Best of it's type
The Bishop/Tardel "How to Build a Traditional Hot Rod" is the very best book of this genre that I have seen.

It's chock full of good clear photos and captions that explain exactly what's going on.

As well as accurate measurements. Something not found in most other books.

It's apparent that Bishop and Tardel put a lot of extra effort into this book and you'll find it to be quite detailed.

Even if you're building a modern style roadster or coupe, there's a lot of valuable information in this book that can apply.

And at the least make you appreciate hot rod history in a manner not seen to date.

Bishop and Tardel are a couple of guys who have been there and done that and if this book doesn't make you want to start building a traditional hot rod I'd be surprised.

Should be called "As Good As It Gets."
I bought this book, then I bought a Model A. This is the only modern book I've read that can gives the reader a strait forward guide to building an real hot rod circa 1950. The correct wheel choices, banjo rear ends, Naugahyde! No Chevy 350s or billet here! Bishop & Tartel show you how the old timers did it, and then how to do it right.
I use it as a reference book and take everywhere. It's the basis for my A-V8, I couldn't build as good a period car without it. The pictures are captivating, the diagrams are totally right on. If I didn't feel as strongly about this book I wouldn't be writing this review.

Authentic rodding
I was very pleased with this book which has helped me focus my Model A Hotrod build up and simplified things. Step by step guide to building your traditional A-V8. Has probably saved me a year or more. Is worth reading just for the chassis chapter which shows you how to build a solid chassis without boxing it! If you're building a traditional hot rod you need this book.

How to Keep Your Subaru Alive: 1975 To 1988: A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Complete Idiot

Authors: Larry Owens and Joe Leahy

In the grand tradition of How to Keep Your VW Alive, this is an eminently practical manual on fixing your beloved Subaru. A well-written knuckle protector!
Average review score:

Be a Starship Subaru captain!
Being a previous VW Bug owner and having gotten the original "VW Idiot's Guide" all greasy and dirty, I love this book. (It was fascinating to learn that Fuji (Subaru) built their motor based on the original Porsche/VW design but added water cooling!).It puts you in touch with your car...gives you confidence that you can become a hobbiest/mechanic... and you can easily figure out what maintenance you can do at home with minimum tools and which maintenance you should let some real mechanic take on. Best of all: Save money! Do maintence yourself! Spot problems before they amount to big money! As they say in the original VW book: "Know your ass....(donkey)" and it will treat you well!

Absolutely fantastic
I never really knew a thing about cars, and received this as a gift 8 years ago. Motivated by limited cash and that nagging sense of being taken advantage of at car repair places, I started making my own repairs and doing my own maintenance. My 84 GL is, now, in way better shape than my dogeared, oil-stained copy of this book, and I feel much more in control
Owens rules--the book is exhaustive and methodical and, at the same time, entertaining. The advice is wise (like that of a cool older brother, in one reviewer's words), the directions precise, the illustrations great (especially the one with the dogbone, the pie, and the toilet).
Thanks, Larry & Joe.

Excellent, excellent resource for all Subaru owners
I got my Subaru GL used about 3 years ago. It needed a bit of work. After the dealer persuaded my to let him replace all of the gaskets in the engine, I didn't have much money left for any other maintenance. Thankfully, I found How to Keep Your Subaru Alive. Using this great resource as a guide, I've done all kinds of repair and maintenance on my car. Now if only the publisher would update it so I can work on my Dad's '93 Legacy... Oh, well.

Excellent Resource for the Busy Person
Whether you're a lazy gardener, or just plain busy, Mara Grey will give you advice and solutions on how to maintain a trouble-free beautiful garden. She covers everything from the basic ingredients for a garden, to independent plants and bulbs, to even curing "Gardener's Guilt".

Are you much too busy to read this book? Then start off by taking the "HELP!!! I'm Too Busy to Read This Book" quick quiz. It will take you right to the sections applicable to what you're looking for, whether you're in the planning stages, needing help stages, or a troubleshooting stage.

