Excellent textbook on repairing plastic
It is refreshing to read a "how-to" book by someone who actually knows what he is talking about. Too many recent automotive "how-to" books are written by inexpert authors who rely on other people's knowledge, and the author's lack of first-hand exerience shows. Kurt Lammon obviously knows his stuff.
Mr. Lammon takes us through all aspects of the repair, assessing whether to repair or replace the part, how to identify the type of plastic, how to choose the most appropriate of five methods of repair, and how to refinish the repaired part. Each repair method is covered in great depth. He includes details only an experienced repairman would know - what grit of abrasive to use, what RPM to use when grinding, what products to use for cleaning, etc. The appendices briefly explain what tools will be needed, the science of how adhesives work, and where to find materials. There is a thorough index so you can find the information you need quickly.
This is a great textbook, but it is not literature. The writing style is factual but dry, the drawings are easy to understand but sterile and cold. This is exactly what a hobbyist or body repairman needs to get the job done. If you want to know how to repair plastic bodywork, buy this book. If you want amusing anecdotes about automobiles, read something by Peter Egan.

Five Stars... what do you expect? It's my book!
I'm sure this review won't be very persuasive being that it's coming from the author. I can assure you, dear prospective reader, that this was no half-hearted effort. I poured a tremendous amount of time and energy into this book; it took me about one year to write the text and develop all of the line art. Kudos to Dan Kennedy and his staff at Whitehorse Press for the editing and layout. They appearance of the book is absolutely first rate, and I'm proud that the book is the first one by Whitehorse Press to be done in full color from cover to cover.

As far as I know, this is the first book to detail the methods and technology of automotive and motorcycle plastic repair for the layman. It builds on my eight years of experience as technical support director for Urethane Supply Company, a leading manufacturer of plastic repair and refinishing products for the automotive collision repair industry.

This is a great book for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to do some repair or restoration work to his own vehicle. It would also be a great study guide for the collision repair technician who would like to broaden his skills base and create a source for additional revenue. The book only assumes that you have an interest and desire to save money by repairing your own plastic parts.

I think there's a very good chance that, if you choose to buy this book, you'll save the purchase price of the book with your very first repair and that you'll build skills that will save you much more money in the long run. If you have any questions about the book, please e-mail me at kurt@urethanesupply.com. Enjoy!

How to Restore Your Military Harley-Davidson 1932-1952: Authentic Restoration Guide (Authentic Restoration Guides)

please add this to my initial review...
The pictures are in general too small. I would like them at least twice as large.

Great companion to "How to restore you Harley-Davidson"
Bruce Palmer is already well known for his book: "How to restore your Harley-Davidson", that is considered world-wide as the bible on restoring older HD's. His new book is presented as a companion to that book. So it does not cover the restoration process itself but concentrates on describing the correct parts and finish. It gives detailed descriptions of the relation between engine-numbers, war department registration numbers and U.S.Army contract specifications. All military HD's built between 1932 and 1952 are presented. In total 38 types, including of course WLA (For the 42WLA alone 7 flavors are distinguished) and WLC, but also XA, the big twins and others. Very valuable for WLA restorers is the matrix describing all parts that differentiate the 17 types of WLA (40WLA - 52WLA).

Using both books it is possible to restore your military HD to factory-fresh specification. An exception is the rare experimental XA (the BMW R-71 clone) that is described to great detail in this book, but lacks support from the first book.

Restoring to 'motor pool' specification (bikes as seen in the field) is not treated in the book beyond the pointing to common pitfalls. For unit markings the reader is deferred to U.S.Army publication AR 850-5. There are about 250 pictures in the book. In general I would have liked more photo's of bikes in actual use to support the restoration to 'motor pool' instead of 'factory fresh'.

This is really a most wonderful book, that is bound to get again the label 'bible' attached to it. And rightly so! In my classic HD club there's always a lot of discussion on what is right and what is wrong for a certain WLA or WLC, and until now nobody was really convincing because the supporting material was lacking. From now on if anyone disagrees with this book, he (she) better provide proof! In short: recommended!

