Intermediate Level Reading Fun -- A Big Winner!
This wonderful book was one of the most-checked-out titles in my classroom library. I eventually had to get a second and third copy to meet my students' demand for the book. Not since "Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn" has a book turned pre-teens into book worms like "Dear Mrs. Ryan". This is a "Harry Potter" without any of the controversy.

The reasonable length is not as threatening to less avid readers; a big plus at the intermediate level. Good, clean fun for kids. I'm tempted to use this book as a general reader for the entire class. Highly recommeded!*****

Great characters
A really enjoyable book from start to finish. Reminded me of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Kids will love it.

mischievous clean fun back in fashion
Wow! How great to read a book that makes you laugh out loud. You really get inside the head of a young boy and can feel his struggle with trying to not be different, not stand out or be noticed as anything but one of the guys. This book I am buying for all of my grandkids. What a fun movie this would make! I'm waiting in line to see what else this new author Jennifer Jones comes up with.

A wonderful touching book that really hit home for me.
I was given this book as a gift after my daughter became seriously ill. At 6 weeks, my daughter (also named Zoe) was hospitalized for heart failure. While she wasn't premature I could totally relate to what the author was feeling and thinking during those trying times. I'm not even completely finished with the book yet and already I find myself inspired by it.

So much more
True, this book is initially about the birth of a premature grandchild, but it is about so much more. It is about the preciousness of life, no matter how short or long it is. It is an affirmation of life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to look at life thoughtfully and honestly. Mr. DePree writes with painstaking honesty and heartfelt thoughts on prayer, life, death and God. Go out and read the book today!

Thoughtful, touching, poignant
If you have ever had a premature baby or know someone who has, or are just curious about the world behind the plastic walls, this book is a must read. Told from a grandfather's perspective, it is a beautiful account of the passion of a parent to a child and then to her child. A great, hopeful story.

Mary Hunt's Debt Proof Your Kids
This book has some great ideas for how to teach financial responsibility to your kids. It gives you an easy guide that has been used on their children and which really makes sence.

Mary Hunt's Debt-Proof Your Kids --- Do this for your Kids!
This summer I read Mary Hunt's Debt-Proof Your Children. Three months ago we started the salary for all three of my children. Here's the update on our progress with Mary's ideas on Debt-Proof Your Kids.

First of all if you have children READ MARY'S BOOK .. Debt-Proof Your Kids ... this has been the single best thing I've read on preparing your children for financial freedom in their adult life. I was skeptical at first, but am a FIRM BELIEVER! now. It's amazing the attitude towards money my children have now.

My children 15, 12, 10 are to the age where they like to buy Christmas gifts for their friends. This year (when first started on a salary 3 months ago) I told them it would be their responsibility to buy gifts for their friends. They're finished now and there was not even a mention of - Hey Mom how about some extra money. Believe me, this was the case before they were on a salary.

It relieved me of the - Mom can I have this ... they save their money and buy it if they still feel that way. I didn't realize how much more fun shopping can be when you don't have little ones asking for everything!

Everyone is still doing great on their salaries-- my oldest is much more frugal than I would have thought, my middle daugher is still buying more candy than necessary (or LIP GLOSS) but she's still has money saved and is doing well buying her own clothes when she needs them, and my youngest is doing well (even remembering to fill out his own lunch envelopes.)

I thought paying them their money the first of every month instead of throughout the month would be hard to budget for, but it's going well. I know exactly the $ amount and they stick to it.

Excellent advice on teaching your kids about money
This book is almost a "scares you straight" book. When I started seeing myself on so many pages, I was really sweatin'. An easy read, it is also full of great advice for teaching your kids. As I got further into the book, I particularly appreciated its layout.

