Another strong entrant in the "Original" series, with Bluemel's usual thorough research, beautiful and detailed photography and useful technical info for each model. This book covers the golden era of Ferrari's road cars. Impatiently waiting for the second V-12 book.

Wonderful Book !
As a Ferrari fan,I collect and read many books about Ferrari. This is one of the books that I feel I have got a lot of knowledge. There are more than 220 color photographs and detail introduction about the every car's chassis,transmission,wheel...etc.This book keep the same class of the other one:"Ferrari V8". More than a tech manual is this book.
Being involved with computers for over 15 years now, I have learned that there is always something new to learn. Everyday this industry changes and keeping up it can and is a full time job. The book is written by someone with over 35 year experience and the material covered is nothing short of great.

When I started reading this book I thought is was another text for the A+ Exam, and while you could use it as a study tool, the book is more in line for the technician. What the book covers is hardware mostly, from the motherboard through printers and everything in between.

There is coverage of C3 and Itanium processors, binary conversions, AT Commands, video and monitors and so much more. Ron Glister has given you a real reference manual and a great addition to my technical library.

The text is technically and material wise up to date with the latest information. Also there is a cd included with a host of utilities, most of which a trialware or shareware. About everyone should find a few of them useful in some way and overall if you are serious about fixing and repairing than you have a first rate source to work with.

Excellent Book
Agreeing with the previous review 100%. This is an excellent book, and I can lift it over my head, so it won't be such a pain in the butt to drag around with me. At around 800 pages, it's still a hefty reference, but a little more manageable than some of the bigger books out there. The language is plain. The organization is sensible, and I appreciate the many genericized diagrams in addition to photos. Photos are nice, but the diagrams make it easier for me to figure out what I'm looking at from machine to machine. I wish more hardware books were put together like this one.

Gilster is the Greatest!
This is the second book by Ron Gilster I have used to learn more about computers. I thought at first I may have made a mistake with this book in that it may be too advanced for me, but that was not the case, for the most part. My husband, who works in computing, says that this book covers all of the basic problems a repair technician would need help with, which is what worried me, since I am not a technician by any stretch of the imagination. I am an office manager stuck with the job of supporting our computer network. The background and explanation of how things work and why they can go awry is very helpful to me in understanding what a problem may be, how to explain it to the serviceperson, and in knowing if the right things are being fixed.

Thanks, Mr. Gilster. I am a devoted fan!

Excellent book
Having bought a piano - way out of tune - and being interested in knowing how things work, I found this a fascinating book. The author seems to have managed to put several lifetime's wisdom into one easily readable volume.

But don't kid yourself that one quick read will make you an expert piano tuner - "there is no better way to improving your tuning efficiency than to tune several different pianos a day, five or six days a week" is one of the author's tips.

After several days of work [plus the aid of an electronic frequency meter accurate to 1 in 10**6], I have improved my piano somewhat but it is still way off what a professional tuner would achieve in a couple of hours.

With the help of this book, my piano is working again!
I had a dead key on my piano and one that is often played. I didn't want to pay a specialist for such a small repair so i bought this book here. And it worked! In less than one hour, i found the right chapters, learn how to remove the action bridge, repair my key, rebuild the whole thing and gazoo! It plays as new. Now, I can't wait to do the tuning myself. I won't pay for no more overpriced technician.

An encyclopedic treatise on all aspects of piano repair
An excellent authoritative source on repairing pianos - from simple tuning and cleaning to complete ground-up restoration. Written in clear, easy to read prose with hundreds of illustrations and diagrams. Has enough detailed theory to help the reader readily understand the reasons behind the repairs.

Pump and Circumstance: Glory Days of the Gas Station
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Company (July, 2000)
Authors: John Margolies and Sk
Amazon base price: $18.95
Used price: $24.95

An Icon and Institution
This is one of two books written by Margolies which I have just re-read. (The other is Ticket to Paradise.) Regrettably, copies of both are now difficult to obtain but well-worth the effort. Each focuses on what may seem to be a highly specialized subject. In fact, both offer a wealth of information and commentary concerning a basic component within the development of U.S. culture. This volume focuses on the "glory days of the gas station." At least some readers of this review recall traveling across the country decades ago and pulling over where they could fill up their vehicle's gas tank. For many summers, I drove from Chicago to Los Angeles along Route 66 and stopped at several of the locations featured in this book. I have forgotten when but, at some point, the filling station became a service station. Upon arrival, an eager stranger appeared to fill up the tank, check the oil and tire pressure, wash the windows, and encourage me to purchase a canvas bag filled with water in the event the summer heat depleted the water in the radiator. One attendant who resembled Gabby Hayes noted that I might also need extra water "if this thing of yours breaks down in the middle of nowhere."

