grandmother's gift a memory book for my grandchild
It is too bad this book is currently not available. I would buy two more books for my friends for baby shower gifts.

My Greatest Gift
I first found this book at the ...in Louisianna. I bought five of them for my five grandchildren. Then I had a sixth. I called the Gibson Co and they said they were out of print. I called ... all over the US to try to find them. I finally found three more. I bought them all. Those eight lasted until now. I have one grandchild who doesn't (or didn't) have one. I have been looking for a book that is similar to my others. I look in gift shops and children's shops and ... finally found one that was OK but not great. It had room for pictures but not for my writing. Then last night in the middle of the night, a thought occurred to me. Just write in Grandma's Gift and let the computer search for me. I could hardly wait to wake up and wait my turn on my husband's computer. As soon as I put in Grandma's Gift, it came up on Amazon.com. I was elated and bought three more. I really don't want to tell the world how wonderful they are because I'm afraid everyone will buy them and I won't be able to get enough for all of my grandchildren because I don't know how many there will be in the future. You must be prepared to do a lot of work and jot memories as you go. It is the greatest gift I will ever give to anyone. I am so grateful to be able to buy three of them today.

A rich family treasure to give to your grandchild.
This book conveys the things one seldom says to their child or grandchild. It encompasses the family history, special stories about the family, and secret thoughts and feelings the grandparent has for their grandchild. It gives the grandchild a perspective and understanding of their grandparent that they may not have known heretofor. A wonderfully rich treasure to be passed on to grandchildren.

The Raw Honest Prayers Needed to Raise a Child Today.
I have no children, yet I seek to pray for the children of the world. Marian Wright Edelman has helped me to do this, more, and better.

Her preface to "Guide My Feet" is worth the purchase price alone. The mini-biography of how her family, faith and community supported her struggles through the black/white segregation in America and how she broke through to become a woman who has brought social reform to our country is a notable portrait indeed. Her collection of prayers are poetic, pensive and will penetrate through our hectic, occupied lives:

"Lord , let me not be so busy working to buy the things that my children want that I cannot give them the time and attention and love they need."

Just before I picked up Edelman's book, I finished reading Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal" (Highly Recommended - see my review). As Marian Edelman worries in every fiber of her being, "about our many children who, lacking a sense of the sacred or internal moral mooring are, trying to grow up in a society without boundaries" and the "relentless cultural messages glamorizing violence, sex, possessions, alcohol, and tobacco", Schlosser will, if you read the books in tandem, show in "Fast Food Nation" that we all need to increase our concern and prayers towards the omnipresence marketing efforts directed daily at our children. Yes, prayer works, but so does responsible parenting. These two books should be read concurrently. As Schlosser notes "the typical American child now spends about twenty-one (21) hours a week watching television - roughly one and a half months of TV every year. About 25% of American Children between the ages of two and five have a TV in their room". Marian Edelman's prayer, "God help us to shut off television and radio and computer and phone so that we can communicate with each other." is timely indeed.

Every month 90% of American children between three and nine visit a McDonald's. Each year fast food chains annually spend more than $3 billion on television advertising directed at children. A taste for fat developed in childhood is difficult to lose as an adult, and obesity is extremely difficult to cure. That said, and noting the above statistic, please remember that over one-quarter of all American children are obese or very overweight (African American children leading this group). Perhaps, besides prayer, we should also use modified Biblical quotes to protect our children; "McDonald's get hence behind me".

The prayers of this book plead with, and petition God (as most prayers do) in a raw, honest way that comes from the heart of a parent who desperately loves her children. The wisdom and prayers found in this book will affect you and hopefully infect you with the same raw honesty needed to raise a child today. Highly recommended.

A guide for all who love and work with children
A delightful and tender book. Filled with affirmations for all of us who feel like we "blew it" today with our kids. Marian's book gives us permission to be human, make mistakes, and still love our children fiercely. It gives us strength to start new tomorrow. I give this book to every new parent and grandparent. My copy is never out of arms reach. An also must is Ms. Edelman's THE MEASURE OF OUR SUCCESS.

Inspiring and heartfelt!
Whenever we move or my boys move to a different classroom, I give a copy of this book as a gift to every teacher and/or caregiver that my boys have had - it shows just how special and precious these people who care for my children are. I keep a copy by my bedside too - it really is a great little book. I wish the spiritual power behind these prayers and poems could stop all the child abuse & neglect in this country. Thank you Marian for a truly wonderful gift!

