Moving, intelligent, and haunting display of self
An excruciatingly lovely, honest portrayal of Joan Baez' life, from self-conscious childhood through more self-confident adulthood (she speaks of self demons that haunt her yet). Includes photographs of self, family, performances, and other public appearances. A professed non-reader, non afficionado of public (regimented) learning, Joan intelligently writes about non violence, her public issues, and relationships, and in doing so, encourages readers to make more of their own personal and public lives. Powers to be: Please give this woman a Grammy for all of her talent!!

Sensitive and delicate in the personal sense.
This is the only "novel" I have read twice and would like to pick up again. I found the truth more fascinating and heart-warming than any good fiction! Ms. Baez's openness in sharing personal information gives the reader insight into understanding her motives/lyrics and direction. It is also interesting to "see" inside the workings of one who is trying to make a difference in the world versus personal and public views of a performer. Ms. Baez literary style displays her intelligence, forsight, and concerns. I would like to read future works by Ms. Baez reflecting, as a woman, how she acquired her aspirations and confidence...familial and/or inborn!

Fine music book of a beautiful CD.
This Songo Music book serves its purpose well. It has all the Italian and English translations of the lyrics, and the music which can be played on piano from this Beautiful CD. So if you want the lyrics in a much easier to read format then in the liner notes of the CD so you can sing along then this is a must buy. And if you want to play along on Piano this is a must buy as well. The Prayer, Canto Della Terra and Songo are just beautiful songs and its a pleasure to be able to sing along.

Haunting
Andrea Bocelli's soaring voice reaches out and flies with you from the start of the first song, Canto de la Tierra. The music makes you want to cry, laugh and most of all, listen. My favorite's are: Nel Cuore Lei, with Eros Ramazotti, Sogno and Canto de la Tierra.

Excellent!
I am totally in love with the man and his voice, so I join all his millions of fans who appreciate his magnificent voice. This is one of my favorite albums of his collection, and I have most all of them. I may be prejudiced when it comes to Andrea, but then I am not alone. Buy and enjoy. I have for three years now and have not tired of it yet, nor expect to.

THE WAIT IS OVER !!
FINALLY the phantom has returned. The author has absolutely nailed the sequel to the Phantom of the Opera. The story is excellent and the descriptions and dialogue are fantastic !! This is an absolutely must have, must read, and definitely a reread. When this story is told onstage (and I do mean WHEN) I will be the first one there.

The power of the kiss !!
When I first heard that a sequel was written to the Phantom of the opera , I must admit I was skeptical. I did not think that after seeing the story as it was presented in Totonto, that anyone could step right in, and follow up right where it ended so fittingly. But I must say with out any reservations, that the author's way with words have proved me false. I , am amazed with the way I felt upon reading it. I am really looking forward to the day when this book will also be transformed to the stage, so I can relive the events . But in the meantime you must read this one.

unbelievable masterpiece
once i picked it up, i didn't want to put it down. what a story! i was really impressed. To be able to read about the adventures of Erik and his love Christine is a true romance.
for all of you Phantom fans out there, don't let this book slip by. it is a must read for anyone, even if you have never seen or heard about the phantom before.

The Perfect Gift for the "Angel in Your Life"
This was a "special find" for me. There has been a very special couple in my life & I was looking for a way to say thank you! My only child will be married this Saturday & she asked this wonderful man if he would give her away since her father is not a part of her life. Not only is he excitied, both he & his wife have been my support in planning the wedding & been there every step of the way!. They have been my very own Angels.

Cry, Smile, And Have Hope
I have always loved the music that Alabama has produced over the years. "Angels Amoung Us" is one of their best. I've read the book now and find it just and moving and as heartrenching as the song. Tears fill my eyes in places and I know there are angels with us every day of our lives. Thanks to those who wrote the book and sang the song. It gives me hope and faith in every day.

This book is a treasure
Many years ago, when the song first came out, I was told about it, but could not find it. We had just lost a child at that time and the person felt it would mean something. Finding it this past week-end quite by chance I bought it immediatley. I've already read it several times and played the CD constantly. If your looking for "SOMETHING" and not sure what it is, this is it!! It is a very powerful book. Angels come in all shapes and sizes and do little or heroic things. Try it, you'll like it!

Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield (Non NBN) (16 October, 1997)
Author: Ralph Lee Smith
Amazon base price: $34.50
Average review score:

A Fascinating Dulcimer History Book
I first encountered this book at the Detroit Public Library. I quickly determined to have my own copy, and obtained one through Amazon.com. Mr. Smith and his dulcimer friends have come through with the goods! Many historical photos round out the fascinating text and interesting anecdotes from those who brought us the mountain dulcimer as we know it today. Read how the dulcimer shapes came to be, and who the early builders were. I highly recommend this book to any true mountain dulcimer enthusiast. Congratulations, Mr. Smith!

