This is a book that makes one think!
As one who has spent many countless hours delving through very profound books on Theology and the Holy Scriptures in an attempt to better know God, Christ and the Holy Spirit, I frequently become rather complacent in my faith. But this complacency does not mask questions in my mind that I can't seem to put to rest. I have turned to books that propose to answer these FAQs but I have found some of the explanations rather favoring a particular denominational approach or at least non convincing. I recently read Athol Dickson's "The Gospel According to Moses." It makes no claims as to answering these questions that I have. BUT somehow it does provide the explanations that I seek to several of my questions. The author's thinking is so very logical, so profound and so in line with most of my evangelical views. I learned so much from this book.It made me think, question and wrestle with religious concepts as I have never done before. His most perceptive and most Biblical view on "Why Bad things happen to Good People" is just one example of a very thought provoking and assuring discussion held on one of these questions. This book tends to bring one to the conclusion that the evangelical Christians and our Jewish brothers and sisters are truly akin in many of our beliefs. Although differences do occur, Dickson quietly seems to call us to celibrate that which binds us NOT what rends us assunder. This is not an easy read BUT it is one of the most thought provoking, assuring works that I have ever read. I would strongly recommend this book to all.

The Gospel is for Jews and Christians and Everyone
This morning, I have just completed reading "The Gospel According to Moses" ... I pulled an all-nighter with this one! I am a born again, spirit filled Christian who has been doing some introductory reading on the Jewish roots/Jewishness of Christianty, Messanic Judaism, history of the Bible (both "Old" and "New" Testaments) and how it was written, and similar topics. Therefore, when I read a preview of this book in a catalog, I jumped at the chance to buy it and was not disappointed! Here are some talking points: (1)If you are a Christian who has always asked yourself "Why is it that Jews do not accept Jesus as Messiah?" and "And what, if anything, can and should I do about it?", this book will answer such questions. (2)If you are Jew who has always wondered, "Why is it that Christians believe on Jesus as Messiah?" and "What is the meaning of this "Trinity" thing?" your questions may also be answered. (3)If you are a Christian or a Jew seeking to learn more about what the "Scriptures" known to Jesus and Paul (titled by Christians as "The Old Testament" but by Jews as The Torah, The Prophets (ex. Isaiah), The Writings (ex. Psalms) said about The Christ, the author will illustrate these for you in colorfully fascinating detail. (4) For Christians needing insight about the horrors Jews have historically suffered at the hands of Christians in the name of Jewish acceptance of the gospel, the author provides a brief but sobering summary of this dark part of our collective history (ex. - The anti-Semitic content of some of the writings of Martin Luther are clear and without dispute). The implications are that if we Christians were to seek out, understand and repent for the part we have played in the oppression of the sons/daughters of Abraham and Jesus, we could wrap this thing on earth up and return with our Jewish brothers and sisters to the Lord today. With this understanding, you will be able to understand with greater empathy what doctrine Jews do not believe and why...with more clarity what doctrines Christians and Jews actually believe in common. (5) For Jews, you will learn that there is a community of Christians seeking to reconcile with you as brothers...Christians who are also seeking to learn what you already know as the jumping off point to increased relationship man to man, and man with God. I do not believe that Jews need to fear they will be "converted" by this book (as there is no "Jews for Jesus" focus, for example), but I believe that Jewish thought and questioning regarding the 2000 year assertion that Jesus is Messiah will be provoked (which may be fear-provoking to some). Therefore, I would be interested to read the reaction of the Jewish community to this piece. (6) For Christians, the material presented in this book may be unfamiliar to you if you have not had exposure to the parallels between the two faiths (ex. the Talmud and its teachings)... but meet the challenge of this piece as a jumping off point anyway, because you will desire to learn more. As I read this book, I found myself laughing and crying out loud at the divine wisdom of God as the author did his human best to explain how God has revealed Himself both to the Jews, who are the sons and daughters of God first brought into Covenant with Him by the faith of Abraham (see Genesis Chapter 12) as well as the Gentiles (all of us who are not Jews) who are the sons and daughters of God brought and "grafted" into Covenant with God by the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (see Romans Chapter 11). Clearly, the Spirit of God has granted revelation knowledge to Mr. Dickson that must be shared with all. Buy, read and be blessed!

