If you want to fix computers, this is it.
This is the best book that you will find if you want to learn how to fix computers (including motherboard problems, harddrive problems, sound cards and Windows problems) or prepare for the A+ Exam. I found it very helpful in troubleshooting a some of my friends computers and it had information that was not included in many other computer troubleshooting books. In addition, I found the book was easy to understand, it imparted a lot of 'real-world' experience and had lots of examples. Lastly, I think it gave me a good foundation, not to mention some confidence, to pursue my MSCE certification. I strongly recommend this book and is well worth the money.

Troubleshooting the pc from A to Z and everything in between
Okay you want to learn more about computers and how to troubleshoot them. You eventually want you're A+ certification, and you think you need to buy to book in order to do this, right? Wrong, Prentice Hall has just combine the two and Troubleshooting the PC is that answer.

Covering all aspects of the technician's world, from the sound card and modem to the memory and ports to the video and storage, as well as the operating systems from DOS, Windows 3.x, 95, 98 and NT workstation, the book is great reference. Best of all it is written to the A+ specifications.

The books includes questions, hands-on exercises, figures, tables, pictures and over 650 A+ questions. You also get appendices for A+ Objectives, Binary number conversions, POST Error codes and operating systems error codes, a virtual plethora of computer information.

The author includes a detailed glossary; about the only thing that was missing was the "standard" cd-rom with A+ questions and software utilities. Overall I was very impressed with the depth of information and the author's ability to uncomplicated the breakdown of the information.

This is the 1. step by step manual I read that REALLY works
I can only second what the first reader review of this book sais. I was amazed how the author takes you by the hand and how he does not forget to tell you even about the smallest details you might forget about! Tackling a th350 rebuild is something really advanced, even for a quite experienced gearhead but with this book you will be on the safe side! Good Luck!

Don't fear your auto!
Auto transmissions are a mystery to most of us, even those who are performance enthusiasts. Ron's book is an excellent introduction into the inner workings of the TH350. More importantly though, the book gives great step-by-step info on rebuilding your 350 yourself. It's not as hard as you would think! The book is full of informative photos and diagrams and also contains info regarding high-performance modifications. If your thinking about doing your own TH350 rebuild, forget GM manuals. This is the only book you'll need.

Outstanding
You simply cannot go wrong. This book, at this price, is a veritable font of information. The only thing I'd like to see is an expansion of the detail. Info is given on block and head casting #'s, and valve sizes, but no info on camshafts. What's more, there were more American postwar engines in the period that were every bit as interesting as the V-8s (Corvair, Slant-6, etc.). I'd gladly pay more to see it expanded in it's scope. All in all, great book.

EXCELLENT
This book is what I was looking for a while!!!Great detail!Priceless facts!A must have for any motor head whether you like Ford Chevy Mopar or whatever. Its here! The book binding was a little cheaply made but the information was...WOW!I would have been happy if it was written on notebook paper! The book puts the engines into familys which is very comprehensive.I learned a lot and gained new respect for almost all the engines this book references!!!

Excellent treatment of engine controls
The book title, Understanding Automotive Electronics, is an understatement. This book, in chapters 5, 6, and 7, gives one of the best explanations of modern engine control systems I have ever read. Every major concept of OBD-II vehicles is discussed in clear precise language. These chapters alone are worth the price of the book.

My favorite feature of the book is the end of chapter questions which can be used to test your understanding of the material. And in the back of the book, you can check your answers.

Be careful when buying automotive books. Many are written by good in-shop mechanics who have poor writing skills. This book is different. Mr. Ribbens not only knows his stuff but can communicate it to others as well.

Great for Understanding Automotive Electronics
Great text for students and professional technicians on the operation, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of automotive electrical, and electronic systems. Lots of information on sensors. This was easy to understand with lots of illustrations.