An inspirational pick-me-up for anyone who loves children!
At a time when I was feeling discouraged about my ministry with children, this book lightened my load. I found prayers, insights, and inspirations that allowed me to attack my work with new-found zeal. As a parent, it helped me find the strength and patience to grow my own children instead of just raising them. To read this book is to grow in love

Really cute, whimsical designs in "I Done My Best!" Several of Ms. White's designs feature really darling angels and are very pleasing. (I like the 4th of July angel.) The author also suggests how you can create & arrange your own designs.
I ordered my copy from Amazon, without whom I would never have discovered this book.
Saundra White, please publish more designs!

There are several web sites on the Net that provide help and techniques in tea-dyeing muslin & linen, so look for those when you get ready to stitch.

Excellent book on primitive stitcheries
If you like primitive stitcheries, you'll love this book. Excellent photos, instructions, and patterns. One of the best I've ever seen.

Hand Stitched Samplers-From"I Done MY Best"

Hank Greenberg, The Story Of My Life
Ira Berkow did a great job writing about Hank Greenberg's life. He has written several books on sport figures. Because of his career as a sport writer and book reviewer I feel he did a nice job with interviewing people and getting information about Hank Greenberg. The book takes a great look at Hank Greenberg life with all his accomplishments. Not only should it be read by every Tiger fan but also every baseball fans in general. Although he missed time through injuries, military service, and early retirement, Greenberg still ranks as one of the most fearsome sluggers in baseball history. The powerful right-hander played only the equivalent of nine and a half seasons, yet produced outstanding career totals as well as exceptional season marks. A native New Yorker, Greenberg was the son of Rumanian born Jewish immigrants who owned a successful cloth shrinking plant. Hank graduated from James Monroe High School in the Bronx, the attended New York University on an athletic scholarship for one semester before beginning his professional baseball career. The 6'4 215 lb. Greenberg's athletic success stemmed from size, strength, and hard work, more than native talent. His high school coach explained: "Hank was so big for his age and so awkward that he became painfully self conscious. The fear of being made to look foolish drove him to practice constantly and, as a result, to overcome his handicaps." Greenberg also took a lot of cruel comments about his religion which made him even a stronger person. He played for the majors from 1933 - 1947 first with the Detroit Tigers and one year with Pittsburgh Pirates. One of the most important decision he had to make was whether to play on a Jewish holiday. He choose not to and that was a very important statement about his heritage. Hank Greenberg retired in 1947 and becomes a smart business man and an excellent Farm Director for the Indians. I feel Hank Greenberg was a success in many things in his life, a truly one of a kind man and a book everyone should read. I applaud Ira Berkow for his commitment to the book.

A great book
This is a great look at Hank Greenberg. It should be required reading for every Tiger fan and baseball fans in general. In addition to providing a look at the life of Hank Greenberg, along the way it chronicles the great Tiger teams of the thirties and forties. However this is more than just a baseball book. Hank discusses his career as a ballplayer/GM/Owner, the challenges of being the first Jewish superstar baseball player, and his decision to give four and a half years of his career to the military. Hank dictated the bulk of this book while sitting by his pool in his final years. Ira Berkow took the tapes, wove in some interviews with friends/family/teammates, and added some old newspaper accounts to create this wonderful book.

OUTSTANDING
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE READ. AN EXCELLENT JOB OF DESCRIBING THE LIFE OF ONE OF GREAT PLAYERS THE GAME HAS SEEN. MR. GREENBERG PUT UP WITH A LOT OF ABUSE AND RIDICULE. BUT HE HANDELED IT WITH AUTHORITY AND GAINED DIGNITY. HIS DESCRIPTION OF THE SIMILARITIES THAT HE AND JACKIE ROBINSON FACED IS VERY INTRIGING. HIS TELLING OF HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH BILL VEECK IS ALSO WELL TOLD AND FASCINATING.
A SMART BUSINESS MAN AND AN EXCELLENT FARM DIRECTOR FOR THE INDIANS SHOW THAT HANK WAS A SUCCESS IN MANY THINGS IN LIFE.
A TRULY ONE OF A KIND MAN AND BOOK.
A MUST READ FOR ANYONE.