Margolies organizes his material within five chapters: Pump and Circumstance (signage); Pioneer Days (road maps); Golden Age: 1920-1940 (Pop Architecture, Aircraft, Razzmatazz: Kid Stuff, Believe it or Not!, Razzmatazz: That's Entertainment!, and Deco Moderne); "Going, Going...: 1940-1965 (Razzmatazz: Postwar Frolics, Porcelain Enamel, restrooms, and Razzmatazz: The Best of the Best; and Back to the Future: 1965-1990. The book is filled with superb illustrations (the best of which being archival photographs) and the text is based on a wealth of primary sources. Chapter 3 was especially interesting to me because it examines (with some of the best graphics in the book) various gas station architectures which include the Gulf Lighthouse Service Station (Miami Beach, FL), windmill-shaped buildings (Saint Cloud, MN), shell-shaped Shell gas stations (Winston-Salem, NC), the B-17 "Bomber Gas Station" (the plane installed above the pumps in Milwaukee, WI), "Bob's Airmail Service Station" built around a 32-passenger Fokker plane (Los Angeles, CA), and a zepplin-shaped building grounded beside the Pennzoil pumps (near Pittsburgh, PA). Photographs of most of these facilities are included, accompanied by brief but informative commentaries.

I highly recommend this book (as well as Ticket to Paradise) to those who share my interest in icons such as the gas station. Its evolution has been inextricably involved in the cultural history of the United States.

PUMPS, PETROL, PROMOS AND PIZAZZ
Margolies has done his homework. In addition to a good written history of the "filling station," he has come up with photos and postcards depicting all aspects of delivering gasoline to your hungry tank. Following are just a few:

A station shaped like a red and white teapot, complete with pouring spout, in Zillah, Washington, built in 1922.

A 50 foot high tepee shaped gas station from Lawrence, Kansas, built in 1930

A station with a roof shaped like a red cowboy hat with a 50 foot wide brim, and restrooms in a structure shaped like a pair of cowboy boots, in Seattle, Washington, built just after World War II.

A station utilizing an actual B-17 Bomber overhanging the gas pumps from Milwaukie (sic), Oregon, again built just after World War II.

A flying saucer service station from Ashtabula, Ohio, built in 1966.

There are lighthouses, windmills, giant soda bottles, icebergs, and a myriad of other shapes and styles including art-deco, ceramic tile, cape cod, and just plain wooden sheds and concrete blocks.

The book includes a written history of filling stations from tanks atop horse-drawn carts to today's stations. Every kind of pump from hand cranked to coin operated to visible level to today's 24 hour automated pump are displayed and discussed. There are men's and women's uniforms, and there are advertising slogans, signs, very artistic give-away road maps, and even a discussion of the evolution of "the clean restroom" as an advertising feature.

We live in the era of the automobile, and PUMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE is, in addition to being brainfood for the nostalgia buff in all of us, a history of that still unfolding era.

This is the kind of coffee table book that any over 30 guest in your home will be drawn to and, pointing at some illustration, say, "Hey, I remember those."

A nostalgic look in the rear-view mirror
This handsome book arouses my nostalgia for the good old days of motoring both visually and educationally. Besides tracing the evolution of gas-station architecture, gas pumps themselves, and petrol merchandising, the book displays top-quality photo reproduction. This is especially to be appreciated for the way it shows the details in the older pictures, which were made in the days of slow, fine-grain films. And the book's generous page size helps the photos stand out, too. There's a good bibliography to further stoke the nostalgia.

Best of it's kind
After searching for books in this subject, I was very pleased to finally find a book that went into the depth of not only restoring, but plane and other tool usage. This book was intended for the antique tool collector who chooses to use their tools not place them on a display shelf and accept them "as is." If you are looking for old tools needing repair for many more years of use, then this is the book for you. Michael Dunbar has done an excellent job putting his knowledge on paper for the reader's benefit.

THE Manual for refurbishing tools
Dunbar's book is one of the best when it comes to repairing just about any antique tool. He patiently and thoroughly describes how to repair most any hand tools you'll come across. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn how to restore antique hand tools. It should be noted that Dunbar now uses a different method to sharpen plane and chisel irons, etc. However, this is widely available in magazines. Highly recommended.

