Finally A Practical Handbook On Power Generation.
The author puts his decades of experience in nuclear and fossil power generation into this book.
It contains general mechanical and electrical theory, design approach, operation and maintenance concepts. It is written in practical terms that most working professionals can understand easily. At the same time, students will benefit greatly by the hands-on approach, gaining virtual experience into a power generation station.
This book is highly recommended for experienced professional and technical staff with the desire to expand on their knowledge. As well as students seeking a career in the field of power generation.

Power Generation (Selection, Application, Operation)
As a professional and in order to meet the daily technical challenges I rely on sources that they can provide me with accurate and practical information.
The newly acquired "Power Generation Handbook" authored by P.Kiameh is a valuable addition to my library and a starting point in my quest for answers.
The well research and equally well presented material of this "Handbook" has been a foundation of many valuable information.
From the way the information is presented one can "see" that the author has many years of "hands on' experience, which was accumulated develop and refine on the "floor" of a very large generating facility. As such the information presented is accurate, practical and proven.
This Handbook is a must for any professional.

Excellent Practical Handbook
This is an excellent, practical handbook on power generation. It contains clear descriptions of how power generation components are constructed, how they work and how to maintain them. Points in the text are illustrated through numerous detailed photographs, drawings and graphs. Topics include steam turbines, governing systems, valves, lubrication systems, gas turbines, bearings, seals, combined cycles, cogeneration, electrical components, etc.

I have attended two courses taught by Philip Kiameh at the University of Toronto's Professional Development Centre, one on power generation equipment and the other on mechanical equipment. Philip was an excellent teacher and his text books are similarly excellent and I highly recommend them. This text book is a valuable reference to the power generation course material.

As David Pogue notes in the foreword to Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible, "The average Windows user must buy a new machine every two years; the average Mac fan keeps a Mac model running for five." One of the reasons that Macs outlive their competitors is their expandability and upgradability. With everything from software tips to detailed explanations of Mac hardware, the Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible will keep your Mac on the cutting edge for years to come (and save you some money in the process). But more importantly, author Todd Stauffer is concerned with personalizing Macs, adding bits of hardware and software that will allow you to record CDs, improve 3-D performance, or add a cable modem. The first two sections of this mammoth book consider the issues involved in making an upgrade decision and then engage the specific needs of a range of upgrades (from scanners to networking tools). The last two sections focus on troubleshooting--avoiding (or recovering from) bombs, freezes, or crashes. Throughout, Stauffer deftly moves from basic explanations to more complex technical matters when he compares, for example, IDE and SCSI hard-drive technology. Black-and-white photos accompanying the text are certain to take the jitters out of under-the-hood work. This is very much a hands-on guide for the serious user. The enclosed CD-ROM includes over 50 freeware, shareware, and demo tools such as Memory Mapper, CacheSaver, TattleTech, and Fonts Manager. --Patrick O'Kelley

Excellent Reference
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about the Macintosh. After reading this extensive, well written and documented text I only added to the knowledge I have gathered over the years. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible is a fantastic resource guide for upgrading, troubleshooting, and general tips on the Macintosh. After reading the book I had no problems installing a high speed SCSI card in my own Mac. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible contains a wide range of useful information and guides the reader through the implementation this information (e.g., troubleshooting SCSI devise ID's). I found the section about digital cameras especially helpful when I started looking at the specifications of various models in order to make a knowledgeable choice about which one to buy. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible covers just about any add-on device (e.g., scanners, printers), how they work, and how they interface with the Mac to produce the best results. Within the rapidly changing area of Macintosh technology this book is a great reference for Mac users who want to understand the technology and make the best use of it. I found reading this book a wonderful learning experience, as are all of the "Mac Bible" series books from IDG.

Great resource; makes the technical simple!
As MacAddict's Ask Us columnist and author of Apple Confidential, I'm happy to recommend Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible by Todd Stauffer. This massive 942-page paperback helps you identify the bottlenecks in your system, then plan, perform, and troubleshoot the entire upgrade process. Stauffer not only covers increasing your raw processing power by replacing your Mac's CPU, he also discusses the pros and cons of adding memory, hard drives, input devices, networking capability, and a whole range of peripheral possibilities. At just $39.99, Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible is a lot cheaper and more reliable than most consultants, plus it comes with a CD-ROM loaded with more than 50 useful freeware, shareware, and demo tools.

