unfortunately lacking in info.
This had the potential to be a wonderful book, but it is lacking in the information that you would expect to get in the books of this series. The diseases and disorders section is esentially non-existant and the specific care of the different species is far too generalized and totally lacks detail. It is a very good book for beginners or those looking for overviews of the major species and their care, but that is about it. Still waiting for the Tortoise Manual - which is long overdue.

A must have book for your turtle library
This book is an excellent source of information for good turtle- tortoise husbandry. Robert DominguezV.P. Chino Valley Branch, Caliifornia Turtle and Tortoise Club (CTTC)CVBCTTC@WEBTV.NET

The best book I have ever read on the care of tortoises
I have used this book extensively to help me care for several species of tortoises, Leopards, Sulcatas, Redfoot and Yellowfoots. The content is highly accurate and every tortoise keeper should use this book as his "bible" of care specs.

Maybe not that good...
I'll offer a dissenting opinion. I didn't find the information in the book to be all that informative. There's little if anything different from what the manufacturers claim in their literature. Some of the sections seemed to be direct quotes from the manufacturers. Too brief, too many short blurbs. For me, it didn't help to distinguish between the wheat and the chaff in the aftermarket.

Excellent book with good mix of detail and media
Tom Currao put together an excellent book! I found each page to be exciting and filled with relevant detail. I was also able to identify with Tom's book because I also use the Mr. Gasket Desktop Dyno application for "figuring" out engine combinations. A handy list of suppliers is provided as is also an index. I feel that Tom's book has the best opportunity to become the defacto standard for replacing the now dated How to HOTROD Big-block CHEVYS book. I think that the book will be of special appeal to "grassroots" racers like me who need to be budget conscious while trying to go as fast as possible.

Lot of Tips
This book contains lot of recommendations during engine building. Only somebody with enough experience could write it. Don't miss it!

How to Keep Your Toyota Pickup Alive: Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot for 1975-1987/2 & 4 Wd

well done
This is a very good book for beginners just learning how to maintain their trucks. Some criticize it as too wordy, which is true, but it does provide insight as to why you're doing the maintenance and what to expect when things go wrong. It's a good complement to the factory repair manuals. It's good for other rigs, too.

This has similar highlights and flaws as Muir's other books.
Larry Owens has written a readable and useful primer on Toyota truck auto maintenance, very much in the spirit of Muir's "Compleat Idiot's" guide to VW Bug maintenance. Unfortunately it also has the same flaws: no wiring diagrams, and the Procedure:Step format can be confusing, especially when trying to cover many different vehicles and years. However, the drawings (by Joe Leahy) are priceless and the many little tips and hints Owens provides make this book well worth the money.

Trying to find this book, no luck so far.
This book was highly recommended to me by the head of the repair dept. at my local Toyota dealership as THE book to have as permanent reference for my 1975 20R engine.

Great detailed info, a lot of opinion, very retentive
Wayne has put out another good how-to book packed with great detail and very specific step-by-step procedures. This book fills in most of the details left out of the other books covering the subject, and adds in a number of the latest updates that should be done.

The down side is this book gives an all or nothing approach, with no allowances for low-cost rebuild appropriate for a low value car, or a partial rebuild for a race motor. The list of parts that must be replaced is excessive and out of line with most engine rebuild books, and even the factory work-shop manuals. His recommendation on machine shops is to go to the most expensive one in the country. The procedures for cleaning are extreme, and time-consuming, and not realistic for a shop interested in making money or an individual without unlimited time. There are also a number of number of recommendations made that are still up for debate in the 911 community.

I have rebuilt a number of 911 engines, and this is a must have book if you are planning to do one yourself, but take some of the recommendations with a grain of salt.

An encouragement and guide the weekend mechanic
I have always had the desire to buy and rebuild a 911. However, because of the Porsche mystic of being a high performance sports car I thought the reality of me performing the regular maintenance, not too mention rebuilding, on 1 911 was beyond my capabilities. After reading Mr. Dempsey's 101 Projects for your Porsche 911 I felt confident performing (and now do perform) all the maintenance on my car. I bought Mr. Dempsey's How to Rebuild and Modify Your Porsche 911 Engine 1965-1989 book hoping it would provide me with the same knowledge to take the next step in working on my car. Although I have not rebuilt my engine, Mr. Dempsey does not excellent job in describing the tear-down and rebuilding process which has help me gain a better understanding of how the 911 engine works. Furthermore, Mr. Dempsey's website, www.pelicanparts.com, provides a wealth of information to supplement his two books. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the 911 engine with a desire to perform more of their own work.

An incredible resource from an excellent teacher.
Wayne Dempsey may be the Harry Pellow (r.i.p.) of the 911 world, based on his warm and encouraging style of writing as well as his deep technical expertise.

