Great for handyman pool owners, not just those in the trade
I'm not in the pool maintenance trade but I've owned and maintained a pool, built two fish ponds and am currently having a pool, spa and koi pond built. Being an engineer by education, I was thirsting for in-depth information and wasn't disappointed. My pool plaster will be black and I was especially interested in Tamminen's very detailed opinions on the controversial topic of pool start-up after plastering and how to avoid mottling from plaster dust (a BIG problem with colored plaster.) But there's a wealth of other tips as well. For instance, I'm installing a sand filter, despite claims that it can't filter particles as small as those trapped by a DE filter, based on the comparative information in this book. A sand filter promises relatively low maintenance and my dark bottom doesn't require the same high clarity as a white plaster pool.

I might have liked more info on the hazards of installing rocks in the water on a notched bond beam, under-edge fiber optic pool lights and ways to hide pool tiles. But those would more appropriately be in a book dedicated to pool design and construction rather than pool maintenance. Also, the discussion of fish pond design and maintenance was a bit too rudimentary to be of much value, although, like the rest of the book, the author wasn't shy about stating his opinions strongly. I liked that.

All in all, this is a treasure trove of very practical information that should really prove its worth after my pool is completed....

Almost perfect... alomost
This is a great book that explains the "whys" as well as the hows". Lets face it... what's the point playing around with water chemitry if you have no idea what is behind all the effects.

Why almost perfect??? It has no information on the benefits of a salt water pool/chlorinator. The more I've read elswhere, this seems to be a great way to go and I would have like to additional info on it in this book.

excellent for the do-it-yourself and save pool owner
I have purchased 4 books in search of practical reference for pool maintenance. This book is outstanding. In this genuine book the author offers a comprensive introduction and reference based on experience and intuition. It is well written and easy to understand.

Realy very elementary!
I was hoping for a book that would have some neat ideas on making my Harley zippier. Of the 101 projects, stuff like changing the oil and adjusting the clutch just don't do it for me. But then I have taken Harleys apart and put them back together. The factory manual is your first must have book.

GREAT ACCENT TO YOUR FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL
FINALLY A BOOK THAT TAKES OUT ALOT OF THE GUESS WORK THE FACTORY MANUAL LEAVE'S US WITH. GREAT SHORT CUTS AND TIPS TO GET THE JOB OR UPGRADE DONE FAST AND RIGHT. THIS BOOK IS WELL WRITTEN IN LAYMENS TERMS, FULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH GREAT COLOR AND CLOSE UPS. KIP TELL'S YOU THINGS THE FACTORY "FORGETS" TO TELL YOU. IF YOU LIKE TO WORK ON YOUR HARLEY AS PART OF THE PLEASURE, IT WILL BE A GREAT PLEASURE TO READ THIS BOOK. THANKS KIP, GREAT JOB

Full color pictures illustrate projects extremely well
This is the one book to buy if you want to start spinning wrenches on your Evo Harley. The book is very up-to date--even recommending using a Twin Cam oil filter for Softails for screening out finer particles. The section on de-federalizing your CV carb is worth the price of the book alone; as is the advice for a "five-quart" oil change. The book is very easily understood with its color photographs on every single page. I only wish there were more of them, since some of the projects could use greater specifc detail.

Excellent For Determining Scantlings On Traditional Boats
It is always a pleasure to get comments from readers, but I'm afraid that Rick Burner is a mite confused. The Elements Of Boat Strength was specifically written to make it not only possible to determine the scantlings for any boat (from a coasting schooner to a skiff) but to make the calculations required relatively easy. For some reason, Rick's review indicates that Boat Strength doesn't provide you with the information needed calculate the scantlings for traditional boats such as those in books by, say, Howard Chapelle or John Gardner. In fact, Boat Strength provides exactly this information. What's more, you can not only calculate the scantlings for the original construction method but for any modern variant and/or for any other material, from FRP to aluminum.

Most Complete and Easy to Use Reference On Boat Structures
Elements of Boat Strengh is the most comprehensive and easy to use collection of rules for figuring the size and strength of all type of boats I've seen. It covers almost every boatbuilding material, traditional and modern. The chapters explaining the use of specific materials and methods are worth the cost alone. This is a must read for anyone interested in boats. Highly recommended.

Great reference and not a bad read either.
Well orginized and written. The title says the rest.