Great book!
This is a great book for any Christian who is interested in knowing more about Christianity's Jewish roots. Recurring themes and phrases from the Torah (Old Testament) as well as quotes from early Jewish writings and commentaries are compared to what Jesus taught and New Testament writers wrote. This book is not for the new Christian, but for the mature Christian who wishes to delve more deeply into understanding her faith. This is not an easy, summer read, but a book which will give you food for thought and leave you hungry for more of the Lord.

FILLS A VOID
"Happiness Is Not My Companion" The Life of Gouverneur K Warren by David M. Jordan (Insiana University Press, 2001) is a welcome addition to Civil War literature, filling a void in the biographies of key players in the North's bid for victory.

G. K. Warren, a graduate of West point, served in the Corps of Topographical Engineers and then taught mathematics at the Point until he was named lieutenant colonel of volunteers of the Fifth New York regiment. The high point of his career occurred on July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, when he recognized that the unoccupied Little Round Top was the key to the Federal's defense and quickly positiond troops on its summit and backside to prevent the Confederates from taking that hill and possibly destroying the entire Federal line.

As Jordan tells the rest of the story, Warren's subsequent service was characterized by arrogance, depression, a quick, sulphurous temper, and a bad habit of second-guessing his superior's orders. Just days before Lee's surrender, Warren's superior, General Phil Sheridan, relieved him of duty, casting a shadow of disgrace upon Warren's career and courage.

Unable to persuade General U S Gant to give him a court of hearing, Warren had to wait 15 years before the commanding general William T Sherman approved his application. By the time the inquiry was completed and the findings released (findings which at least partially exonerated him)Warren was dead.

The only other significant biography of Warren was published by his family in 1932, an apology vindicating the General and arguing his place in Civil War history.

Jordan's research includes the vast collection of papers which the General himself had arranged for his defense, but it is not for that reason one-sided or uncritical in its presentation of the General's personality, career, or place in history.

Everyone who today climbs to the crest of Little Round Top sees the larger than life statue of G. K. Warren, erected by the survivors of his first command. Few visitors, however, know that he was wounded there on that hot July afternoon, that he later was responsible for a meticulously exact map of the battlefield, that in spite of his sccess in Pennsylvania he was relieved of duty at Five Forks, Virginia, less than two years later and spent the remainder of his life trying to salvage his good name.

Jordan's book is an honest and revealing look at one of the lesser known but nonetheless significant military leaders of the war. The author's background as an attorney does influence his presentation, providing some analysis that readers may or may not accept. But this book does sit well along side his other Civil war biography on General Winfield Scott Hancock.

An apt title for an outstanding biography!
Having just finished David M. Jordan's "Happiness in Not My Companion", a well researched biography of General G. K. Warren, I wish to congratulate the author for his thorough and readable account of the general's life, and to recommend this book to anyone interested in civil war history, american military history, or biography of an individual who should be remembered in human as well as historical terms. The first half of Warren's story, describing his civil and military achievements, including his significant role at Gettysburg, through the Army of the Potamac's campaign of 1864, describes a man of ability and leadership, although Mr. Jordan plants the seeds of his future tangles with those in military authority. His relief from command by Sheridan near the end of the war and subsequent history is described with honesty and compassion, ending with Warren's death while attempting to clear his name via a military Court of Inquiry some 18 years after the fact. Mr. Jordan's research is exhaustive and heretofore unplumbed. His extensive use of quotations advances the narrative in an organized and readable style that had this reader unable to put the book down, especially after the battle at Five Forks. The author is to be commended for his research, his objectivity, and his highly readable style.

