AWESOME
Even though I do not have children yet - I purchased this book for a friend. It was absolutely marvelous! I could not quit laughing and thinking at the same time how true it was after watching all of my friends go through the process!! I will definitely purchase additional copies to put with my shower gifts and go back and read it again when I decide to finally have children! I especially liked the work references!

Wonderfully and honestly written
I loved the collection of poems in this book. It takes you from the beginning to the end with continuously hilarious poems relating to pregnancy and childbirth. I am pregnant with my first child and this book has helped me keep my sense of humor while experiencing all aspects of pregnancy. The illustrations were also unique and imaginative.

Wonderful and Entertaining!
I laughed so hard I peed a little! This book is so VERY true, so VERY funny, and really helps make the experience of pregnancy easier on the mother-to-be. I've been pregnant for 8 months now (feels like 8 years) and I wish I'd had this four months ago! Thank you, Ms. Hodes, for such a wonderful gift for mothers everywhere!
(In case you don't catch my drift by now, I highly reccomend this book if you know someone who's pregnant or have been pregnant yourself. You'll love it!)

Murderous utopia
Pin Yathay's biography is a unique dramatic and shocking report on the Red Khmer regime in the 1970s in Cambodia.
It contains an excellent first-hand account of the disorderly evacuation of Phnom Penh after the Red Khmer victory in the civil war. After the evacuation, the whole country was turned into an experiment of totalitarian economy (no money, no private property, spying on everybody). The main ideological aim was equality at any cost, not freedom, except naturally for the members of Angkar (the Organization) themselves.
The whole system resulted in murderous labour camps with hundreds of thousands of deaths from hunger, exhaustion, torture and summary executions of 'enemies' of the system. A terrible shame for humanity and for the ideologically pure left.

The escape to Thailand reads like a nail-biting but bitter thriller. It was a real and, for some family members, deadly escape, not fiction.

Apart from its uncontested historical value, this book should be read as a warning against the madness of pure ideologists, who, once in power, accept without the slightest remorse millions of human casualties in order to implement their maniacal policies.

For a more political (national and international), economical and social analysis of the Cambodian history and the Red Khmer regime, I recommend the works of David P. Chandler and Ben Kiernan, as well as William Shawcross's 'Sideshow'.

A Book Of Rare Quality
This tragic biography traces the story of an educated man and his family in Phnom Penh. Subjected to the indescribable barbaric cruelty that the Khmer Rouge inflicted on its own countrymen, the writer provides the reader with their sense of hopelessness that gripped their nation less than 30 years ago. His hardship and ultimate triumph is the very definition of human survival and the will to survive. Anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the plight of the Cambodian people under the Khmer Roughe MUST read this book. I can guarantee that when you finish reading this book you will undoubtedly take a moment to think about humanity itself.

very very very moving!!!!
this book should really help all of us appreciate our lives. It is amazing what he and his family went through! I could not put this book down! BY the way, does anyone have any recent info on the author? It would be interesting to see what he is up to now, and how his life is going, and if he ever contacted his son Naweth, or obtained any information.

Erma Brombeck is reborn
I so enjoyed the quips, stories and humor of the late Erma Brombeck and miss her column. Rose Mula's stories take me back there, and boy can I identify with many of them. Humor to laugh at the characters and yourself is a great stress reliever. I am thankful to the author for her witty accounts of everyday life. Forge on!

great book
I have followed this author for some time. Her writing is both poignant and insightful. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

One Happy Reader

swallowing a bitter pill:how prescription and over the count
I think the book is an excellent reference book for anyone addicted to prescription medication and their family and friends. It offers real life stories so that you realize that it (prescription drug abuse) happens to people from all walks of life for different reasons. I liked the that the book explained warning signs for recovery relapse.
The book offers practical, easy to read guidance. I also believe that the author really wants to help others and her insight to the problem makes her advice so much better than a doctor's clinical answers.

It is possible to regain your life-Must read for hope
This book is so accurate. As an addict you dont feel there is anyone else like "you", but after reading this book you feel a support, because you know that others have and are feeling the same. I would have thought it was written about me at times. This book gives many tools that you need for recovery. I think everyone should read it that has a problem or knows someone with one, but also just to familiarize themselves with the dangers of prescription and over the counter drugs, because the most normal of people can get caught up and out of control before you know it. Thank you Cindy Mogil for such a wonderful insightful-hope giving book.

Best RX Addict book ever!
This is the best book I have ever read having to do with prescription drug addiction. It deals with every aspect of addiction - not only the addict but the families of the addict. It gives wonderful truelife stories and it encourages hopefuleness to overcome addiction. I would like to thank the author for sharing her story and founding Prescriptions Anonymous.

Sybil is a Success!
What a wonderful book for young readers! It is such a refreshing pleasure to hear about history through a woman's perspective. Ms. Amstel has a talent for conveying this event with excitement that just keeps the reader motivated to read on. I recommend this book especially for young adult readers.

An Educator's View
Marsha Amstel's Sybil Ludington is a fast paced high-interest novel that grabs the attention of the reader from the first page to the last. It's popularity with the 8 - 12 crowd shows that children can still be turned on by the written word. The success of this book begs Marsha to keep on writing for this age group. More historica novels please, and soon!