The first half of the book is primarily anecdotes about encounters with debt, and results of the author's attempts to teach her children about handling money, also pulling in other research about kids and attitudes toward responsibility. I was a little worried about where the meat might be until I got to the second section (ch. 11), which details various aspects of money and money handling (credit cards, types of debt, compound interest, etc.) and ends each section with "The minimum your kids need to know about _____." I found this section a great resource for making notes about what I needed to talk to my own kids about. The final three chapters in the book talk about specific age-related issues and how much kids can be expected to understand at each age level. I found this section great for customizing a plan specific to each child.

dog's daughter: my life in communist china and laberal ameri
I just finished reading this book. As a person who was born outside of China, I have had experienced some of the prejudice that Lindsay come across at the academic world.
From my experience, a lot of Americans do not truly understand the Asian culture and they assumed all the same.
This is part of my daily occurance at work. Sometimes I'm so tired of explained to them.
Multi-culturalinasim do not work. We need to have a melting pot, so that all that want to become Americans can understand what this culture and languagge well.

A book about courage
Lei Wang was born to parents condemned as counter-revolutionaries during the time of Mao. She was raised by politically out-of-favor grandparents. She endured abuse from officials, teachers, Red Guards, and her peers, who called her "dog's daughter," lowest of the wretched.

Mao died and the political line changed. Lei distinguished herself as a student and teacher. She came to the United States for further study. She hoped that the United States was different. But what she experienced was a similar form of persecution from the liberal academic establishment.

Mostly this book is about courage. Lei has the courage to believe in reasonable, scientifically supported facts that contradict politically correct ones. She has the courage to express those ideas in hostile circumstances where a price is paid. And she has the courage to endure, believing in the value of even a lone voice of sanity.

I'm a retired teacher. I can attest to Lei's characterization of the educational establishment. But the book goes far beyond that, encompassing the heart of what promotes life and what corrupts it. "Dog's Daughter" is one of the most significant books I've read.

Fascinating & Disturbing Account of a Brave Woman's Battles
This book should appeal to anyone interested in China's history and the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution. Moreover, it should appeal to anyone interested in the "culture wars" that have unfortunately become a part of higher education in the USA. The book chronicles the struggles of a Chinese woman who is persecuted by Red Guards and Communist authorities during that country's insanity in the 1960s. After "escaping" to study in the USA, she learns that she must conform and obey the politically correct authorities who control her university or suffer the consequences. It appears that China doesn't have a monopoly on political insanity! The book is interesting and provocative. When reading the text--particularly the portion of her experiences in the USA--a reader doesn't know whether he or she should laugh or cry (probably both). One thing is for sure, you won't put this volume down until you have completed reading it! I rate this book Five Stars out of Five Stars!

Outstanding! Highly recommended
This new book by the Dolans will teach you everything you need to know about money from what to do about health insurance if you are laid off to hidden terms on your credit cards and how to buy the right kind of insurance.

No frills. No 1000 pages of frivolous information. No hawking certain insurance products and services. Just plain, good old fashioned advice that really works.

Everything you need to know about money...
As my father's health is beginning to decline, my wife and I recently found ourselves facing the difficult task of talking with my parents about their estate and finances. No other book helped us think about the questions we needed to ask and the way we needed to ask them like "Don't Mess with my Money." Not only did we discover that they needed a new insurance plan, but we also learned about ways to make smarter decisions about our OWN investments. I couldn't believe how many resources were packed into this one book, and would recommend it to readers of any age, no matter what their incomes are.

A great overall guide to help get your accounts in order
This is a great overall guide to get your financial house in order. The car chapter is worth the price of the book alone--it helped me save big last weekend when I was renegoiating my lease agreement.

As a new dad, the chapters on handling family finance and insurance will prove invaluable. We often forget to revaluate our financial needs when we get caught up in a new arrival.

A great buy, a great addition to my libarary.

Thanks Ken and Daria, Im going to try to catch your radio show to see what other sound advice you have to share.

Hello, and may I just say well done. Well done. Well....... done. There is nothing on the earth better, than to see just a hint of incest injected into our modern animation. Ben and the doc, our unlikely heroes (and villians) in this epic novel! A little squeeze on the knee here, and a little stroke of the ass there, and everything is kicking off well! Yes, an enjoyable book. I would like to thank Jonathon Katz. A man. A man. Oh, man, what a man! Do you think he ever surfs the web? Maybe check GOOGLE for links to Dr Katz.? Read these very reviews??? I would. And back to the truth. This book reminds me of the excellent television show, because it has the same characters! Yes, it is funny. Yes, it is cheap (Money wise). And yes, it is good. Buy It! Or steal it! But don't burn it.