Since his original "101 Projects" book, the author has improved quite a bit as a writer. The level of detail here is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and the style is very user friendly. Rare among technical manuals, you can read this book cover to cover in your favorite easy chair like a novel, or weight it open on your workbench as you follow each detailed instruction and example.

The photography is excellent and there's plenty of it. Close ups with good captions abound. Unlike some other well known 911 technical books, the photography actually supports and illustrates the text very well.

This book is not just for engine builders. If you're the sort of 911 owner that pays more attention to the tachometer than the stereo, and who understands that dry sump lubrication isn't when you run out of hair gel-YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!

Wrong years & outdated
I purchased this thinking it would work for my 90 Bronco, but it is for older engines. Beware of this book it is outdated for newer engines.

I am in the process of returning it, and boy is that a hassel in it's self.

Straight forward with a sense of humour; easy to understand
Be aware: this book does not cover the 360/390 Ford Engines (so I'm troubled that your title heading states:"covers all makes & models")...

This book is written at a very easy-to-follow pace.

Great Book!
This is a great book for anyone wishing to rebuild any of the engines this book covers.I used it years ago when I built my first 460.It is easy to read and understand.I would also recommend "THE STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ENGINE BLUEPRINTING" by Rick Voegelin.

How to Rebuild Your Nissan & Datsun OHC Engine

Great But Limited to Older Engines
This excellent book does NOT cover all Nissan overhead cam engines, only the now-ancient L types. Since the title addresses overhead cam engines and the current edition is 1998, I had hoped my 1989 GA16i overhead cam engine would be covered. It isn't. So, if you have a newer Nissan engine, buy this book anyway for the great advice and techniques but also get a separate shop manual for your engine. And I hope the author will update this book soon to cover the newer engines.

Excellent Photos and Info, required for any L-series owner
This book was of great assistance to me during the rebuild of my Datsun 240Z. The information was instrumental and helpful all along the way. Compared to the Haynes and Chilton manuals, this book presented pictures and words which matched and cohered to what I was doing on the motor at the time. Also the amount of illustrations and clarity were excellent, as a picture is worth a thousand words. Aside from the Nissan shop manual which you can't get your hands on I feel this is the best publication to have at your side during any Nissan rebuild.

Bring back the Z-car!

Excellent workshop companion
I have just used this text in addition to a factory manual and another third party publication. Whenever there was ambiguous or missing information in the other two texts Monroe's always came through. The clear photo's were a real bonus when the words were hard to understand. I found the torque specs. to be spot on and this was confirmed by the factory manual. I guess you have to know your ft/lbs from your Nm's. I did not have any trouble fitting the front cover as per Monroe's instructions and the head gasket suffered no damage. The rebuild was made much easier with this manual and I would have no hesitation recommending it.

How to Restore Your Farm Tractor
An excellent and interesting orientation as to what it would take to restore an old farm tractor. I found a lot of good b&w photos and a desciptive, easy to understand text. There are appendexes listing clubs and parts vendors also. Buy this book along with a shop manual before you buy a tractor.

BUY THE BOOK BEFORE YOU BUY THE TRACTOR
I READ OTHER READERS REVIEWS BEFORE I BOUGHT MY PROJECT TRACTOR AND THANK GOD. THIS IS A VERY GOOD INSIGHTFUL ACCOUNTING OF WHAT IT TAKES TO REBUILD A TRACTOR . FOR THE BIGINNER, THIS IS A MUST!

Buy this book before you buy a restoration project
This book is a good overview of tractor restoration. It follows the restoration of a Ford 9N tractor to original parade ready condition and a Farmall to working condition. It has chapters on each section of restoration such as electrical systems, fuel system etc. While it describes the steps involved in some detail for the two tractors being documented, it notes the exceptions for others such as John Deere. This book will give you a good feel for what tractor restoration is about and it will even give you some detailed instructions for some of the work involved, but it will not be the sole resource needed. Fortunately the author is well aware of that fact and gives generous references as to where more information can be found, not just other publications, but also societies and parts dealers.
This book is well written and well organized. It has a lot of good photographs, even if many of them are in black and white. I recommend it as a good starting point, but certainly not the last word.

Not very useful
This book is useful if you are your own handyman (as the author is) and want pointers on how to do things. Otherwise if you are going to hire your own contractor or handyman, it really is not very useful. For these investors, your money is better spent on a book that covers more in debt things you need to know about what kind of property to look for and how to determine a good buy and financing needed to secure it.

Fantastic renovation guide
Dworin is a clear, engaging writer. He presents the pros and cons of this business honestly. I read this large book in a few days and was eager to go out and start rehab-ing straight away. I would recommend this book for 1) anyone thinking of doing this as a business, 2) anyone contemplating remodeling their own home, or 3) anyone thinking of buying a home.

