I found this to be an excellant book for more advanced students (I encouraged mine to read it this past semester). The author gives a splendid explanation of the fundamental economic issues concerning monetary policy and the problems and challenges that plague a dynamic economy.

Economics for Professional Investors
Published in Paperback by Pearson Professional Education (01 April, 1992)
Author: Tim Lee
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Simple, easy to read and spot on
Economics for Professional Investors is one of the best economics texts around. It's much better than all the highly mathematical rubbish that comes out of academics. This is a hands on, do-it-yourself, economics manual by a professional economist who works in the financial markets and knows how to communicate. Lee covers all the ground necessary to understanding how economic policy leads to bull and bear phases in the stock and bond markets. This is the only text I know of which clearly describes how buying and selling of goods and services affects the balance sheets of ordinary people, companies, the banks and the central bank. It's the sort of book that leaves you feeling you've actually learnt something useful. Naturally it's very monetarist. Some will like this. Others will hate it for much the same reason.

Economics simplified for students
Roger LeRoy Miller has improved the quality of Economics today from last year. The book is very resourceful and if used for a class, no student will do poorly in the class. The definitions and data are presented clearly. Economics Today looks at the economy of today and of the past and shows what is beneficial for the economy and what is not. This excellent book has helped me learn all the content and leaning me to consider a major in economics.

Effective and engaging
Has a real knack for conveying complex economic concepts quickly and systematically with little effort. E.g., only a few minutes after reading the Keynesian perspective on fiscal policy I was able to graph and explain how equilibrium changes are affected by government spending. Not having an economics background I find this book remarkable!

Lifesaver!
Take it from someone who hates Economics, this CD is a lifesaver! I had a required Macroeconomics class last semester. As I was afraid of, I was struggling in the class right from the beginning. The prof's only office hours were during times that I had other classes going on, so I couldn't get any extra help from him. I tried a tutor, but his explanations didn't make any more sense the the prof's. Then a friend who'd already taken the class told me about this Cogito Learning Media CD that she had used. I bought a copy and went straight to the topics that I hadn't been able to understand. It made a world of difference! Finally, it was explained to me in a way that was understandable and even interesting. This CD became my best friend during that class. I don't know what I would have done without it!

Equilibrium Analysis
Published in Hardcover by North-Holland (01 September, 1988)
Authors: Werner Hildenbrand and A. P. Kirman
Amazon base price: $105.00
Average review score:

A superb Introduction to Mathematical Economics!
On little less than 300 pages, Hildenbrand and Kirman give an exceptionally deep introduction to equilibrium analysis. The main topics are Walrasian equilibria (optimal choices relative to a price induced budget set), the core (a generalization of the familiar contract curve), and the relationship between the two. Everything is done in an exchange framework (i.e. no production), which makes it easier to focus on the concepts involved.

Kirman and Hildenbrand prove the existence of Walrasian equilibria, give conditions for the core to be non-empty, show how the core of finite economies converges to the Walrasian equilibria and demonstrate the equivalency between Walrasian equilibria and the core in economies with an continuum of traders. In the last chapter they look at the structure of excess demand functions, conditions for uniqueness and stability in respect to tâtonnement dynamics (no trade until equilibrium is reached). Four appendices give essentially all the mathemtical background needed, except for a little calculus and linear algebra needed in the last chapter. A motivating overview of the content is given in an informal introduction.

All results are well discussed and put in the proper context. The authors don't shy away from showing the limitations of the models. They also point out how one can weaken certain assumptions involved.

Equilibrium Versus Understanding: Towards the Rehumanization of Economics As Social Theory (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy, Vol1)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (November, 1995)
Author: Mark Addleson
Amazon base price: $100.00
Collectible price: $184.45
Average review score:

Interpret and understand...it is not all graphs...
This work is only for the bloodthirsty economist (or economics student). Addleson presses for a paradigm shift in understanding and deciphering peoples' motives behind economic decisions. Ultimately, economics remains a social science, and cannot be boxed in by lines and equations. The book reaches me in the same way that Wheatley's New Science work depicts organizational planning. Addleson presents a fundamentally radical view of economics (as emphasized by the Austrian school). He begs us to consider interpreting the social actions of each individual or firm in assessing economic change. If you are looking for a way out of the maze, this book will not necessarily get you out, but it will show you some other paths. Hopefully, you'll know longer be the blind mouse when you are finished