Upgrade Your Own PC (Serial)
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (30 August, 1996)
Author: Linda Rohrbough
Amazon base price: $29.99
Used price: $1.48
Collectible price: $10.59
Upgrade Your Own PC helps people who want to accomplish specific upgrade tasks, such as replacing a hard drive or upgrading a processor. Enhanced by troubleshooting procedures and valuable tips, this book will help hardware novices get many jobs done and teach them something in the process.

Rohrbough does much handholding, devoting an entire chapter to the importance of using a grounding strap to prevent static damage to components. Quickly, though, she shifts to specific procedures and details what you must do in order to improve your computer in various ways. All the cost-effective upgrades--including RAM installation, the addition of a hard drive, video card replacement, and processor swapping--receive plenty of attention. The author even goes into detail on replacing motherboards. Her procedures are detailed and, provided you don't run into any really strange problems, will help you get the job done. Unfortunately, many of the photographs that illustrate this book are too dark and poorly cropped.

Exotic problems and unusual upgrades are beyond the scope of Upgrade Your Own PC. For those situations, you'll want a large, data-heavy hardware book that provides more reference material. --David Wall

The repair manual you need
If you need to know what you are not told in basic terms, then this is the book for you. Simple and clear instructions help you through any hurdle you may find yourself in as though you are a master. This book gives you the basics that you are never told in a way that you can understand but also gives you more advanced understanding if you require without baffling you. I would recommend this book to any age of person who would like to be able to fix or add componets themselves without paying large amounts of money to the computer wizz kids. The only down side is that the photo's are not very clear but hopefully a new edition will be forthcoming and this rectified.

May be the best book of its type, full of useful info
First saw this book at the library. It's now 30+ days overdue. Looks like I'll have to buy my own copy. Though this tome may not be what the advanced electronic brain tech-type may need, for those at the intermediate level down, this is a great book. More than just a basic "step 1 then step 2" style book, this book covers more than just basic component replacement.Included are in-depth explanations of hard and software. Also included are some trouble shooting tips. The title of this book is misleading, it is more of a tutorial on how to repair, maintain and upgrade your computer. A nice touch is the "plasticized" cover, which is more durable than a regular paper cover. The binding is such that it lays flat allowing the page you're looking at to stay there. Also, it is longer than it is wide, just right for having open while accessing your computer via the keyboard to perform some of the tips and tricks. I hope this book is as helpful to you as it is for me. I just wonder how much the library fine will be???!!!!

An ideal, step-by-step guide
Computer software and hardware expert Faithe Wempen's Upgrade Your PC To The Ultimate Machine In A Weekend is a fast-paced and superbly presented "user friendly" guide to swiftly and easily improving performance on any personal computer. From upgrading video and audio quality; to increasing hard disk space; to connecting to the Internet at a faster speed; and even replacing one's motherboard when necessary, Upgrade Your PC To The Ultimate Machine In A Weekend is an ideal, step-by-step guide especially and particularly recommended for those novices who wants to improve their computer's abilities but aren't sure where to start.

Packs a lot into a few pages
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. At only 350 pages, you would expect it to be light reading for novices, but it includes details about shopping for sound, video, and so on that really explains the technology behind the items and why one part costs more than another. Finally I understand video acceleration and APIs after reading this book for example. It's as much about choosing the right components as it is about installing them.

Upgrading and Fixing Macs and iMacs for Dummies

Now that they've been around for a couple of years, older "Renaissance" Macs (meaning iMac and G-series computers) are starting to need upgrades. Upgrading and Fixing Macs and iMacs for Dummies shows how you can extend your Mac's set of capabilities and improve its performance through hardware additions and modifications. Author Todd Stauffer ably explains what you can do, and comments extensively on what's worth doing. He also documents some common failures (such as the "Click of Death" problem that crops up on some Iomega Zip drives) and explains how to deal with them.

