great book
I never built a building before, I did help build a deck.
I bought this book to build a small music studio (16'x24')
and it was easy to read. It had everything I needed in it to build the building and the project came out great. After reading this book you will think it is easy to build small buildings.

How to Build Small Barns & Outbuildings
This is a great general building reference book. I pull it out whenever I'm starting something new or if I want a refresher. This book has helpful detailed information on all phases of building design and construction. This includes: 1. Foundation design layout and pouring for slabs, piers, & footings of all sorts; 2. Framing design & construction-- whether pole or platform framing, roof trusses or rafters; 3. Siding & roofing options, design & construction details for each; 4. Wiring details from power to the service panel to switches, lighting and outlets; 5.Plumbing from the well to the septic leach field.

It also has over 20 plans for various buildings ranging from pole barns and equipment sheds to guest houses, garages and studios. I have built several sheds from plans in this book and plan to build more.

Excellent Building Guide
I was interested in learning how to build a outdoor storage/workshop building. This book gave me a great foundation. With it's acurate how to list, materials and dimensions, it give confidence to all do it yourselfers. I felt that the step by step from supplies to completion really proved invaluable. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in building their own buildings. I look forward to trying out the next design, a green house/garden shed. I feel this book should be apart of all libraries.

A Must Have
This book was by far the most valuable one I purchased while I was car hunting. I would reccommend it to anyone who has either no experience or overwhelming exeperience with buying cars, and to read it before they buy their next one. A little dated, but a short read with nothing but the facts you need.

What an eye opener!!!
My sister bought this book and saved several hundred dollars at a dealership in Canada and then suggested I buy this book. I bought a Saturn, no haggling, BUT I did learn A LOT about buying a car. There were a few things that I was able to save money on even though it was a Saturn. I have suggested this book to a clerk at Geico and even the person I am dealing with by e-mail in the Customer service dept. at SATURN. The book answers a lot of common sense questions and lets you know about things I NEVER would have thought to ask about. If you are going to buy a car...buy this book first and study it!!!

Excellent resource! Saved me hundreds of dollars. I lent it
This is an excellent book - very easy to read and understand. I was amazed at the tricks that salesmen pull and found the advice very helpful. I lent this book to a friend buying a new car and he saved $200 off what he thought was going to be his best deal.

how to keep your sanity alive
This book makes it easy even if you have no clue about any beetle. Just follow Johns advice and do as he says exactly the way he says it.

best technical book ever written
The beauty of this book is that it includes the amateur auto repairer in the picture. Using this book and with a minimum of assistance from fellow VW enthusiasts I have rebuilt VW engines three times, coming from a background of zero experience. The approach relates very strongly to that of R.M.Pirsig's "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance". Do not be afraid! You too can fix your VW.

Very good book
I have an older edition of this book; it's easy to read, well illustrated, sometimes amusing and fairly complete. I can't understand why the publisher hasn't kept it in print, they have a new edition of their book for air cooled VW's but most VW's for the past 20 years have been water cooled. I just hope they're working on a new edition.

dinghy fun
This book is written in a way that is very funny and very informative in the area of inflatable boats. It answers almost all questions that may enter ones mind about inflatable boat ownership and such things as handling, maintaining and repairing one. Even without owning an inflatable, it is still funny and good reading. Danger; Not owning an inflatable boat of any kind and reading this book makes you want to go and buy one.

You will laugh and learn!
The book is filled with good humor, and contains a lot of useful information. Intended for the average person, the book will answer basic questions regarding inflatables that you may have. It will ease your decision on buying the boat, outboard and some of the extras available. I'd say that if you have no previous experience with inflatables, this book will be a great reading experience. At the end of the book, it even lists a lot of the manufacturers of inflatables and their addresses. I'd say this book is worth every single penny.

