A MUST READ
When I finished this book, I had a new respect for Judy Nelson. With everything that has been said and printed about her she still finds it in herself to let us in and get to know her a little better. Since the only things that we really knew before her books, was that she left her husband and kids for another woman, she took alot of heat for that from both sides, gay and straight. She took even more heat when the two women parted company and her first book. It takes real strength and character to come through all of this and still refuse to tear Martina apart like she has done to Judy. I for one really thank Ms. Nelson for her honesty.

Absolutely "Riveting"
This book was magnificent. If you have ever been in love and lost that love, this is the book you need to read. I have read her first book"Love Match" and it was wonderful, but this book is "double" wonderful. She seems at peace finally and once again happy with her life. And if anyone deserves it, it is Ms. Nelson. She helped me in my time of crisis. I lost someone very special to me, and I read her book. The courage she exemplifies, made me feel like I had a friend to talk to. She is a wonderful person, makes you feel like she is your best friend. I truly hope she writes another wonderful book.

What a book!!!
This book, is a definate for anyone who needs the courage to make difficult choices in their lives. Judy Nelson has become a heroine of mine just for her convictions and her honesty. I really related to her. I read Love Match but found her changed and "still" in this one. I wish she would write more!!!

Consult your doc; Firm your abs
I had only one problem with Clothing Optional -- my stomach hurt from laughing so much. On the other hand, it does tone up the muscles to laugh that hard, but be sure to check with your doctor if the possibility of splitting your sides poses a hazard for you. This wonderfully intelligent and witty book of essays proves that no matter how much sorrow life puts in front of us, the gift of humor is always a spark of hope. Julietta Appleton's book combines brilliance, irreverence, and a remarkably keen eye for all that makes us human. Read and delight in Clothing Optional yourself; then give a copy to a friend whose life needs a shot of pure joy.

Brilliant wordsmith who turns the ordinary to extraordinary!
Julietta Appleton has done the unthinkable -- she has composed a collection of tales that are endearing, truly touching and sure to make even the bawdiest reader blush! With a great, big heart and razor sharp wit, Appleton is a Dotty Parker sequestered to the suburbs. A little bit city mouse, a little bit country, Appleton is a woman of the world with enough joie de vivre to go around. Lucky for us she is willing to share!

Laughed out loud
This book had me in stitches. I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face. (I got many strange looks from my fellow train commuters).

If you enjoy real-life stories and love to laugh, you'll enjoy this quick-witted, highly entertaining book. Julietta Appleton has this tremendous ability to capture some serious and /or difficult situations and turn them into hysterical stories. Thanks Julietta.

Come my little Angel
I decided to read this book based on a recommendation by Liz Curtis Higgs (one of my favorite authors)and I am so glad I did. This book is a wonderful little story about how God honors the faith of a child. I read alot of books and it has been a long time since one moved me to tears, but that is exactly what this one did. It is easy to focus on the bad things in this world, especially now, but this book reminds us that God does care about us and our world and he will answer prayer.

Heartwarming
In 1912 in the Sierras, life is not only hard for everyone, but most people believe they are worse off now than a few years ago. Ten years old Daisy James insists she sees angels, but her two older brothers and her younger siblings look upon her as a lunatic. Still, Daisy believes while knowing that all the townsfolk are sad, especially her mother Abigail, who stopped singing and laughing when she lost the baby last year.

Daisy has a plan to bring joy and God back into the lives of the beleaguered locals. She wants to build a church, but no one heeds the words of a preadolescent female. With the patience of Job, Daisy writes a play, COME, MY LITTLE ANGEL, in which she persuades her peers to participate on the journey back home.

COME, MY LITTLE ANGEL will catch the attention of the reader from start to finish with its "Little Engine that Could" story line to inspire everyone at a time we need books like this. The historical tale never slows down as readers feel the pain of the charcaters and the hopes of the little heroine who refuses to bend from peer, parental, and sibling pressure. Diane Noble provides a noble experience for those readers who need a lift or who want an angel in their life should share the novel with their children.

Harriet Klausner

Aglow with angelic goodness!
A sparkling gem of a story that transcends season and settings! From the first page, COME MY LITTLE ANGEL tugged at my heartstrings, drawing me into young Daisy's magical world, infusing me with her unwavering hope. A timeless classic!