Because Apple designed the Macintosh line with easy upgrades (among other things) in mind, the job of this book is mainly to explain what sorts of upgrade products you can buy and how to distinguish among them. In large measure, this is a matter of decoding jargon and explaining at a fairly high level how things work. For example, Stauffer goes into detail on video resolution and why you might want to replace your current monitor and video card with better ones, defining terms and trade names as he goes. He also tells how to perform some upgrades step by step: for instance, how to upgrade a processor chip and configure a Mac for use on an AppleTalk network. --David Wall

Topics covered: Hardware upgrades for iMac and PowerMac G-series computers, and the related software procedures. Input devices (keyboards, scanners, and the like), connectivity units (such as modems), monitors, storage media (including CD recorders, extra hard disks, removable disks, and tape drives), and network hardware.

Average review score:

Stauffer Knows His Stuff!
Get this book and replace paranoia with common sense!--Todd Stauffer explains which troubleshooting, upgrades, and repairs the average user can make on the Macintosh (most of them--they're easy), and which are best left to professionals (a few). There are also handy tables showing which Macs take what equipment (drives, peripherals, etc.), so you'll know what to get when you shop for that external hard drive or RAM chip. Go ahead, get this book, and save a bundle on computer work.

Essential Companion for Vintage Mac Owner! Super Resource!
I really learned how my Mac works, RAM, Video, upgrading processors, USB, installing new Hard Drives and the like. In less than two weeks after buying this book, I installed two new Hard Drive in my Power Mac 7500, upgraded the processor to G3 300 MHz processor speed, installed a new Video Card. My old "vintage" Mac from 1996 is now up there with many of the latest. Best of all, I get to keep using ALL my SCSI peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.! ). Also, I don't. need to buy a new computer for 2-3 more years! This book is a real education and very engagingly and entertaininly written! This book saved way over a $1000.00 that I would have spent buying a new Mac. My upgraded 7500 is now a decent Photoshop, Office 98 and basic game machine. Kudos to the author! Now I'm going to graduate up to his more advanced book ... start with this one though! Thanks Todd!

Excellent assistance for legacy Macs-get it if you can
With 12 contributing authors, this is the most detailed, comprehensive reference available for legacy Macs; first generation PowerMac (6100/7100/8100 series) and backwards, PowerBooks and Performas, to the original Mac 128K. Hardware is covered particularly well, motherboard details, monitors and video resolution, memory SIMMs, Video memory and 3rd party video boards, Ethernet, Nubus/PDS slots, SCSI, and printer issues. Lots of pixs, tables, and diagrams. Gives a comprehensive list of startup issues and resolutions, 32ppgs!

The book answers many repeated questions that I see on the Macintosh newsgroups, when hand-me-down computers are given a new lease on life! I am amazed that so many people want to do revivals and upgrades!

I find it invaluable as a Mac DTP Systems Engineer. Much easier than scanning back issues of MacWorld and MacUser magazines. The book's index is 55 pages! I have used it for 4 years and it is quite marked up, with many added Post-it notes and scribbles.

Que, 94, ISBN 0-88022-960-8, 1012 ppgs, $35. An absolute must have if you can find it in a closeout bin, or used bookstore.

Now if a sequel of comparable comprehensiveness would become available, covering PCI Macs, Mac clones, and G3, a gargantuan task...

If you upgrade or repair you Mac you need this book!
I was first intorduced to the PC verson of this book in college, while taking a computer repair class. I was very happy to find the Mac verson of the same book. Takes you step by step through the repairs and upgrades. It also has lots of list and tables. With good information. I am looking forword to the next edition. A must buy

Upgrading and Troubleshooting Networks: The Complete Reference (Book/CD-ROM package)

Craig Zacker knocks the seven-layer protocol stack out of the park in Upgrading & Troubleshooting Networks: The Complete Reference. Although not all books in this series are as complete as their titles would lead you to believe, this one lives up to the claims of its cover and delivers a lifetime's worth of information about how computers talk to one another. Read this one if you're new to data communications, seeking any of several professional certifications that have to do with computer connectivity, or even if you've established yourself as a networking pro and want a solid reference on hand. This book generally deals with network equipment and protocols in a platform-independent way, although it dips into the specifics of Novell NetWare and (especially) Microsoft Windows networking after the foundation is laid.

