Studying for the exam is easoer.
It cost $256.00 to take both A+ exams and even more for the study materials. You could invest a small fortune into getting the certification. New Riders A+ Certification Version 1.1 is more than the typical software application and at a cost that may bring a smile to your face.

First thing I noticed was the $50.00 coupon on the A+ exam and that pays for the software. Secondly was the over 1000 questions included in the package and this gives you an incredible advantage in passing the exam.

The manual install is a small inconvienence considering what you get in return. Course summary for both exams, reading assignments on every objective, practice exercises, study and flash cards and practice exams. All this for under $60.00 you may find this value hard to beat.

The cd-rom comes with on-line tutorials to aide in the study process and the information does cover each objective with great detail and from what I saw they were very accurate and complete. New Riders has put together the A+ certification package and now you have a new friend in the A+ Arena.

The practice exams make all the difference
I only used the practice exams on the CD but found them dead on as far as giving me an indication of how I would score on the exam. Many of the questions are the same ones you will get on the exam!

Fine A+ Certification Prep Tool
I must admit, this was the last product I bought to prepare for the exams. I had already reviewed from other materials and have extensive work experience so by the time I got this, I just browsed through it in case there was something I may have missed. It is fine if this is one of the first study materials because it is certainly not going to be the only one.

A+ Exam Cram Personal Trainer

First, the good news on the A+ Exam Cram Personal Trainer: You won't find a better software testing program out there at this price. If you're looking for a good, accurate, and brutal way to test your skills before the main exam, the questions here are well-written--and the post-test analysis is as good as it gets. The bad news is that if you're hoping to learn the A+ from the training software, you may well be in for a disappointment.

But let's hit the highlights first, shall we?

The testing software is as close as it gets to sitting down in that tiny room at Sylvan and choosing answers; the only thing missing is the sweaty guy next to you, muttering nervously as he fails. The questions are extremely well written, and about what you can expect to see on the exam. The precise writing neatly avoids the usual pitfalls that plague bad testing software--you won't find any nebulous "could be this, could be that" questions, no major technological gaffes, no mislabeled answers where the correct "answer" differs from the choices actually given to you.

The topics tested are broad enough to challenge your knowledge of software and hardware at the A+ level without descending into minutiae. There are about a dozen unaccountably softball questions ("What kind of device is a mouse?"), and one or two bizarre ones that seem to have emigrated here from another test ("What does the specification for 60-pound bond paper mean?"), but generally they're solid. The only major qualm about the questions is that there are no Exhibit questions--and given that motherboard diagrams show up on the A+ with astounding frequency, this could punch a grade-draining hole straight through your knowledge.

The testing software covers almost all the bases, running the gamut from four fixed-length tests to the more brutal (and thankfully, close-to-extinct) adaptive exams. One problem is that although the range of tests is varied, there is no way to split your testing into Core exams and DOS/Windows--take an adaptive or a random exam, and you get both at once.

The post-game analysis is extremely strong; a lot of testing software gives you a grade and perhaps a slim paragraph of explanation, and that's it. A+ Personal Trainer allows you to check your answers item by item using an interface that's a dream, gives verbose and comprehensive explanations to your questions, and allows you to save your scores. And--in a move that's a sure shot to attract corporations looking for mass training--it's all user- and password-based, so several people can use this software at once.

You may note that so far there's been no mention of the personal training software. That's because basically it's a book onscreen with some minor hyperlinking capability and the occasional multimedia shot. The "training" consists of clicking through many screens filled with writing that is taken in part from the bundled A+ Exam Cram book. There are few illustrations--and when you're trying to sort out the various types of cards, sockets, and DB connectors for the exam you need illustrations--and aside from brief bursts of audio that replay what's on screen, there is little of value here--it's like reading a well-formatted Word document. And as stated, the hyperlinking is sporadic; you'll only find hotlinks in the table of contents, not the actual content itself. While there're some nice features (the ability to print screens and put personalized notes wherever you want them), it's not nearly as easy to get through as a book.

Fortunately, the bundled book is fairly decent. While not quite up to the stellar heights of most Exam Crams, the A+ Exam Cram is sufficient to get you started and through the crown jewel in CompTIA's certification collection. Most Crams are noted for their brief, to-the-point writing, only concerned with the facts necessary to pass the exam; this one diverges needlessly, dwelling on dead technology to tell you how current technology came to be as well as how it currently works. While this approach can work in certain books, it's a drawback here. But the writing is lively enough, and you'll get the ideas quite nicely from it. The only truly glaring error is that the DOS and Windows chapters are unaccountably huge; it's a bit of a bummer to slog your way through a 50-page chapter on 16-bit Windows, only to get a measly five test questions at the end of it. These could have been divided into smaller sections on, say, memory management and computer bootstrapping.

