IT'S LIFE CHANGING
This book is life changing.
I think every homosexual and lesbian should read this book, it's powerful, full of love and life. I do understand how hard it is to let go,but for the right reason you'll do whatever it takes. MS. Knox, took you into a world that is more reality, than fake. even if you have any other sin, that you feel bounded; you should read this book, I have to tell you, it actually changed my life. you have to look at it this way. we all are going to die one day. just where will you go? you have to pay for every right or wrong, you've ever done. it's not just about sin, it's about love, honest to goodness love and you will laugh and cry with the characters, I promise you. happy reading.......

DEEP
The ladies in this story go through so much. Their struggle between pleasing the flesh and pleasing the Lord is a real one that every single human has to deal with. Love is a beautiful thing and these women share a deep and true love. But sex is an action we can make a choice to partake in, or to forego. According to the Bible, homosexuality is wrong. However, love is never wrong. I feel for these characters and for all the real life people who fight this physical vs. spiritual battle. The book is full of action and the passion is explicit, but this is definitely a time where the message is even more interesting than the story. How can you choose between love and God, when God IS love? It's hard sometimes.

I think I'm more anxious than anyone, other than Ms. Knox, to see this become a movie so it can be seen by the world.

Beautiful and informative
This is a marvelous little book: both captivating narrative and very informative. I've been a great fan of hummingbirds since visiting the aviary at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tuscon. The author has done a marvelous job of telling us what its like to have a hummingbird in the house on a daily basis. And how lucky Squeak was to find Ms. Heidcamp--some things just seem to happen for a reason.

Outside of the narative of day-to-day life and habits, the author offers tons of information on hummer physiology and behavior. What a fascinating world Heidcamp has opened up to me.

The photographs in the book are excellent, and there are plenty of them. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in hummingbirds, or in birds more generally...especially to someone who has dreamed of having one in their own house.

An adorable, heartwarming story
If you like birds in the least bit, you should enjoy this cute story about the tiny but spunky Squeak, the young, male hummingbird whom the author rescues from the frost and keeps in her sun room all winter long. Ms. Heidcamp should be extremely proud that she was able to make such a positive difference in the life of a creature whose species she was already following with a notebook and a passion. Her knowledge of flowers that attract hummingbirds is amazing. So, too, is her ability to stock her sun room with healthy, flowering specimens, ensure the availability of nutritional supplements and patiently regulate both the light and the temperature in the room, all so that Squeak would have what he needed to thrive. Her color photos are beautiful and perfectly illustrate the narrative. I just hope that Ms. Heidcamp someday writes a sequel so we can learn about Squeak's fate upon leaving his winter home and doting host.

Delighted throught & cried in the end - spectacular!!!
This was the most delighful & insightful book on hummingbirds that I have ever picked up - what made it so good was that my husband picked it up for me knowing how much I loved hummers & he could tell just by the jacket that a real thriller was enclosed within & he was right!!!

amazing photography
This guy is a compositional genius. These photos are incredibly precise in their presentation of subject; his intentions are always clear and free of distraction. It is this tight clarity of subject within each individual photo that holds them all together. Otherwise, I think the wide range of subjects would be too jarring (from the awesome skateboarding action photos, to the pure nature landscapes, to the portraits).
Between the photos and the thought-provoking essays, I learned a lot about the personality of Glen E Friedman. Inspiring.

An amazing departure
I have both of his previous books which I thought showcased the pinnacle of Friedman's career but the idealist takes you on a journey and shows you how broad his vision is. I don't know how one person can deliver such a wide range of photographs and images that seamlessly fit together throughout twenty years. Friedman did it and does it better than anyone. He is an inspiration not only to the artist but also the world. This book will be a classic - the essays alone are worth the price.

a picture is worth a thousand words!
i totally loved this book! definitely his best by far. the images are incredibly crisp. he has a keen eye that everyone can appreciate when looking at the book. definitely worth checking out!

My path to healing started with this book
After ending an abusive relationship that lasted 6 years, I was at a loss. I questioned every feeling, every thought I had. I had no one to turn to, because his controlling and abusive behavior had surved its purpose: I was completely isolated. I started looking at self-help books, but many of them seemed inacessable or discussed how to recognize signs of abuse, not how to pick up the pieces after it was over. This book became my bible. Each word rang true, and I began to realize I was not crazy, nor was I alone. The exercises allowed me to take stock of my own life, assess where I was currently, where I had been, and where I'd like to go.

The path to healing is neverending and always full of surprises and dissapointments, but this book helped me see that I had done the hard part: I had survived. Everything I do from now on is about me, is about healing and being safe. I pick this book up to remind me how far I've come, and to help me with the parts I still struggle with. A fantastic resource.

It Is Helpful, Plain and Simple
This book is the kind of instructional manual that every woman escaping from an abuser needs to read. Every thought, fear, or impulse an abused woman may have is discussed in this very calm, very helpful book.

The authors don't shy away from the darker stuff, and they write in a very straightforward, no-nonsense fashion. Yet the book leaves the reader with an undeniable sense of hope and excitement, as this book makes the reader realize that a new, better life is possible.