A great book for the novice player and the historian
A great book! It is a good reference work on the mountain dulcimer. Mr. Smith has performed a great service to everyone interested in it. It is a trememdous history lesson on the development of the mountain dulcimer and is loaded with photographs documenting how it has changed from its roots to what it is today. It also identifies those people who were important in its development. A real historical learning experience for the novice player and, I would assume, the experienced, too. If you're interested in the dulcimer or just an Appalacian history buff, you will like this book.

Excellent
Ralph Lee Smith teaches a course in dulcimer history at the annual Dulcimer Playing Workshop at Appalachian State University, of which I am the director. His presentations are invariably among the high points of the Workshop. Through him, we all keep in touch with the dulcimer's beautiful heritage in the mountains, and the people of the mountains who have handed the dulcimer down to us. This charming book contains much of the exciting information and many of the tales that he brings to us each year. For people who love the dulcimer, and people who love the mountain world even if they aren't familiar with the dulcimer, this book is a treasure. Don't miss it!

The Armchair Conductor : How to Lead a Symphony Orchestra in the Privacy of Your Own Home

This little book--packaged complete with baton--is a trifle cutesy in places. But along with the whimsy it provides a surprisingly good basic course in conducting, from its history through "How to hold the baton," and simple conducting patterns. It's chock full of illustrations, jokes, telling anecdotes, and conductor biographies. If you've ever waggled a finger in time to the music while listening to the radio or a compact disc or secretly yearned to lord it over a symphony orchestra, you'll find something here to enjoy.

Too bad it's out of print!
I'm a music student, and one of the courses we must take to complete our studies is conducting. This book is a great way to learn the basics, so anyone, and I mean anyone, can lead a symphony orchestra, on TV or on audio recording, in the privacy and comfort of their own home. But be warned: you'll want to conduct the minute you get to a real live concert! It's an absolute shame this book is out of print!

Because of this book, I actually conducted a live symphony!
This book will not teach you to read music or follow a musical score, but it WILL teach you to hold a baton. It will also show you in detail how to conduct the various tempi (plural for tempo). It will educate you about the various conductors and their styles. I won an opportunity to conducted a live symphony. This book gave me the confidence I needed to actually do it! Good Luck! Have Fun!

You'll Love this Book!
If you have ever conducted to the music playing in your CD player, or you went to a concert and dreamed of being the one up on the podium, then this book is for you. It's humorous and very instructional. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys conducting as much as I do.

The Art of Piano Playing
Published in Paperback by Aperture (March, 1995)
Author: Heinrich Neuhaus
Amazon base price: $22.50
Average review score:

Tolstoy of the Piano
I'm sure anyone shopping for this book knows that Heinrich Neuhaus was the mentor of such giants of the piano as Richter, Gilels and Lupu. Well, here between these covers you'll find the reason why. Neuhaus possessed a great mind and an ability to express himself like no other pedagogue I have read. While reading his book I kept thinking I was reading Tolstoy, not for any similarity of style or substance but because I got the same feeling from both their works, that here is a great man who had lived a full life, and then had the patience and wherewithal to sit down and commit it to paper, thereby enriching piano posterity. This book deserves pride of place on any pianist's bookshelf. I thank the previous reviewer who said that it was a crime that this book is out of print. I paid a hefty amount for what looks like a slim volume, but it is packed with such profundity that I have to consider this a seminal addition to my library. Get it wherever you can, this is one for the ages.

A must for all pianists alike
This book is simply outstanding. It should in fact be standard reading for all piano students and professionals alike, and even to some extent qualifies as a reference on artistic piano playing. It is excellently well written, entertaining, funny, inspiring, and very educational. It is well worth reading many times, since the profundity of some of the advice given actually needs digestion and experimentation at the piano to fully grasp. It is a crime that this book is out of print.

Whisdom of a teacher
When I first read this book I knew almost notihng about interpritation. Since the first time I read it (because it's worth reading it more than one time) I have begun to play the piano in a totaly different way. There are plenty of usefull tips in it, although the author states that that was not in his intentions. The most important is that you must not struggle for a perfect technique or an nice sound, but those two elements should be the key to a meaningfull interpritation.

