It's ok, but more of a story than a how-to
This book is about adjusting your electric guitar to play well - and is divided into 8 steps, starting at the head, and ending with the bridge.

Let me say what I liked and disliked about this book...

***What I liked about the book:

It's a good reference to have if you just bought your first electric guitar and want to become more acquainted with its components. He goes over how to adjust the neck (truss rod adjustment and bolt-on neck adjustment), adjusting the bridge, filing down the nut, and so on. Keep in mind that he doesn't cover aftermarket modifications to make your guitar sound or play better - this book is all about making an adjustment here and there (ie, tightening, loosening, filing, lubricating, cleaning etc.) to optimize the guitar's playability and sound.

***What I disliked about the book:

He has a storytelling approach to writing his books... Basically the book is a story about how he set up a few of his and other people's guitars, as opposed to having a list of things to do and describing each one separately. Some people may like this approach, but I personally found it to be rather cumbersome, because my eyes would glaze over while waiting for him to get through so many unnecessary/run-on details. Run-ons are not cool. Wow, are we having great weather today or what!

Finally, to point out a possible book error - when he talks about how he installed a Bigsby Vibrato on a Les Paul...he complains about the Vibrato not fitting right, but it's probably not fitting right because the model he is using is not meant to be put on a Les Paul :p... He is using the one made for SGs, not the one made for Les Pauls, for which they have a different model.

Great Book
This is a great book to learn how to properly setup your guitar. I've only been playing for a couple months, but after installing some strings that claimed to be 9s (but I don't think were) and having them yank my bridge about 3/4" out of the body of the guitar I figured I oughta learn how to properly deal with that (other than just switching strings...)

The book takes you through many common problems, fixes, and general setup/maintenance for Strats and Les Pauls (as well as their clones and various other rarer guitars).

Much of the book is a narative form, describing particular tough setups for various guitars. Some have complained about this, but I've found there's enough info in there to find what you want. Plus there are more step-by-step setup instructions towards the end.

The book got my bridge fixed up nicely, as well as my action set more properly, so the guitar's easier to play and sounds better as well.

Great for beginners!!!
This book takes a somewhat indepth look at setting up your electric guitar, but when it gets too complicated, he tells you to go to a pro. As far as getting a good setup on your guitar, this is the book to have. Covers many types of bridges, pickups, and nuts, and shows tools you can make, instead of buying. After studying this book, I set up my cheap Harmony strat style axe to play better than I ever thought it would. Great Book!!!

Great book
I recently purchased a home and wasn't sure where to begin if something went wrong. This book does a great job of explaining the inner-workings of a home and demistifies how it works. I can now tackle any task around the house thanks to Lou.

He does a great job of explaining in simple terms how each facet of a home works. A must read for any homeowner.

He is also a great guy. I've had the opportunity to talk to Lou via email about some problems I was having with my house. He was extremely gracious and intelligent in his response. You won't be dissapointed if you buy this book.

Look out home now I know how you work!
I have a new friend in the home building and renovating business. Having this book is like having a relative that can answer all of the questions I have about repairing and renovating my home. Upgrading and Repairing Networks (2nd Edition)

Though he didn't do the writing himself, Scott Mueller's involvement in Upgrading and Repairing Networks is evident in the thoroughness of the book's coverage and the quality with which documentation has been written and compiled. Like Mueller's highly respected books on personal computer hardware, this book treats its subject in great depth, acknowledging that information about older technologies is valuable to the significant numbers of people who still run those technologies. Pretty much every local area network (LAN) technology from the past 15 years--as well as the most popular internetworking technologies and the emerging wireless networking protocols--are documented here. Author Terry Ogletree explains how the technologies work in order to help you figure out where to turn when they're misbehaving. One difference between this book and the PC hardware book: this one is much less hardware-centric, focusing instead on software, protocols, and network services.

Ogletree relies heavily on text, and takes time to explain everything from the histories of various protocols to Microsoft's design goals for Active Directory in Windows 2000 networks. Reading his text is rewarding, particularly if you have an appropriately networked system nearby with which you can investigate the features he points out. Operating system coverage is broad--Unix, Linux, NetWare, and Windows are all covered in turn--though most generic sections (such as those having to do with protocols) use Windows NT or Windows 2000 in their examples. --David Wall

Topics covered: The state of the art in local and wide area networking technology (emphasis on LANs), and the older technologies that led us here. Physical network design, protocols, operating systems, and services all get attention.