A useful reference in a very readable format.
This book contains a wealth of information on all aspects of inflatables. The emphasis is on inflatable boats but inflatable kayaks are also mentioned. The author includes many infomative and often humorous anecdotes throughout. Specific information is included topics such as patching, engine selection, and accessory selection. The book contains no color pictures, but does have many useful charts and diagrams

Fantastic, a true home reference book
This book is fantastic. It provides guidance on just about every home/housekeeping problem, from how to fold a fitted sheet to how to remove smoke odors from a room to how to restore wood furniture and paint a room. It makes practical recommendations (like purchasing cleaning products from a janitorial supply company) and is very easy to read. I recently purchased another housekeeping reference book, Home Comforts, and was disappointed because, in my opinion, there was no way I could meet all the expectations discussed in the book for keeping my house clean. Mary Ellen's book, on the other hand, is very realistic and makes suggestions that anyone can accomplish --how to maintain your house without constantly doing housework. It even has a whole chapter of recommendations on how to quickly prepare your home to sell it. I plan to send this book to people as a housewarming present.

A book everyone needs!
This is truly an encyclopedic collection of housekeeping hints. Mary Ellen Pinkham has done her research. If you love to read, then most likely you don't want to spend hours just cleaning your home. Once you learn some of her quick and easy solutions to everyday problems, you will have more time to spend on yourself.

While I use just a few basic cleaners, you will find oodles of specific cleaning hints and tips. You will also be warned not to mix chlorine cleaning products with baking soda. I was surprised to find information on refinishing furniture, saving time, saving energy and saving money. Those are things we could all learn whether we like to clean or not.

I would recommend this for a new bride, for your own reference library, or as a gift for your friends who are interested in having all the answers to their questions in one convenient book.

Tremendous resource!
I received this book as a wedding gift, and have found it to be an invaluable reference tool in my life as a homemaker. Any question about how to clean ANYTHING can be answered with this book. The author includes recipes for homemade cleaning solutions that REALLY work, as well as tips for "frugal" living and ecological conservation. Illustrated drawings help teach how to "fix" things that the husband keeps promising he will and never seems to get around to doing. Everyone should have a copy of this book in their home!

Australian and South African Ford Telstar, Mazda 626
I searched everywhere for a repair manual for my Ford Telstar (Mazda626 clone). The book was particularly well suited to my purposes, as it described repair procedures in detail. As cars are more technologically advanced than before, I learnt a great deal and discovered features which I never knew existed on my car. The Fuel Injection section was particularly interesting to me. You learn exactly what not to mess with.

must have for a probe owner
This book is a must have for any 2nd generation ford probe owner. It has saved me a fortune on repair costs. well worth the price lots of pictures better than the chiltons manual.

Mazda/Probe Haynes Manual
The Haynes manualfor the Mazda/Probe vehicle is as easy to use as other Haynes manuals I have purchased for other cars I have owned. Pictures are of good quality and the instructions are somewhat detailed. I would defintely recommend a Haynes manual for any car.

Michael Meyers' A+ Certification

If you have some book knowledge, a PC to dissect, and a lack of actual experience in cracking cases open, the A+ Certification Lab Manual will do everything but remove the floppy drives for you as it cheerfully walks you through your PC's guts. Guided walk-throughs, backed up with clear explanations and a more-than-generous dollop of real-world experience, make this a book that's perfect for beginners and intermediates. It won't get you through the test by itself, but it will definitely serve as a top-notch supplement for book-learners who are trying to expand their knowledge.

The Lab Manual is a series of 20 walk-through sections (there are 50 walk-throughs total, but they're grouped by category) that require some basic hardware knowledge. They focus on giving the reader a working knowledge of how the parts fit into the computer, how to put them together, and the common things that go wrong in the real world. So, while the hard-drive section doesn't go into great depth on the meaning of sectors and cylinders, it does have you identify and remove a hard drive, shows you how to configure the CMOS so that it recognizes a drive both manually and automatically, then shows you how to put it back in without a hitch. (It also covers formatting and partitioning.) This book serves as a nice yin to the yang you'll get with most A+ guides, giving you hands-on information that fleshes out your theoretical knowledge. After all, you can read all about cylinders and sectors, but what's ultimately going to be more useful--knowing what the cylinders mean, or being able to install a hard drive so that the computer recognizes it?