A bible !!
This book has really help me. It contains information about troubleshoting, installation, upgrade and more. Good graphics, easy to understand tables and easy to follow instructions.

Electrical Equipment Handbook by P. Kiameh
Very comprehensive. A very valuable desk reference, highly recommended.

An exellent electrical equipment reference
Philip Kiameh has done a remarkable job of providing in depth description of electrical equipment in pleasantly readable format. Professionals of electrical and non-electrical backgrounds will find this reference invaluable. This book is very well illustrated and descriptive with particular focus on maintenance. This is a truly valuable reference to the industrial professional with major electrical equipment to maintain and operate.

My Assessment of Electrical Equipment Handbook by P. Kiameh
Mr Kiameh has done it again. He has captured his vast practical knowledge into this simple yet comprehensive handbook. The difference between this book and a typical text used in the academic world is that one can find solutions and descriptions to their plant problems; the academic texts are heavily biased to the theorectical while Mr. Kiameh's approach hinges strongly in the industrial aspects.

A Must for Networking Pros and Amateurs Alike
The first edition was very good (see all the other reviews below). This edition, with the exception of some "troubleshooting technique" chapters, appears to be almost an entirely new book (I am glad I got both -- a LOT has changed since 1998, and Feldman has kept up with the times.) There are many more concrete examples that will be useful both for networking pros and the casual office network guy. Good windows coverage...good wireless...with easy-to-read, intelligent and funny writing.

Five stars superb!
I took Feldman's book to my first systems job as a newly-minted MCSE with no on the job experience. Feldman was my good companion during those first terrifying weeks when I was on my own and didn't know a data packet from a date. Unlike MCSE exam tomes and Microsoft guides, Feldman explains *networking* concepts w/o the Windoze myopia and offers concrete troubleshooting and discovery tools available freely to anyone. As the fog clears the stuff seems almost fun! Indispensable...I sometimes go back to it just to refresh my knowledge and rediscover certain basic concepts that one tends to forget. If you've been voted the "IT guy" at your small company, this is a friendly and useful guide. Thanks Jonathan!

Excellent book
Although not specific to any OS, architecture, or network design, this is an excellent text for anyone beginning a computer networking career. Some may claim that the first few chapters cover common sense, but these chapters superbly augment troubleshooting techniques used in repairing anything technical. The 2nd half explores the most common operating platforms, whetting the reader's appetite for further study in a myriad of networking concepts. This book alone won't make you an expert in any one area, and it doesn't claim (thank God) to be the definitive text for passing some certification exam, but it does offer essential general information any Sysdamin needs to hear again and again.

Native Florida Plants: Low Maintenance Landscaping and Garde
As a fairly new resident of Florida I look forward to Robert Haehle's NGA email each month, with his great advise & tips. This book is a "must have" for anyone new to tropical gardening, as well as, the Southern natives. The information & beautiful photos are especially helpful in identifying what is in my yard & what I would like to add.

Phenomenal Book
This was very helpful. It organizes plants by type, but gives enough information so you know where they best grow. It has lots of color pictures and also some landscape designs that make it easy for you to create something for your own yard (especially if you are a beginner). I wish there were something like this for the Pacific Northwest (now that I've moved).

Find the native Florida plant you need!
This is a great reference book for anyone living in Florida, who wants to identify and learn about native Florida plants. The book includes a photo of each plant with the common and botanical names. It provides zone numbers and descriptions of each plant's average height & light requirements. Also, bloom information, fruit, leaves, trunk, habitat, propagation and appearance descriptions. Chapters are divided by basic plant type - large trees, small trees, palm trees, wildflowers, etc.

Detailed work book starting with automotive basics, going onto buying an automobile, automotive expenses, safety, auto care, checking of fluids, electrical systems, cooling systems, braking systems plus much more. A recommend for those who want to educate a young driver, or have a begineers automotive class that needs a new work book. Easy to read with supporing photos to aid the reader. The CD is a nice addition which has activities and study questions.