Justice Delayed
This biography has the ring of truth and the happy tone of justice done at last. G.K.Warren, born upstate New York 1830, West Point class of '50, brevet Major General in the Union Army, brilliant strategist at Gettysburg, later commander of the Fifth Corps, died in 1883 awaiting the results of hearings he had instigated to clear his reputation. Following one of the last Civil War battles, a Union victory at Five Forks, VA to which he had contributed, Warren was fired by General Sheridan with U. S. Grant's prior approval. With little else of interest to do for the next 18 years, Warren focussed ever more intently on restoring his good name , marching in place while his personal demon, Grant, occupied the White House. Shaara (Killer Angels) did most of the heavy lifting to unearth Warren and Joshua L. Chamberlain, letting Chamberlain stand as The Hero of Little Roundtop. Jordan, more subtle, leaves him as A Hero of Little Roundtop. (Moreover, Jordan's narrative recital of this and other battles is exceptionally coherent.) Warren is a puzzle: was he a depressive personality? an adult-onset diabetic? a Democrat-for-McClellan sore loser? just one more brilliant, touchy, odd-ball Civil War general? Jordan wisely declines any one conclusive answer and gives detailed evidence for several. The hearing commission's report published after Warren's death "cut both ways", as a lawyer (such as the author) might say. To his credit, Jordan lets the report pretty much speak for itself. If you have no stomach for ambiguity, stop with Killer Angels. Otherwise, read "Happiness is Not My Companion...."

Excellent
The forty-day retreat that this book guided me through led me into a much deeper relationship with God. It challenged me to go beyond my comfort level and to give myself daily to God's will. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to renew their daily walk with God.

Outstanding
This book was a watershed experience for me. It opened my eyes to what is missing in my Christian walk. I have been so hungry to understand how to let God fill this ache in my soul to know Him. I asked Him for something and He gave me this book. I can't say enough.

Changed my whole outlook
I am amazed at the anointing that is upon this book. Not only my life, but the lives of several people I know have been changed into lives immersed in the Spirit. Not only does this book challenge you and your perspective on your walk with Christ, but also LEADS you into that deeper walk.

My shrink gave me this book.
My shrink gave me this book. She said that Hirshkof was the best professor she ever had. I guess he teaches as thoroughly and entertainingly as he writes. The only problem with the book is the cheap quality of the paperback edition. The cover curls. I gave it to my husband to read the chapters on Sex, Marriage and Divorce. I bought myself a hard cover copy. I felt philanthropic since all the profits go to charity anyway. It read even better the second time. I recommend it very highly.

Great Book
I really enjoyed this enlightening book. The info and advice is direct and to the point. FYI, this book is a fabulous bargain considering Dr Herskopf is one of New Yorks top Psychiatrists. Save yourself 1000's in shrink bills just read the book.

Kudos to this shrink!
At first, I didn't think I would, but in the end, I liked this book a lot. Book 1, the "what, how and why" of anger is interesting, but predictable, like a good college course. Book 2, the author's original theories, is much better. Book 3, "Anger & sex & kids & teens & mobs, etc." is awesome. I re-read each chapter several times. It blew me away. Kudos to this shrink!

Finally!!!!
I used to be a listener of Bob and Sheri when I lived in South Carolina. In 2001, I moved to Rhode Island and it was bye-bye Bob and Sheri. Oh how I miss listening to them in the mornings. I was so excited to learn that Sheri wrote a book. It lived up to every expectation. I just got it in the mail yesterday and I can't put it down. It is blunt, humorous and gives practical advice. A must have book for couples who want to have kids. Thank you Sheri, and what can I do to get a RI station to play your show in the morning??????????

Love it
I love the Bob&SHeri show and am so glad the Sheri has written this book. I've been sneaking chapters at work and can't stop myself from laughing out loud.

Mommyhood isn't easy, but Sheri helps Moms feel the fun!
Sheri carefully journaled her thoughts and feelings during pregnancy and new mommyhood. The honesty and humor in Hello, My Name is Mommy will delight any reader, but will truly speak to pregnant women, new moms, and not-so-new moms! After reading Sheri's book, don't say she didn't warn you about the nitty gritty involved in earning the title Mom. However, the message that becoming MOM is a life-altering experience in so many ways shines through the sleeplessness and leaky breasts Sheri writes about. A perfect read for anyone who has ever been called Mom, this from a mother of five little ones: 9, 8, 4, 2, & 1. I MADE time to read this book!