It's not until you actually read the walk-throughs in this book that you realize how perfunctory the exercises in other books are. Meyers spends a lot of time walking you through common mistakes that techs make, as well as giving handy tips for when things don't quite go right. (Can't determine which power pins to connect the on/off button to? Hook up the power supply and touch the connectors with a screwdriver tip until the fan whirs!) The depth and insight granted here are both rewarding and a pleasure to read, and, when you're finished, you should be able to vivisect and reassemble a test PC with little trouble.

However, one does wish that someone had told Meyers that a picture is worth a thousand words. It's frustrating to have a half a page's worth of writing on what an ISA slot and an ISA card look like without a single picture; particularly in the early hardware sections, this verges on the hair-tearing. And the pictures that are there are poorly laid out and in some cases blurry. Rather than a large picture with a tiny circle indicating what a fan clip looks like and how to remove it, wouldn't it be better to print a close-up of the clip so that we can see what the tech is actually doing?

Another slight problem with the book is its focus. To be fair, it really goes into some depth in the early and most heavily tested sections--the indispensable hardware parts like the processor, the motherboard, and the hard and floppy drives. And that is the stuff that the bulk of the A+ exam is about. But near the end of the book, the walk-throughs for the sections worth 5 percent of your total A+ score become almost exasperatingly short; the "Network" section only touches on wire and doesn't cover installing a network interface card at all. Likewise, the "Portable PCs" chapter, weighing in at all of three pages, doesn't even go through the basics of installing and removing a PCMCIA card from a laptop.

The third and final problem with the Lab Manual isn't really a problem at all, but could be viewed as such by some readers: it is not a reference guide. Commonly tested topics like the lists of hexadecimal memory addresses and the differences between the various processors aren't mentioned except in passing; if this is the only guide you buy, you are certain to fail.

But that isn't the point. What this book does do is meld the theoretical knowledge you've gained from whatever A+ reference you've used with the hands-on experience you'll need in the field. Using this in conjunction with a solid theoretical book will weld the knowledge into your head forever, reinforcing what you've already learned via endless lists and paragraphs into solid, screwdriver-twisting experience. You could pass the exam without this book...but it would be a heck of a lot harder. Recommended. --William Steinmetz

Mike Meyers is my new A+ guru!
I'm using Mike's book to study for my A+ exams, and I have found it to be very clear and easy to understand. I also picked up a copy of this lab manual, because it helps me to understand if I can actually try things. This book has been a great addition to my studying, and I think will make me a better tech. The labs are real-world things that you might really need to do as a tech, and you get practical tips - stuff an experienced tech might tell you if they were looking over your shoulder. I'm thinking of doing Net+ as well, and I'll definitely be checking out the Meyers book for that exam too!

The perfect companion to the book!!!!!
Mike Meyers is one of the most respected people in the computer certification arena. His 3rd edition A+ book is a huge success and the follow-up lab manual is sure be just as successful.

First thing I noticed was the over 50 labs included in the book, making this the perfect companion to his book. Also I noticed that the labs are tailored made for the classroom environment and can be adapted tot eh self study mode with little headaches.

Each lab has step by step instructions that make it easy to follow along. Labs cover components, motherboards, CPUs, RAM, Bios, busses, storage, DOS, Windows 9.X, 2000, although I think NT Should have been included, sound cards, modems, video, laptops, printers and networking.

The coverage of each exam objective is what impressed me the most. Overall this is a must have for those wanting to obtain the certification the first time around.

See how the experts get it done
This is one of the best books out there on the market. Its compact size means it is easier to find information and you can take it anywhere.

The exercises are practical (real ones that you might perform) ones and theri are clear detailed pictures. Although the pictures are not colorful they are still clear and effective. The layout is easy to follow as well. All operations are outlined in easy to follow steps.

Although this book explains some of the concepts that are used in the repairs and instlallations, this book does refer to the hardcover book so if you dont have the full edition then some computing knowledge is required to understand what the author is talking about.

