Home Run: My Life in Pictures

Twenty-five seasons after shattering baseball's sacred standard for career home runs, the game's most overlooked superstar bangs out the kind of celebratory volume his brilliant career deserves. While Hank Aaron is a center-stage contributor throughout this rich testament of words and images, its real power is in the all-star lineup that goes to bat for his achievements--both on and off the field. Names from within and beyond baseball, teammates and opponents alike--Jimmy Carter, Bob Gibson, Warren Spahn, Rachel Robinson, Jesse Jackson, Yogi Berra, Bob Costas, and Willie Mays for starters--all tip their caps to a man of uncanny consistency, persistence, and modesty. He needed all of that, of course, to chase down Babe Ruth.

It would be nice to look back and recall how the nation got behind Aaron in his solitary pursuit. The sad truth, as Home Run inspiringly recounts, is that it didn't. In his quest for the record, Aaron not only came face to face with the ghost of The Bambino; he also had to look squarely into the ugly eye of the specter of racism. Simply by doing his job as well as he could, Aaron stared them both down with his will, courage, pride, and decency. Jesse Jackson sums up the man, and the chase, with marvelous simplicity: "[Aaron] didn't hit a home run to take dignity away from the pitcher. He hit a home run to assert his skill." Home Run is a lovely reminder of that assertion. --Jeff Silverman

incredible
the man was not only a great ball player but a reminder of the struggle for african-americans.he broke down so many doors.imagine having the fbi escort you to a baseball game? hate mail for breaking babe ruth's record? jackie robinson&larry doby opened the doors as well as the negro league but mr. Aaron kicked it thru.he is a class act and a true ambassador.he stared racisim dead in the eye and achieved.a true hero for all time.this book states that&more.

Great book -- made me cry ...
the book deeply touched me , as it told the life of the great base ball palyer , and his struggle as an african american in the major leagues.

Beautiful book
This was an excellent book with beautiful illustrations. The quotes from so many exceptional athletes really adds to the book. It made a great Father's Day gift, especially since Hank was in Atlanta last week for the book signing. He's a class act who is very humble. He's the type of person I hope my children have as one of their heroes. I didn't realize until I read the book the kind of discrimination and criticism he had to deal with in baseball.

Hours of Torture, Years of Silence : My Soul Was the Scene of the Crime
Published in Paperback by RapeRecovery.com (May, 1998)
Author: Teresa Lauer
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Everyone Should Read This Book
In this book, Teresa Lauer shares the story of her brutal rape and torture, the aftermath of struggling with PTSD, and her struggle to achieve some kind of peace and equanimity in her life. The fact that she eventually triumphs over the horrific violence she experienced is inspiring, and a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Teresa's honesty about her feelings and struggles will be especially reassuring to other rape survivors - as a victim of sexual assault myself, I highly recommend this book to anyone with a similar experience, or to anyone who wants to know the real truth about rape, and the toll it takes on a woman's life.

A Time of Healing from PTSD
When I found this book, I was first of all amazed that this author would be able to write her experience in the fullness she could, to reach inside and be able to describe what torture and pain "felt" like. I had dicovered my own torture at the age of 18, and even though I had been seeing a Psychologist for a year, I found strength and compassion for myself and others who have had to experience such a personal crime. Teresa helped me find within myself a new pathway of healing. Her abilities of expression in writing, as well as her description of the torture and what it did to her, were frightening, yet she caused me to go on, instead of turn inside.

A picture of her own healing is portrayed, giving others the strength to go on. A book that turned my entire life around, and even though the journey is not easy by all means, it gave me determination and a resource to view when I wanted to quit.
Thank you to this author, her beautiful ability to write, and to write about a subject many would turn away due to their own fear.

This nation, as well as the world, need to realize these types of events happen each day and many either go on, or if help is not found, commit suicide, due to the lack of society to understand or for them to close their eyes to the evils of some in the societies of our world.

A must read for not only those of rape, violence, and torture, but as well, for clinicians who practice Psychology in helping survivors heal.

Helpful recovery tool
I bought this book for my girlfriend to help her find ways to recover from a very brutual attack that occurred when she was much younger.

This book was very effective for her because it paralleled her experience: a prolonged assault involving extensive contact with her attacker. In addition, it addressed the Post Tramautic Stress Disorder (PTSD) problems she has been encountering as a result of the attack.

