Excellent Intro to Gregorian Chant
I purchased this complete with a copy of "Chant" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos.

The beauty and stillness of this is enchanting and refreshing to the mind. We truly enter the world of sacred monastary in this way.

Just beautiful! Pax Domini!

Grounding-Thought Provoking
While walking the reader through the daily life of a monk's spiritual journey, this author also inspires the lay person to listen to the "Music of Silence".

Every chapter deserves contemplation. The book gives everyone a direction to follow, as the hours of the day flow.

I found it even more inspirational to listen to Gregorian Chant while reading. I especially like "CHANT" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo De Silos.

If you truly need a break from the hectic pace of today's life then this book is a must read.

It has become a permanent part of my library and look forward to reading more from this author.

The listened appreciation of time
The author discusses how time can be a deeply sacred part of the hours of our lives, and why an appreciation of time has been developed by the experts of the monastic orders. Nothing is as ordinary, or as sacred, as time. Far from being an infinitesimally small unit of measurement or a means of separating one event from another, time provides the means by which the still, small, silent voice of God may be heard. This is a book to take on a sabbatical journey.

Music Positively Affects Young Lives
As devastating as it must have been for Roberta to 'lose' her husband, this unfortunate turn of events in her life ended up saving and improving immeasurable young lives in East Harlem. Often something that seems to be tragic is actually a blessing in disguise and Roberta's dedication to the violin and teaching has made and continues to make a huge difference in the lives of many children. This is a touching story of the life of an American-Italian woman and how she was able to affect the lives of young people. I greatly recommend it - especially to those in power of cutting funds for music in public places!

Music of the Heart
She had no idea where to begin. Her marriage having just collapsed, she arrived in New York City in 1980 with her two boys and a crate full of violins. Music of the Heart (by Roberta Guaspari with Larkin Warren) is a story about Roberta Guasparti and how much music impacted her life and the lives of those she came in contact with. Roberta began playing the violin at age nine, and through her life, her violin has been the only instrument that, through playing, she found peace, sanity, and control for a once shattered life. Being a violin player myself, I can relate and understand how much music can impact someone's life. Through this book, I can see how important music is to Roberta, to me, and others as well. One life-shattering thing that Roberta went through was the finding out of her husband's affair. The Guaspari family was living in Greece at the time, and the night before they were supposed to catch a flight back to the United States, Roberta discovered her husband and another lady at 2:00 in the morning on a beach. She was literally devastated. Her husband then announced that he didn't want her to be a part of his life anymore, and the only thing she could do for the next couple of days was lay in bed, stare at the spinning ceiling, and cry. Starting out again in America, she stayed with her parents until she could get back on her feet again. After realizing what more life had to offer, she eventually moved out on her own with her two sons Nick and Alexi. They ended up in East Harlem and music became a huge part of her life again. She began teaching kids of all ages at a public school that met many difficulties. Having a low budget to work with, she had to give more time, money, and energy that she ever imagined. But her school kids, their progress, and getting back on her feet brought her happiness again. This book reminded me of how much I love music, especially violin music. That is what first got me interested in this book. If you are interested in any sort of music, or want to know how much it can affect you, I would suggest Music of the Heart.

Gloria is the brightest star!
"Gloria Estefan has reached a point in her life where everything she does is amazing! She's the best!

Musical Terminology: A Practical Compendium in Four Languages

Great book for all musicians
This is a great book for all classical musicians: obscure musical terms are clarified, and the French and German translations are extremely helpful when performing imported music or original type editions of Saint-Saens and Wagner.

Musical Terminology: A Practical Compendium in Four Language
The Musical Terminology is necessary for every performing musician. It will be his resource for understanding what the composer required in the performance of his composition.
The Compendium is thorough and the cross referencing in four languages makes it unique.

