Macroeconomics? This is the book... and forget the rest.

I used many of Dr. Carson's books in college, and found them to be great for getting a good understanding of the issues. He usually had an overview the issues and both sides of the argument explained. I threw out alot of my college textbooks but kept all of his books. Only issue is the argments in the book may become dated so try to get the latest editions.

This is one of the best "Introduction to Macroeconomics" books I've ever read. It's well structured, comprehensive and understandable. It also explains the mathematical and analytical framework of the theories introduced in the book very well.

This was the most enjoyable and interesting book on economics I ever read during my Economics undergraduate studies at University of Toronto. I recommend this book highly. Even if you are not an eco major, you should read it too as it teaches you macro economics in a fun way. It is a tragic that his main author Professor Rudi Dornbursch passed away. He knew how to seduce readers to enjoy and learn economics. Read this book if you want to learn macro economics, it is just the BEST!!!

I've read almost all macro textbooks since my undergraduate and postgraduate studies some ten years ago. Farmer's is the BEST in my view. The most important achievement of this book is that it bridges the gap between the static macroeconomics taught at the undergraduate level and the dynamic macroeconomics taught at the postgraduate level. I myself found it rather difficult to jump from one level to the next when I first began my postgraduate study. If I had the opportunity to learn from Farmer's, I would have found it much easier to pick up advanced macro. There are many other nice features in this book as well. I like the introductory chapters on the use and interpretation of macro data. As a practicing researcher now, I find them extremely helpful. As I read through this book, I don't have the usual feeling that the subject matters are far away from the real world. The flow of topics is also pedagogically sound, starting from classical theories, then to "modern" theories, and finally ending at dynamic macro. The exposition is clear, and the whole text is extremely well-written and highly readable. Farmer has the ability to keep the readers' attention, and stay focus on the important ideas. This is a terrific piece! Highly recommended.

If you are looking for a regular textbook about macroeconomics you should avoid this book. Chances are that you'll fail in your exams. However, if you are looking for a surprisingly fresh, though sometimes too idiosyncratic, view on the subject, this book is a must have. Indeed, most of the current heterodox macroeconomics (including old and post keynesian macroeconomics but not only)is based on Godley and Cripps's approach. Of course, the work of Tobin is as important as Godley's and probably had influenced him by that time (though you won't see references in the book). The "flair" of the current stream of the stock-flow consistent macroeconomic literature can be traced all the way back to Godley's book, though. So, if you are disappointed with the dismal current state of affairs of the so called "macroeconomic theory", give Godley a try.

Auerbach and Kotlikoff did a great job! I knew absolutely nothing about macroecnomics before and thought this discipline is totally above and beyond me. An accidental curiosity drove me to pick up this book. BAM! The book and I clicked! Auerbach and Kotlikoff integrated bisic principles of the macroecomics into their original life-model, make them very easy to digest! Besides, the writing style is succint and clear. The language is never complicated and alienating, because the authors aim at conveying some real princles of macroecomics, not showing off their linguistic sophistication! What I appreciate most is three things:

1. The book cites numerous tables and charts that help me understand the texts better .(although the texts are already very well written.)

2. At the end of each chapter, there is a chapter summary. I appreciate the authors' effort to keep the readers' interests in mind! I find this feature very helpful. It saves me the trouble of writing my own summary. ( I have this habit.)

3. A great number of case studies illustrate the theories meaningfully.

In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in macroeconomics!

Simply excellent. It provided adequate theory behind each of the experiments while explaining the experiments' procedures step by step.