The Insider's Guide to Hmos: How to Navigate the Managed-Care System and Get the Health Care You Deserve
Published in Paperback by Plume (September, 1997)
Author: Alan J. Steinberg
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $0.72
Buy one from zShops for: $0.70
The crux of the problem with health maintenance organizations, as Alan Steinberg points out in this remarkably frank volume, is that HMO doctors and their patients are adversaries, rather than partners, in the patient's medical care. Because a doctor who accepts patients from an HMO gets paid the same whether he sees a patient or not, a doctor has every financial incentive not to spend time with someone who's in an HMO, thus preserving his office hours and energy for those customers who pay cash or are covered by a traditional fee-for-service insurance plan. In other words, if you belong to an HMO and you've ever felt you were getting the bum's rush out of the doctor's office, you probably were. This Insider's Guide shows you how to get around the HMO roadblocks, but in the process will scare the bejesus out of anyone enrolled in a managed care plan.
Average review score:

The author focuses caringly on the patient's needs
It is obvious from the moment you begin the book that Dr. Steinberg cares about his patients and their health, and after reading his book I feel I understand how to get the most out of my HMO. Thank you Dr. Steinberg!

An excellent book for anyone, especially an HMO patient
This is an excellent exploration of the HMO system that is taking over American health care. If you belong to an HMO, you MUST read this book -- it could literally save your life, as the many case studies of unfortunate dead patients make clear. The author gives solid, practical advice about how to get the most from your HMO. I'm not in an HMO, but I still found the discussion of the history and workings of HMOs fascinating.

Clymers Impressive '84-'93 Ninja Service/ Repair Manual
Being a self-admitted tightwad, I hesitated when first buying this book. Even though Amazon.com had the best price I found, I was still wondering if I needed to spend this much money on a book I thought I would probably never use. Upon receiving the book, many of my initial reactions were proved unjustified, for a number of reasons.

This is at first glance an impressive book, measuring almost two inches thick. Upon delving into the myriad of information in the many chapters, the true worth of this publication was quickly revealed. This is 603 pages of highly detailed and instructive material. There are literally hundreds of photographs and detail drawings, giving even a first time mechanic a chance to see exactly how each part of the machine works, is disasembled, repaired and then reassembled. Step-by-step instructions are clearly listed, in a easy to read and interesting fashion. Numerous hints and how to tips make most of the jobs easier and further enhance the value of this publication.

Another nice feature are the areas that warn the reader about possibly dangerous repair procedures and how to avoid potential injury to mechanic or motorcycle. The book also lists any problems previous models have had and what the owner can do about them. For instance, upon first reading the book there was a warning in a side bar in the chapter on valves and valve adjustments. It informed the reader that certain ZX-900 Ninja owners could have bikes that had a factory recall. Specifically, certain bikes had valve spring retainers that could fail at high engine speeds, causing what the book termed 'catastrophic engine failure.' The book listed the serial numbers on the motor of the bikes that were affected. Unfortunately, mine was included and I'll have to pay for new retainers when the valves are adjusted. But, it's a small price to pay for something I had not known about that could of caused a loss of my life or someone elses. It was another perfect example of just how valuable this book is to those that buy, read and use it.

Overall, I don't see much that can be improved upon in this book. The text is easy to read, the pictures and diagrams are perfectly executed and the tips, how-to hints and reader warnings offer a wealth of assistance. There is a complex index and even a section in the back of the book with blank pages headed 'notes' at the top of each page. For those owners that want to perform their own service, repair and maintenance on their older Ninjas, this book is as important as any other accessory you could buy and was worth every penny. It earns five stars from me.

Better than service manual
It's quite useful manual , especailly lots of "Cautions" tell good tips. If you buy this manual, no need to get service manual.

Helped Me Tremendously
I used this book to plan my own kitchen and it helped me avoid mistakes. I was very tight on space in my kitchen/dining area, therefore every inch counted. It gives great guidelines for minimum space requirements. For example, it tells you how much space is needed between a wall and a table; how much space is necessary for each person at a table; how much countertop space should be left by the refrigerator or near the cooktop; how wide an island should be; how much space is necessary for the aisle in a kitchen so 2 people can work, etc.

Also included is assessing your needs and taking an inventory of your current kitchen which I found useful.

Other sections such as choosing fixtures and appliances or selecting materials weren't as beneficial to me personally, but overall I would highly recommend this book to someone planning their own kitchen - it gives some good solid guidelines and things to consider when planning a kitchen.

Great Basic Design Book
If you are beginning to think about remodeling your kitchen, read this book first! This book takes you through the basic steps of redesigning your kitchen, covering options for design, layout, storage, and appliances. The kitchens pictured are stunning, and run the gamut from Parade of Homes/celebrity level to actually affordable.

I was able to see some wonderful options that are realistic, along with a couple dream items I may splurge on. While I have bought other design books and magazines since, this is still my favorite. It made me excited about remodeling!

Lotus Seven: Preparation, Restoration and Maintenance.