Common Sense Not Required: Idiots Designing Cars + Hybrid Vehicles: My Career with Chrysler

Not just for car junkies!
Having read "Common Sense Not Required," I am most impressed with the author's thorough knowledge of the industry, and his skill in explaining even complex mechanical situations. I have a sufficient knowledge about cars, but was concerned that I might be overwhelmed by the technical jargon. Not so! I laughed out loud at some of the antics of the Chrysler employees. The author's voice and humor make it a very readable book. There's a lot of practical information as well as numerous interesting stories that keep the reader turning pages. Even though I don't work in the car industry, I drive one, and the stories contained herein will appeal to most people. The information on hybrid vehicles is very timely and informative. This is a book you will want to OWN!

Living in the shadow....
Mr. Boberg has hit upon the crux of the American automotive industry, that being, "idiots" tend to be examples of THE PETER PRINCIPLE, personified. Management at Chrysler has never been responsibly described by the mainstream press, never utilizing anything less than glowing terms in the early to latter 1990's. Newspapers and magazines all seemed to fawn over the executives regardless of capability, based solely on those executives' adeptness at public relations. Several of the minions described in this book cost AMC and Chrysler millions of dollars, due to their ineptitude, in my opinion, and now, the facts surrounding their "accomplishments" are out in the open, for all to see the heretofore hidden warts on the programs hailed as successes by the media, such as the Detroit Free Press.

Technical expertise is not required to understand the terminology used in this book, as Mr. Boberg is very adept at explaining concepts in lay terms. Overall, any true enthusiast of this industry, including those employed therein, should place this book on the top of their "Franklin Planner" to-do list.

Wow! Rare glimpse
Our views of the inside of the auto industry have been limited to PR-saturated praise in business magazines, self-loving autobiographies, and exposes written by famous people (most notably John DeLorean). This book is written by a very talented and reputable suspension engineer, and covers his time at AMC and Chrysler. A co-worker told me that Chrysler manages to get by for the same reason as any large, badly run company (e.g. most of the rest of the industry): the dedicated people work hard to triumph over the dimwits and egomaniacs...but this book will tell you a lot about the industry.

Unusual in this book is a large section on hybrid-electric cars, telling where they are practical, and where they are hype; being written by an engineer, these chapters use actual facts and figures.

I don't agree with most of the author's political opinions, but fortunately these are largely confined to the last chapter.

You really have to buy this book.

Incredible
This is one incredible book. Inlander does the best job I've seen of voicing consumer concern and disgust with the current health care system. His humor is wonderful, but his message is quite serious. This is a book anyone using our health care system should read.

AMAZING
What makes this book amazing is the candor of the author. He holds nothing back when challenging the health care system. He clearly speaks for most consumers who are sick and tired of the greed and secrecy of today's health care system. This is a must read for every medical consumer.

UNBELIEVABLE --SHOULD BE #1 ON THE BESTSELLER LIST
What a fantastic book. This is one of the most interesting, irreverent, and important books of the year. It deserves to be number one on the bestseller list. Inlander holds no punches as he speaks for the medical consumer. He challenges everything from managed care to greedy doctors. He does it with style, humor, and understanding. This is a must read for everyone and a definite read if you're a health care provider.Buy this one and you won't be sorry.

The Computer - My Life
Published in Hardcover by Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG (31 August, 1993)
Authors: Konrad Zuse, R. Bauer, and H. Zemanek
Amazon base price: $
Personal computers didn't appear until the 1970s, but as early as 1941, the first automated, program-controlled, and freely programmable computer was up and running. The Computer-- My Life is the story of Konrad Zuse and his revolutionary invention--the computer (or mechanical brain as he liked to call it), which Zuse built in his parents' living room. Zuse writes his autobiography simply and directly to be accessible to a wide audience of non-technophiles and includes hand-drawn diagrams of computer functions, as well as cartoons from his younger years when he dreamed of becoming an artist. The book also includes appendices with detailed technical information for the more technical reader.
Average review score:

One of the few imporant biographies of the 20th century.
This book and its author are just amazing. Konrad Zuse is definitly a unique character and so is his story of the invention of the FIRST computer during World War II in Berlin.

Read it!
An excellent source of information for those who mistakenly thought that ENIAC was the first general purpose computer.

Critical for an understanding of the hist. of computers
Zuse explains how and why he build the world's first computer. Easy to understand, but not belittling. This book is essential for anyone interested in the history of CS.

Courage My Love: A Book to Light an Honest Path
Merle Shain wrote with an illuminated honesty that lit the dark places of all of our lives. Her simple truth and beauty helped me navigate through some rough waters and I would recommend her books to everyone who ever struggled with relationships in any part of their life. She lives on in all of us who loved her lucid and profound writing.