Young Female Femnist
This was an excellent example of an early feminist. Sybil is both serious and light-hearted, a good famly book to read alone or together. It shows a piece of history that incorporates a young woman with fierce determination. For those of us that live in New York, it is validation that a young woman was involved in the war effort from Putnam County.

Read this Sports and Tarzan Fans
Any fan of sports, especially the olympics will love this wonderful book. If you liked Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, you will definitely find this an interesting read. The writing draws you into the book and entertains you with the details of how sports figures, movie stars, and average people were influenced by Johnny and how they affected his outlook.

A positive and different perspective than has often been written about movie stars, it leaves a warm feeling when you lay it down. I certainly hope this book receives the notoriety it deserves. One can only hope it will influence them to put all the great Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies on DVD. It astounds me they are only available on VHS when some poor quality non-Weissmuller Tarzans are on DVD. I highly recommend this book.

A Wonderfully Written & Researched Book. First Rate.
Most books are mediocre. And I say this based upon a lifetime of reading everything. This book is wonderful, well-written, well-researched, well-published. I simply could not stop reading it, and when I'd finished, I really truly felt I knew the great Johnny Weissmuller, my childhood idol. I also came to know Johnny, Jr., and have enormous empathy for this fellow, who has managed to carve a successful life for himself, against large odds, it would seem, and with little guidance. The book is amazingly candid and very moving, and virtually un-put-down-able. If you have even the slightest interest in humanity, Tarzan, or John Weissmuller, buy this excellent book. RM

TARZAN'S BIGGEST TREE
Johnny Weissmuller by far was the best of all the Tarzans ever filmed for movies or television and "Tarzan, My Father" written by his son, is by far the best of many dozens of biographies written about Johnny.
His swimming achivements are unmatched and he was not only a friend of everyone in the jungle, but of everyone he meet.
This is a must read, if you want to know the real Johnny Weissmuller. Mike Oliver

What If There Isn't Anything Bad About Being Jewish?
In Vapnyar's book, she shows a tremendous talent for integration and understand of personal feelings, and particularly, some nuances of prejudice, that we don't often consider. Most, but not all, of the stories in this book take place in Russia. Part of Vapnyar's brilliant writing style in this short book of short stories is her ability to capture so vividly, the picture and feeling of the surrounding environment in very few words, but her descriptions never seem incomplete.

The title story is particularly poignant, and shows the level of anti-semitism in Russia mostly in the 1940's, and how while it was there, it was not the same as that of Poland, which was ingrained in the society for 100's of years, or that of Germany, which was institutionalized by the Nazi party. Yet, it was still there, it was always there. And when a person started to get on another's nerves, when they were more successful, when they were more literate, when they did things that were beyond the ability of the other individual, well the answer cannot be, that I am inferior, it must be, that they are Jews.

But must it? Perhaps, if perception is reality. Even the children in her story, "A Question For Vera" are indoctrinated in some of the usual anti-semitic methods of the time, including phrenology. It is in this very story, that Vapnyar poses the question, so reminiscent of Shakespeare's Shylock in the "Merchant of Venice" when he says, "...If you prick us do we not bleed?..." But Vapnyar says it her way, "What if ... there wasn't anything bad or special about being Jewish? Katya looked around. There was nobody to answer that question..."

Aside from her incredible insight, it is so much the more so interesting, that English is not Ms. Vapnyar's first language. She is a Russian immigrant who came to New York in 1994, the book blurb says. But she has mastered the language of English, so finely, so delicately, that she can express these intricate and personal feelings, so very well, in English. She truly has broad talent. I would expect she will produce much more for readers to enjoy and ponder as her career expands.

Great read
Vapnyar's writing is so light that you barely notice that you're reading. The title story is my favorite-a very powerful tale of jealousy between two Russian women during Nazi invasion. Love Lessons is different, but great too. My favorite line (spoken by a young sexual education teacher): "It was not as if I had no experience whatsoever. I wasn't a virgin. Or at least I hoped I wasn't. Actually I couldn't be completely sure about it."

Brilliant New Voice
I first read Lara Vapnyar in the debut fiction issue of The New Yorker. I've now read this collection. She is on her way to be one of our very best writers. Her prose is simple but never kitchy. Her characters are nuanced, complex, unforgettable. They instruct us in the ways humans love (and betray) one another. Ms. Vapnyar is the most interesting new writer I've read this year.

Super
This is great book for exposing children to idioms. I first present some of the espressions to my students and have them try to explain them. Afterward, they have fun going back and finding the actual meaning. We usually do this around the time that we read Amelia Bedelia. The children illustrate an expression of their own choosing and the rest of us try to guess what the expression is. There are many extension activities to do along with this fun book. It is a great way to immerse chioldren inour language and get them excited about it. Lots of fun!

Wonderful reference book
This is a wonderful book for researching what idioms mean. It has delightful pictures and very clear explanations.
It would be very useful for children in third and fourth grade or for use with people learning English. Even though I have a master's degree and I am an avid reader, I found some idioms that I have never heard before. I am planning to give some copies to some third grade teachers that I know. Also, I bought a copy for my granddaughter.

One of the most engaging picture books received this season
There's A Frog In My Throat! is one of the most engaging picture books received this season: an illustrated survey of zany animal sayings, from lucky and odd ducks to one-liners about birds, bears, and more. Expressions are explained and the artwork is simply gorgeous in this visually packed picturebook.