A gem--very comprehensive
This book has been very helpful to me in recovering from an abusive marriage. In fact, if you only have the money for one "recovery from abuse" book, this one is the one to get. It covers every type of abuse, even spiritual abuse, which was very relevant to my experiences in a bizarre cultic marriage in which I was beaten over the head with the Bible and told to "submit" all the time. The tone that the book is written in is wonderful. It is neither "oh, you poor pathetic baby" or "get over it, toots" but strikes exactly the right tone--empowering and empathetic but not patronizing or overbearing.

The book helps you not only analyze what happened to you and why, but gets you into the healing process. This book helped me quit beating myself up for ending up with and staying with an abuser (and having SIX children with him into the bargain), for still having feelings for my abusive husband, and for being tempted to go back. Some of the exercises at the end of the chapters were kind of silly, and I skipped them, but some were excellent. The exercise that helped me the most was the one that helped me to look back and remember why I fell in love with that chump to begin with. It WASN'T because I am brainless.

The absolute best thing about this book, in my opinion, is the final chapter. Prior to reading it, I had no idea how in the world I managed to marry an abusive control freak and was scared to death of getting hooked by another one. This chapter really helped me feel capable of choosing another partner who is not abusive. The author tells you exactly what danger signs to look for. I missed every one of them the first time, but I won't miss them again!

I was there!
Roger really nails it with this book and I should know because I was there. Roger was my best buddy. He physically pulled my lazy carcass out of bed each summer morning in 1958 & 59 and dragged me to swim team practice. (I was a night person; Roger was a round-the-clock person.) I devoured the book in one sitting and have been reminiscing ever since. The characters we grew up with and the things we got into could easily provide material for two or three more books! Let's have'em Rog!

Love, Black, Gay and Providence
This novel is a testament in a way, the testament of a man who has lived long and well, too much even and too hard, in the world. A testimony too. Every single event in this novel about a black man who became a gospel singer and then a blues singer is the crystalisation of the whole history of Afro-Americans in the USA, the whole history of each character that is living the event through, the whole past and future of a present that is both crooked and promising. That is the very dilemma of this book, a dilemma that we feel and sense everywhere, on every page. Each moment in the life of these characters is the condensation of the cosmic, historical and human past of the individual and the sublimation of all possible wishes, desires, potentialities that this individual has developed in his situation and with his heritage. The novel may appear as very pessimistic because one cannot evade their heritage. But it is tremendously optimistic because one can always choose to realize their dreams, even if the situation around limits the possibilities and the chances to succeed. The aim of life is not to succeed, but it is not to fail, hence to move forward a few steps, and that one can always do it, even if it entails a lot of suffering and a lot of pain. Baldwin is also very optimistic about the world, about human beings, about Afro-Americans because he believes and tries to demonstrate that this forward progress of the pilgrims we are is fuelled by the happiness one gets from life, and that happiness comes from one's effort to accept what may provide happiness, no matter what that is, and the first thing to accept is love, no matter what form it may take. Yet there is a limit for Afro-Americans, a limit and a contradiction : they have great difficulties thinking in other terms than racial terms. They have been the victims as a « race » of deportation, slavery, discrimination, in a word a holocaust, and they cannot differenciate between the whites who are responsible for that fate, those who have made a direct profit out of it, even if many others have been able to enjoy some improved conditions thanks to the exploitation of black slaves, and the whites who have no responsibility in this historical process. How can we put on the same level, in the same boat the slave owners, the slave traffickers on one side, and the serfs that could only survive between famines, and the workers who were exploited too in the factories, and still are ? How can we put in the same bag the pharmaceutical firms that let Africans die because they don't want generic drugs to be produced and the workers of these pharmaceutical firms who are exploited just the same, even if in another way : the research and the patents the bosses want the poor to pay at the highest price, and in this very case most of these firms are American in the world, have been produced by workers who should be considered as the owners of their work and are, too often, paid a pittance when compared with the riches their bosses get out of this work. That's James Baldwin's dilemma. He hardly can discriminate between the white corn and the white chaff, and the white chaff is the workers, those who create the riches of the white corn. Some chapters become extremely poignant when this issue is brought up here and there and when Black Arthur cannot accept to love and be loved by white Guy, just because Guy is white and considered by principle as an accomplice of what the lords of the white « race » have done in history. And one of James Baldwin's concluding thoughts is : « To undo the horror, we repeat it ». And not to repeat the horror of the killing of a black man by some whites (like Peanut for instance), Baldwin makes his Arthur die in London, in a pub where he is the only black man, and by falling in a state of amazed drunkness on the stairs leading to the restrooms in the basement, at a moment when love had been slightly roughened by life into a distance that could have been avoided if love had not gone through a storm in what appears like nothing but a glass of water, the glass of water of everyday life.

Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

A stirring work...
Highly recommended...This is an "intense" read...and you will find yourself going back and re-reading certain pages to make sure that you absorbed everything from the page. A stirring story of two brothers desperately seeking to find themselves and a true identity outside of the religious world they had been so immersed in...