Handguns and Freedom : ...their care and maintenance

Common sense gun talk
Finally, a book with a reasoned regard for the second amendment. Joe Pierre fills this slim volume with an encyclopedia of experience and practical information on handguns. Mr. Pierre not only provides photos and detailed descriptions in clear, conversational language, he makes a persistently logical and appealing argument for responsible gun ownership. For years, my husband has urged me to carry a handgun and to keep guns in our home 'for protection.' For years, I acquiesced but with the fear that I would be harmed by my own weapon. If ignorance is at the heart of fear, then Joe Pierre has taken me lightyears into the arena of comfort with gun ownership, for myself and for any responsible owner. I stress responsible, as does Mr. Pierre. He repeatedly, but with engaging wit and illustrations, emphasizes the obligations of safety and care in handling a personal weapon. I found this book to be surprisingly convincing in its informative and personable dialogue with the reader. It is also a magnificent reference to the Bill of Rights, and an inspiring motive to citizenship. There should be a place for this tiny little text, packed with common sense, clear explanations, and great humor, in the social studies curriculum of all high school students. It offers a worthy sanctuary of readable, useful, and objective information against shifting politics and unreliable media content that forms so much of our cultural backdrop.

Valuable shared first hand experience
Unlike a number of purely academic works where the author becomes preoccupied with a narrow slice of dry legal or statistical support for gun ownership, Joe Pierre provides a positive professional, technical and cultural overview of firearms use and ownership. There are chapters that define the dynamics of the current gun ownership debate, there are also very practical passages covering firearm selection, pros and cons of various designs, right to self defense, Constitutional assurances, and even basic firearm maintenance.

While the book draws heavily on the author's personal experience and exposures, there is a good deal of reference material that I found enlightening, such as Senator Thomas Dodd's interpretation and subsequent use, of the Nazi Weapons Law as his basis for the Gun Control Act of 1968. Joe Pierre did a great job of offering a life time accumulation of firearm related knowledge in a form that could be shared by the rest of us. A valuable effort on the part of the author and greatly appreciated.

Is it legal to review your own book?

This is the latest of three books that I have authored, in addition to several that I have edited, designed and illustrated, and a few more that I have assisted with. I think it represents my best effort to date. As the title suggests, it is about handguns and freedom, their care and maintenance.

Handguns and Freedom is about the care and maintenance of firearms, as well as their selection (by type and caliber) for various purposes and shooters. It also addresses the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which is the only amendment in the Bill of Rights that addresses only one issue: the right of a free people to own and carry the means to self-defense against predatory criminals who threaten their lives and property, and against an overweening government bent on tyranny or the establishment of a dictatorship.

The book contains 75 illustration, including 16 professionally executed editorial cartoons, a couple of sketches and the rest photographs illustrating the text.

Many of the points brought forth in the book are also available in other books, and so are not new but are worth saying again, and others will be new to you, perhaps. In any case, it is my hope that you will enjoy this presentation, and that you will come away from it a better, safer shooter, with greater confidence and with a renewed interest in the subject.

For those with little or no background or experience with hand held firearms, this is a good place to start.

Where were the tractors?
I enjoy reading Mr. Welsch's tractor books, often laughing out loud (and driving my wife crazy). I enjoyed the anecdotes about friends and females, but missed the tractor stories. Maybe it has all been done? I think not. The problems overcome and the lessons learned in "Old Men . . ." and "Busted Tractors . . ." were rich in both amusement and (some) educational value. This book, unfortunately, left me empty at the end. Funny stories, but a little too much on the "Love and Sex" part; and yet, in some ways, not enough. Read it, enjoy it, but don't expect as much as his first two tractor books.

Love, Sex and Tractors
I have all of Rogers Books and each one gets better. Love, sex and Tractors was by far the the best. He continues to keep the reader laughing. It is the most thought provoking and informational book I have read in a long time. The only thing that would improve his books would be to paint his tractor pitured on the cover green with yellow wheels.

If Rog only wrote that book 30 years ago
When I started reading the book, only few moment passed before laughed so the bed was shaking. Couldn't help shouting YES! several times. Tried to tell her what was so right and so funny. All I got was The Look and The Sigh. She don't understand why there's this 3 ton pice of metal where she could park her car. This book should be mandatory for all male above the age of 13. If you don't understand the woman in your life get Roger's book - period.

