Scott Mueller's Ultimate A+ Certification Kit

EVERYTHING you NEED is in THIS KIT!
This kit COMPLETELY covers EVERYTHING you NEED to ace the A+ exam. It also includes an excellent PC Repair Manual and software with over 1000 practice questions. Most important, it offers you the KNOWLEDGE you need to get a great job OR to start your own PC business (or both). I plan to use it to teach a HIGH SCHOOL class in PC Repair starting Fall '00. My goal will be to have my students A+ certified by the end of the school year. For newbies, I would suggest 90 days of study for each of the 2 tests (this is the max amount of time allowed between tests). The tests cost approximately $100 each. I DO NOT recommend the DUMMIES series. My background: CSCI Instructor, Technology Coordinator, Technical Specialist, User Support Analyst.

WOW!! What an incredible package for a GREAT price!!!!
If you are at all interested in attaining your A+ professional designation this is the only set of books that you will need. Scott is one of the most knowledgeable PC hardware tech's in the world.

Excellent.
Hands down the most comprehensive set of A+ Certification prep tools available. Meyer's book fails on DOS/Windows. Jones and Landes could have done better. And both Gilster and Groth have a tendency to oversimplify. This is the only suite that will satisfy the knowledge hungry soul. But buyer beware...if you lack either ambition or aptitude, go with the books written by the previously mentioned authors. With "Ultimate...", Mueller, Brooks, and Berkel go beyond what is required to past the tests...they give you what is required to succeed outside in the real, working world. For those who demand only the most comprehensive of study tools, this is indeed the "Ultimate A+ Certification Kit".

Great for maintaining & servicing small B&S engines
This is a great reference for care and servicing of small B&S lawn mower engines. Contains countless photos with illustrations and some tables, but mostly a lot of color photos. Contains chapters entitled "Maintenance", "Basic Repair", and "Advanced Repair". "Maintenance" includes servicing spark plugs and air cleaners. "Basic Repair" includes troubleshooting, adjusting the carburetor, and replacing the rewind. "Advanced Repair" includes overhauling the carburetor, replacing the ignition, removing cylinder head carbon deposits, servicing the valves, and servicing the engine brake. The book does not cover overhauling the engine, but is a great reference for lawn mower owners who want to do their own maintenance.

Hindsight
My husband and I have cruised the Spanish-speaking Caribbean for years; unfortunately for us, all of those years were before Kathy wrote SPANISH FOR CRUISERS. We muddled along then, but next time we'll have this wonderful book with us. In fact, it will be our security blanket. It covers every possible boat repair; and I suspect it will turn a potential emergency into something commonplace.

Spanish for Cruisers
I met the author of Spanish for Cruisers while I was sailing the Caribbean earlier this year and got a copy of this great book to take with me when I sail on to Venezuela, Columbia and Panama. After looking it over, I can highly recommend it.

Spanish for Cruisers provides all the essential boating, hardware and mechanical vocabulary and phrases that is impossible to find in any other single source. The book is divided into 25 sections, such as Materials, Hardware, Electrical, Talking to Mechanics, Refrigeration, Sails and Tools. There are also sections on basic conversation, pronunciation and asking for directions. The format is well laid out with many diagrams, a complete index , an extended back reference cover that can be used as a bookmark and a soft plastic spiral binding which allows the book to lay flat. Cruising is often defined as "doing boat maintenance in exotic places". If you're planning to sail to Spanish speaking countries of South America and the Caribbean, this book by Kathy Parsons will make the inevitable boat maintenance part of your cruise much less frustrating.

Recommendation from a Venezuelan Spanish teacher and Cruiser
There's a lot to say about this very well put-together book "Spanish for Cruisers". It's a handy pocket translator for boaters who need to make repairs in a Spanish-speaking country. Whether you are sailing Mexico, Central or South America, or Spain, the attention to regional differences in vocabulary will let the boater quickly bridge the language barrier.

Spanish for Cruisers allows students to get quick results from their efforts and I will be using it in my classes as well as recommending it to boaters who are learning Spanish on their own. Its practical techniques give the English-speaking boater the ability to arrange boating repairs, carry on conversations and communicate information needed in emergencies. Spanish for Cruisers provides boaters with the most important verbs that they will need for everyday conversation using strategies that eliminate the need to master difficult conjugations. Another asset is that phonetics (pronunciation) is provided for every word and phrase. This allows students to start communicating quickly without a teacher.

Spanish for Cruisers makes communication easy, fun and rewarding and I recommend it highly.

In 1933 Alister MacKenzie put on paper his considerable golfing knowledge. One of the game's most revered course designers--he conceived Augusta National, site of the Masters, and served the hallowed links of St. Andrews for years as consulting architect--MacKenzie synthesized his thoughts on golf's history, its equipment, its personalities, and his musings on what makes a great course and what makes a great hole, into a manuscript that lay hidden for more than 60 years. Finally available, it stands as one of the most courtly and cultivated treatises ever written on the royal and ancient game. His concepts of the psychology of design are as apt today as when he penned them, and his anecdotal spinnings on his own golfing trials should inspire anyone who's thought of picking up a club.