In short, this is a great piece of testing software backed with a lot of content. You could certainly pass the exam with what you find here, but it might be easier to find a good book and use this as a truly kick-butt supplement. --William Steinmetz

Great testing software - other parts could be better
The testing software in this package is great - I used it extensively after studying for my A+ exams to help me realize where I needed more work. The test engine generates a variety of adaptive or regular tests and includes information about the difficulty of the questions and the areas you missed when you get your score. It also allows you to review each wrong answer and it provides a paragraph or so on why th answer was wrong or right.

The rest of the software was basically an online version of the Exam Cram book. I thought the book was fine, but I used Meyers' All-in-One A+ certification Exam Guide instead. I thought the material was much better, the illustrations were mor helpful, and it better covered the material for the two exams. I don't think an exam cram book can effectively cover all the material for both exams - maybe one, but not both.

EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!
Did I mention that this book is excellent? Before I read this book, I was somewhat knowledgable on computers. Now that I have completed it, I took both the Core and DOS/Windows and scored high 600 (adaptive). I could not have made that score without this book. This book answered so many questions I had. Even if you are not going for A+ Certification, I would highly recommend this book to ANYONE who wants to know what makes a computer "tick". The CD is nice, although the questions on the practice test seem a bit outdated. 4 stars for the CD

THE RIGHT STUFF!
The book + test software? Exellent!

Only second best
to the world of Phelsuma is this book. Though generally very helpful and nice, some of the info (especially latin names) is not up to date, some species are missing (Phelsuma Pronki, Phelsuma Masohoala etc.) due to their recent discovery. If you are able of reading german, I can only advise you to get a copy of the amazing book:

Faszinierende Taggeckos - Gattung Phelsuma Authors: Hallmann/Krueger/Trautmann

This is the bible of Phelsuma friends.

Contains tons of info on Phelsuma
Though not the most up to date piece of literature on keeping day geckos (genus Phelsuma), this book is well worth buying if you're interested in keeping them. It's the best Phelsuma book in the English language. In its pages, readers will find all the information they need on proper housing, feeding, and breeding techniques of Phelsuma in captivity. Details on how both retailers and private reptile keepers can manage their animals abound. Mckeown writes in a scientific format that is enjoyable and different from the usual dry writings found in many of the textbooks relating to the care of reptiles in captivity. At the same time, Mckeown does not write in the lame manner that so many authors of cheap reptile books do these days.

Dispite the fact that it's older than many of the other day gecko books available, this book is easily the best. It's well written, organized, and enjoyable. The photographs are great and the author's writing style is superb. A must-have in any reptile enthusiast's library.

A great book for day gecko owners
McKeown's book is loaded with so much useful and important information that it could easily be considered the Phelsuma owner's bible. Every detail of day gecko husbandary is covered in this book, and it has a large number of beautiful photos illustrating almost every day geckos species known, with a few exceptions. If you are thinking of buying a day gecko or two, I highly recommend this book.

All does not read well that starts well and ends well
Starts off very well with the hope that it will get more technical but instead becomes more theoretical in areas such as aesthetics and fine art, areas which the author seems to not have a background in. ie, his discussion of perception, symmetry and balance etc. If you can skip the middle chapters its not bad but again I had hoped for more technical insights. Perhaps I needed a book on golf course construction. I just assumed from architecture courses that construction issues and recommendations as well as more detail of layout relative to game play would be discussed.

Amazing!
This is one of five best technical books I ever found. As a beginner in golf course design, I found in this book all I needed to realize my projects.

Fascinating,
This is a fascinating book for any golf enthusiast or historian, as well as an essential practical resource for anyone actively involved in golf course design, construction and maintenance.

The design process progresses from the green to the individual hole to the entire course. Detailed technical information is well integrated with aesthetic and theoretical concepts making the entire book interesting & readable.

The book is packed with color photos of individual holes to illustrate design concepts, sites under construction and wonderful historical documents. The technical drawings & plans are well done and very useful.