A very courageous person
It is amazing to see what kind of atrocities go on in other parts of the world. What's even more of a shock are the institutions put in place to keep the masses oppressed for the benefit of a few. This book opened my eyes to the widespread repercussions of the cold war, and how the US supported tyranous regimes in the name of "defending democracy".

It opened my eyes to the human atroscities in El Salvador
A must read for anyone who is the least bit concerned with human rights--A lesson in the truth vs. what the media provides us. Honestly written--a beautiful book

this book should be read by any person of domestic violence,
this is the best book i have ever read. it is very exicting and uplifting. Maria Tula is one of the most courageous individuals i have read about. being a woman i want to use maria as a model for myself and my future daughters. any one who has experiecned domestic violence should read this book because she expereinced and overcame it. please read and recommend this book to women and men.

Going Places no one Dared!
What great story!... I was taken places no one dare go. As a young person, I never had to deal with war and the faces of war. Like me, the readers will find themselves right in the middle of it war with all it's force, fear and gallantry. Mr. Pinn also reveals an Infantry mans view of histroy and troubled times. For those of you who may be wanting to know more about war, ... you must read this book. Mr. Pinn represents your husbands, your sons and all those who may be called to serve. As fearful as it was it also contained a lot of lighter moments. Funny stories and amazing encounters. A must read!

A must read for those that served, and those that didn't
Once in a while a great man walks into our lives; a man whose very persona is exemplified in his very stare. One such man was Lionel Pinn. Master Sergeant Pinn served in not one, not two, not three, but four different combat areanas. WWII, Korea, Laos and Vietnam saw Mr. Pinn, or Choo-Choo as he was known to many, fight and overcome the enemy. In three different combat theaters Pinny was taken prisoner, and escaped each time. He met and knew Jacki Kennedy, drank whiskey with Ira Hayes-the native American Indian who was one of the infantrymen immortalized in the depiction of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and worked security for Frank Sinatra. Lionel was half Micmac and half Osage Indian, and more importantly an American.

I was fortunate enough to know Lionel, and sat with him at his home on occassion listening to him talk about the weather and the "three old maids" building a house next to his. Never did he discuss his combat missions or time served in the military with me; never did I ask questions. I have known several war veterans, and knew better than to broach the subject--besides, I just enjoyed Lionel's company, and as he remarked in his book, "I don't discuss war with those that never fought. They don't understand."

Oftentimes, I remarked to my wife that I regretted not asking Lionel if I could take a tape recorder with me to interview him. Fortunately for us all a reporter had enough foresight to do that very thing. I recently finished the book published about this little known American icon, Hear the Bugles Calling (My Three Wars as a Combat Infantryman). Lionel was the recipient of three combat infantryman badges, and two silver stars abrazoned the metals on the blue ribbon. Lionel recently died of Leukemia in 1999, the result of being present in Nevada for the witnessing of four atomic bomb detonations.

His is a story for anyone interested in courage. I'm lucky to have called him friend.........

Fantastic Story! Fantastic Book! Fantastic Man!
The story will take the readers on a journey they will not soon forget. Into the battles of three different wars and conflicts as told by a special kind of warrior. Lionel's experiences are breath taking, edge of your seat, and thrilling. Along with an insightful story the reader will be laughing out loud at some of the antics and events the First Sargent gets himself into. Seeing the real war through the eyes of a real soldier is a rare threat. Triple Combat Infantry Badges grace the cover and for those who know, that is a story by itself. I can not recommend this book enough. Frank Sikora's contirbution is well done and in touch with the man and his story. Fantastic story, fantastic book, fantastic man! Little Eagle

Tender Story of a Father & Son Dealing with Alzheimer's
An estranged father and son are brought together by the son's caretaking duty as his father "disappears" into Alzheimer's. Though Alzheimer's brings them together, it also acts as a roadblock to reconciliation. Haugse tracks the vagaries of memory using both words and picture to illustrate the story. The present is intercut with flashbacks of childhood memories of his dad. This unusual book depicts the anguish and love that arises in dealing with Alzheimer's. Though a bittersweet memoir, the book is true to life, insightful and inspiring.