Legendary Architect on Sundry Golf Issues
Lost manuscript now publlished for all of us to hear the thoughts of such an influential figure in our sport's history. Bob Jones wrote of him in the preface: "all his courses that I have played have been interesting; in every instance he has placed interest and enjoyment ahead of difficulty."

Oh, that more modern designers would learn the lesson! He states that even the most emphatic golfer who says he's not interested in beauty is "subconsciously influenced by his surroundings." Easily the designer of some of golf's most influential hole scenes, this guy gives definite hints, e.g. Playing down fairways bordered by straight lines of trees is not only unartistic but makes tedious and uninteresting golf. Many green committees ruin one's handiwork by planting trees like rows of soldiers along the borders of the fairways."

Love the poem he quotes on the analysis of paralysis: The Centipede was happy quite until a toad in fun said "Pray which leg goes over which?" This put his mind in such a pitch he lay distracted in a ditch considering how to run."

Buy it and read it now
Great read and great sketches. When asked how he got such interesting, hilly, contoured greens, Dr. M once said, "Employ the biggest fool in the village and instruct him to make the greens all flat"

Scary how much of the comments written in the early part of the century apply to today's game and course design. Once section about the controversy of the day re: limiting the flight of the ball is exaclt what we are hearing nearly again 70 years later

Course Architecture and Maintenance
MacKenzie shares his timeless, and oft forgotten, philosophy on how a course should be designed - for the golfer, but not by the golfer; shaped and, when necessary reworked, by the professional architect, not by the whims of a committee; and finally, playable by all who love the game.

An absolute classic...
If you know me, you'll know that I'm a software guy. Specifically, I'm a software developer. I don't want to build my own PC. I want to turn it on and have it work. When it doesn't work right, I start to get really nervous. I hate to open up the case and look inside any of my PCs. And I can't tell you how many times I've seriously hosed my machine by attempting to install a new piece of hardware or memory. Bottom line... I don't like hardware.

So why am I reviewing a book on PC hardware? Because fear is no excuse for not understanding the device that allows me to make my living. Having worked a little with this book, I can honestly say that I would have saved myself a lot of grief if I knew about this book earlier. It is amazing.

Scott Mueller covers everything you can think of that you'll find in your PC. He also includes both the "what is" and "how to" details of the devices. For instance, you can read the chapters on magnetic storage and hard disk storage to understand how a hard drive works. He then takes you from the theoretical knowledge to the practical information on how to install a new hard drive in your PC. When I had to install a hard drive about a year ago after a drive failure, I truly had no clue as to what I was doing. While I was successful, it was an extremely stressful experience. If I had been able to review these chapters beforehand, I could have actually learned from the process instead of running scared through the ordeal.

In this 15th anniversary edition, there is also a DVD with two hours of video related to the book. I haven't had the time yet to review the DVD material, but I have no doubt that it will be of the same high quality as the book.

Conclusion
You need to have this book if you ever plan on replacing or fixing anything on your PC. I wish I had known about this book sooner... You don't see many tech books that get past their first edition, much less the 15th edition. This is a classic.

Includes more than 100 pages of new material
This 15th Anniversary edition of Scott Muller's Upgrading And Repairing PCs includes more than 100 pages of new material, covering the latest in motherboard and processing technologies. There are reasons why Scott Mueller is a bestselling PC hardware author whose "how to" manual for dedicated, do-it-yourself computer users has been a standard and a staple of personal and professional computer repair/upgrade reference collections! An accompanying DVD includes more than two hours of high quality video playable on both standalone DVD player and DVD-ROM. 1608 pages. User Level: All Users

It just gets better each time.
Ever heard the saying "It gets better with time", this could be the phrase to describe the 15th edition of one the best compture technician manuals ont he market today. Scott Mueller has released the latest edtion of Upgrading and Repairing Pcs and this is the best one so far.

I have using theses books since the 9th edition and each time the new book is released I find even more information and always find the book(s) to up to date and techincally accurate. I am teaching a class in A+ and this is certianly a reference to have handy for the students.

There is over 1500 pages covering it all, from Motherboards, CPUs and memory to storage, networking and troubleshooting and just aout everything in between. Mueller has become a highly repsected and trusted author and this book bears out his great technical abilities. Anyone in the technical field needs to have this book as part of thier library.

The techincal details, from pinouts to slot pin breakdown is nothing short of amazing and the amount of information is simply incredible. There is information in this book that I have not found anywhere else.

While this book is not written to any single certification exam, you will find that it is tailored to the A+ or CST exams. The book includes a DVD with 2 hours of video clips to learn from. The only thing I found was that if you don't own a DVD player you have top go tot he website to download the clips, I think a CD should be included for those without DVDs.

Overall this is simply a must have for any and all field and depot technicians. Those working a Help Desk shouldhave a copy at the right hand. Mueller has simply outdone all other editions.