All in all this is a very good book in showing you how the experts do their job.

The Top Of The Heap
This book is the best cabling book on the market and totally user friendly. The text is clearly stated for those who have limited experience with cabling and the illustrations expertly drawn. This is a book for anyone who wants to learn how to cable and the best products to buy for your installation.

Excellent resource, how to, and text book.
As someone who has been involved in the Voice and Data cabling industry since the late 70's, I was pleased to find a comprehensive and easy to comprehend book devoted to the subject. I have used this text as a training manual as well as a "how to" manual for my technicians. Some technologies and technologies covered in this text are dated. That does not mean that they are not found in the real world. This text is a wonderful resource when the techs encounter legacy networks. There is a wonderful chapter just devoted to troubleshooting "thinnet" cabling and I'm told that there are still questions concerning Arcnet on networking exams. As an authorised instructor for NACSE and a community college, I use this book as the text book in my courses.

A MUST HAVE book for every IS manager's library!
If you are an Info Systems manager, construction foreman, network installer, or just interested in network wiring, this is the book for you!

Neatly organized into 16 logical chapters, this book will explain EXACTLY what is required to install network cabling. It starts out describing the network topologies, including older topologies still in use today. Do you have a legacy system, this book will help you too!

The book moves on to installation project management and continues to techniques and strategies for ACTUAL network cabling installation. Well illustrated throughout the book with details never before found in any book.

The book continues on with troubleshooting legacy and current network cabling. As many of you may know, Harry Newton (the famed telecom guru) says if you have network troubles, always check the cabling first!

The book ends with RFP (Request for Proposal) examples and details on how to read or create one. If you ever pondered what it would take to recable your office, this book is a definate must for you.

Equipment and tool information is presented throughout this book, and the illustrations are hand drawn by the author. The best thing about them is that they detail better than any photograph ever could.

I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is the best book of its kind and I also recommend the sister companion to this book, Mike's Basic Guide to Cabling Computers and Telephones in Homes and Apartments.

absolutely essential tool!
great explanations with excellent sense of humor!! A MUST for the novice vintage mechanic or to attempt to understand how almost anything works.

Excellent book on electrical theory
"Motorcycle Electrics Without Pain" is the only book I've ever read that actually explained the electronic on my bike in a way I could understand, and the book didn't even cover my model. I highly recommend that anyone who is trying to troubleshoot their own electrical problems buy and read this book.

No pain and quite a few chuckles...
I bought my first copy of Mike Arman's book some time in the mid 80s. I wore it out. Then I bought another. That got a bit frayed too. The third copy is, like Laura Whatsername, "wrapped in plastic"...to keep my greasy fingerprints off it. Let me tell you what I do...I write stuff - including technical stuff - for motorcycle magazines here in Oztralia. For me to do this work successfully I need rather a lot of reference material. Putting it as bluntly as I can, Mike Arman's book is simply the best guide to motorcycle circuit maintenance one can buy. If you want to go into the intricacies of 3-D ingnition mapping or integrated circuit design, look elsewhere, but if you want to know how to rewire your machine so it doesn't stall every time it looks like rain, or so the lights work after dark - two unsolvable mysteries to the owners of Italian machinery - then Mike's your man. Time for me to testify... An acquaintance of mine was having trouble with the standard wiring loom on his Honda 400cc four-cylinder machine. He decided to rewire the bike using Motorcycle Electrics Without Pain as a guide. He used only the existing wiring loom on the machine for materials and ended the exercise with 40 metres of wire left over. And everything worked. On that basis alone, the book's a bargain. As well, it's written in a no-nonsense, entertaining style which is bound to raise the odd chortle here and there as Mike explains the way things electrical work in the real world of motorcycles as opposed to the way electrical theorists would have us believe they work. And it's especially applicable and entertaining for anyone who has had any dealings at all with the electrical work of the company founded by Joseph Lucas, the Prince Of Darkness. Sincerely, I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone considering looking into the arcane art of motorcycle electrickery. And it's a damn good read as well.
