One of the BEST A+ books around hands down
I have spent several months of hard studying and in-home lab exercises in preparation for taking the A+ exam and this book is one I use every day. One of the best things about it is that it is peppered with actual lab exercises. This makes sense since this book is actually meant to be a textbook for college classes (I just wish it were also available in hardcover). At the end of each chapter are pages and pages of exercises to do to actually practice what you've learned. For those who don't have the money or space to set up an old guinea pig computer there are paper exercises that will get your brain matter really working. Don't dismiss the paper exercises even if you do have a guinea pig computer. A lot of them are not easy and duplicate some of the problems a repair tech will encounter on the job.
Which brings me to yet another aspect of this book I really liked. It has added emphasis on troubleshooting. I have a lot of A+ books - all the standard ones most people find in bookstores and none of them focus on troubleshooting to the degree this one does. Again it makes sense since this book is supposed to be a textbook for courses that help people get a job as a PC repair tech. People bring in their computers because something isn't working correctly, right? So troubleshooting becomes an essential skill. I recognized a lot of the troubleshooting techniques I use on my job and several new ones I didn't.
Hardware and Operating Systems are given in-depth coverage. Probably far more than you would ever be tested on. For the OS portion of the test everything from DOS/Win 3.1, Win95, Win98/ME, NT, 2000/XP is examined. Even things that A+ doesn't really focus on anymore are given good coverage. Mainly, because on the job you'll likely face situations where it's good to know for troubleshooting older systems.
In a market full of A+ books studying any one of them thoroughly will be enough to pass. But if you want something that will help you on a job too - well, you can't go wrong with this one.

Thank you for the teacher's material on the Complete Computer Repair 2nd ed. Textbook. This material has made teaching this material from your book the most helpful of any material I have ever used. I have been teaching for 20 years, and this is the most complete and user friendly information I have used. Again thank you and keep up the good work. If you have a catalog of other books, please send it.

I am very impressed
We have already adopted Schmidt's 2nd edition for use with my class at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA, and I am very impressed with it. I like the updated information and the addition of some review questions in Chp 6 on Troubleshooting. The end of the chapter exercises make preparing classroom activities much easier.

What a joy to have found this book.
I own every book, it seems, on computer repair. At last, I have found a book that is well written and easy to understand. Ms. Schmidt's explanations are straight forward and well illustrated. What a joy to have found this book.

Great book! this book will enable me to better instruct my students because the labs/exercises will save me many hours fine tuning labs that I have prepared. Other instructors in the same boat know how very difficult and time consuming it is to prepare and test lab exercises, and, be successful in ensuring that labs provide a positive learning experience. The chapter reviews and tests are reinforcement and well written and cover all important topics. I feel overwhelmed knowing that, finally, I will have such an excellent instructional computer book for my students. Please share my thoughts and thanks to Cheryl A. Schmidt. I like this book. Explanations are easy to understand., September 29, 1998

This is the only book my teacher assigned and I think it is very good. It's easy to understand and the lab exercises are good, too

The Best Technician's Handbook,
Reviewer: Maureen Murphy from Ponte Vedra, FL USA
There is not to much to say because the text explains it all. For those of you who have taken a class that requires this book you know what I'm talking about. Not only have I had the pleasure of owning this valuble textbook, I have also had the privilege of being a former student of Cheryl Schmidt's here at FCCJ in Jacksonville, FL.

Ms. Schmidt is one of the finest instructors I've ever had the honor of learning from. The one theme that runs through out her textbook as well as her classes is, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, ......ALWAYS READ THE DOCUMENTATION

An in depth look at our favorite flatmotor
If you're a flathead lover, you should own this book. There's a great deal of reference material in the front half of the book, and interviews including building suggestions from THE Barney Navarro, Don Francisco, Joe Reath, Tony DiCosta, Kong Jackson, Ron Ceridono and a great piece on Kenny Kloth, a real hands on guy who has doctored a STOCK BODIED '49 Merc coupe and unblown engine to run over 140 mph at Bonneville. That, friend, is an almost unbelieveable achievement. Tiny T bodied 296" Merc motors had a hard time doing that in the 1950's. These geezers know their flatmotors! Listen in!

The Complete Guide to Electronics Troubleshooting

Author: James Perozzo
Amazon base price: $120.95
Average review score:

The best book of its kind on the market.
I studied under James Perozzo at Renton Tech College ten years ago. He was one of the smartest teachers I have ever met. He has forgotten more about electronics repair than most people will ever learn. This knowledge he imparts to the reader in a very straight forward easy to understand way. He shows you in words and diagrams how to do the steps real techs do in the real world when you have to get a device or system back up and working FAST!. Basically a no BS approach to troubleshooting electronics the way its done in the real world. A basic understanding of electronics is necessary to get the full benefit of this text. The perfect compliment to a 2yr technician course at a Junior college or vocational school. If you are just out or close to leaving a tech course, buy this book. It could mean the difference in handling the repair yourself or having to call support and having them talk you through it.

Complete Guide to Laser/Videodisc Player Troubleshooting and Repair

Good Lay Person Repair Book for VideoDisc Players
Approximately equally divided between CED and LaserDisc player repair, this book covers CED player repair in fairly general terms. It is a good adjunct to the player's service manual, since the manufacturer service literature assumes the repairer already has a theoretical understanding of CED signal processing and system control. John D. Lenk has written many electronic service books, and is good at explaining things in lay person terms.

Excellent overview, even for mountain bikers...
There are few trail maintenance books around, just lots of little pamphlets such as those put out by IMBA. This book is worth the money for the many ideas and pictures even for those thinking about designing and/or maintaining mountain bike trails.

The opening chapter, which discusses safety, should be a must-read for those needing Emergency Action Plan info for work days. The tool list is quite good for most areas where you would likely ever be constructing trails.

Although some sections (constructing steps and moving rocks around using rope sling set-ups for instance) are not relevant, I found many good ideas in here for designing mountain bike trails. The section on drainage techniques is excellent and the whole section discussing proper trail design is a must-read.

A good book and hopefully the mountain bike community will have one of its own (IMBA, are you listening?) soon.

Great essential book
Excellent book for beginner to pro! This book makes it easy to keep your PC running healthy and troubleshoot potential problems.
I have Troubleshooting, Mainaining & Repairing PCs by Bigelow. I came to a couple conclusions:
1. I am not likely to upgrade, repair or physically install components. Therefore, I do not need a book about upgrading or installing.
2. I would rather keep this paperback on my desk, instead of Bigelow's Hardcover, 1000+ pages.
Enjoy the book. I hope it is as helpful to you as it is to me.

Great for new homeowners
This book is great. It talks about tools and techniques for all kinds of home repairs. It recommends what tools everyone needs for basic repairs, and which tools are useful but aren't necessary. If you are a first-time homeowner like I am, and you've never had to deal with this subject before, this is your book.

you need this book!
If you are going to own a Sprite or Midget with a 1275cc engine this is a have to have book.
I found that the part on the transmission was wondeful in that it allowed me to rebuild mine after a snapped 1st 2nd gear assembly. I also replaced the baluk rings for the syncros.
the special tools the recommend can be improvized using 3 19cent bic pin caps and a 4 inch steel hose clamp

all in all a book Icould not have rebuilt the engine and transmission with out.

I had this and lost it. Recently started a rebuild on my Spitfire and realized I had to get another copy. I have the Haynes book which isn't bad but this one seems to work better for me.