Indispensable resource in four languages for all musicians
As a musician and performer it is often difficult to translate musical instruction and intent due to the use of foreign language and antiquated terms in the music scores. I purchased this compendium in hopes that it would provide a quick, efficient manner in which to translate the words and intent and it did! This is by far the best collection of music terminolgy that has ever been created and a true asset to music perfomer, teacher or student.

"They're all above me," a young child whispers with awe, as she looks skyward to heaven. Of course she's speaking of angels, those magical guardians that children are irresistibly drawn to. In the next page we see a child climbing a tree and reaching for an alluring bunch of cherries as a watchful angel stands below, arms spread, ready to catch the cherry picker if he falls. "Beneath me, before me," the text continues. Page by page we see children sledding, answering questions in school, catching snowflakes on their tongues, as "my father's" Christian angels stand guard close by. Illustrator Barbara Hranilovich complements this tender text with all the richness it deserves in swirling, vivid pictures, seemingly made from chalk and watercolors. The book comes with a read-along cassette tape narrated by Gloria Gaither. (Ages 4 to 8) --Gail Hudson

A Heartwarming Book!
I bought this book for my 3 children to share and listen to... it is so wonderful! I truely love listening to the song, and have found myself singing along with it! I highly reccomend this book! Happy reading!

Bright, shiny artwork and an uplifting message ¿ wonderful!
What a great, great kid's book! The message is simple yetprofound - God's angels are everywhere, even though we can't seethem. The positive message for children - that they have angels protecting them - and the bright, colorful, happy artwork combine to make this book a perfect option for toddlers and early elementary kids. And the music cassette which accompanies the book is a nice bonus.

A wonderful book to read, hear and see with your children!
My Father's Angels is a wonderful book that makes one feel good just reading it. The pictures are whimsical, warm and comforting, all adjectives that are perfect when reading to a small child. Reminding children that they can feel safe with angels all around them is a great concept to teach them at a young age. The cassette which accompanies the book is beautifully sung by children and perfectly matches the book. I couldn't think of a single way to improve on the book or the cassette. The illustrations in the book make me smile. I can think of no better way to picture angels. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to parents of young children. This book would make an excellent gift for parents-to-be. Grandparents, parents and friends could give this book with the assurance that it would be happily received.

Perfect Beginner's Christmas Book
This is a great book for a first year piano student. It's fun and a real confidence booster for kids to be able to sit down and play a familiar Christmas tune for grandma and grandpa or other guests and this book gives simple arrangements that sound nice. Plus there are pictures to color too so for under five dollars I can't think of a better deal!

Love it
We love Christmas and this has been a fun book for our piano player to learn Christmas songs from. Simple but the melody is there.

Lovely Beginners Christmas Carol Book
Great for children. Each song is illustrated with pictures to color. Wide representation of songs and styles. The arrangements are simple, but musical.

Note: Although this book is for beginners, it is at the Primary Level. If you're looking for a simple five-finger Christmas book. This isn't it. Great for Level II Primary however!

It's also a fun book to improvise from. There's something about seeing the Carols broken out of their standard hymn settings that sparks the imagination for creating spontaneous innovative arrangements when working from Bergerac's setting as a base.

A great Value!

My First Hymnal
This book is excellent! My daughter is 22 months old and LOVES this book. We got the CD, too, and now she sits and flips through the book looking for the songs playing on the CD. A great way to begin to introduce Christian hymns and praise songs to young children.

My First Hymnal: Seventy-Five Favorite Bible Songs and What
My 4-year-old granddaughter checked this book out at her church library and absolutely refuses to give it back. She carries it all over the house, looks for a song, sings - at the piano, in bed, in the tub. Please, please put this book back in print. A child's Christ-centered guide.

This book encouraged my daughter to read and sing!
This book is great for the whole family! We enjoy singing and praising God along with the kids. It makes a meaningful gift.

A classic...
A good book. If I have one critique, it is that the exercises can become boring to stick with. I had some fun with it by using my own stickings, and reading the syncopated parts underneath them with the bass drum.