A highly recommended primer and self-teaching tool
Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care by automotive expert Michael E. Gray is a practical and straightforward guide for anyone who owns a car or is considering buying one. The no-nonsense basics for beginners concern everything from insurance payments, to fluid level checks, to simple facts about the fuel, cooling, ignition, steering, braking systems, and much, much more make. Auto Upkeep an excellent and very highly recommended primer and self-teaching tool which is enhanced with accompanying CD-ROM contains activities, website links, and study questions.

Finally, a book about cars that people can understand.
What a novice idea! Someone finally wrote a book that I can use in a beginning automotive class! I've taught for 30 years+ and have never seen an automotive book that doesn't intimidate students. They actually like this one and enjoy reading about cars. In my classes I usually have 20% girls. At the beginning of the year I always say things to set their minds at ease. After handing out these books, and letting the class look through them, I could see the tension and fear vanish not only from the girls, but from the guys also. I would highly recommend this book for students of automotive classes and for the novice out there!

Excellent text, but photos not so good
The writing in this book was very good, and I especially liked that the author had personally tested the plants for this difficult climate. But, unfortunately many of the photos were blurry and unprofessional looking. Since the photos are always a favorite part for me of any plant book this did detract from an otherwise very good book. I will look for her next book Best Color Garden for Florida in a bookstore before buying so I can see that the photos don't have the same poor quality.

This book is soooo useful
Full of color photos in a large format, this book is essential if you want a decent looking garden in South Florida. All the other gardening books either dismiss this part of the country or give very cursory information. I like that her recommendations are field-tested and she gives additional information, like the lifespan of the plant. Well worth the money.

Wish I found this sooner.....
As a new South Florida gardener, I wasted money on three other books before I found this one. High glossy pictures on every page alone makes it worth the money. This author has tested all kinds of plants and isolated the best and easiest for this area -- as well as talking about care, possible problems, and suggested companions for each plant. I'm glad I found this book before I started re-landscaping my yard - I expect it saves me a lot of money. IF you live in South Florida - it's worth every penny!

Footnote Jan 2003: It has been 6 months since I used this book to re-landscape, and everything is now filling in beautifully.
Everything I chose is thriving. And the yard looks great.

The ultimate housewarming gift for the first-time homeowner
This book is the best housewarming gift I ever received!

Your furnace blowing nothing but cold air? This book will show you how to safely relight your pilot light. KitchenAid mixer gone on the fritz? Inkjet printer no longer drawing paper from the paper cassette? Dishwasher broker?

A troubleshooting chart and gorgeous, clear diagrams will explain not only how to fix almost any household problem, but also gives the level of technical skill required to finish the job, as well any special tools required to do so.

Kudos to the folks at Reader's Digest for producing such an excellent book. This volume is now my standard housewarming gift to all my friends.

Excellent resource
This book is very easy to navigate. Quite a few of the *jobs* in this book are simply too big for me, however...I wouldnt want to be with out this reference. Most recently I was having washing machine filling problems. Going through this book allowed me to eliminate some things that I knew could not be the problem which was very helpful.

Calling for a repair can be nerve wracking to me. I never quite know if they are telling me the whole truth about what is wrong. In this case I went through the book and was able to eliminate quite a number of things that it couldnt be. The problem turned out to be intermittant and I didn't end up making the appointment. However I did get on the phone with the company that made the washer and was able to talk about the problem....tell them what I thought it was, what I thought it couldnt be..and ask how much the repairs would be to fix any of the possibilities.

I am sure the same problem will come up again. And that I will have to deal with it at that time. But by reading this book which has a lot of easy to read, yet detailed illustrations I was able to get a handle on the problem and feel like an informed consumer.

The book is a very good shape (a bit longer than wide) so it lies flat on all pages which is essential when you are trying to follow it for a repair. I think this is really a home essential even if you do not do repairs yourself.

Super for both the novice and the experienced handyman.
This book is full of clear, concise instructions, great diagrams and detailed pictures. We've used it to fix vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, washers, dryers and garbage disposals - and I'm no handyman! Our super handy friend admired this book so much that we got *him* a copy. It's an excellent reference guide to have in your home, with troubleshooting flowcharts and easy to follow explanations. I highly recommend this book!