Average review score:

The collaborative effort of computer network experts
Now in a fully updated and expanded fourth edition, Upgrading And Repairing Networks is the collaborative effort of computer network experts Scott Mueller and Terry Ogletree and specifically designed for users of all experience levels. Readers will swiftly learn the basics of network repair and the networking world. Included are real world, in-depth, accessible explanations of how the protocols, architectures and hardware used in a network operate and how to repair them when they don't. Upgrading and Repairing Networks starts with the fundamentals and methodically works through more advanced concepts. An accompanying CD contains a wealth of troubleshooting tools, including a virtual library of networking and PC troubleshooting and repair books from Que Publishing.

4th edition is another great release!
Anyone in networking needs to keep up to date with the changes in technologies and doing this requires constant reading of the latest material. Trying to keep up could very well be a full time job, so thank goodness that Terry Olgetree is around to make it a little easier for all of us.

Having had the opportunity to read the 2nd and 3rd editions, this 4th edition is a continuation of the outstanding work Olgetree is and has done. The books get better with each edition; in fact this is a perfect companion for several networking certifications.

In 1200 plus pages, you are taken from the history of networking right up to migration. Olgetree starts you with hardware and works to security applications. You are working with Windows, UNIX, Linux and Netware, so everyone is involved.

From the opening of the book; which has a very good subnetting chart, to the closing, which has Ethernet information, this book takes apart the network and helps you put it back together. Form the LANs and WANs to IP and IPX, you have protocols and the information is up to date and technically accurate.

The book does covers troubleshooting in a how to and why it happens and what to do manner, which I found to very helpful. In fact I was able to learn a few new tricks along the way.

Overall this is one of the best network reference manuals to have around, in the next edition there could be a cd-rom with a few networking utilities.

Great Networking Knowledge
This book holds quite a bit of knowledge about networking. It is very thorough and includes all you could ever want to know. The reading is more technical because of the kind of book it is. Explanations of topics are very simplistic and you are able to understand. The organization of the book is excellent and provides links to other chapters in the book covering topics mentioned in more detail. Great book for a networking enthusiast.

A+ Certification Study System

A+ Certification Study System presents a unified guide and test demonstration CD-ROM for the A+ certification core exam and the DOS/Windows test.

The text covers all elements of each exam, beginning with processors, memory, and other hardware subsystems before progressing through troubleshooting techniques and the fundamentals of MS-DOS and Windows 95.

Though each chapter concludes with some useful practice questions, this book tends to fail with its sample hardware photographs. They're dark and amateurish, and it's rarely clear what you're supposed to notice--a picture of a whole motherboard labeled "ZIF socket" isn't helpful, and neither is a picture of PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports misidentified as USB ports.

The CD-ROM contains a program called Beachfront Quizzer, which simulates the format of the A+ exams neatly and does a good job of tracking your answers. It's integrated with the text too. When a Quizzer user requests help with a question, the program brings up a quick answer, plus a hyperlinked reference to the relevant chapter of the book text on the disc. It would be better if the hyperlinks led to specific sections of the text rather than requiring the test taker to scroll through a whole chapter.

By the way, the codes you need to unlock Quizzer appear in the "ReadMe First.txt" file in the CD-ROM's BFQUIZ folder. IDG Books should have made this more obvious. --David Wall

Boring and cd errors
the way this book was written is terrible and cant keep my attention for more than 10 seconds, the CD has many many errors on it.

Good Book
This book definately helped me pass the A+ exams but there were several questions that I found were not covered in the book. I would definately recomend using a second source just to make sure you pass!

Great Book
I got a lot out of this book. I passed both the hardware and the software portion of the A+ exam the first time.

Minutia, minutia, minutia
Seeing as my computer blew up(the power supply), quite literally, I was in need of a definitive book for repairing my computer and replacing such fried parts as my motherboard, power supply, processor, etc. I went to Scott Mueller for help. To say this book was kind of unhelpful would be like saying a PI is kind of slow - if you catch my drift. When it comes to going into mind-numbing detail over useless minutia, I've got to hand it to Scott Mueller. When it comes to providing relevant information, pictures, illustrations, and tips that might actually be of use, however, he does not quite fit the bill, so to speak. He's downright Terrible(caps intended). Try Michael Meyers and his A+ book instead - much better.