Ideal for experts or beginners alike.
I only recieved this book this morning, I began reading and can now thouroughly recommend this book to anyone who, for example has ever seen Norm Abram at work and thought 'Hey that's not fair. He's got $10,000 worth of power tools at least' Well this has to be the guide for those who wish to find, restore, and use old tools. I grew up with quality handtools around me and can tell this guy knows what he's talking about. The majority of this book is dedicated to planes - but I never realised just how many kinds there are! A must for anyone you know who heads for the 'rusty tool box' at flea markets and yard sales. I'd love to know what you think about this book too. Happy reading!

five years equals five stars
I cannot tell a lie. Along with Michael Badham, I wrote SAILORS' SECRETS. Aside from learning the tricky placement of the apostrophe (for "sailors'" to make it plural) in the title, the toughest part was "what to put in and what to leave out" after five years. We went after under-known gems of wisdom and expertise from sailors who had been there. We got them, by the boatload. It's a bit hard to use the index and/or the table of contents diasl up a particular reference. Maybe that's because, after five years of interviewing sailors, assembling biographies, doing illustrations, collecting permissions, and organizing the work into "commandments," for the average guy, I (we) found it hard to pour still more time into refining and cross-referencing our opus. Other than that , however, SAILORS'SECRETS has stood the test of thousands of readers and the passage of another five years with superior results and reviews. Trendy as sailing can be, our book hits the basics of racing, cruising and boat owning that aren't likely to go out of date.

Excellent tips for novice or experienced sailor
I thought I knew a lot about sailing but this book is so jam packed with good ideas and tips that I've read it from cover to cover. The style is simple and the range of ideas comprehensive. If you have a sailor in your life, this is an excellent present.

GREAT for the inquiring sailor
This book povided us with many helpful sujestions and ideas on various subjects. It is great for the new-commer to sailing AND the experianced sailor. Recomended to anyone who is willing to improve!

A goldmine of hard-to-find engineering data!
Dennis Moore has really done his homework on this and it's companion book on big block performance. The kind of detailed information provided in each of his books is very hard to find, and Dennis explains the performance significance of each step of the engine's assembly. I've been a professional engine builder for many years, and I'll definitely read these one more than once! A must-have for the marine small-block owner/builder.

Well worth your investment!
Since I now have my own copy, I can tell the world that this book is well underpriced!! The content of this book is so well written, easy to read, and chocked full of "experience and information", that it is easily worth more than three times what it sells for!

By having this book, I now feel that I have the confidance to build my own "hot engine", knowing I have the expertise of Dennis Moore (the author)looking over my shoulder as I build it!

Definately a must have!!

The straight story on marine engines.
Dennis Moore has put together a clear, concise and very complete guide to building up a marine performance engine. Whether you plan to put together a very high performance motor or just make improvements to your stock motor, this book has the bases covered.

He has clear descriptions on the differences between automotive and marine engines, and details which components work best for the marine powerplant and why.

The background information he provides clears up many myths and also details how certain common practices came about and why they should or should not have a place in building up a small block.

The material is well organized and easy to navigate through.

I am currently bulding up a 350 for my boat, and this book has given me all the information I need to make the correct choices on parts and talk intelligently with the machine shops.

Very good book.
Mostly oriented for the Suzuki Samurai, this book covers almost everything about the Samurai Machenics, and explains it on simply and easy way to follow.

Great on motor poor on the rest of drivetrain
The manual goes into the motor well. It is easy to follow. The photos are pretty poor though. It really lacks information on tranfer cases and differentials. if you are only going to remove the components and replace them it is fine, but thats is far as it goes.

why some ships sink
Readers seeking spine-tingling narratives of sea disasters will be disappointed with Tall Ships Down, because this brilliant book is instead a penetrating analysis of the circumstances of loss of several traditional sail ships in recent times. In five lucid essays, the author uses each sinking to illuminate the intersection of changes in nautical technological traditions, situational decision-making, and construction of sailing heritage. Beyond sailors or maritime buffs, this superbly written work should capture anyone interested in the sociology of technological change. The author is thoughtful and engaging, with his experience as captain of large traditional sail ships only one source of the book's extraordinary insights. Tall Ships Down will take its place as a classic alongside technology and culture studies such as Hilton's Eastland: Legacy of the Titanic. I'd consider it a shame if the author does not give us next a full-length treatment of the sinking of the Pamir, or a biography of Alan Villiers.

A Great Read
This book is a great read for both professional mariners and armchair sailors alike. Professionals will appreciate the insight into these disasters and their causes, while the armchair sailor will find the sea stories fascinating enough to keep their interest. The author's writing style is easy to read, and his research is fairly extensive. All in all an outstanding book that deserves a place in any nautical library.

A Must-Read for Professional Sailors
This book is an outstanding study of five sail training vessel accidents. It is not only interesting, but full of important lessons for all sailors, particularly for professional sailors of traditional vessels. Captain Parrott has done the sailing world a great service by analysing these tragedies, not with romance or melodrama, but with compassion and empathy.
