The Awesome Trail bikes by Shane Harvel
The Trail Bikes is a really good book.If you are looking for a
dirt bike,or if your looking for how to ride one this is the
place for you go to.Believe me this is the place for you to
go to.GOOD LOOK

Good solid stuff.
Eric Gorr's book is a great help to all dirtbike owners. In addition to your bikes workshop manual it should cover absolutely EVERYTHING you will ever need to do to your bike.

The writing is good, it's organized and to the point. There are specific sections for all the major models.
This is one of the better tecnical books I own, and I highly recommend it.

Buy This Book!
If you're a motorcycle enthusiast and you like to work on your own bike, this is the book to have! It tells you just about anything you may ever have wanted to know about working on your bike and more importantly, how to set it up properly. It goes through everything step by step, but not in a dummies fashion. The writing is straightforward, entertaining and best of all fact filled. I would call this the bible of dirtbikes. Now that I have it, I don't leave home without it.

By the way, I don't know the author, I just bought the book because a professional mechanic I met on the trail told me about it.

Surveying Fiberglass Sailboats: A Step-By-Step Guide for Buyers and Owners

Do it yourself or learning the ropes
I used this and another, more detailed book, to complete my own survey on an inexpensive boat with a measure of confidence. I felt that I could gauge the safety and useability of all the major systems of the boat within reason..is it safe, does it work properly, etc.

I didn't always understand the why behind some analyses, but the average person can easily use the book to a) perform a basic survey on an inexpensive boat, or b) winnow the acceptable from the unaccptable before paying a professional to complete a thorough survey.

Must have Book for those looking to buy a boat
Read this book and you can evaluate boats and surveyors. This in turn will make you feel more comfortable when you hire a surveyor to meet an insurance requirement or to evaluate things you don't feel competent to do yourself.

This book does a great job explaining how glass is laid up, the different types of glass, mat, roving, etc, and where they should be used. Common problems found in fiberglass boats such as blistering are discussed with lots of surprising information.

I've found that my personal experiences confirmed many of the points made by the author. Like the myth that fresh water boats are better than salt water. Contrasted with fresh water boats are more likely to have blister problems than saltwater.

Today, many people come to me with questions about boats. As I write this review, I realize that many of the answers I give out come out of information I found in this book.

I don't believe you have to have a survey on a boat to make an intelligent purchase decision. In part, because some of the surveyors are only interested in your money, and do not look boats over thoroughly. A properly educated individual can do most or all of his, or her, own survey.

Some surveyors are very good, and some are very bad. How can you tell if someone is good or not?

To become a surveyor some certifying organizations only require a couple of sample copies of surveys done and that you have a few books on your bookshelf. What a joke!

I personally know of a real case, which happened in 1999, where an old survey was pulled up, the date changed and it was reused without any a new survey being actually done. This is a good reason to choose your own surveyor and not the one recommended by the seller.

Going aloft and checking the rigging on a boat is not easy. Is it not surprising that important steps like these get skipped.

Some surveyor's haven't read this book--so how good can they be? Contrast this with someone who has taken a 8 week course on surveying, holds a USCG license, and grew up on boats. This is the kind of person you want for a surveyor.

It is up to you to be knowledgeable enough to make your own decisions-including choosing a surveyor if you feel you need one. This book will help you do that.

Educate yourself. Being able to look a boat over to evaluate it for purchase is an important skill. This book is a good starting point. It is cheap insurance and worth the price.

I feel prepared
Henry does it in one 3 1/2 hour setting - completely. I now feel confident in my search for 'Das Boot'. I drove a 27 foot Tartan for years, decided it was time for a 40 and didn't know how to proceed in my next move. Now I do. Well written, factual and even mentions, not-unfavorably, some names. I do not believe you could go wrong with this purchase, if, you are on the same quest as I. Retirement, with dive charters in the Caribbe... Buenas Suertes, y'all.

Then Why Does it Still Hurt? A Book About HMO's, Managed Care, Medical Malpractice and You

Good warnings but . . .
OK the descriptions of the various ways that your doctor, HMO, or hospital can harm you are very well presented. However, potential readers should know that he rants and raves throughout the book continually implying that the health-care industry is only a group of greedy, uncaring people. The book takes a purely political swing in the last chapter where jumps into a promotion of very liberal universal health care coverage (a very different subject) as if this will solve all of our problems - ". . . all people in this country would share one level of medical care. No one would get an inferior level of care because he had no money . . ." Give me a break! None of the universal care countries have achieved this utopia. Karl Marx was wrong - equality does not create happiness. Productivity creates happiness.

Every health care consumer needs to read this book
I found this book useful and fascinating. Because I had recruited older Americans to lobby at the state legislture level in more than 35 states and taught them about health care issues, I had always judged myself to be a fairly well informed about the health care industry and about being a consumer of health care. But I now know that was wrong. I knew too little. Schroeder's book accurately portrays the facts about America's health care system and how to be a better customer/patient.

Scribes World Reviews
The writer, Jack Schroder, alerts the public to the fact that HMOs are controlled by insurance companies...he sets forth vivid scenarios describing how malpractice can occur because of HMOs...he provides detailed advice and cautions as well as hard cold fact, and he's easy to read and understand.