If someone you love has suffered from an attack, books like this can help both you and them understand what has happened and how they might be feeling. My girlfriend had trouble articulating her feelings about the attack and this book (and others) helped her overcome her difficulties and express herself.

Great Book for toddlers who are charmed by DINOSAUR
This book tells the toddlers about the characteristics of animals, not just dinosaur, like creast, horns, tails. The pictures of the books are very charming. Even my 30 months old son cannot read the words, he can tell the book just from the picture. It is amusing that a small child can read it himself. It is a great book for toddlers who are ready to read by themselves.

Finally a book for very early readers
I had been trying to find a book my kindegartner could ready by himself, and this was one of few with large print and very simple text. There are a few words that are unusual, but they can be deciphered from the illustrations. He loves it. The story flows nicely from one page to the next, the illustrations match the text, and the book is even educational. It is not easy to find a book that is not only aimed at the very earliest readers but also captures the interest of an active youngster. This one did it. Now my son is interested in reading many new books. Highly recommended.

Great for K and younger
I bought this book when my son was three and read it to him. He has hundreds of books and recently rediscovered this one in a box. Now, five, he reads it to me. There are a few hard words but many are "sight" words right out of his Kindergarten lessons.

I Love the Internet, but I Want My Privacy, Too!
Published in Paperback by Prima Lifestyles (26 August, 1998)
Author: Chris Peterson
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $1.97
Buy one from zShops for: $5.95
Chris Peterson has created a highly pragmatic guide for all those who want to enjoy the benefits of the Internet but are concerned about maintaining their privacy. Peterson examines the trade-offs, showing how properly shared information can provide you with important services, from enhancing your health care to protecting you from criminal activity. The flip side, however, is that erroneous information can prevent you from finding employment, deny you credit, or even bring you into conflict with law enforcement.

Individuals can use Peterson's information to determine how much personal information they are willing to divulge. Peterson also shows how to watch for online scams and how to deal with the possibility of erroneous information. Several times throughout the book she pauses for a "privacy profile exercise," which enables you to discover what information about yourself is already public on the Internet or what information is being exchanged between your computer and others to keep track of your online activities.

A special section deals with children online, the risks they face, and what steps you can take to protect them from both commercial and personal predators. She also covers the steps currently being taken by government and the private sector to assure you greater control over private information. --Elizabeth Lewis

Average review score:

An excellent book for those using the Net
Attorneys filing lawsuits for invasion of privacy claims and other like matters appreciate educated persons who are able to understand the delicate balancing of privacy and convenience on the Internet.

This book is a true eye opener for those interested in protecting their most valuable asset - their individuality and privacy.

"Life and Death on the Internet"
This book starts the job in outlining Internet privacy issues, but 'Life and Death on the Internet' by Keith A Schroeder finishes the job. I think both books go hand-in-hand. This book outlines the issues clearly and 'Life and Death on the Internet' gives several step-by-step outlines to put privacy into effect. Both books are probably the two best Internet books of the year!

Keeps parents slightly ahead of their computer oriented kids
Extremely well written, clear and to the point. Easy to follow guidance for uneasy parents whose children seem so at-ease with computer technology.

Hooray - Finally a Gift that Mommy can treasure for years!!!
The "Hooray! My Baby Is on the Way Calendar" was a wonderful way for me as a first time mom to become attuned to what was going on with my baby week by week. The calendar also displays adoreable pictures of babies for you to ahhhh over in anticipation of your new arrival. The stickers (first ultrasound, picked babies name, first heartbeat heard, wore maternity clothes, and etc.) are a nice way to reflect on the memories of pregnancy. The calendar also displays helpful hints that guide you on what can be expected. These hints also can be dropped to signifant others as a suttle way of saying "I need a back rub!" The calendar is a great gift to yourself or to those that are expecting around you!!!

A MUST HAVE FOR THE MOM TO BE!
I used this calendar for my second pregnancy (unfortunately it wasn't around for my first). It was such a great way to document my pregnancy and keep up-week by week-everything that was going on. I love how you can open up and insert ultrasound and other pregancy pics. The stickers were great too, there is one for everything (ultrasound appts, dr. visits, first kicks, classes, showers, weight gain and more)... a great thing for a busy mom :) I looked forward to turning each week to a completely adorable picture of a baby. Now if only they would come up with a first year calendar!