Describes pre-construction wiring
Buyers who expect this book to describe wiring for completed homes are in for a rude surpise. This book details wiring for a home under **construction**. But the other details like photographs and description are excellent.

Advanced Home Wiring
I purchased this book at the same time that I purchased Black and Decker's THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HOME WIRING, thinking that it would take me to the next level and provide me with additional information. In a nutshell it was merely an abridged version of the aforementioned book and added NO NEW information. It was easy to read, and easy to follow, but omitted some of the basic background information that their other book included. I think the novice home electrician could get by with either book, although I give the nod to the COMPLETE GUIDE..... as a more helpful and a more thorough instruction and reference book.

Second 1/2 of the new one
Published in 1992, a follow up to the Basic Wiring and Electrical Repairs book put out also by Black & Decker, this book has great photos and easy to understand explanations covering how to do more complicated electrical tasks. While the first book was repair and maintenance, this book moves into renovation and remodeling, with chapters on project planning, tools & techniques, Wiring a Room Addition, Wiring a Remodeled Kitchen, Installing Outdoor Wiring. From this book I learned how to install new breakers in the main fuse panel, a project I was terrified of trying. This really is a very good book for the non-professional. Now the two books are combined in the 2001 The Complete Guide to Home Wiring by Black & Decker

Valuable Benchmarks
To me, the book's value was that it showed me how to measure the effect (usefulness) of my operations using benchmarks. I learned I didn't need more RAM. I could speed up my CPU. My disk drive was actually performing faster than I thought. I used to the tips in the modem chapter to speed up my dial up throughput by 14% percent (works for me).

Buses now make sense!
I had been struggling with trying to understand the differences between PCI, VESA, IDE, SCSI and firewire ... when to use which for what ... how to use each.

The book's bus chapter is worth the price of the book alone! Not only do I now know what each bus does, how to tell if my PC has the bus, I also know how the buses communicate with one another.

According to the book and the benchmarks I ran after reading the book, incorrect bus use can severely impact performance. Fortunately, fixing the bus problems is easy.

Faster Printing
I have a HP LaserJet printer with a network card. I took the book's advice and connected my pc (via a hub) to the printer using a network (100Mbs). I print a lot of large graphics. They seem to print 20 to 30% faster using the network connection.

Automotive Handbook

Too small
All I can state for now is that the book is INCREDIBLY rough on my eyes. The pages are extremely thin (showing text from the other side of the page) and the text is very very small. If I could get this in a readable font size on quality paper, I would be ecstatic.

I have a feeling I will end up selling this. I simply cannot stare at it for more than 30 seconds without my eyes crossing. What a shame.

Excellent theory but not practical
Although the size of this book is a little bit bigger than a pocket book, it has 892 pages full of all the theories and calculation you might want to know about an automobile. It even includes information and formulas on trigonometrics, electrical engineering, physics, etc. so the reader can refer to them as they read the book (since the book includes calculations on different parts of an automobile). If you want to know about how components of an automobile are designed or just want to know how complex an automobile really is, this is the book. But if you want a book that tells you how to troubleshoot different components of an automobile, you need to find different books. This book is full of theories, not practicalities.

Very good reference book
Very technical, factual and dry - bordering on boring. Contains a LOT of information, on most aspects of the automotive industry. Very usefull and comprehensive, but does not cover any system with great details - this book is somewhere between a bird's eye view and a detailed explanation. Bias towards Bosch's products, especially current products, is apparent at some points. This is not a beginner's book.

Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance

Lennard Zinn is a cycling god. Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance is revered as a bible among the fat-tire set; he now extends the gospel to the rest of the cycling faithful in Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance.

From simple, routine maintenance to more complicated tasks, Zinn remains "convinced that anyone with an opposable thumb can perform any repair on a bike." He begins with "Basic Stuff" such as pre-ride inspections and cleaning the drive train, and continues on through the super-advanced task of wheel building--arguing that "the construction of a good set of bicycle wheels is actually a straightforward task." Zinn guides readers step by step through every possible repair on every possible part, handlebar grips to Maric Mektronic electronic shifting, with plain-speaking text and helpful illustrations. There's even a section on emergency repairs, including unexpected advice such as straightening a bent rim by hitting it against the ground: "You may be surprised how straight you can get a wheel this way."