Spectacular Reference for VWs
I think this book is a must-have for anybody who pokes around the inside of their Jetta (or Golf or GTI). Not only does it contain the standard tear-down diagrams, but outlines tests on the car's systems and has charts for diagnosing trouble. (What's that noise?) It's all written in very plain English and is almost always very detailed (although its does have a few lapses). It saved me a pile of money I would have otherwise given to my dealer.

Be your own mechanic
What to say. This is an excellent title to have if you have a VW. I have a '89 Golf 1.6 GTD (2 doors) and lýke any owner of a car wanted to get the best out of my car after servicing but never pleased. So I took the servicing in my hands through this well written and illustrative book. Deeply recommend this book to vw owners.

The Most Thorough Book for Do-It-Yourselfers
I own a 1990 German built Jetta and have tried the Haynes manual for '75 through '92 models with little help. The Haynes is based on a complete teardown and rebuild of an older, gasoline vehicle. It doesn't discuss Diesel or Turbo Diesel, and it omits features found in later models, such as cruise control, and does not provide and explanation of determining what model you have. This book, published by Bentley Publishers, is more extensive and has far better illustrations and wire diagrams. My advice: if you want to save money fixing your VW yourself, skip the Haynes manuals and get this book.

Motorcycle Basics Manual (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual)
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (February, 1986)
Authors: Pete Shoemark and Haynes
Amazon base price: $23.95
Used price: $73.85
Average review score:

Thorough overview
This book is not and does not try to be a shop manual. What it is, is a well-done primer on the theory behind the various systems in a motorcycle. The chapter on engines was fascinating to me. It explains, in rough historical/chronological order, the development of various engine designs, and how each was a reponse to weaknesses in previous designs and how each one introduced it own problems (while at the same time older designs were tweaked in various ways to minimize problems). The design variations include number of cyllinders, number of crankshafts, orientation of cyllinders with respect to each other, orientation of the crankshaft with respect to the motorcycle, ratio of bore diameter to stroke length, various arrangements of valve trains, etc. Two stroke engines are also covered. Illustrations are extensive, but tend to be pulled from other books or from manufacturers manuals, so sometimes include unnecessary detail, especially in the carburation chapter (which was very complex and a little over my head). Some chapters (e.g., exhaust systems) were not as detailed as the engine chapter and were slightly disappointing.

I followed this book up with Keith Cameron's Sportbike Performance Hankbook, which explains some systems in more detail. Cameron's book is ostensibly a book for souping up your motorcycle, but in the end managed to convince me that I want to keep my bike stock unless I don't plan to use it on the street: the manufacturers generally know what they are doing.

One caveat about Motorcycle Basics Manual: the book was authored in England and uses U.K. terminology. A glossary at the end gives U.S. equivalents, but a few things are left out.

Perfect Books for the Basics
Aside from the occasional spelling differences (tyre instead of tire, etc.) this serves as the perfect introduction to the inner workings of your bike. It's not too complicated, nor does it treat its readers as idiots; rather it's a great blend of information and photos that allow you to learn the core ideas behind the metal and plastic. What I really liked was the build up of old to new styles of all the various systems it covers. As the title plainly states this is a basics book, and it won't get you to the point of being a mechanic, but after reading this you should be able to begin a study of motorcycle repair without a problem. This is money worth spending if you aren't already educated about engine systems.

C'mon girls, it's time to get down and dirty!

I'm a young(ish) woman who is absolutely new to the world of motorcycles. I bought this book from Amazon after reading through the posted reviews, and am pleased to say that it was an excellent purchase.

I really don't have anything to compare this book to, but I can say that it has been a wonderful introduction to the nuts and bolts of motorcycles. I never really understood what constituted an engine before picking up this book, but now I can talk intelligently on many mechanical matters with my grease-monkey mates. It's also a great reference when you're struck by a killer question about the intricacies of gear shifting, or whatever.

The book's only drawback, from my point of view, is that the text is rather dense, which makes it slightly daunting to sit down with. All in all though, my thanks and congratulations go out to the author.