An original! That uses an approach found in no other book.
Regardless of style, this book can help your set playing. New Breed provides a novel approach to developing four way coordination on the drum set, and it includes exercises that will improve your reading, execution and creativity. It is not meant to be breezed through, and unless you're remarkably coordinated, you won't breeze through it. It definitely breaks the direct "here are some beats for you to practice" approach. New Breed is a good tool for developing technique---especially limb independence, but it is also an excellent resource for developing creativity. Even though I am still in the early stages of using this book my bass drum creativity has taken off. I am also convinced this book also will help you to improve your time, if used correctly. Gary also provides great suggestions on how to approach playing, and practicing that I've not found anywhere else. Because I am totally self-taught, this part has been very helpful to me personally. If you are a beginner, it will probably be a bit too much for you, but intermediates and advanced drummers will be pleasantly challenged. If you don't read music, you'll need to learn in order to work this program.

I am proud to own this book
When I am through with this book, my brain will be a little bit larger. Yeah, this book makes you think. It's hard but the challenges make you into a better drummer. I've only worked on the first of 39 sections in this book and everything I do around the drumset just become easier. It's my favorite drum book.

New Dutch Swing

The jazz scene in Amsterdam is like no other. And reading Kevin Whitehead's gripping glimpse of the country's improvisational music scene, New Dutch Swing, it's impossible not to feel caught up in the author's excitement. Dating from the dawn of European free jazz in the '60s, Amsterdam has fostered jazz filled with humor, virtuosity, and creativity. It helps when the scene's elder statesmen--the motley but venerable triumvirate of pianist Misha Mengelberg, drumming powerhouse Han Bennink, and saxophonist Willem Breuker--are loaded with personality. These three musicians have collaborated with anarchist punks, prepared skits that unravel as they improvise, and--in the extreme case of Mengelberg (the scene's godfather)--performed the occasional duet album with his daughter's parrot.

Of course, there's real music behind the novelty here, a fact that Whitehead--a jazz critic for NPR's Fresh Air and numerous music rags--never forgets. Mengelberg and Bennink performed on Yankee jazz great Eric Dolphy's seminal Last Date recording, cellist Ernst Reijseger is praised by Yo-Yo Ma, and new musical mavericks keep coming forth to play at the BIMhuis, the epicenter venue of all this madness.

Whitehead's prose is highly accessible, filled with jazz rhythms and an unmistakable beat: "Stooped potbellied buttless bald on top wearing a moth-eaten sweater and old droopy jeans, with his three props, cigarette dangling from his mouth giving him that smoker's light squint, snifter of cognac cradled in the left hand, coffee cup rattling atop saucer clutched in the right, Misha Mengelberg shambles on stage to a mostly empty BIMhuis, far too early." The book swings from musician to musician, through interviews with the numerous generations of performers, and by the time you reach the appendix of recommended recordings you'll feel you know Dutch jazz intimately, even if you had never heard of the ICP or the Clusone Trio before. Exhaustive but never exhausting, Whitehead has written a classic tome of music journalism, one that jazz lovers--make that music lovers--owe it to themselves to check out. The Dutch jazz scene has never really had its due props; now it suddenly does (and then some). --Jason Verlinde

A must for jazz lovers...
This encyclopedic work about jazz in Holland will appeal to a wider readership than the title would ever suggest. Written with a novelist's eye for fine detail, and an appreciative ear for the rich nuances of jazz, Whitehead's book is a classic that belongs in every music-lover's library. One of the striking aspects of the book is the way Whitehead allows the musicians to speak for themselves - which is illuminating, and gives the book an accessibility for anyone interested in the creative process of music. Excellent book.

A Labor of Love
This book was clearly a labor of love for the author. "New Dutch Swing," paints a detailed picture of a "Music Scene," using history, interviews, biography, culture, and geography to enlighten and excite the reader. I began this book feeling as though I knew very little. Upon completion, I feel like an authority. How much more successful can a book be? No chiaroscuro here!