An Affecting Visual Narrative
John Haugse's drawings and narrative are an unusually affecting medium for telling the story of his relationship with his father. Heavy Snow is sure to resonate with anyone who has been estranged from a parent because of lifestyle and career choices, with anyone who has experienced the unsettling role reversal from dependent to caregiver, and especially anyone who has a parent or other loved one suffering from Alzheimer's. While the story is a painful one, it is not without humor and the revelation of the possibilities of enhanced human contact in even this most difficult of situations.

I have given this book to friends who have been comforted and learned from this depiction of a situation similar to their own.

Pictures and words tell a painful but enlightened story.
Not a picture book, not a story board, and not an illustrated novel, but a book like few others in which the artist/author shares his experience by using a rich variety of visual metaphors. A powerful story painful to read and view, but in the end Alzheimer's disease becomes more real. This book will help those whose families are touched by this illness and will aid others' understanding of it.

Combines pastoral warmth and intellectual clarity
In Help My Unbelief, parish priest Fleming Rutledge draws upon her more than twenty-two years of ministerial service to speak directly to readers plagued by doubts and uncertainties about their Christian faith. Her approach combines pastoral warmth and intellectual clarity as she aligns herself with the struggling questioner facing the most penetrating theological challenges of modern times. Highly recommended reading for all Christians regardless of creed or denomination, Help My Unbelief offers satisfying answers for those who must deal with doubt and who strive for a Christian faith within the context and challenges of the world today.

Help[ing] MY unbelief...
C. S. Lewis may finally have a worthy heir, and it is Fleming Rutledge. This collection of sermons by Ms. Rutledge is not just another collection of milk toast inspirational writings, nor is it a dose of fundamentalist hellfire and brimstone. She brings the bible to life !!! The Living Word lives and breathes in her homilies. Whether you are a long time church going christian, a doubting Thomas, or just someone on the outskirts of faith who finds christianity interesting, you will find this book enlightening and insightful. Ms. Rutledge's sermons are not only masterpieces of rhetoric, but they tackle tough biblical passages and tough everyday problems with intelligence, wit, and above all, passion. The title for the book is the title of the first sermon: "Help My Unbelief." It is typical of the other sermons that comprise the book. In "Help My Unbelief," she takes as her scripture Mark 9:14-29 which many believe is the greatest expression of faith in the New Testament. In this passage Jesus returns from the mountain after the transfiguration to find his disciples and others embroiled in a heated argument. Apparently, the disciples have been unable to heal a young boy suffering from what may be epilepsy. The young boy's father is at the end of his rope, totally distraught and desperate. He asks Jesus to heal his son "...if you can." Jesus responds, "all things are possible to him who believes." The exasperated father crys out "I believe, help my unbelief." Then, with a command, Jesus heals the child. Using this passage as her starting point Ms. Rutledge elucidates the heart and core of the christian faith. She discusses doubt, not the kind expressed by philosophers and intellectual unbelievers, but rather the kind experienced by most loyal church going christians, including herself. Not only is doubt normal, but our faith can be stronger if we face such doubt squarely and honestly. This is the prologue to the book. Many other eloquent sermons follow that successfully address the difficulties of faith in the modern world with integrity and compassion. In several sermons, Ms. Rutledge argues against and refutes the freudian notion that christianity, like all "religion," is merely the projection of wishful thinking. Part of her argument is that true christianity is not even a "religion" at all. In fact, God doesn't even like "religion." In this respect God and Freud are in agreement. She identifies with the Swiss theologian Karl Barth and St. Paul regarding the heart of the Gospel, namely, that "Christ died for the ungodly." Her sermons on what this means for social justice and reform are some of the most evangelical, radical, and challenging. She also takes on some of the hardest passages from Romans, I & II Corinthians, and other letters of St. Paul: predestination, christian liberty, justification by faith, good works, and the resurrection of the body are just a few of the topics covered in her sermons. They are all discussed in a way that is easy to understand and relevant for today, while at the same time remaining true to the biblical witness. Ms. Rutledge has done a great service. Like C. S. Lewis, she will help many with their unbelief !!

Words for People Wanting to Believe
In her second book of sermons, Fleming Rutledge weaves contemporary concerns into the Biblical story. She manages to expound scripture while speaking to moral and social concerns. In the process, the book affirms faith while owning the difficulty of believing for many of us. She mixes a clear affirmation of traditional doctrines with a disarming humility that understands the writer's own frailities. She offers substance for the mind and the soul in her preaching.