This comprehensive manual is essential reading for those who love their bike. "All you have to do is follow the instructions and trust yourself." Indeed. --M. Stein

Average review score:

Nice beginner's book
A lot of good basic information and up to date. SOme though, is too basic. His instructions for adjusting derailleurs are so poor as to be barely adequate. For the front deraill. for example he has 3 steps. HI gear-- 1.shift back and forth between the middle and inner rings. 2. If the chain jumps over the big ring, tighten the hi-gear limit screw. 3---(more of the same)the .Yea, this is good basic stuff to get you into very roughly correct adjustment, but that is all. Better info is free on Park tool's site. From the troubleshooting section--Tire is Flat. Cause: tire deflated. Action: pump tire. I doubt anyone is so inept they need to be told that.

That said, it is good for those he said it was written for: "(Those) who do not think they are capable of maintaining their bikes." I have the Bicycling magazine book too, and frankly I cannot say one is better than the other. The fact is, once you get the basics down, if you have any mechanical experience or aptitude, most of this stuff is pretty simple. I had hoped for some more advanced tips on making things operate more smoothly or efficiently, but while the Bicycling mags book has some, this has very few. It's a simple book with the basics. Anytime you find a "maintenance" book that tells you ho to chance a tube, you are looking a a very simple book. If you need more, you'll be disappointed. If the basics are what you want, this books is more than adequate.

Great book from a great team
Lennard Zinn, revolutionary in the field of custom bike design, regular contributor to Velo-News, and sponsor of a women's racing team, joins up with well-respected wildlife artist Todd Telander and world-class racer Jonathan Vaughters to create a road bike manual that is not only clear and detailed, but manages to be an interesting read as well.

This manual helps you identify the problem, lets you know which tools you will need, and takes you through each repair with simple steps. Whether you are building up a bike from scratch, fine-tuning your derailleur adjustment, or simply fixing a flat tire, you'll find that the book has easy-to-follow instructions for your task. Todd's accompanying illustrations are works of art in their precision, and further clarify the text instructions.

There are so many benefits to repairing and maintaining your own bike, not the least of which is saving money. Invest in 'Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance' and you'll find that this task can also be quite enjoyable!

Already saving me money!
This book is great! After going to my local bike shop and paying $18 for a simple gear and brake adjustment I knew it was time to start learning how to work on my own bikes. My confidence is growing as I am learning the inner workings of all these formerly "mysterious" mechanical devices. Zinn writes in a way that is easy to understand and gives you confidence. Trust me..nobody will adjust your gears with the precision that you will after you learn how. My shifting has never been smoother! I think besides all of the normal maintenance on my bike, I will probably build one from the ground up as my next project.
I highly reccomend this book if you are mechanically declined (like me) or mechanically inclined.

The best there is... but not perfect
Anyone who works on their own Saab should know that the Bentley manual is King. There's just not a better manual out there. However, even this book is lacking in a lot of ways. For one, it's not for the beginner or for someone who's afraid of messing up their car. This book assumes you have a fairly well-established knowledge of the car and skips a lot of details it assumes you'd know. A total novice would be lost with this book.

On the other hand, if you do know these cars pretty well, the Bentley manual can help fill in the blanks of a project you'd otherwise not want to do if you didn't have a little guidance. Not for the faint of heart though.

An Essential Help
This is a great book for working on the 16 valve engine. It covers more of the nitty gritty stuff that you need when working on the more advanced Saab engine. The turbo section is great. The only complaint I have is that the book is not more specific about the differences in the engine configurations from one year to the next. But if you need wiring diagrams or schematics this is the book for you.

It's already paid for itself in one repair
My saab was running great - then not so much. The idle speed was running very high most of the time, around 2,000 rpm. When I touched the accelerator it dropped down to around 1,200 rpm, still about 300 rpm above normal. It also (just once) alarmingly lost then regained power, quickly, so I was kangaroo-ing down the road looking like a first-time driver not able to handle the clutch.

Upon receiving the book I started to diagnose the problem. Within thirty minutes I was confident it was one of two things, both easy to check using the information in this book. It turned out not to be the air mass meter, but instead was the throttle position sensor. The car was fixed within an hour and is running (touch wood) wonderfully now. Using this book saved me money.