Better Understanding of Children
This gave me a better understanding of being a single parent and helping my children adjust to a one parent household and to be more receptive to their needs

EXELLENT, EYE-OPENER, STRENGHT GIVING BOOK
I have been separated from my spouse for 3 1/2 years. This book blesses me so much. I've cried while reading it, because it ministers strength and answers many questions beginning with Why. It also helps you to realize that just because the husband is gone, does not mean you have no husband. He is a father to the fatherless -PSALM 68:5. Isaiah 54:5 says For Thy Maker is thy husband. I am learning to depend upon him to help me raise my 4 children, because I cannot do it alone and this book has blessed me with Strength - highly recommended!!!!

WONDERFUL!!!
This is a wonderful book for anyone raising kids. I recommend it to anyone who has kids, married or not, or who plan to have kids. Thank you Bishop Jakes for this wonderful book. It has helped me more than I can express!

A light at the end of the tunnel
This book was recommended by my endocrinologist. It explains everything in an easy to read and understand manner. Just where I had questions was an answer that appeared to be waiting for me!!

Deliciously Simple!
This book works! The advice is sound and simple. Put it to the test and you will note be disappointed. Through daily excersize and cutting back on portion size, I have lost over 25 pounds!

Advice on working exercise into one's daily routine

Coulston (1998-99 past president of the American Dietetic Association); and Mike Goodkind (former Associated Press writer and editor at the Stanford University Medical Center for more than twenty years) successfully collaborated to write Help! Helpful for early toddlers learning physical features
Somehow, my 14-month-old started identifying several of her own physical features (including "neck"!) by close approximations of their names after only 3 or 4 nights of reading this book before bed. Very shortly after, she started pointing out the same features in pictures of animals and people around the house. The illustrations are crystal clear in their intent, with only the last two pages presenting any difficulty (one covers elbow, arm and chin in one breath, and the other is for skin, which I imagine is tough to illustrate). I would recommend this book to anyone teaching the easy body parts to her/his child.

Highly recommend
This book was a gift and will be a gift for others from us. It taught my 1 year old through it's wonderful sing song rhyme to it's beautifully colorful illustrations, her body parts in two days. She brings it to me and can't read it enough. We highly recommend this for any age.

Great for Little Ones
I'm buying a copy of this book for my new nephew. My son has loved this book since he was 6 or 7 months old and now, at 14 months, he still smiles when he sees us pick it up. The illustrations are realistic enough to keep his attention and the rhyming text is short and sweet. I'd also recommend another Bill Martin Jr book for older kids, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. It's an alphabet book that my 4 1/2 year old loves. Weeks after her teacher read it at school, my daughter is still talking about it. We're buying a copy of that too.

Insightful!
So often executives check their faith in God at the door before coming to work. Using the stories of 20 influential leaders to illustrate 10 business principles, author Larry Julian skillfully shows that it is possible to integrate your religious faith and your work practices. These men and women successfully run major organizations, and all of them credit their belief in God for their achievements. Although some of the stories are more inspiring than others, this book promises relief from the pressures of the bottom line and freedom from the stumbling blocks that impede success, both temporal and eternal. Each chapter includes thought-provoking questions you can contemplate or use as the basis of further discussions. Julian ends with a step-by-step business plan showing you how to apply all your newly processed spiritual knowledge as a practical tool. Although - given that it is dedicated to Jesus Christ - the book seems primarily directed to Christians, We suggest that any leader who is trying to make a profit, keep priorities straight and motivate employees should take a look.

A Great Book!!!
For me, this book was truely inspirational, a breath of fresh air. I, (like many many others in society,I'm sure) used to believe that there was little room for God or our faith in the business world. It was just dog-eat-dog, Monday to Friday. Larry Julian shows you just how uninformed that thinking is. He interviews not just average business men & women, but captains of industry. True leaders in their field. And he shows you how these people not only believe in God, but practice their Faith and follow HIS teachings EVERY DAY. It is WHY they are so successful.
For those of you who think they have to choose between God or business, read this book.

Interesting, inspirational reading
America is populated by a great many people who attend religious services on a regular basis. They affiliate with a congregation of people who think, believe, and worship as they do. Millions of people build their lives around their religious beliefs and principles.