SHOUTING TOWARDS DOOR: ("Thanks ma! I'll be doon in a minute!")

If Bill Gates happens to be reading this....... GET BENT!!!

Thank you for your time, any donations are welcome. I'm saving up for a boat.

It not only shows Dr. Katz as being a therapist, it shows him as that cute little bald guy we all need. Dr. Katz is CUTE!!!

This book ruled. It really did.

Ben (Dk's son) is just as cute! He's a big 25yr old softie. You don't need to watch the show to appreciate the humour either.

Dr. Katz makes seeing a psychiatrist a riot
I thought the book was very funny. If you enjoy the Dr. Katz show, you must have this book.

Restoring the circle....
THE EARTH IS MY MOTHER is the tale of a girl named "Star" -- a spunky 11-year and a true heroine. EMM has been beautifully illustrated by Bev Doolittle--known for her "camouflage" Native American and wildlife artwork. Since millions of dollars from the proceeds of Ms. Doolittle's works have gone to support the National Wildlife Federation, you can imagine the major theme of this book is the preservation of the wilderness. The storyline is based on Ms. Doolittle's concept but the text was actually written by Elise Maclay, author of two books of poetry, "Approaching Autumn" and "Green Winter." EMM is a feast for the ear and the eye.

I cannot praise this book enough as it reflects all my core beliefs--that girls can be strong, brave, and caring individuals, that traditional cultures have much to teach us, that we are all part of the great circle of life, and that we are made from stardust and the earth is our mother.

As a childhood fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories, Thorton Burgess' "Old Mother West Wind" tales, and fan of American Indian traditions and lore as well as a lover of the great outdoors, I was pleased to discover a book I could hand to my granddaughters with these words, "You want to know what life is about? read this book."

adventure story for children who love nature
This is a beautifully written adventure story set in the Southwest which my son and daughter, ages 10 and 11, both loved. It made a terrific family 'read aloud' for all of us. Like most kids today, they are conservationists and lovers of nature and Native American lore. The author artfully sets forth an important environmental issue, destruction of habitat, in an adventure-story format. The 11 year old heroine, Sarah, is brave and delightful, wrestling not only with saving the earth but family difficulties my kids empathized with. The illustrations by Bev Doolittle -- 'camoflague' art the kids loved to piece together -- are gorgeous. We loved it! I'm ordering a few copies for friends -- it's a great summer read for kids.

the earth is my mother
When an eleven years old girl, wise beyond her years, deeply feels for the earth and its endless bounty of beauty and truth embarks on a journey that encompasses the circle of life. Her "vision quest" begins to save a magical canyon. Capturing justice with her camera she finds that in her photography along with the assistance of the media, they are able to give back to Mother Earth and its preservation of truth, beauty and the pursuit of happiness. It is recommended for young adults, however, the spirit of this book can touch anyone and it's art is too real!

candid and perceptive
Embryologist: My Eight Decades in Developmental Biology by John Philip Trinkaus combines the passion and diligence of the researcher with a rare frankness about himself, his colleagues, and his discipline. Candid and perceptive, he brings to life crowds of people and takes us with them on a voyage of discovery into some of today's most important scientific advances.
Submitted for Dr. Trachtenberg by Dr. Kurt E. Johnson, President and Publisher, J&S Publishing Company

A literary gem
This personal memoir by the world's leading authority on morphogenetic movements in early embryonic development is a literary gem. The writing is lucid and expressive, and the author's style conveys in a clear, direct voice that will be easily grasped by lay people, the fundamental questions in the early development of animals. I was sorry when I finished reading the book because I wanted more.