Authors: Tony Weale and Anthony Weale
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

The Bible for the Lotus 7 or Caterham owner.
This is by far the best book to have for a Lotus Seven through Type Four and the Caterham. It is very through and well written. It covers the history of the Seven. It also give you very complete mechanical description of the different facets of the car. Everyone that has a Seven should own this book. It is out of print so get it where you can. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy your Seven!

A valuable resource for 'Seven' enthusiasts; a classic read.
Written by a Lotus insider, this is a premium reference for all with an interest in the legendary 'Seven'.
Whether for owner, restorer, intending buyer, dreamer or (purists may suppress a shudder here) replica builder, the comprehensive text and informative illustrations presented by Mr. Weale are a practical guide, a significant historical reference, and a thoroughly inspiring read.

The Lotus Seven was a unique concept. Starkly functional, but with style; designed by Colin Chapman to provide an affordable, high performance sports car that could be assembled, maintained and raced competitively by an enthusiastic amateur.
The outstanding success of his radical approach to automotive engineering and design is reflected in the iconic status of this over-forty-year-old design that is still in production by Caterham Cars. (and being copied in backyard sheds all over the world, such is its' universal appeal.)

This book will be invaluable to owners who like to ensure their treasured Seven receives the maintenance a classic deserves, restorers seeking original specification or buyers researching covenance. The historical, technical and developmental detail contained in these pages will provide inspiration and priceless insight on components, materials and construction techniques for (I must plead guilty) imitators of Mr. Chapmans' magnificent design.
A highly recommended addition to your library.
(I must buy another copy for guests, my current one is much used and victim of the oily hand.)

Low Maintenance Water Gardens
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade ()

Painless Water Gardens to Enhance Your Peacefulness . . . .
Do you love water lilies? . . . Koi? . . . the sound of falling water? . . . the jeweled rainbows of a fountain's spray?

Do you have a bad back? Are you busy?

If you answered "yes" to at least one question in each of the first two paragraphs, this is the book for you!

Water gardening is something that I have always wanted to do, but was daunted by the sheer volume of work . . . and the risk of what could go wrong if I made a mistake. With Ms. Nash's help, both problems can be pleasantly removed.

The book starts by helping with planning and construction. What effects do you want? Sound? Fish? Shape? Match to your home? Lilies? Fountain?

Put it in full sun well away from trees and shrubs. Pick a spot that is elevated so that there will be no run-off into the water. Also, be sure you are well above the water line.

The book goes on to help you select materials, considering the initial costs versus the maintenance involved. You also get a sense of what maintenance is needed during each season, and how you can use preventive maintenance to avoid work later on.

The book contains many practical principles and ideas that I never would have considered. For example, you can put a screen over the water during the season when debris is most likely to get into the water. There is also an inexpensive skimmer you can make that works automatically.

How you filter the water is an art in and of itself. I loved the concept of how you can use a combination of natural filtration and an easy-to-access pump to create clean water.

As an example of another great idea, Ms. Nash suggests having one white fish if you plan to have fish. Changes in that fish's color then will help you monitor the quality of the aquatic environment before unnecessary stress develops.

If you aren't sure what kind of water lilies you want, the gorgeous color photographs should be a great help.

The appendix even has all kinds of useful ratios of the sort the new water gardener is likely to need to know, but will probably not remember.

Unless you are planning to create something on the order of Monet's garden at Giverney, you will find this book tells you more than you could possibly need to know. Keep it as a handy reference, and you'll soon be enjoying a marvelous water garden designed to suit your own preferences!

After you finish enjoying this book, I suggest that you also think about what other changes you could make in your garden that would make it more peaceful for you . . . with minimal effort and maintenance. Do you have a bird bath? Do you have a set of wind chimes?

Establish a natural balance by thinking through the processes that need to be established and maintained . . . in all parts of your life!

Best book I've read with how-to's for busy water gardeners.
Great book for beginners! Helen Nash not only tells what to do for low maintenance water gardening, she tells what not to do. Complete with advice on low-maintenance plant and fish selection. A simple, quick-read book. Fully illustrated.

Ever Jet owner should have a copy
Excellent book to walk you through the basics of rebuilding a Jet drive. It will take you through disassembly and assembly step by step. I would recommend it to anyone that is rebuilding or considering rebuilding a Jet.

This book does not cover Blueprinting just the basic rebuild and it is a little weak on tolerance information for the Berkley jet drives. But well worth having anyway.

everything you need to know
This book is an excellent overview of the major jet drives in use today. It is somewhat technical, but nothing covered in it could not be handled by a proficient do it yourself mechanic.