Then there's business. In the world of business, profit is worshipped by corporate leaders and employees at all levels. Achieving corporate goals becomes all-consuming, with little room for bible-based principles. Biblical teachings are fine for the personal side of life, but business is business. Or is it?

The movement known as spirituality in the workplace has been gaining momentum, with supporters careful to differentiate between spirituality and religion. The human spirit is central to the corporate spirituality theme, but God and religion do seem to find their way into the picture. When people express their spirituality, their religious beliefs underlie their values and approach, even if specific teachings are not overtly expressed.

In God is My CEO, Larry Julian surveys the landscape through the stories of twenty well-respected leaders. Each of these influential people runs a business through the application of biblical principles, with great results. You'll learn from people like Bill George, CEO of Medtronic; Jerry Colangelo, owner of the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Diamondbacks; Al Quie, the former governor of the state of Minnesota; and Archie Dunham, Chairman and CEO of Conoco, Inc.; Horst Schulz, CEO of the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company; and Truett Cathy, founder and Chairman of Chick-Fil-A, an amazingly successful quick service restaurant chain that's always closed on Sunday.

The helpful organization of the book takes us first through an understanding of the Clash of Two Worlds. You'll learn about the relationships and conflicts between profits and principles. The ten sections that follow each includes a statement of the issue and Julian's suggestion of a solution. The rest of each section is two chapters telling the story of the biblically-based executives. The ten sections are Purpose, Success, Courage, Patience, Leadership by Example, Yielding Control, Tough Decisions, Servant Leadership, Integration, and Priorities.

Each chapter explores real-life issues with some intriguing stories that will make you think. The religious theme is, of course, prominent in this book. However, while it is ever-present, the biblical message is comfortably woven into the vignettes. You'll be surprised how fast a read this book is, as you turn page after page to follow the stories.

Baltimore Sun writer Randi Henderson teamed up with author Richard Marek to offer Here Is My Hope, an outstanding collection of true stories of healing and faith based on the patients of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The writers focus their stories around the 10-foot statue of Christ in the main rotunda of the hospital. With its reassuring eyes and outstretched arms, the statue seems to exude the compassion that the ill and their loved ones yearn for when they enter the unknown territory of a hospital. Rather than being a religious icon, though, it has served to represent a place for people of all faiths and backgrounds to lay their hopes and prayers for healing.

In the first chapter we meet Grayson Gilbert, a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a usually fatal disease. With grace and eloquence, the authors tell of Grayson's unusual lethargy that led to the discovery of a cancerous mass in his abdomen and a rushed admission into Johns Hopkins. While he was hospitalized he befriended some of the small children in his ward. Still uncertain of his recovery, he left this note beside the statue, "Dear Jesus, This is Grayson. If you could just heal the other kids, please. Thank you very much." Ultimately Grayson did survive, as do many others who leave their hopes at the feet of this benefactor. Even with all the impressive scientific research that's been recently published on the link between faith and healing, this collection of stories stands as one of the most exquisite and convincing testaments. --Gail Hudson

A moving account
This book is a moving and knowledgeable report from the outside of medicine looking in -- from the patients' point of view. We learn what goes through the minds of people experiencing terrible illness, in themselves or in family members. This is not television, where heroic doctors do their best and everyone lives happily ever after. While there's some demystification of hospital protocals and procedures (comforting for anyone facing a traumatic situation), the heart and soul of the book is about the mystic relationship between faith and healing, between hope and prayer. Ms. Henderson lived these people's stories, and it shows in the carefully detailed, deeply personal accounts. The sentiment is real, never maudlin, and the heroes here are the people who persevere in the face of a terrible enemy with only the simplest of weapons -- a belief that God exists, and will hear their heartfelt prayers.

Wonderful book
Wonderfully written and researched, Here is My Hope takes you into the lives of several families who have been forced to deal with the reality of a loved one with a serious illness. This widely diverse group of people all had one thing in common--they found comfort and hope in the striking Jesus statue in the rotunda of the hospital.

Henderson does an outstanding job of taking you inside the lives and minds of the people in her stories. She takes you right along with them on their emotional journies through the hospital. This book will have you laughing and crying through the pages. Once you get started, you cannot put it down.