If you are a beginning gardener, much-too-busy-to-garden gardener, or just a plain ol' lazy gardener, this book is a must-have!

a pleasure to read, witty and wise, full of good sense
The Lazy Gardener is full of common sense (or good sense - maybe it's not so common) about how to get plants to grow themselves in your yard. Its main emphasis is on working with what you've got and having time to enjoy it, instead of doing battle with it.

The Lazy Gardener helps you find plants you really like which will grow happily within the constraints you have. It helps you take an honest look at the time and tedium costs of the choices you make, as well as the enjoyment they will give you.

It talks about the whole garden space as well as plant choices - what sort of things to consider to make it your space, one you particularly like. It emphasizes getting pleasure out of your garden. It discusses how to structure the work of building a garden so that it stays rewarding, making it more likely that you'll keep going.

In all ways, the book helps you figure out how to make the garden that's best for you, with your yard, your time, your likes and dislikes, your dirt, water, sun, etc.

The Lazy Gardener is also a pleasure to read, a little new-agey in places, but full of wit and sprinkled with wry comments about the gardening "establishment". I am here at Amazon to buy 4 or 5 copies as Christmas presents.

An excellent book - I highly recommend it!
Since I don't have much time or patience for gardening, I've never really ventured into planting a full-fledged garden. This book actually makes it seem feasible. It gave me a number of hints and ideas of how to do it, and what to plant in it, so that I can have a good-looking garden without having to spend my life taking care of it!

A Great Synopsis of A Great Plane
I am an unashamed L-1011 fan. I believe that the plane was decades ahead of it's time, and still has some features (Direct Lift Control, which accounted for it's superior Autoland system, and an enormously sophisticated Speed Command System for example) that are unrivaled today. I was fortunate enough to check out and get a type rating on the L-1011 near the end of her life at the major airlines, and in every respect I believe she was the best designed aircraft I have ever flown. I can't recall meeting an L-1011 pilot who would disagree with that.

Jim Upton has put together an excellent book on the 1011, and I highly endorse it. In this one volume he accurately summarizes the operations and features of this beautiful machine. The photographs are clear and plentiful, the systems descriptions are well done (and will be the best you can see unless you get a 2,000 page L-1011 operations manual), and the format is logical and accessible. Buy this book and learn about one of the greatest airliners to ever grace the sky.

Excellent book if you are a die hard L-1011 Fan.
This is a great book to add to your existing L-1011 collection. Very insightfull with great pictures and descriptions of how the aircraft was designed/manufactured/tested. There were never many books written about the L-1011, but this is a great book for anyone who is a collector of aviation history. I strongly reccommend this book to any Tristar fan.

An excellent book about a truly excellent airliner!
This book is very good, filled with lots of wonderful details on the Lockheed L-1011. It actually has more interior photos than I have found in other similar books, which was a great extra. This book is so good, I plan on buying others from this series as soon as possible. If you like L-1011s, you will not be disapointed.

I'm not really into the "3-D visual approach" to anything about computers. Visually, the world is 3-D enough for me. In books, I want text and 2-D illustrations. Yet, I know from reading my e-mail that lots of people glom onto the overly illustrated approach. "PC Upgrade & Repair Simplified" is my very first exposure to one of the vastly popular Maran Graphics titles from Hungry Minds Books. The jacket boasts 6 million satisfied users--a huge number of users, when you consider that there probably are a few more who are unsatisfied, but uncounted.

The first thing I noticed about this book is that it took the entire Maran family clan to create it. They're from Canada, so right away you know they pay way too much in taxes.

The book really is lovely, with many colorful illustrations ("full color on every page"--except for the order form in back [ha!]) that show a computer in various stages of disassembly, hands and implements conveniently placed to illustrate proper upgrading procedures. It's exactly what you'd expect: little text, lots of pictures. That works fine for, say, pornography, but when it comes to computers I feel people really need more text and tables than cute pictures. Information-wise, the book leaves me wanting more. It's like a lava lamp: pretty to look at, but not much in the way of expressing ideas.