They Will Help
These tapes will help you pass the A+ exam. But be aware that there is some wrong information on the tapes. An example is the Dos boot sequence. So don't make this your only guide. The "Dummies" book is good except for the Dos section, and the original Exam Cram book can be very helpful.

First rate job!
First there was the Exam Prep and your excuse was the book was to thick to read. Then the Exam Cram came out and the excuse was this was not enough information. Then we have the Exam Cram Flash Cards and there weren't enough questions. Now there is the Exam Cram Audio Book and there is no more excuses left.

What this 4-tape collection gives you is the perfect add-on to the Coriolis line of training material on the A+ Certification. Alone these tapes will not give you enough information to pass, so you will need more reference material to study from.

What these tapes do give you is a great traveling companion, a last minute brush up and in my case some information that was completely touch on in the other Coriolis books. The tapes cover every objective of the exam and the 4th tape in a review and questions tape.

I think that Coriolis has really got something here and if they expand this series to the exam prep books they would have another sure-fire winner. This set of tapes costs $39.99 and this is a small price in comparison to what you gain from passing the exam. Thanks again Coriolis!

The perfect supplement
Use whatever books you want to prepare for the A+ exam, then get these tapes. You'll find that it's much easier to listen to Craig Landes drone on about IRQs and vector tables after a hard day's work than it is to hit the books. ;-) These tapes are basically an abridged version of the A+ Exam Cram, which is precisely what you should be studying a few weeks before you take the exam. I only wish they made MCSE tapes....

Fix Your Own PC

Do you have the urge to take the casing off your Windows-based PC and tinker around, but you're a little intimidated? If so, get this book first. The text is clear and well-indexed, and this book will give you the information, and then, confidence, that you need. (It would also be a great book for anyone who wants to help recycle old computers for schools or non-profits). Two Torx blades up!
Average review score:

It worked for me!
This book as is good as it's title: I did manage to fix my own (Pentium II) PC by reading it! It gave me the knowledge to find the problem (a bad motherboard) and the courage to replace it. Operations that at first glance looked intimidating, were made relatively simple by the book's clear discussions, explanations and photos. It's range covers the inner workings of old PC's up through the Pentium II (as well as a little bit of info on the Pentium III.) Not a perfect book, though: the photo printing could be better; and the section on power supplies isn't complete or accurate, particularly when it comes to ATX-type supplies--oddly, the type found in most Pentium machines, for which the book is otherwise a good repair guide. (The power supply is a vital component in a PC, and is oftentimes the first gizmo to go bad.) I had to go outside the book to find that critical info. But criticism aside, I wouldn't have been able to repair my computer without this book, period, so I would recommend it. Perhaps a newer edition will correct the minor shortcomings.

An Extremely Helpful, Informative Book
This book covers everything you need to repair, maintain or upgrade a personal computer. The text covers legacy and more recent hardware. It's informative and is enhanced with plenty of photos and charts to make computer repair/upgrading easier for both veteran and novice. I built my computer using this book. The appendices include trouble-shooting flow charts, lists of companies selling what you need and lists of valuable software utilities available, amoung other items. It even covers all you need to know about peripherals. In the four months since I've purchased it, it's proven to be an invailuable reference.

If you buy this book, your life will be better!!
Forget Bigelow and Mueller...'and all of the others too! The master has re-appeared! Corey Sandler is one of the greatest writers of our time and he knows not only how to write a great book, but he also knows how to help the reader obtain the maximum benefit from his books. This is his FIFTH Edition of the book entitled 'Fix your own PC' and I got it as soon as I possibly could as I was curious to know if he had covered everything I could possibly want to know about as regards PCs and peripherals...'I wasn't dissapointed! His previous edition of this book was marred by publisher's type-errors and badly drawn diagrams in the fault-finding charts, BUT...'this has all been sorted out in this latest edition. Not only that, but the book is 'complete' as it really does cover every aspect of the modern PC with just the correct balance struck between this and references to what he calls the 'dinosaurs'. This is probably the only book available at this present moment in time which actually covers every state-of-the-art component of the PC as he gives us a great coverage here of every processor up to date, including the Pentium II and the most recent Cyrix and AMD equivalents. He has included much new material like the use of Universal Serial Bus and the many peripherals you would connect to this interface. Scanners, printers, DVD and every concieveable device all get a meaty mention in this excellent book. Corey Sandler has a way with words, in that he knows how to teach you a seemingly complicated subject in a very easy way. This is a remarkable achievement in itself as there are not too many people who have this ability to communicate a subject effectively to a reader...'Corey Sandler has no problem with this most important of tasks! This book is not merely a re-run of the previous editions with the odd update...'it is a major work on the modern PC and should be on every PC enthusiast's bookshelf as it covers just about everything you could ever wish to know about your PC and related equipment. Whether you are a novice, a student, a home PC owner/user or an experienced engineer, you will find something of value in this book for you! As I said at the top of this review, "If you buy this book, your life will be better!!" Maybe that should have been the name of the book for this book will definetely enhance your knowledge of PCs and the world of PC technology in general. You can take this book and use it as a text-book for college, or you can use it as your 'blueprint' for building your own PC and/or diagnosing and repairing every kind of fault you will ever be likely to encounter. After giving this book a thorough going-over and comparing it with the competition (or rather, the lack of competition!), I can safely say that this is a book I can recommend 100 percent to anyone who is looking to learn more about this subjet. Corey, I thank you for putting so much time and effort into producing such a fine book as this FIFTH dition...'it's all that I expected from you..'and more! (Reviewed by George Blades).