This book is a great example of making a technical manual a joy to read. Any golfer who appreciates the background of the course he or she is playing on will love it.

Great book - just doesn't cover Z24 as much as L-series
I liked this book simply because it's gonna answer many questions and give much help to anyone with a 70's or '80's z-car or truck. I have a 720 pickup with the Z24 motor. It is in the list, however it is not touched upon as much as the L-series inline 6 and 4 cylinders.

Excellent for your street aplications.
This book is great for the serious do-it-yourselfer. If you know how rebuild your engine, you'll have no problems. It gives recommendations from the experts and simplifies it for you, and eliminates the hassle and expense of experimenting. Get it, it's an excellent reference if you're already in the business.

Modifying your Datsun OHC engine -- an excellent guide!
My friend has this book, and I've looked it over a few times. It is an excellent guide, a must for the performance engine builder! It shows everything from heads, how to weld them, straighten them, even port and polish them, to bottom end work such as balancing, which rods to use, what pistons you should use for a particular application, even shows how to use a welder and a milling machine to match the top of the piston to the combustion chamber for high compression! If you want to performance-build your Datsun/Nissan engine, this is the book for you!

dont try and rebuild it youself
i purchased the book and it is indeed a wealth of information. however the jigs and tooling you need to do a complete tranny rebuild properly will cost you way more than you would ever save trying to rebuild it yourself. its just not worth it . hell i had a reputable shop pull mine rebuild it put it back in replaced the mounts cooler lines and facory torque converter and they gave me a 2 yr waranty on it for less than $...
hell im an aircraft mechanic and didnt want to attempt the rebuild on my #s matching tranny. Its like Clint Eastwood says "a mans gotta know his limitations.".

How to Work With and Modify the Turbo Hydramatic 400 Transmi
Lots of good detail and easy to understand information for the experienced mechanic, even if you've never rebuilt an automatic transmission.

So far the best source for info...
Wonderful. I read this book cover to cover. I've never tackled a transmission, and the subject has always intimidated me. I knew the general theory, but after reading this book I feel confident to rebuild my own TH400. At least if I have trouble I'll know where to look and how to communicate the problems to someone else now!

Ann Lovejoy's Organic Garden Design School : A Guide for Creating Your Own Beautiful, Easy-Care Garden

West Coast gardening guru Ann Lovejoy has gained a significant following, and deservedly so--she's a gifted teacher, a lyrical writer, and a passionate advocate of organic solutions to even the most daunting garden problems. Her Organic Garden Design School is meant for readers who still consider themselves students, but who are serious enough to "move beyond the beginner stage." A 36-page workbook concludes this glossy, lavishly illustrated volume. Workbook assignments include "Drawing a Map," "Testing Soil," and "Minding Your Mulch."

As a designer of gardens that are faithful to the natural world and don't require too much pruning or artificial control, Lovejoy invents her own terms. Her style resembles English gardening, except she warns against the nostalgic impulse many gardeners fall into, determined to create gardens from another era or another country. Lovejoy's an advocate of "gardening where you live," not forcing a dream of another place onto the landscape. She emphasizes native plants, designing around slopes or flaws, working with shade or sunlight as they appear. Perhaps most instructive are her "five senses" of the garden: the sense of welcome, enclosure, and entry, flow, and place. "Rather than physical attributes," she writes, "these are more subtle aspects that give each garden its own flavor and character." --Emily White

Poorly organized but good information
Since I'm currently resolved to redesign my yard in the interests of increasing its ecological value and decreasing required maintenance, this "organic garden design school" SEEMED like the perfect book for me. And there is a lot of good information in here, about design considerations, planting tips, etc, some of which I've found nowhere else, and which have made the book worthwhile to me. HOWEVER, winnowing that information from the book was not very easy. Though the title suggests this is a textbook, it is really a long series of 1- or 2-page rambles about one or another aspect of the author's experience gardening her own yard (and one other yard). This work is poorly edited and organized, and there is a huge emphasis on just those two examples of garden design. To apply the lessons of this book myself, I needed more than anecdotes from two situations unlike my own. I needed some generally stated design principles, as well as some very specific techniques (e.g. how to build raised beds like the author's). While this information is in there, and some of it is quite illuminating, those gems occur nearly randomly within the 1- or 2-page rambles. If the book was titled something like "Design Thoughts," perhaps I wouldn't be so disappointed, but a "school" and a "guide," with all the clarity those words suggest, this book is not. A workbook section at the end of the book makes up for this by finally providing the reader with a definite guide for action. But it would have been a much more of a "school" and a "guide" if the workbook had been integrated into the chapters, rather than tacked on at the end.