New Dutch Swing by Kevin Whitehead
Kevin Whitehead's New Dutch Swing is a tour de force of jazz scene writing, readily accessible to the cognescenti and the casual alike. Having immersed himself in the Amsterdam jazz community for several years, Whitehead transports us across the pond and deposits us in smoky Dutch clubs where some of the world's most creative music swirls around our heads. His depictions of the characters are especially good, and after a page or two the performers come alive as people, not just as musicians. Drawing on his extensive knowledge as a (sometimes controversial) jazz critic, Whitehead puts the vibrant Dutch improv scene into global perspective. Excellent reading; highly recommended.

Space Melodies
Since Star Trek's debut on television in 1966, music has been an important component of the entire space saga. The Music Of Star Trek, by film and TV score historian Jeff Bond, examines both the highs and lows of Trek's musical journey.

The book breaks down by series or feature film. From Alexander Courage's original series theme, through Star Trek Voyager, and the ninth film Insurection, it's all here. There is both the technical and critical aspects of scoring Star Trek in the 250 page book. The best parts of the book though are the interviews with the composers behind the themes. I paticularly enjoyed the no holds barred interview with Ron Jones, a former TNG composer, who had more than one clash with producers after creator Gene Roddenberry passed away over his efforts. As Spock might say, "Facinating" Jerry Goldsmith, who has contributed more music to Trek than any other, is also interviewed too, as are others. Cue sheets for episodes and films are also in the book. Classic series film director/writer Nick Meyer (Star Trek's II, IV, and VI) provides a short, sweet, well written introduction.

The book was published in '98---I would welcome an updated edition. Only those interested in film/television scores need to "apply within"

Excellent
Very through coverage of each series and the movies. I found it fascinating how much music existed for the movies that was left off the soundtrack releases. If you enjoy the soundtrack music for the Str Trek shows/films at all, you will enjoy this in-depth look at the creation of the music and the minds behind it.

a valuable document
Joan Retallack, a long-time friend and colleague of John Cage, has done us the favor of publishing this series of conversations between the two of them. These conversations (for they lack any conventional formality that might render them 'interviews'), which took place not long before Cage's death in 1992, run the gamut of topics. Through their amiable banter, one gets a great sense of what was going on in the oft-misunderstood artist's mind--especially as regards his fixation on chance operations and the I Ching. The talks also give ample insight into Cage's writing and visual art, practices for which he is lesser known. When not provoking thought about Cage himself, the two (and I mean both of them equally; Retallack has a meticulously rich and compelling mind, and expresses many enlightening points-of-view herself) have revealing conversations about everything from Duchamp to Joyce, Buckminster Fuller to the Koran.

Perhaps the most interesting and rare aspect of the book is the pervasive inclusion of the environmental and more mundane details of the conversations. She is careful to note the frequent occasions when Cage laughed, what he might have been cooking that day, interactions with an artist who stopped by to fix a bookshelf as a favor to Cage and to Merce Cunningham. Especially valuable is the penultimate conversation, when we are made privy to the beginning of Cage's composition process, as he begins to write a new piece on the spot with cellist Michael Bach. These insights into Cage's daily domestic life are perhaps the most revealing aspects of the book into his personality and philosophies.

For those familiar with Cage, this is a must-read. If you are skeptical or confused about his work, these talks will clarify a lot for you. If you have yet to be exposed to Cage, I recommend this book highly as an accurate and exhaustive portrait.

reading this book a 3rd time...
i consider my entire college education as a necessary a tool for understanding every detail of this book, and that use alone would make it worth the time and money i've spent on it :). it embraces every detail of postmodern theory, ancient philosophy, and avant-garde art. it makes the world a more vivid and better place to live in. the best case for anarchism i have read.

good stuff from precious minds
Joan Retallack is immensely gifted. If you're familiar with John Cage, you'll like this book. If you're not too familiar with John Cage, well, I have someone I'd like you to meet.