A Literary Wonder
I first came across the book as a teenager, rooting around amidst the books my brother left behind. I was just coming out then, and decided to try and read it. Much of it flew over my head then, but upon returning to it as an adult, I found much here to treasure. The characters not only inhabit the pages, but leap right off them at times, and the reader feels like he would want to sit in a room with them, talk with them, laugh with them and grieve with them. As a black gay man, it's nearly an autobiographical read, showing how far ahead of his time Baldwin was. It definitely comes highly recommended from this reader.

I don't want to finish this book!
Hello Fern, Thanks for giving me an autographed copy of this book. I lost my dear sister who was like a twin to me about 2 years ago and you have helped me to come to grips such lost and emptiness in my life. Granted, I have a husband and 3 children (one is her son that we adopted after her death) but there is still a undescribed lonliness that I feel.

I read a couple of chapters a night and savor in depth of this book. I've also learned that it's okay to write a letter to my sister or keep a journal instead of keeping everything inside. And, most importantly, you do not say that I will get over it or "just go on with life." Thank you so much for understanding and for letting me know that the way I feel about the death of my loved one is quite ok afterall. And it's ok to cry or get angry or to write to her. Fern, you're a gem. And that Normy must've have been such a wonderful man. I like him and have never even met him before. Can you explain this? (smile)

Heartwarming, funny, tender and oh so important!
I am a single man and did not read this book because I lost a spouse (though I have given it to others who have). I read it because it is simply magnificent. It touches on the human condition of loss and tells us a story of love and laughter, shares a life, a relationship, and leaves us with the distinct feeling that we are better off for having read it. It's simplicity is it's beauty, and Field, who is courageous and so appealing in her story, must be a wonderful woman. Just a beautiful little book to help us deal with our difficult life journeys. Bravo!

If you are widowed this wonderful book is a "MUST" read.
Great reading for anyone who has lost a loved one to death. Fern has an uncanny ability to project the emotions of a lifetime of love through the written word, as well as the pain of grief. This book will help anyone, in particular those who are widowed, to walk through the anguish of grief. Absolutely a "must read" for the widowed.

A must read for all women
Natasha Munson is onto something wonderful, uplifting and inspiring and she's sharing it with women everywhere in her book, LIFE LESSONS FOR MY BLACK GIRLS. This book should be used as a resource for those who are looking to define, discover, or simply to love themselves. Munson uses a list of 138 items broken up into various sections to guide and encourage women on the journey of life. She shares things such as loving yourself first, not giving up on yourself, sticking to your values, choosing battles wisely, knowing your past, and a host of other lessons. What I really love about the book is not only does she tell the lesson, she expands on it, and then recaps it in an easy to read, straight-forward manner that anyone can understand and appreciate.

LIFE LESSONS FOR MY BLACK GIRLS comes highly recommended for any woman or even for teenagers ready to take the step towards being adults. It succinctly and soundly shows that success and happiness are truly in our own hands.

easy to read
I like this book because it had large type and I found it very easy to read. This would be a good book for readers who are not so advanced yet, because here you don't have to worry about difficult words. It's also funny and the pictures were a great addition to the book. It really stuck to the "My Life as a Writer" part of the title, because it just says how R.L. Stine has been writing all his life, from little comics to magazines and finally to books, and the rest of it, which wasn't all that much, was about his family. This is the perfect book I know about that will help fans learn about R.L. Stine, so I suggest you read it and see what you think.

A great read
This book is really fun & interesting. R.L. Stine tells about why he likes scary things. You get to see his early works he did as a child. You also get to find out what "R.L." stands for and when his birthday is. Very informative! If your child is an R.L. Stine fan, this is the book for them.

Laugh Your Head Off
It Came From Ohio

This is a book about R.L. Stine's growth from an infant to an adult. This book is filled with pictures, humor, and more about his exciting life in Ohio. Did you know that R.L. Stine has written over 100 books in his career? One of the reasons I like this book is because you spend 85% of the time laughing your head off. Another reason I like this wonderful masterpiece is because he includes lots of interesting pictures of him and his family, which are very unique. I have no dislikes so I can not criticize this book. I highly recommend It Came From Ohio to readers from age 9 and up.

Insightful: Both Intellectual & Very Human
An amazing integration of science, both high and popular culture, and personal human experience that ties it all together. An excellent effort at balanced presentation on a complex and controversial topic. We can all learn from this jewel of a lifetime's experience. Well worth the read!

Thought Provoking and Insightful
This book takes the reader through the personal journey of coming to terms with his sexuality. Through candid and honest discussions with family members and stories of interactions with people in his everyday life,we are priveldged to witness a mans process of finding pride in himself dispite societys ignorance. The scientific questioning of the role of genetics and sexuality was fascinating.Well written and inspiring.

Personal Interesting Memoir
Most interesting book in that it mixes stories, concepts, ideas about sexual orientation, bisexuality, marriage, A.A., etc. Entertaining indeed and different from the usual straight plot or highly scientific studies - in addition Will has a fascinating theory with respect to genes and sexual orientation