Great quality and awesome pictures!
I love the quality and seeing the different, most adorable pictures every week. I love the fun stickers, useful information and there's even a section for my ultrasound and belly photo's. Definitely a keepsake I will treasure forever. I also gave one to my friend as a gift! She loves it!

The Perfect Gift!
My daughter recently got married and we gave her this book as a gift. Although a couple of pages were missing and the cover bent, she and her new family are "living happily ever after" despite losing the little one a few weeks before the wedding.
I'd definitely recommend this one for newlyweds - any young gentleman would be thrilled to have a bride like Jo Ann York!
All the best,
Mrs. M. Da Vomme

How I Feed my Family on $16 a Week
Someone gave me a copy of this book when I first got married. I have worn it out. Her advise is sound and timely even though the prices are not. The recipes are simple, yet tasty; food that my children loved to eat. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to cut food costs and learn to cook good, simple meals. I can't imagine being a wife and mother without this book as my companion.

Good Sound Advice
I bought the paperback version of this book in 1976 and wore it
out. It was very helpful and practical. She gives you good
tips on how to save money and time and her recipes are simple
but good. I would recommend this book to any mother with children
to feed. My children are grown now, but I still use the recipes
in this book.

How I Sold a Million Copies of my Software and how you can too!

What you need to know to be pro
Not so much of "How I did it", but more of "How you can do it", which is actually more important.

Aimed at selling your software in the mass market, gives lessons and ideas for selling through publishers and superstores, but not much about selling direct, especially on the web, maybe next printing revision.

Lots of good ideas, and if you haven't started on your software idea yet, this book will make you want to start.

Very easy reading, and thin too! Good for the midnight programmer / day tripper.

read insider info
Finally, a book that gives *real* info about the software publishing business. Even professionals will benefit from reading this one.

Software industry secrets candidly revealed. Excellent ref!
Author Herbert Kraft candidly reveals all the insider tips you need for launching a software product.

He tells you what failed and what worked for him. I started working on a software project that I feel sure will sell to the commercial market, thanks to his advice in the book.

My favorite part: which kinds of software titles sell and which don't.

Don't launch your software without this book. Well worth the price of the book. Mine is full of post-its to mark all the great stuff!

Not as much to this story
Nice story about a boy's imagination but not much else to the story. GREAT pictures, as usual by Mark Teague.

Enjoyable and worth purchasing (used in good condition) anyway - as I did.

Has it all
It has it all--a wild story, vivid drawings, great sense of humor. What an imagination!

Start The School Year Off With Mark Teague
This book IS perfect for starting off the school year! Teague is outstanding! When will the guy win a Caldecott? Every book he does is filled with magnificent illustrations and incredible stories! I met him a few years ago in California...what a gentleman...ALL CLASS!

A very wonderful book about a close relationship with 2 sons
This book is about a black man and the close day to dayrelationship with his 2 sons. It shows the need for a father to be arole model in their children's life on a daily basis. It is a subtil story teaching the values of having a father you can look up to, the kicker being that the father is 6' 9" !

Time well spent
Mr. Hurtt, I was in the childrens section of a book store and my son happen to pick up your book. He loves to read books that are easy to read, he had several books in his hand I told him to pick one out, and I would read it to him at bed time. That evening as I read your book to my son, it was so full of love and warmth, that only a father who loves his child could have. Also, the fact that you are an african american man with such nurturing values made me think about some of the ways as a mother I can be more patient with my kids. I actually think I enjoyed your book and its contents more than my son. I am a African American women and I give your book a 5 plus stars. This is my first time rating a book and I did it because, on today we as parents dont take the time to appreciate the fact that our little ones look up to us, and that we are the base of their survival in this crazy world we live in. I will highly recommend your book to my friends and co-workers. I hope, I will be seeing more of your work in the near future. You are a very Noble man, I felt that in your writing. Peace be with you............Myra Taylor R.N.

I enjoyed this book with my own sons. It is educational.
This book is very tasteful and well written. It is an enjoyable read to my children. The subject matter is great. I would recommend it to all parents and children.

Wonderful Book for Mother and Child
This book has become a favorite at our house. My daughter and I have read the book most nights since she was 18 months old....she is now 3. She finishes each of the sentences on the pages for me, as she now knows the book by heart. This is a great book.

She loves me too!
I love this book, and I love my Mommy for buying it and reading it to me. I always asked questions about other mommies. Now I know that animals have mommies who love them too.

Fantastic book for toddlers!
