Tools of the trade
This has been a very useful book. It will be useful for the beginner or the professional. As with many of Mr. Vizard's books, it easily understood and very detailed. I have already had very rewarding results and still have much more material to experiment with. The material is very practical and for the hands on enthusiast.

Very Highly Recommended!
I have not seen a better book than this regarding the building of Custom Fords and Mercs. It covers in detail all of the standard body, and more importantly, mechanical modifications that are commonly done to these cars. There is a great wealth of ideas in here, including things you may not have thought about,or have heard of,but did not understand why or how these modifications were done.It is absolutely required reading for anyone who is planning to build,or have built for them,a Custom Car.Don't start without this book in hand!

How to Expand & Upgrade PCs

Upgrading and repairing personal computers isn't hard, since most of the pieces comply with standard specifications and can be made to fit together with a little fiddling. Reading books on the subject, however, can be mightily confusing. That's because hardware books usually have grainy, dark, amateur photographs that show whatever specific component models the authors have on hand, which can make understanding your own components difficult.

How to Expand & Upgrade PCs is different in that it uses high-quality, full-color perspective drawings to show how the pieces of an IBM-compatible personal computer fit together. The drawings illustrate the parts in a generic way, so you're not tripped up by the details of any particular product. Preston Gralla--an accomplished and respected author--backs them up with labels and text. In the case of spreads that explain procedures (like how to change out a hard disk) the text is numbered, step by step.

Some of the drawings show whangingly simple operations--plugging in a keyboard, for example--but most of the illustrations are really valuable. Operations that most people will want to do--such as install a DVD drive or add memory--are emphasized. Make sure you use the Internet to find out about your specific components. --David Wall

Topics covered: Replacing and supplementing the components that make up an IBM-compatible personal computer, and how to add memory, add or replace a hard drive, add a DVD drive, do basic troubleshooting, and lots more.

Makes Computer Learning Much More Fun And Easy!
Preston Gralla and Que Publishing have done a great job updating and expanding "How to Expand & Upgrade PCs." This second edition provides a more comprehensive look at how average computer users with little technical know-how can perform major upgrades to their computers and expand the use of them by installing new memory chips, hardware, and a variety of peripheral accessories.

In keeping with Que's fine tradition of using high-quality printed graphics, this new edition is beautifully illustrated and designed to make learning much more fun and easier to accomplish. The book explains in simple terms how major computer components and technologies work, how to handle computer equipment, what the latest technological advances are, and how everything works together to make computing happen!

Readers will learn what the basic computer components are, how to open up computers with the right tools, how to connect cables and set switches, how to install jumpers, power supplies, hard drives, CPU and memory chips, a variety of circuit boards, floppy drives, CD-ROM drives, DVD drives, Zip drives, tape drives, and modems. Readers will also learn how to hook-up USB port devices such as printers, digital cameras, scanners, other accessories, and improve over all system performance within the Windows Operating System environment.

This fully illustrated book is perfect for small businesses, classroom use in public and private schools, colleges, adult education courses, for beginners, and will also make a fine gift for the first-time computer buyer!

If it ain't broke, you don't need this book. Otherwise...
...you need this book. While it lacks the narrative arc of, say, Moby Dick, it's just about as long -- and a heck of a lot more useful. Just the thing for an impromptu Nantucket sleigh ride (see p. 347). Look, what with what plumbers charge these days, you'll save the price of admission just as soon as you've saved $27. Extra bonus tip: If you have a table with one leg about 6 inches shorter than the other three, you can use the book itself to fix the table!

A Complete and Useful Book When Hiring A Home Contractor !
The book is extremely helpful to all homeowners who are planning to hire a contractor. The book is written in a very easy to understand format so you can ask the contractor the necessary and specific questions before you enter into a written agreement. The book helpfully describes "How Each Job Is Properly Done", "Costs Which Are Reasonable For Each Job " and most benefical are the areas the author describes "Potential Rip-Offs" by a contractor. What makes the book very helpful is that it goes into every aspect of home repair possible, be it the attic, deck, bathroom, roof, cabinets, garage, painting, flooring, electrical, kitchen, driveway repairs and etc., etc., etc...

You've been properly warned ! Considering that home repairs are the biggest single consumer complaint to authorities and the most small claims court cases, this book should help your odds of avoiding a home repair nightmare.

The old boys show us how it was done
While a few thumb worn copies of the original edition may show up at swap meets, it's cool to have a brand new copy that won't fall apart at the seams. It's not so much a history book but, rather a window that shows you how performance was accomplished long before anyone ever uttered the words "small block chevy". There are many techniques and parts vendors that have been lost with the ages. Some techniques are no longer practiced and it would be well advised to take caution with some of their advice. Let's face it in 1951, there were no shoulder harnesses or SRSes,and dashboards were steel, safety never really crossed their minds. Still, it's sure a fun book to have.

It worked for me!
I bought this book ten years ago and never got around to doing the tiling job I though I would. Finally, two houses later, I again wanted to tile. I was going to take a "how-to" class at Home Depot, but could never manage to get there, so I read this book instead and took notes as I went along. I measured my floor and went in to Home Depot with my list of needed items. I've now successfully tiled my bathroom and kitchen and plan to do the fireplace. This book had all of the information I needed on the "how-to" though I'm now looking at other books for ideas on tile design.

How to Keep Your Datsun L-Series-Z-Series Nissan Alive: Maintenance & Repair 1968-1986
Published in Paperback by Pub Group West (June, 1986)
Author: Colin Messer
Amazon base price: $19.95

Great help for any DYI early Nissan/Datsun owners
Though Colin Messer intended his book for certain models only, don't let that turn you off. In the John Muir tradition (How to keep your Volkswagen Alive: a manual of step by step procedures for the Compleat Idiot) Colin manages to entertain and inform at the same time. The illustrations are first rate and the expert knowledge has helped me many times over to understand and fix problems on my early Z car. Although the author clarified that the Z and other models were not covered, you can apply an enormous amount of info to other models. I consider this book an educational experience and though out of print, it is worth finding.
