Gelb = Yellow
GN = Gruen = Green
GR = Grau = Gray
RT = Rot = Red
SW = Schwarz = Black
VI = Violett = Violet
WS = Weiss = White
For 2-tone wires, the code lists the primary color first, and the stripe color second; thus a wire coded SW-WS stands for a black wire with a white stripe.

specs on the spark plug gap is incorrect
The haynes manual states that the spark plugs should be gapped to between 0.024 & 0.028...but in recent years, it was found that a gap of 0.032 to 0.037 works optimally with the stock ignition.

Overall it's an excellent book & tool if your interested in maintaining your 320i.

Haynes Repair Manual for BMW 320i 1975 thru 1983
This is an excellent repair manual with good info and pictures. I've used it on my 320i since 1978 when I bought it new and it has never been in one of those rip-off repair shops in 22 years. I've worked on every part of this car with the help of this book. Lots of good info and practical advice.

Boyd Coddington's How to Build Hot Rod Chassis

Amazon base price: $19.95

It's good, but missing the mark.
This is a good book. Its just that it's geared toward the person that has thousands of dollars in tools and equipment,a mega shop, and twenty years of experiance. For the average streetrodder who is working out of a 24X24 shop,it will be about two foot over there head. It's a good referance book, but shows very little for the budjet builder. Shows Chevy & Ford V8 installs, any other engine, your out of luck.

This book provides a foundation in more ways than one
Book is logical and provides pro/con review for different engineering/issues. Knowledge is power - this book is well written. Glad I'm not in competiion with Boyd.

Very good graphic instruction on hot rod frame building
I found this book to be a very good practical guide to building a frame from scratch. The pictures were well thought out with good timing. The text supplimented the photos to give a good feel for frame building do and dont's. When I had a question I sent it to their web page and got a phone call with the answer a day later. These folks know thier stuff and they love it!

Great Beginner Info Book
The author says a complete novice grandmother built her own system after reading this book. I believe it. I'm a novice and I found the book easy to read and the illustrations clear. The thickness of the book is intimidating but the page size is small and there are 200 pages of appendix plus a GOOD index. First 4 chapters are general info then each chapter covers a topic in depth (e.g., motherboard, power supply, printers, back-up methods). The appendix has info like error "beep codes" (when screen is dead), troubleshooting flow charts, other useful data). The author is a amooth and clear writer. I didn't try using the included CD. I borrowed a copy and now plan to buy a copy. Even though its now 18 months old, the procedures will be revelant for years and the guidance is general, not tied to any one system. A useful text for beginners and those who are not usually inclined to "look inside". The book will be helpful for a lot of common hardware problems. You will be able to use this book.

Very fast service!!!!!!!
The book Upgrading and Repairing PC's 11th Edition was in very good shape. A++++++++

upgrade & maintain your PC 3rd edition
this is the best book ever I learn more here then the other books I have, And the shipping was fast too--thank you very much--albert

Excellent book
My thoughts reflect the previous reviews pretty much. This book has been excellent at helping me deal with my home's 1950's era wiring. The major drawback to the book is the photographs. There are many photographs that I imagine would be very helpful, except that they are in black and white and it is extremely difficult to tell what exactly the pictures contain. Other than that, excellent book.

An excellent book for remodelers
This book is a great resource for the non-professional who has to evaluate and/or repair old residential electrical systems. It is well-organized, thoroughly safety-oriented, and practical. The author, David E. Shapiro, is a master electrician with substantial experience. He not only translates the National Electrical Code into practical advice for the do-it-yourselfer, he isn't afraid to express his opinions and recommendations, which is rare in this kind of book. This kind of practical advice, based on long experience, is more valuable than the just-the-facts approach taken by so many DIY authors.

There are two problems with the book, however, and both are related to the graphics. Many of the photographs are blurry or otherwise unhelpful, and there are a number of places in the text where more phtotographs or illustrations would be quite helpful. I would have given this book five stars if the graphics were done as professionally as the text.

Finally, the book doesn't really deal with the "knob-and-tube" type wiring found in many older homes. The author is clear that many subjects are beyond the scope of this entry-level book, and knob-and-tube is one of the subjects that doesn't make it in.

Much better than the reviews say!
I expected the photos to be hard to discern, as it was stated by other reviewers. As a Master Electrician, I found that this is not the case. Apparently, the photos are not for amateurs, since it requires someone who has actually seen such wiring "in the flesh" to really understand them.

No other book deals with old wiring so well. The subject is too often neglected by the industry.

The author wisely recommends consulting an experienced electrician. Unfortunately, too many young ones do not understand old wiring and many old ones are up to date with the current electric code.

A bit too general but adequate to get basic jobs done
With a chapter covering a project or two in each flavor of medium, this book in a general sense yeilds what you need to build basic walkways, walls, patios. On repairs of existing structures I believe it to do a much better job.

I've been looking for something more in depth on the subject of concrete (acid staining, texturing, etc) as an alternative to the standard tile or plain grey concrete. Unfortunately this book could not help me at all, they have one chapter devoted to concrete and its far from inspirational. I'm not asking for the world here, but if someone is going to name a book "complete" and end up with something thats just barely enough, I have to give it a just passing grade.

I recommend the following instead, especially since they are 1/2 the price but have better content:

(Better Homes and Gardens)
Step-By-Step Masonry and Concrete

(sunset)
Complete Masonry: Building Techniques, Decorative Concrete, Tools and Materials

*note: Sunset has several books on masonry, 3 of them are called "Complete Masonry", I've only had a chance to look at one of them. Also for inspiration and more in depth coverage of concrete, check out "Concrete Countertops: Design, Form, and Finishes for the New Kitchen and Bath" it is excellent, but you will sort of need a basic book in addition to it.

A near-perfect book for OUTDOOR masonry projects
The "Book Description" review is correct when it says that
"The Complete Guide to Home Masonry is the most comprehensive and useful guide to masonry for today's do-it-yourself homeowner."

About the only thing missing from this one-sentence summary is that the book is nigh-exclusively devoted to OUTDOOR projects. (The short exceptions are damp-proofing basement walls, and repairing fireboxes.)

The book features clear step-by-step instructions and color photographs (one good photo for each and every step of every project -- HUNDREDS of photos total) for working with natural stone, stone veneer, brick, glass block, concrete block, poured concrete, patio tile, stucco, and hypertufa.

The projects cover all the simple outdoor jobs (such as walkways, walls, and patios), the common elaborations (such as adding lattice panels to a block wall, or laying tile over concrete), and quite a number of complex constructs -- like "Building a Stone Moon Window".

EVERY section of text has one or more illustrating photographs to show what they're writing about. EVERY photograph is in color, with good contrast, color rendition, and composition. EVERY project includes an "Everything You Need" box, listing all the tools and materials required. EVERY tool that's used in the projects has (1) a picture in the "Masonry Tools & Equipment" chapter early in the book; (2) a closeup of the tool in use; and (3) explanatory text discussing proper technique. EVERY material used has pictures of all states through its life -- from the bags clearly depicting brand names like "Quikrete" and "Lehigh", to the dry materials, the mixing process, the layout stage, and finishing with the final assembled project.

If this book had the same comprehensive coverage for INDOOR projects (tiling bathrooms and creating concrete countertops are high on my wish list), it would be worth SIX stars!

Excellent and Easy to Follow
This was an excellent book on masonry and concrete projects. It was very easy to read and had several illustrations that show exactly what your project should look like. It goes through every step you should take. This is a great book for beginners and do-it-yourselfers.