Foreword by Robert Pirsig?
Habermas' answer to ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE, this work is likely to redefine the meaning of praxis for social theorists.

Top this.
I have only read to page 1042 so I do not yet know how it ends, but regardless, Pensky has rendered a limpid translation of Habermas's "Volkswagen Quantum Official Factory Repair Manual: 1982-1988, Gasoline and Turbo Diesel, Including Wagon and Syncro." This is one of those translations that appears to speak more profoundly than the original, and with the expanded appendix, the full color map, and the inclusion of new chapters on both "Wagons and Syncros" this text will spend more time on my nightstand than on the shelf.

A turbo-charged, cross-disciplinary tour-de-force!
A long-awaited application of the theory of communicative action to issues of automobile maintenance. While I haven't read the book myself, I certainly plan to assign it in all of my upcoming courses on the mechanics of the public sphere.

From a beginner's viewpoint
I had already started my restoration, when I ordered Runabout Renovation. It helped assure me that what I had done so far was OK, and gave many good pointers for later processes. Jim Anderson speaks in a frank manner, is quite thorough, and takes things in a logical progression without jumping around topic-wise. I'd love to see an updated and/or expanded edition with even more content dedicated to some of the fine folks on the web. A must have for your bookshelf if you're going to restore that old boat!

Great Book!
I bought this book through references from a group of restorers on the internet. I was very pleased! This book takes you all the way through repairing and restoring an old runabout, from finding the right boat to final touch ups. I would call it mandatory if you're looking to restore an old fiberglass runabout.

Just like the title says.
This book goes through the basics in an intellingent and easy to read manner. I read it in two days, I couldn't put it down. If you want to purchase and renovate a late 1960s, early 1970s speed boat, BUY THIS BOOK. It spoke to me!

Excellent book - worth twice the price
I've been wiring cars and motorcycles for 30 years. I also work with microcontrollers and supporting circuity and electronics in general. Somebody suggested that I get into boat electrics and maybe I could help support my cruising kitty (when the time comes) by working on other peoples sailboats. It seemed like a good idea, so I set out learning what I could and to gain some experience. The first thing I did was to buy every book I could lay my hands on on boat wiring and read them from cover to cover. Now that I've wired and repaired a few sailboats I realized that out of all the books I have, only two were refered to continuously while the rest have collected dust. This book is one of them.

First of all, it is a very easy book to read. There is not a wasted word in the whole book. All concepts are concise and easily understood. When you need a diagram to grok a concept, it is there. You can sit down and read this book like a novel it's written so well.

Second, it leaves no assumptions. Sure, I'd like to think I know all things electrical, but I don't. Sailboat electrics is as different from automotive electrics as cake is from pie. I learned about the difference between marine and automotive batteries. I learned about corrosion and zincs. I picked up the concept of sailboat characteristics in a lightning strike. These are the categories that are not covered in automotive books or even in general Electrical Engineering courses.

I think this book should be every boaters first choice in sailboat electrics. I recommend it to everyone who has an interest. If you feel you need even more detail, or equipment-specific knowledge, you can always pick up (my 2nd must-have book choice): Boatowner's Mechanical & Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems.

Between the two, you will have on hand a reference to everything you will need to know.

Outstanding book
An outstanding book. I myself knew absolutely nothing about electricity when I first bought this book - although obviously it didn't make me an expert, it nonetheless taught me what I needed to know to start modifying my boat's electrical systems. I admit that I am biased - Don Casey is one of my favorite sailing authors - but if you are a novice and need to upgrade your boat's electrics, this is the book to get.

elegant
I have a twenty-five boat with modest electrical needs. This book gave me all the foundational material I needed to start and finish my project but more importantly presented the material in a very readable even entertaining fasion while remaining efficient. Great diagrams, great book, great sailing.

Review from an ameture
Very thorough, gives instructions on all types of repairs and tells you when you shouldn't attempt the repair as an ameture. Useful for sounding smart to service pros too. My only complaint is that it could use a better index. You might consider checking out a chilton's book as a cross reference, it might explin some things better, though it wont give you the depth and volume.

Never touched my 82 rabbit until now
I have been curious about automotive repair since I own a rabbit with 303,000 miles and counting. I needed to replace the rear struts and wheel bearings, glow plugs, lights, and oil pump. The book covers all areas well with very good details and drawings. However, for the glow plugs it says something stupid as "it's like changing a spark plug" and that was it. No it's not. It's pure hell. You have to remove the injector lines and hoses and the first 2 injectors to have some work space and replace the heat shields on the first 2 injectors when putting it back. Other that I have really enjoyed this book.

From novice to greasy novice
I picked up my copy of Volkswagen Rabbitt/Jetta Diesel Service Manual Including Pickup Truck and Turbo-Diesel 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 used in an Albuquerque, New Mexico junkyard. I knew little more than how to put gas in, but since my purchase I have replaced or repaired the radiator, brake servo vacuum pump, hoses, window cranks and battery. All I needed to make the car run great was the parts and this book. Perfect for those brave souls willing to get grease under their nails.