Useful, but don't expect this book to make you an expert
I own a 1997 Ford Aspire and recently got this book. So far I have not used it much, though it has helped me with some simple procedures like changing the air filter. However, while flipping through parts of this manual I have found that it is definately useful to have a basic knowledge of automobile mechanics in order to correctly complete some of the procedures.

As a person who has learned most of what I know about working on cars by taking something apart on a lazy day, I don't have some of the experience that I think this book assumes the reader has. For example, the section on repacking the wheel bearings confused me within the first few steps. I definately recommend reading through an entire procedure and making sure you understand it all before getting started, to avoid getting into trouble.

The only gripe I have, which is fairly minor, is the ten-year coverage contained in the book, resulting in plenty of pictures with captions like "Typical engine compartment components".

All in all, I think this is a useful book to have, though extremely amateur mechanics like myself may get confused by the lack of very detailed step-by-step instructions.

Haynes Festiva/Aspire Manual
Haynes offers the only currently available non-factory printed repair service manuals in existence for the Ford Festiva.A good reference manual to help someone maintain their own car. Many of the procedures are accompanied by pictures and given explanations that sometimes are more extensive than the factory Ford shop manuals. Think of the Haynes manual as a supplement to the factory manuals, not a replacement. Upon reading, it will be clear the information is geared to the "shadetree mechanic". The Haynes manual covers the North American Ford Festiva from 1988 to 1993 and the Ford Aspire from 1994-97. With such broadbased coverage, you can expect some information not included in this book. For example, step by step transaxle overhaul, you will not find in the Haynes manual. Typical of Haynes, some generalization also applies with respect to certain diagnosis symptoms, which may or may not be attributed to the Festiva/Aspire coverage. Also, there is lots of pictorial emphasis on the Aspire which Festiva owners might find frustrating. In fact, some info can be misleading if not care is taken to differentiate between the two cars. Still, this manual has too much valuable data to pass up. A definite must-have for the Festiva owner.

A comprehensive look at the Festiva
This book is a goldmine of information about the Ford Festiva. There are many simple fixes, tips and tricks which can save you hundreds if not thousands in repair shop costs by doing it on your own. It is well organized and contains enough information to keep your Festy running like a charm. If you own a Festiva, this book is the best investment in the vehicle you will ever make.

Enthusiast Shop Manual
What complete service manual does not have electrical schematics? I'll tell you! This one! If you intend to work on this car, buy the Haynes manual.

A Miata owner from Barbados says....
A well written, clear and concise book with plenty of pictures to help you do what you want to do to the car. It covers everything from all of the standard distance / time maintenance jobs that should be done, through to the more complicated in a language that makes it easy for the novice and the expert.

I bought this book over a year ago and still use it every time I go to do something to the car! If you want to do jobs your self, and need a bit of help, get this book!

Forget Haynes...
This is the best car maintenance/shop book I've ever seen. Probably the best feature is that Rod tells you how to do things with simple tools, or even how to come up with makeshift tools, including how to improvise a homemade torque wrench for tight spaces, etc. This is a true "shadetree mechanic" type book.

Modern Engine Tuning
Published in Hardcover by Haynes Publishing (December, 1997)
Author: A. Graham Bell
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

Good book, but not gospel
While there is a lot of good info in this book, I think the author is somewhat liberal in what he considers "fact". While it's an easy read and well presented, I wouldn't take everything for complete truth.

Not bad..
Certainly covered all the basics of combustion engines and introduced some key formulas to remember. It's a little European car centered, but engine basics are the same. It is a little dated now, first printing was in '88, so many newer technologies and recent advancements are not touched upon at all. Still an excellent resource.

Modern Engine Tuning
one of the great book about simple engine performace tuning, a truly handbook for amateur car engine modificator.

Almost, but not quite
I had high expectations of this book from reading the reviews. Yet, I found that alot of it did not apply to my situation. I own a 19 foot runabout for lake use only, and alot of the information in this book was specifically for larger off-shore boats. Still, some of the informaton will be useful I'm sure. I guess I was hoping for more technical maintenance stuff. If you own a large cuddy or deisel powered boat, this may be for you.

go to work
gives very easy and cheap ways to clean & go

This book helped me save big bucks!
This book is filled with excellent tips that helped me throw away many of my expensive boat cleaners and replace them with cheaper, less caustic, yet equally thorough cleaning substitutes. Plus, my boat cleaning chores go quicker now. This book has paid for itself several times over. And I haven't even touched on the excellent engine maintenance tips it contains...
