Vintage Motorcycle Workshop (Foulis Motorcycling Book)

A must-have for motorcycle restorers and enthusiasts
I've used Radco's excellent book for several years now, and it is quite simply the best of its kind I have ever encountered. Its emphasis is on British and European motorcycles for the most part, and it is highly readable, excellently illustrated, and based on real knowledge and experience. Radco does not assume the reader to be an expert. Instead he leads us in a lucid and precise fashion from basics to knowledge that is quite literally unobtainable anywhere else. I have found this book to be a life saver time after time.
This is not a coffee-table book, even though it is a beautiful book to browse through for the pictures alone. It contains everything from hints and advice on respoking wheels (something most of us send out the the experts) to comparisons of thread sizes, to advice on how to brush paint one's own project.
I cannot recommend this book too highly.

the bible for people with vintage motorcycles!
This book is must for people with old bikes. The book explains every detail of the motorcylcle. And explain how to do a total restoration. Engine work, Transmission, carburation, electics and more. It also explains a lot of backround like threads and things that is needed to do the work at home. An exelent book

The bible of swingaxle VW maintenance
If you have a swingaxle Beetle then this book is where you get to learn all the factory methods of maintenance. Every step has pictures and clear instructions for you to follow. Very expensive. Buy this only if you are totally obsessed with VW maintenance. A lot of the special factory tools are almost impossible to find and this dissapointed me quite a bit. As it does not cover later engines, transmissions, etc. it would be helpful to have other manuals and books to help you with your VW restoration. Books I would recommend are the later VW model service manuals by Bentley and Haynes and the How To Rebuild book by Tom Wilson. If you want to tune your VW there is Bill Fishers How to Hotrod book which is ancient (1971) but still very relevant to tuning aircooled VWs. If in doubt you can participate in online VW forums and ask questions. It took me 6 months to rebuild my VW motor following instructions in this book and other service manuals (Haynes, Autobooks). 5 of those 6 months were for research and getting all the necessary tools ready. Only about 1 months work on weekends and friday nights to rebuild a 1585cc dual port VW motor for my brother's 1965 Beetle.

Every VW home mechanic should get this book.
The Big Blue Bentley is very informative and the procedures are very easy to follow. Practically everything one wants and needs to know when repairing their aircooled VW's is in this book. Very highly recommended. I give this book "Two very greasy thumbs-up"!

Bently wins hands down
While both Clymer and Hayes publish what could be described as an adequate service manual, the Bently service manual is definitive! Bently has an obviously close relationship with VW and it shows. At 500 pages Bently covers all permutations. When compared to the others, it may be twice the price but its ten times the manual. It really is a bargain.

I've used the Bently manual for everything from minor service issues (ie brakes & tune-ups) to major whole engine teardowns. The manual warns you of ahead of time where a special VW tool (they even specify the tool) or the servces of a machine shop is needed.

Frankly, I wouldn't attempt a repair without it. I just bought a new VW and bought the manual along with it.

Best Automotive Publisher Around
Robert Bentley Publishing has created an art out of automotive repair. Their books are the most in depth, real world available on the market. Unlike some other publishers on the market, their books provide you with all possibilities depending on year, make, problem, etc. rather than "if the switch doesn't work on position 1,2,3, but on four, replace the switch" which by the way wasn't my problem at all....(worn out #3 resistor on fresh air fan relay). Consider these books an investment, you won't only save time in troubleshooting, but also by doing it right the first time.

"Tells how...." doesn't capture it -- This is a must-have
So, you bought that squareback you've had your eye on since you were 18? You're going to need more than that "Compleat (sic) Idiot's Guide..." to get the whole thing working the way it should.

Wiring diagrams, Breakaparts, cross-sections and every number you'll ever need to identify, evaluate and fix whatever plagues your type 3. Add the decidedly helpful pictures and you'll be tooling down Highway 1 in your air-cooled wonder in no time.

By the way -- Type 3s are notchbacks, squarebacks, variants -- not "Love Bugs."

Excellent, solid, clear technical repair manual
First, allow me to level-set. Although I've had Ron Wright's manual only one day now, I see it'll provide years of helpful technical detail, plus I can hardly put the book down! You see, I've enjoyed the privilege of owning, and thus maintaining/repairing and even restoring about two dozen motor vehicles in my lifetime: cars, street and dirt bikes, and Personal Watercraft. Plus I've before worked 7 years in basic auto service.

I can see Wright's book will be a favorite manual, nearly up there with a personal favorite: Robert Bentley's phone-book-sized repair manuals for British cars. Already, I see Wright is more thorough than the factory service manuals for my 1965 Corvette!

I bought the '97 XT-350 with missing owner's manual a month ago; I've searched for a decent manual ever since. The dealer could order the small owner's manual, but could not locate the factory Yamaha service manuals. I later located both Ron Wright's and the factory Yamaha service manuals on the web. The two factory manuals required by Yamaha gave me sticker shock!! In contrast, Wright's manual appeared a bargain. I just hoped it was not similar to some after-market repair manuals, which leave me baffled, for example, I've read a section of a car repair manual under "A/C" which basically says "Charge it. If still inoperative take car to an A/C mechanic." Real helpful!

My XT came in superb condition with low mileage, except it became apparent the bike was never serviced (yes, I mean *NEVER*). Anxious to take out the bike for a thrashing in the dirt, I had to service it by a mix of memory of repairing my ex-1981 XT-250, combined with plain old instinct. (Heh, it's a simple bike after all.) Fluids, filters, lube, new battery, carb. clean, etc. I procrastinated the rest, waiting for specs and procedures from a decent manual.

Now, Ron Wright's manual arrived and it has everything I'd been looking for, and MUCH more. There are so many extensive, detailed photos (black-and-white), hints, and plain-language explanations of each step, part and tool. It appears nothing is left out.

Bravo!

Best Place To Turn for Household Answers
Earl Proulux is famous for his fascinating and useful column in Yankee Magazine. Don't have time to search over hundreds of past issues to try to solve a problem? This book is a compilation of helpful advice from the master of ingenious answers. It is divided into appropriate sections such as cleaning, animal pests, cooking, household repairs and many others. Each section can be a great read by itself but it is also useful as a reference since it has a thorough index to quickly locate the solution to any problem. Whether it is getting rid of an odor, cleaning an unusual stain or fixing a creaking floorboard, there are simple solutions here for almost any problem. Some will leave you wondering who tried it first and why (like rubbing table salt and a piece aluminum flatware in your hand to remove onion and garlic odors from your hands), but the end result is the same, it works. Get the book and keep it someplace where you can grab it in a hurry, you never know when you will need it.

Solutions to unusual household questions --
that were at one time common knowledge. Having read Proulx's column in Yankee magazine for years, it's exciting to find a compilation of his wit and wisdom. Proulx has an amazing and encyclopedic range of knowledge of the repair or reconditioning of almost anything, and also provides information on where to acquire the necessary ingredients and pitfalls to avoid when performing the task. He lends his voice of experience to the reader and many times, after reading about a commonsensical but not generally used method described by Proulx, I am amazed and left wondering, "how in the world did he know that?" This book fills a gap left due to the shortage of craftsmen today -- Yankee ingenuity at its best!