The Best
1632 pages of Hardware. Hardware ladies and germs. Not software but all hardware. I love it. I own it. And I buy it everyother edition (10th, 12th, 14th, etc.). This is the best book I've read yet and I've read 99% of them all. The only repair book I haven't read is Stephen Bigelow's but I do have high hopes for it but it can't compare to this dynasty.
Unlike other reviews, I would not recommend this book for the beginner though. It's to big and to indepth for a FNG. You need to see the forest before you can study the roots of the trees. I've always loved "Enhanced A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining you PC" even though most people won't recommend it. Buy a cheap used version.

Outstading!! Down to earth and as comprehensive as possible
If your new to computers, then this is the only book to buy! I decided that it would be most beneficail to buld my own system, and since, while using computers i was quite familiar with, i had never built my own system, i decided to pick up this book for a reference handbook. Its amazing! I've learned a substantial amount and feel confident with building my computer having this book on hand. But, since pc's are evolvging at such an alarming pace, i suggest to put down the extra monay and purchase the most current edition, you wont be disapointed!

An OK Overview
Pass on the hype.....this book is a soft general overview. However it lacks on technical details. It focuses mainly in two areas, 883 coversion and history. Again the 883 conversion IS NOT TECHNICALLY DEEP and I would even venture to say lacking. I was disapointed in this book. Not recommended.

A guide how to tune your 883 (and 1200?)
Great book to get your mind on sensible tuning your Sportster. The book describes all possible good and not so good ways to tune the engine, but is mainly focussed on tuning the 883 and converting an 883 to an 1200.
If you allready own a 1200 you might be looking for information which is not available in this book.
Still a valuable piece in your library.

Great HD Performane FAQ Manual
I used Buzz's book, with the factory manual, to turn my '93 883 into a perfectly running 1200. Other than the cyl. bore, I did all the work myself with absolutely no problems.

Compare this with Black & Decker's repair book before buying
I read these reviews and decided to check out Better Homes and Gardens home repair book. The first thing that struck me were all the water color illustrations that reminded me of some cheap school book from the 1950's. I need to change the garbage disposal beneath a friend's sink and decided to look up the procedure in this book. Hey guess what? There WEREN'T ANY procedures for changing a garbage disposal! In fact, there was not the first mention of garbage disposals in this entire book. It seems to me to be a very basic household appliance that a lot of people may need to install or replace. I then looked in the Black and Decker home repair book and found several pages devoted entirely to installing a garbage disposal with many COLOR PICTURES. This was enough for me to decide against the Better Homes repair book. I still haven't bought the Black and Decker book and may not, but it is far and away the better of these two books. Also, the index in the Better Homes book was very lacking in many different subjects/topics. Stanley also publishes a terrific home repair book that you might want to consider. Bottom line before you buy one of these books, make sure you do some comparisons between these home repair books using examples of projects you might want to tackle. The reviewers who gave this Better Homes book 5 stars must work for Better Homes and Gardens because this book cetainly is NOT worth the money!

Great How to Book
600 pages and covers just about any home repair or improvement from hanging a door to retiling a kitchen. The drawings are comprehensive and well executed. There's a fine index and the instructions are step by step.

A feature that I really like is the "You'll need" which gives the Skill level, time and tools needed to complete each task.

This is the best of the home repair books I reviewed before purchasing.

Excellent reference for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.
This book is one of the most complete and accurate references I have seen. There are a few minor omissions, as well as some editorial errors, but I found this book to be enjoyable reading and an invaluable resource for the inexperienced homeowner. The scope of the book is broad so it is a bit general in some areas, but it will still replace many other books in most libraries. I highly recommend it to anyone who feels intimidated by the thought of buying a less-than-perfect home.

Not what I had expected!!
After reading the reviews on Amazon and other sources I got the impression that Mr. Probst's book was "THE BOOK" to read for modification of the EEC-IV system on my Ford Truck.

I was very disappointed. 95% of the book was nothing more than a SIMPLIFIED discription of each component in the Ford and Mazda engine control system. Mr. Probst very strongly implied that people should not modify their engine control system.

I found Mr. Jeff Hartman's book "Fuel Injection: Installation, Performance Tuning, Modification" much more informative for technical information.

Good technical info
This book is an excellent source of info on Ford engine control. I recommend this book for anyone who works of Ford vehicles. The only section of the book that disappointed me was the performance modification section. The chapter explains why you should or should not install certain mods. It basically tells you to put in a turbo or supercharger. It does not give any technical info or instructions to performance modify your engine. More modification info can be found in any car enthusiast magazine at your local newstand. Otherwise this book is excellent. I recommend they change the subtitle to "How to Understand and Service," not modify, your EFI engine.