Most of the book concentrates on adding or replacing hardware. You see various steps and their corresponding illustrations. So, instead of reading, "Plug in the memory module," you see a wonderful Adobe Illustrator-like image of a hand shoving a SIMM into a slot. But that isn't enough. The book rarely mentions anything about the follow-through with the software side of upgrading and installing. The troubleshooting information reads like foam peanuts--i.e., space filler.

On the subject of hard-drive partitioning, this book devotes one paragraph and one illustration. Hey, thanks, guys; that really helps--not! In fact, the illustration that's next to the paragraph, and depicts a disk track and sector on a hard drive, is incorrect. Oh, well; so much for the simple approach. I mean, a certain group in the computer-book-buying public might be drawn to this colorful stuff, but they're going to leave the four-color, 3-D, PC-upgrade table wanting more. --Dan Gookin

Impressive
I'm quite impressed and satisfied with this book and with the entire Simplified series. This book presents an excellent introduction to and overview of PC upgrade and repair. It is very accessible to beginners and provides useful information for more experienced users. For visual learners (like myself), the illustrations are a great help.

It's challenging to take a complex subject and express it simply, clearly, concisely, and comprehensively. This book meets the challenge.

Other books in the Simplified series are listed on Amazon.com under the author name Ruth Maran. A similar series (which I also enjoy very much) by the same author is the Teach Yourself Visually series.

The Best Upgrading Book You can Buy
I owned the first edition of this book and decided to upgrade. That was a good choice. The discussion of USB-based devices is very valuable and explanation of Firewire helped me pick a video camera.

This is the easiest book on PC upgrading money can buy. A 10!

Very easy to follow
As a "computer senior citizen" -- most of this is new. This book helped me install more RAM and a new disk drive. Step by step pictures made it very easy. My kids were impressed!

Made it very easy to update my system
My system was SLOW. Over the weekend, I followed step-by-step instructions to add RAM, defragment my disk, reorganize my file, and fine tune a couple settings. In a few hours, my system was running much faster. I'm a novice. The book made these intimidating operations VERY EASY.

An informative commercial
This book is very educational about the topic, but it mentions the same supplier of materials an average of twice per page. I learned quite a bit from it and will continue to use it as a valuable reference, but expect to read about aerosol products and specialty tools from the same company throughout the book. The author doesn't stick with the most authentic of repairs and restorations, but he does do a good job of showing the authentic level of repairs as well as the not so authentic. Overall, worth the money but a tad annoying.

Finally a helpful book
After being frustrated with countless titles on auto restoration, this book is a God send. It covers everything in concise detail and includes large Color photographs. No other books Ive seen comes anywhere close to the quality of this one. The information in here is priceless. The author has obviously restored many cars and researched many techniques.

Checked it out from the library, now getting my own copy
I've got a 53 Studebaker to restore, so I checked out all the books available at the library on car restoration. This one was by far the best. In fact I liked it so much, I'm buying my own copy. It told me everything I wanted to know and more. For example, the chapter on removing rust explains and illustrates several ways to go about it, then makes recommendations complete with which is the best for the environment.

Masters of the Links: Essays on the Art of Golf and Course Design

Masters of the Links is a simply stunning collection of essays; most are lyrically crafted and as varied and intriguing as an afternoon stroll on a tough 18. Golf-course architects are a remarkable breed: lovers of the land and lovers of the game, they sculpt art out of nature as a challenge to those who dare to play on their masterpieces. In Masters of the Links some of the best designers ever to contour a fairway and tilt a green offer up some of the madness behind their methods. From pioneers such as Alister MacKenzie and Albert Warren Tillinghast to contemporary designers such as Pete Dye and Tom Doak, the collection explores how golf thinking has changed through the years--and how it's stayed the same. "A golf hole, humanly speaking, is like life," observed C. B. MacDonald, who carved the hallowed National Golf Links out of Eastern Long Island almost a century ago, "in as much as one cannot judge justly of any person's character the first time one meets him." Like a great golf hole, Masters of the Links has much to divulge on each meeting, and you don't need to be a golfer to savor the elegance and insight teed up in its prose.