Ann Lovejoy's Organic Garden School
This book changed my life! In a nutshell, I was focusing on perennials and color; after reading her book, I got into foliage and structure. I used to buy bushes and "hope" they wouldn't get too big, but her philosophy is to buy the right bush in the first place. I guess I just needed someone to tellme that! I have been gardening for about 15 years, and have read many books, but this is the first that actually made me do things differently! I love Ann's passion for gardening. I love this book!

clearly written
I have enjoyed using this book as a good reference for my growing garden. Lovejoy's style is clear, she provides some worksheets in the back of the book, which I found helpful. I also noted her 'voice' in the book is not haughty or stuffy - she is friendly, and clear, which as an avid reader of garden books, I found refreshing. Her ideas are both simple and logical. I love this book.

A Chrysler Chronicle : One Man's Story of Restoring a Classic 1948 New Yorker

hoping for more
I received the book and have read it cover to cover. It is an interesting read, and more so for me since I just bought an identical car. I have to say that I was hoping for a little more detail and analysis of options on the specific car. For example, since the title says restore, I thought that there might be some discussion / sources / charts of the original options, colors, fabrics, etc. I think repair, repaint and reupholster is more accurate than restore.

The book is longer on the author's personal story than of the car. Given his NASA background I had also hoped for a more technical diescussion.

The book is not large or long and cost [money]. If you were to pick it up at a swap meet [for less money] would be the high side of what you might pay.

I'm happy to have the book, I was just hoping for more for the $.

Excellent read for all classic car enthusiasts!
I gave out 2 copies of this book as a gift and kept one for myself. As an owner of a 1947 Chrysler, I can say this book reflects all the joy and pain I had in restoring my own vehicle.

Very well written, many details to help others in planning and executing their own restoration, not only for a Chrysler, but other makes as well.

Well done Dave Floyd! Keep Goliath rolling!

Something for EVERYONE!
"A Chrysler Chronicle" offers tons of laughs, tears, and a variety of insight. This story is an inspiration for folks of ALL ages and interests. We're anxiously awaiting the next one, Dave Floyd!

BIG Disappoinment
I lost all enthusiasm for this expansive tome when I cracked it open and realized that it was geared toward the basic user. The author does a good job of explaining how a particular piece of hardware works and even how to physically attach that piece of hardware to the system, but stops there. Absent are the in-depth troubleshooting or compatibility suggestions that one would expect out of a book this large. Far from "complete", I found as much information in a 1988 copy of Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" and my owner's manuals/instructions. The CD was also sorely disappointing. Every program on the CD is either shareware or a limited-use trial version. After shelling out $ for the book, I would have rather had one legitimate program than 7 different registry editors that I have to fool around with before purchasing. Finally, the section on making the ultimate PC was a joke. To summarize, buy all the parts, assemble, and if it doesn't work, check all your connections. This book is for beginners only.

Excellent resource material
I'm a huge fan of Minasi's books, see my review for his latest 12th ed. I Can't recommend this book enough to the novice and advanced.

I love this book!!!!
After a year of learning on my own reading "...for Dummies" books, I went looking for more advanced books. All I found was area spacific books( IT, graphics, alt-OS) until this one.

This book had everything I wanted. Defined all the terms I wanted to know and gave me tips I could really use. Since reading this book I've built two computers, I have never had to call a tech line or call my personal computer guru. I'm fixing friends computers. I owe it mainly to this book. I have only one problem with the book and that is the CD's...it's not that they're not informative, it's just that they're dated. The guy talks about a few thing that haven't been used in 4-5 years.

Why are you still reading? BUY IT!!!!

Black & White Sheets!
it's a book and a magazine in the same time, it's good I admit it and it's helpful but the problem is the sheets in black and white kind of hard to recognise pictures and car colors.

So...

I suggest to buy this book as an addition to LowrideR collection, go ahead.

Great Diagrams for hyrdos
I found this book to be very good on explaining how exactly a lowrider works as well as how to set up a hyrdulic system on a car. This book has the best diagrams of complete systems i have ever seen. It also has some good basic information on other topics as well. I have to say though this is the best book you can buy if your going to start to build a lowrider this is the place to start.

One of the books you will need when starting in the lowrider