You will never be the same!
I read this book and it's authenticity, wisdom, and intimacy are beyond compare. No one I know of writes about love like Merle Shain. I read this book thinking she was still alive and when I found out she had already died I cried and I am starting to tear up even as I write this. She is writing with Love and you not only experience love through her words you feel it in your bones. After reading this you will be clear about what your role is in life when it comes to being in a relationship. A gem, a classic, and a gift straight from the heart. I treasure the few copies I have. It has made me wiser than my years. Thank you, Merle, from my heart, to the internet, and to the great beyond. Thank you. I send you my love.

Courage My Love
All of Merle Shain's books are balanced, insightful, tender overviews of the human relationship in its various guises. Why these books haven't gone into re-print is beyond comprehension!

Unraviling Passion
James Kilgro's electifing southern antique story, of a house
maid's intensifing relatioship with her white cousin in 1918.
It tells us that they suffered socially as well as privately
in the quest to explore love and intimacy in a era when it
was forbidden. Moving away to escape the discust and terroism
of the community only to find that when she returns married,
the affair would only emerge to confront them both and their
families of both races. It's hard to put down!

Kilgo turns a sad story into a wonderfully moving tale
Jim Kilgo did well with his poetry, but this novel surpasses all that he has done before. The vividly descriptive prose brings the story to life and evokes images that only someone totally familiar with the landscape and the people could manage. Readers are transported to that distant time when the memories of a brutal war were still fresh on the minds of many Southerners. A time when all the roads were filled with chokeing dust in dry weather, and life sucking mud in wet weather. The intense conflict between whites and blacks is eloquently portrayed by Kilgo, and the reader is forced to feel the anguish of a man torn between his duty to kith an kin, and the feelings of his heart. Bravo to Kilgo for tackling this difficult subject, but even more accolades are deserved for the eloquent way that it was done.

a heart stabbing love story, perfectly told
This is a gorgeously told story about possibly real people - simple people whose only complexity is their love, which defies properness. Kilgo's setting is so rich (and dear to me because it is my home and the home of "my people") I can actually see the shabbiness of the postwar southern landscape, and feel the invincible pride of the otherwise defeated southerners. Call me a sap, but I swooned over Hart's "poor man's Shakespeare" description of Jennie on page 159, and clutched my heart (and my Kleenex) when he said it was an honor to die for the woman he loved. This is a simple sweet tale, and was a complete joy to read. I suspect this book will be a great hit with southern women - we don't see many heroes like Hart Bonner around here anymore.

POWERFUL ...like Angela's Ashes
If you appreciated Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt for its presentation and viewpoint of growing up in poverty, you'll like this book for the same reasons--not on the subject of poverty but on race and understanding what it's like to grow up Black (& middle-class) in this country. It just tells, in a straightforward voice, the story of her life.

As a 10 year old, my mother had me read a book called "Black Like Me." It was a white man's experiment with wandering around in the world as a Black man. Carroll Parrott Blue's book is a better, more authentic version written by a Black woman who has lived the experience and is willing to talk about it.

I loved this book because from the first pages, with its pictures and its text, it lets the reader inside like an intimate friend--she shares what most Black people don't talk about. She lets you inside her experience. It's personal, yet it's nonfiction that reads like a novel. She shares her difficult personal relationship with her mother and her view of the world through popular culture that is familiar to all of us--but seen through Black eyes.

A Daughter's Story
I really enjoyed this book. The author wove together her personal experiences --the pain of growing up in a loveless yet nuturing home in Texas, and a type of everyman's history of the civil rights movement and the annonomous worker bees and vanguard her mother belonged too. She does this in an interesting and engaging way. She weaves her story of being born at the "wrong time" and coping with feelings of being an unwanted late life child which lead to an emotionally and physically abused childhood into the visual story and history of Blacks in media and film at the time Blacks created the protest movement(s) to erase injustice, and pyschological pain the african Americans experienced in America's south. Her story is a compelling one. Especially because it is so universally human. Her love hate relationship with her mother was the most poinant aspect of this book. She describes her response to the abuse of her mother yet she so admired, love, and comes to understand and forgive her finally.

There were some unanswered questions the reader might have , like what about her brother. What kind of relationship did they have? Was he too mistreated by her mother? Is she still married and what role did being married have on her relationship with her mother? but this is a story about a tragic and troubled and mother and daughter relationship.

IT IS A VERY INTERESTING READ for anyone interested in autobiography/civil rights movement and the media.

Innovative Biography!!
This is one of the most creative approaches to autobiography I've read in a long time. I enjoyed reading and studying it. The book is a highly visual autobiography---part prose, part poetry, part history and historical images. I particularly enjoyed how Ms. Blue revealed the nuances of an African American middle class mother-daughter relationship. Telling her story against the backdrop of the movies that were coming of age when she was growing up provided an enlightening perspective on the powerful influence of American movies on the human psyche.