A quick read & lasting pleasure
A real nice addition to any golf library. A rich and varied collection of essays, with some interesting vintage B&W photos of famous courses in their earlier states before today's "advanced" agronony. Most of the book is from golf's "Golden Age" - and is fascinating reading, raising some thoughtful insights for today's players. A plus and minus: the essays are short, three and four pagers...so it's excellent bedtime reading, but may lack a little depth for true students of the game who may want more. If you enjoyed Spirit of St. Andrews, or one of Tom Doak's books, you'll like this, too. In all, a very entertaining, balanced anthology for we duffers who enjoy delving a little deeper into the history, heritage and color of the game.

A classic
Where were all these essays hiding? What fun if you love courses and golf. The first book that makes golf architecture really understandable and fun. The old writings are especially funny and interesting, and the editor sets them up nicely and conscisely. Of the modern architects, Crenshaw's essay was the only disappointment because I wanted to read more of what he had to say. But he still makes a great case for the need for more short par-3's on modern golf courses. Also, great artwork, photos and production too.

Great collection of essays re: the art of golf architecture
This book presents a very interesting cross section of noted golf architects and historians presenting their views on golf architecture. There is so much to be learned from these Masters. It all serves to help us get more out of the game we love and the courses we play. A highly recommended read for any golfer.

Excellent Book for the PC Novice
This is an excellent starter book for people who would like to be able to do repairs and upgrades on their PC's but have had little hands-on experience.

The authors do a good job of covering a lot of areas without getting the reader lost in the technical jargon that is commom in other books of this type.

I am a teacher of computer science and I would recommend this book as a reference for anyone who owns a PC and doesn't want to pay through the nose for repairs every time their machine "coughs".

If this book saves the reader one trip to the service center then it is well worth the cost and then some. In addition it also contains some excellent advice on considerations when upgrading your current PC.

A superb manual for home use as a basic instructional
PC Repair And Maintenance: A Practical Guide by computer repair technicians Joel Rosenthal and Kevin Irwin is a do-it-yourself guide to repairing common computers (running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000 or XP) and is specifically meant and recommended for the non-specialist general reader. Easy-to-follow instructions, step-by-step tutorials, and an emphasis on practical and "hands-on" approaches fill the pages of this outstanding guide which is organized around the core principle that a deep understanding of "how a computer works" is not required to diagnose and repair basic problems. A superb manual for home use as a basic instructional and an ideal reference for anyone contemplating a career in the computer repair business, PC Repair And Maintenance is enhanced with a companion CD-ROM offering video tutorials on basic tasks such as installing a new memory card, hard drive, new battery, and more.

ONE SOURCE INFORMATION
THE HARDEST PART OF A PC REPAIR OR UPGRADE IS FINDING THE CORRECT INFORMATION TO DO THE JOB. USUALLY IT IS NECESSARY TO CONSULT MANY MANUFACTURERS MANUALS FOR THE HARDWARE PORTION OF THE JOB. ONCE THE HARDWARE WORK IS DONE THE REAL FUN USUALLY BEGINS, LOCATING THE INFORMATION NECESSARY TO GET THE SOFTWARE TO WORK WITH THE HARDWARE. PC REPAIR & MAINTENANCE A PRACTICAL GUIDE PROVIDES AN EASY TO UNDERSTAND, COMPREHENSIVE, SINGLE SOURCE FOR BOTH THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE INFORMATION NECESSARY TO REPAIR OR UPGRADE A PC.