As a book, it is very easy to read since it combines personal experiences and advice about piano-playing. It makes the reader seek for more similar books in order to learn how great pianists aproached a skore. It is excelent both for the beginner and the experinced pianist, who can get an idea of how the great teacher of Russia teached his famous studends (Richer, Gilels...)

most innovative and readable art therapy book in print
After reading a lot of *same old, same old* art therapy books, I was absolutely thrilled to discover THE ART THERAPY SOURCEBOOK. There are so many art therapy books that are dense and poorly written; Malchiodi is a clear and articulate writer who provides a savvy overview of the field of art therapy in a style that is inviting and exciting. Even if you have never heard of art therapy before, this book will inspire you to want to try your hand at art and will encourage your creative process. As a teacher of art therapy, I require all my first year art therapy and counseling students to read this book and as a therapist, I encourage my clients to read it too. Bravo! I look forward to more books by this author!

It's also good therapy for artists
If you've been through art school or worked as a professional artist, you're aware that it's difficult to create artwork without placing some value on the outcome of the piece. This book provides wonderful examples of how to free yourself from intimidation and competition in making art and how the creative process itself is valuable to the soul. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain more emotional satisfaction from making art and for any artist who wants to create art without the constraints of impersonal evaluation. It has helped me to strive to create more honest communication through my work, a valuable lesson worth far more than the price of this book.

If you want to buy one book on art therapy, this is the one
At last there is a book on art therapy which is clear, well-written, and comprehensive. If you want to buy one book on art therapy, this one is excellent and I cannot recommend it enough. There are numerous illustrations, exercises, and examples of how art therapy can be used for personal transformation and healing. Also, read the endorsements, they speak more eloquently to the book's contents and inspirational qualities than I can.

The Art of Flamenco
Published in Paperback by Pro Am Music Resources (August, 1995)
Authors: David George, David George, and Rosa De Aguera
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

By an artist
I bought this book for my wife. Flamenco is the dust of the bull-ring, the flounce of the gypsy's skirt and the crazy clatter of castanets. Flamenco swaggers. Flamenco pleads. Flamenco is the beating heart of Andalusia. Flamenco is NOT a tanked-up Englishwoman embarrassing her husband in a hotel bar in Seville.

Great book to read or as a referencebook
I've read this book 3 times and still it is full of interesting details about different forms of flamenco and about the difference between good and bad flamenco. Pohren is a purist and I like that. Maybe he's a little extreme in his traditional values of flamenco but it gives a perect image to the reader of flamenco, how it should be and how it should not be.

An historical and emotional triumph!
Just beginning the study of flamenco in the late 60's, I encountered Pohren's quirky little book. Soon I understood, for it pointed the true path, a path not seduced by the Carlos Montoyas and the latter Manitas de Platas of the concert style. What Pohren was trying to bring to light was - and still is - the heart and soul of flamenco and how it came to be in the first place! A must for any fan.

For Beginners or Advanced players
As a beginning NAF player, I found this book fascinating. I read it before I bought my first flute, and I found the information on various types of flutes, construction, care and history to be very helpful.

I've used this book as one of my main texts for teaching myself to play this wonderful instrument. I also found the presentation of the TAB system to be useful as I have branched out into writing music of my own.

A very highly recommended performance guide
With The Art Of The Native American Flute, Carlos Nakai draws upon his many years as an educator, performer, and student of the Native American flute to present the reader with a comprehensive and "user friendly" instruction manual for learning to play this core Native American musical instrument. Part one includes discussions on tunings, fingerings, performance technique, tablature, style, history, standard notation, traditional ornaments, and a section on the care and maintenance of the flute. Part Two includes sixteen transcriptions of songs from Naki's recordings. Part Three is an informative analysis of Naki's role in Native American culture as a recording artist and performer by the ethnomusicologist David P. McAllester. The Art Of The Native American Flute is a very highly recommended performance guide and insightful source on the Native American flute, as well as a concise review of the career and artistry of one of the most important ethnic artists in America today.

An excellent resource for every Native American flautist
This book is an amazing collection of knowledge, use, and cultural history of the Native American flute. Its discussion of flute construction, fingering, scales, ornaments, and care and maintenance is excellent. The book expects the reader to have a basic grasp of musical notation and concepts.

An added bonus: eighteen of R. Carlos Nakai's tunes transcribed for flute. These are: December Snow, 12/13/82 song, Wioste Olowan Inkpa taya, Wioste Olowan Tokiya, 11/3/82 song, Death song, 11/11/82 song, Zuni song, 12/20/82 song, 12/13/82 no. 2 song, 11/20/82 song, Whippoorwill, Whirlwinds Dancing, Coventry Carol, Rainy Nights in Taos, Omaha song, The Colours Fall, and Crow Wing.

There is also an excellent chapter at the end of the book regarding R. Carlos Nakai's recordings and his influences. Ken Light, the maker of Amon Olorin flutes (R.