Of greater importance, in my opinion, is the obvious passion Trinkaus evinced for his craft and for the animal material he worked with all of his life. This emerges not only from his careful, critical discussions of basic questions concerning cellular movements, and the reasons for the experimental approaches taken by him and his scientific colleagues, but in his descriptions recounting the excitement of discovery, starting in his late teens when he studied the genetics of pigmentation in goldfish, and continuing into his sixties, when, in a darkened laboratory at the Roscoff Biological Station in France, he discovered for the first time directed (pigment) cell movement in the developing eggs of the blenny, a small marine fish. A sentient reader can follow through the pages of this latter journey of discovery and experience the fervor that gripped this outstanding scientist on the cusp of one of the last important scientific forays of his productive life.

Trink's friends and colleagues who have not already purchased a copy of this memoir should do so, because they will have the experience of revisiting, in a delivery redolent of his characteristic bluntness and panache, the personal and professional passions that directed his life and the obvious pleasure he derived from his close personal relationships. As someone who knew and admired this exceptional scholar for fifty years, I promise you that reading this memoir will be a moving experience. Trink is gone but his remarkable spirit lives on in his memoir.

Review submitted by Kurt E. Johnson, Ph. D. on behalf of Dr. Mellon.

Trink's memoirs
How objective could YOU be if you wrote a review of something your father wrote?! Well, that is the position that we former Trink students are in as we read "Embryologist," the memoirs of J.P.Trinkaus. This chronicles his viewpoint of 70 years of developmental biology as seen while growing up on Long Island (New York), during summers at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass., and during academic years as Professor of Biology at Yale University.
Trink was an enthusiastic embryologist researcher, an exciting lecturer/teacher, and a stimulating mentor. For those of us who knew him, this is a wonderful opportunity to glimpse his reasoning on issues that once were central in our education. To the extent that we all witnessed them, the events, personalities, and discussions described seem quite accurate, written in an informal, reasonably raucous manner that students may find interesting and entertaining.
Although the book is directed mainly at biologists, lay readers of high school age and older, interested in biology in particular or research in general, will find rich material here, written in an easily readable style. ALL of Trink's publications are given in full bibliographic detail in one of the appendices (PubMed won't generate that printout), as is the scientific lineage of his mentors and the students he trained. The index is particularly useful to find out whether YOU are discussed somewhere in the text!
I think the book will develop a wider readership among those who never knew Trink. I get the same sense from reading this book that I always get from re-reading Sinclair Lewis's Arrowsmith. It will be an interesting book for high school students and undergraduates to read if they wonder what it's really like to be a biologist, and for graduate students and postdocs to read if they wonder what the web of departmental politics and scientific competition can be like. It also ought to be instructive to students to see the importance to one's own career of stepping up to the plate and speaking out on matters of principle, sometimes at some considerable risk to one's career. Personality DOES matter in science. Great research often gets accomplished because two individuals enjoy social interactions and discover that they also bring complementary skills for answering important questions uniquely.

ONE OF THE BEST ROMANCES OF ALL TIME
Escape Not My Love was the very first historical romance novel I ever read. I was twelve years old, my parents had just divorced, and I had begun to immerse myself in books for escape. It's sounds a bit trite to say a romance novel changed my life, so I won't be so extreme as to go that far, but it definitely influenced me in a profound way. The love story between Jay and Jennifer is phenomenal. Elaine Coffman's writing is so rich and lyrical; I'm still moved by it every time I read it, and yes, I cry every time I read that beautiful, sweet ending.

I do have to say however, that if you really want to see the love story portrayed best, read the original, not the re-issue. "Jay-lite" isn't as sexy as the tortured, Alpha-male of the original. I really resent the fact that romance writers think all women are bored of the macho hero. The fact that historicals have all SNAG (Sensitive New Age Guys)heroes is something that has me very wary every time I read a book published after 1990.

Loved it
I absolutely loved this book. Probably would be in my top 20 romnces.

Absolutely Enchanting!
Wow. The emotion in this book is so compelling. Jay Culhane is the ultimate male, and has finally met his match in Jennifer Baxter! This book was so well written it made me rage at Jay, and finally understand and accept him. I admire Jennifer's steadfastness for willing to settle for no less than Jay's heart. Unlike other simpering heroines simply clamoring to be near the men they love, Jennifer made a decision and was willing to stick by it, even if it meant never seeing her beloved Jay again.