Zacker is nothing if not patient, and he takes plenty of time to explain important concepts--such as standards documents--without seeming condescending, by using conceptual diagrams that usually are clear and helpful. He's not as quick to express opinions about which is the best of several ways to do a particular task, and instead explains everything and leaves it up to the reader to decide. --David Wall

Topics covered: Local and wide area networking for personal computers, both generically and as implemented under Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Novell NetWare. Hardware and architecture coverage is followed by a detailed discussion of protocols, naming schemes and name-allocation services, directory services (notably Novell Directory Services and Active Directory), and Internet services.

Average review score:

One of the most technically accurate books I have ever read.
When I look for a book on networking I want a book that will help not only for Microsoft but Novell. The Complete Reference lives up to its name and gives you a wealth of information to make the job of network technician a whole lot easier.

Packed into this 900 page-networking world of information is information from soup to nuts. Starting off with the OSI model, you move on the hardware, protocols, operating systems, connection and directory services and administration...

With figures, pictures, tables, diagrams and notes to help you understand even the most complex of issues, the author presents the information in a clear and detailed way that will help the beginner to the expert. The author presents the information in an organized fashion from beginning to end.

The book should have included a cd-rom with utilizes for Novell, Microsoft and Unix. The book seems to be as up to date as any book I have read and the information seems to very accurate. Overall this is one book I will have in my technical reference library.

The complete reference and that's for sure!

Upgrading and Troubleshooting Your Mac(R): MacOS X Edition

Gene Steinberg understands that the new Macintoshes--like all computers--are systems of hardware and software, and that neither may be separated from the other. Upgrading and Troubleshooting Your Mac: Mac OS X Edition is an intimate picture of modern Mac hardware (the Power Mac, PowerBook, iBook, and iMac platforms) and the points at which it interacts with Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X. As you'd expect, readers learn how to select and install add-in hardware like SuperDrives and supplementary RAM, but the Mac makes those procedures pretty easy by design. The real value in this book comes in two areas.

First, Steinberg answers all kinds of common, but officially unaddressed, questions. Is it absolutely safe to put your laptop through an airport x-ray machine? How does a G4 behave when a SCSI card is malfunctioning at the hardware level? What happens if you try to make an officially unsupported graphics card work? Do third-party processor upgrades work? He explains most of these matters with stories taken from his experience as a longtime Mac user.

Second, the author knows a ton of tricks for working with the Mac OS itself, and is liberal with his recommendations of utilities for diagnosing, repairing, and adjusting its behavior. His thoughts on how to solve problems by reinstalling your operating system without wiping out your installed programs will save you time in all but the gravest situations. You'll find this book particularly valuable if you do upgrade and repair work on unfamiliar Macs. --David Wall

Topics covered: Changing and adjusting hardware on modern Macintosh computers (PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs, Power Mac G4s, and, to a lesser extent, Power Mac G3s). All the key subsystems get attention: monitors, networks, SCSI chains, FireWire peripherals, and hard drives. Special (and especially valuable) coverage of Windows emulators and video capture hardware appears as well.

Average review score:

Filled with case histories to illustrate common problems
Gene Steinberg's Upgrading & Troubleshooting Your Mac: Mac OS X Edition is a hands-on manual that focuses on both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.1 and later. It discusses upgrading, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting. Filled with case histories to illustrate common problems and repair solutions, this book covers a wide range of important issues -- from survival advice for laptops and organizing SCSI chains to overcoming Ethernet difficulties. 612 pages

Makes Mac OS X Safe for the Rest of Us
At last, a book that's taken away the fear of Mac OS X. Mr. Steinberg's newest book not only tells you how to get the most out of your Mac hardware, he shows you how to make Mac OS X 10.1 play nicely. I was pleased to discover a way to do a clean install of Mac OS X without erasing my drive (something Apple has yet to figure out) and a handy terminal tip that helped me empty the trash when I started getting messages that it was "in use."