A lot of information for little money!
You know those ... get rich real estate books, videos and CDs that end up only giving you basic common sense information that you already knew (Like the last 45 minute video I watched the spent the whole time telling you to clean up the house before the potential buyer comes over. THIS BOOK IS NOT ONE OF THEM. This book is filled with tons of real, experienced info that you don't already know from common sense. 2 thumbs up!

The SL Experience: The Ultimate Mercedes-Benz SL Resource Book

5 Star Expectations
Sixty Five Dollars is a lot of money to spend on any book. My decision to buy this one was influenced by the many rave reviews and my desire to own the "Ultimate" SL resource book. Much of the book content was devoted to Gullwings and other collectables I couldn't afford to even think about. Medrcedes racing history also consumes many pages.

One real dissapointment is the propensity of the author to sell many pages to service providers for commercial advertising and much plugging for the SL market Letter - another commercial venture apparently produced by the author. My 3 star rating is a stretch. My copy is being returned to Amazon to be replaced by something a little less "ultimate".

Author's 20 year Love Affair Shows on Every page
Not a repair manual, and not a coffee table display, but just about everything else! This is Olson's third 100 page expansion of this subject; now 368 entertaining pages. Everything's here from why you should buy an SL in the first place to picking a good one, accessories that enhance their value, special insurance for SLs, restoration tips, four days at Bob Bonderant's high performance driving school, and what owners do with SLs to have fun besides merely driving to work. Concludes with comprehensive indexes on other collectible M-B books, art, service manuals, plus a "Who's Who" of ninty SL experts and how to contact them. For my money it's worth every cent. I've referred back to it a dozen times in six months.

Read This Book Before You Buy An SL of Any Vintage
Not only a nearly exhaustive review of SLs, from the Gullwing to the SL600, but a grab bag of useful information on MB art, books, clubs, toys, grand touring, and the like. Handy and beautifully crafted pull-out design appraisals by body type enhance the utility of the book. But the most compelling reason to include this book on your homework list before you buy an SL is for Olson's evaluation of the collectibility of each body type (and models within type) and the 8 factors that affect the value of a collectible car. While the book is a little skewed to the Gullwing and 300SL roadster, it's hard to argue with the author's obvious visceral appreciation of these works of automotive art, and the pictures and vignettes in the book are priceless.

A must have book, but room for improvement
This book certainly must be part of any boat design collection. Brewer covers all aspects of deisgn from hull to deck to power to storage space. It serves as a complete introductory resource covering the important aspects of each topic without burdenning the reader with details that the designers and builders must understand.

However, as an introductory book, it is missing some friendliness for the beginner. Brewer could improve on the technical definitions early in the book; in particular the description of prismatic coefficient left me seaching the web for a clearer definition. Brewer uses plan drawings to introduce hull shapes, but not teach the novice how to read such a drawing. Finally, some of Brewer's own designs are displayed; however, they lack detailed drawings and their minimal descriptions do not explain to the reader why the design was chosen or what tradeoffs were made, which would be particularly educational. Instead it just appears as a catalog of some plans Brewer hopes a reader might purchase.

All in all, I highly recommend this book, but hope the the next addition improves on this already valuable text.

Solid book for basics of boat design
I've have studied a fair number of books about design. This was the first I read and it's a good thing because it's not too hard to follow but it is definitely informative. It helps to understand design terminology and how a boat will perform based on its characteristics. I think I would have been frustrated had I begun somewhere else (such as Chapelle).

The focus is fairly broad. The designs are those most often seen on the water during the last 50 years (no brigatines, viking ships, or submarines). They are both power and sail, and both displacement and planing hulls. The size mostly seems to be boats of the "yacht" size (20 to 100 feet). Topics covered include styles of hull shape, line drawings, keels and rudders, layout, safety, construction materials.

This book will help you understand WHAT characteristics of a boat affect performance (and I don't just mean speed, because there is much more to it) and HOW they affect performance.

After reading and understanding this book, you will be able to better determine what to expect from a boat by just standing next to it and sizing it up. You will also figure out a few of the goofy things production companies do these days because they are focused on making boats that will be easy to sell, and not focused enough on making a boat that sails well. Make sense? Many modern designs have goofy characteristics that make a boat look good on paper and in an advertisement, but detract from performance, seaworthiness, reliability, and practicality when out on the water.

Bottom line: This book includes what I believe it should based on the title and the fact that it is ~150 pages long. It is very useful to someone want to own a boat, or get into boat design.

Not necessary, but earns its title.
This book is fantastic for the curious. Those who are unaccustomed to the language of boatbuilding will quickly get a grasp of the same in reading this book. It is short and easy to get through.

It is not one of those books I would say is necessary (like Chapman), but it is savory food for the curious mind.
