A master historian richly paints life in 18th-century France
French historian Daniel Roche meticulously researches the everyday material culture of eighteenth-century France to create a subtle and nuanced picture of the lives of everyday people of the period. By examining developments such as plumbing and lighting in various urban and rural sections of France, Roche provides the reader with a way to approach history in a more intimate and empathetic manner. This is not a book for someone seeking a general history of 18th-century France, but for the reader who wants to get a detailed picture of daily life during this period, it is indispensible.

Couldn't put it down! A must read! Two huge thumbs up!
Dr. Menchik's provacative writing keep me on the edge of my seat from page one till the heart-wrenching end! The saga of his economic theory combined with the tension of the bitter supply/demand battle provides excitement for everyone from the beginning student in Econ 101 to the tenured professor of economics. I strongly recommend this thrilling tale for anyone interested in a good cost benefit analysis or other great economic theories! I can't wait for the sequels!

fruitful and timely discussion
"Inflation, Unemployment, and Monetary Policy" is one of the most serious problem in the developed countries, especially my country Japan, which is suffering a severe unemployment problem for a long recession. Because of the continuous Government's spending policy. Japanese fiscal situation is deteriorated, so japanese economy's last hope is a monetary poicy. At that time, reading this exciting book and studying excellent opinions of 6 notable economists are truly fruitful. In this book, 6 economists make a poweful and exciting discussion...of course, there is no perfect solution...But, I believe that I can make a firm basis for thinking this severe problem.

great book
This is a very good book that has a mix of economic and anthropology research. The focus is household economics. It has a section on modeling intrahousehold resource allocation, a section, a section on measuring the outcomes of that allocation, and a section on policy analysis. Well worth the money and the time to read!

A must have for students of Keynes' ideas
If you ever tried to read Keynes's General Theory you know pretty well that some of Keynes's main ideas and some of his expositions of these same ideas are pretty confusing. It is well known by now that Keynes was in a hurry to get his book published and this is probably the reason why the GT is so hermetic. Asimakopulos goes a long way in explaining Keynes's ideas or, more precisely, some possible interpretations of these ideas in a simple and convincing manner. He also gives us two most wanted chapters with analysis of the works of two distinguished disciples of Keynes (i.e, Joan Robinson and Roy Harrod) and their attempts to extend his work to a dynamic framework. Of course, Asimakopulos' is not the only interpretation of Keynes'work. There is a whole "Keynes industry" in this world. It is, however, a short, advanced and neatly written piece of work and I consider it a must have especially for those who want a quick start on the topic.

How the economy works
T. C. Powers describes a plausible model of how the American capitalist economy works at the macro level. He then goes on to compare the predictions of the model to actual economic performance data over the last 100 years. The main independent variable in Powers' model is "leakage", which is money paid out (as wages and profits) by the composite producer for production of GNP that is not paid back as consumption of GNP. Powers shows that leakage is the main cause of three major economic woes: slow growth, unemployment and inflation. Powers' model shows _how_ leakage works and how the data confirm the predictions of the model. Powers describes two main sources of leakage: the tight money policies of the Federal Reserve Bank and extreme maldistribution of income. The book makes a convincing case for the importance of looking for ways to plug up the leaks in the economy in order to unleash the full potential of capitalist productivity.