Hats off to Mr Probst !!!
This book is topps! Mr Probst uses a friendly, easy to read format. I am now plagued with two problems on my truck, and thanks to this book, I understand quite a bit more. I am a do it yourselfer, self taught, and this book brings things to light. This has given me the tecnical data I need, as where other books are unclear or leave you hanging. This is not a book by any means, it's an investment.
Raise my rent, put another shrimp on the barbie mate, and thank God for simplicity!!

How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine

An amateur act
Having just recently finished rebuilding a 1200 engine, my experience with Wilson's book was frustrating. Not only are key details about the 1200 engine omitted but issues such as compression ration/deck height are poorly explained and the uninformed reader is left to guess. This is fatal when considering the composition of modern, lead replacement fuels which require a lower compression ratio. Other important issues not covered are - how to get the timing right when inserting distributor gear shaft (which should be done after crankcase assembly), lubrication details (using white grease for assembly as he recommends clogs oil galleries), checking bearing crush for big end bearings, as well as adjusting rocker arm geometry. Having said all this this happens to be the only book which deals with rebuilding in this depth, so it is useful but think for yourself! Another important aspect is the cost of a rebuild and the number of hours required - expect to spend thousands of dollars and hundred of hours of time. Although the book claims to make rebuilding easy, without the proper machinery and tools rebuilding is time consuming, costly and annoying. Expect to either buy or borrow specialised tools such as large sockets, micrometers, depth gauges, etc and to pay for machining work such as regrinding values, crank, etc. Rebuilding can end up being merely a reassembly task of work completed by a machine shop.

Professional Grade Advice
Tom Wilson's book brings the mystique of engine rebuilding down to a level that your average backyard mechanic can understand. It is as easy to use as John Muir's book when is comes to rebuilding a VW engine. It does not take hundreds of hours to do nor does it take thousand of dollars. Rebuild kits with cylinders, pistons, etc are relatively cheap and, if these parts are servicable, a gasket kit and rings will be well under a hundred dollars. I rebuilt my engine for about three hundred dollars and it runs like a charm. It took one week to do part time; about twenty hours. Little in the way of specialized equipment is needed. Machining, if needed, is usually minimal and not costly. I only have the usual range of socket wrenches and stuff and no specialized equipment. Muir's book even tells you how to make inexpensive substitutes that work excedingly well. Wilson's book cuts to the chase and tells yo what you need to know. If you have an average level of mechanical ability you can do this.

Great Engine Rebuilding Book
If you are planning on rebuilding your VW or Porsche 914 engine, or are even just curious about what's involved, then this is the book for you. The book is broken down into several excellent sections: engine removal, teardown, parts interchange, reconditioning, assembly, and burnin. Detailed B&W photos document every step involved. This is by far one of the best how-to books out there, and is almost all you need to rebuild your engine (factory manuals would help to supplement the book too).... it's a great buy, and definitely worth purchasing even if you're not going to rebuild your motor, but want to know what's involved, or why your mechanic is charging you so much. I'm currently writing a similar book on rebuilding the Porsche 911 engine, and I'm modeling it after this one.

Don't Leave The Dock Without it
With this book aboard plus Peter Compton's "Marine Diesel Engines" and your engine manual you can cruise with an easy mind. The first two books explain all aspects of diesel function as well as define any problem you may have, with diagrams, explanations, and tips to cope. Calder also has photographs. The engine manual shows you how this relates to your particular engine.

Get to know YOUR engine !!
As a new boatowner knowing next to nothing about engines this book has helped me identify key parts of my own engine and explain what their functions are. The book provides clear troubleshooting procedures (hope I will not need those since I intend to follow the suggested maintenance procedures instead) and information on how to diagnose different symptoms.

The book is covering basic engine parts, more in depth explanations of engine parts, fuel system, how to troubleshoot start problems, diagnosing different sounds and symptoms, maintenance and repair procedures (probably more than most of us will want to perform ourselves - like opening up cylinders and decarbonizing the engine). I especially liked the chapter about engine selection and installation which discussed various aspects of hull, engine, exhaust and transmission fittings.

Illustrations are good and applicable accross engine brands. Warning: The book kept me awake several nights because I had to check things the very next day after reading a chapter.
