Rob Cook never leaves a stone unturned!
As in his new book on Rogers Drums, Rob tells us everything there is to know about the Slingerland company, the founding family, the business, and most importantly, the drums. A labor of love!

If you are a not-so-modern drummer, this is an important guide to collecting Slingerland drums. Thanks, Mr. Cook! PM in TN.

Very Inclusive Treatment of a Little Known Drum Company
Wonderful pictures and historical study. Rob Cook knows his stuff!! A must for any drum collector, historian, and musician.

Something So Strong: Crowded House
Published in Paperback by Pandoras Music Box (May, 1997)
Author: Chris Bourke
Amazon base price: $28.00
Average review score:

A great story about a band that should have been huge
Crowded House was one of the best bands I've ever seen, and they made great records, so why didn't they sell millions of records all over the world?

Read this fantastic book--complete with interviews from all the band members--and find out some of the reasons. The book is detailed and raw with emotion because many of the interviews took place right after the band broke up.

It is a sad tale, but not for the reasons you might think.

Overall, it is an excellent read for both hardcore and casual fans alike.

Essential Reading For Any Music Fan
`SOMETHING SO STRONG' by Chris Bourke is arguably the greatest book ever written about a rock band. It is detailed, entertaining and informative. As well, the book is almost impossible to put down. Although the author is clearly a fan, he doesn't dodge around any contentious issues. He seems to have had unfettered access to the individuals involved with Crowded House and that, of course, is always a plus. Any music buff, regardless of whether you're a Crowded house fan or not, will enjoy reading `SOMETHING SO STRONG'. I've read dozens of books about musical groups and this tome is far and away the best. If I have a beef, it's that the Canadian market (where the band was huge) is pretty much ignored. For that you must read `PRIVATE UNIVERSE' by Doole and Twomey.

Top Read!
The ballad of Crowded House, told by Chris Bourke, is entertaining, thanks to the way it was written. What makes this biography so enjoyable is that the author doesn't tiptoe around issues that arose during the band's lifetime. Although Crowded House kept aiming at the US market, the impact that they had in Europe, as well as Australia, is equally important, perhaps even more so, than this. Unlike other reviewers, I don't think it is necessary to label the band as US '2 hit wonders' when clearly they've made an impact elsewhere. Bourke chronicles this struggle well, and top marks go to his research. Great book - must for any Crowdies fan.

Sound Synthesis and Sampling

EXCELLENT - couldn't put it down
A friend gave me the loan of this book when I asked some questions about synthesis. I read it twice before I reluctantly gave it back. After that I order my own copy from amazon. I really love this book. It is so well written. Enjoyable and informative. There is no maths and everything is explained in a simple fashion. I would like to see a series written by these two authors going into further detail on each of the types of snthesis covered.
I'd thoroughly advise it to anyone especially Music Technology students or Computer Music students.

yesterday today tomorrow
I got into computer music with Sonar and using only software synthesizers I opened up a whole new universe of sound. This book will help you on your way. A little history not much math but a lot of help. If you intend to follow this path give this book a read!

Dense and far-reaching material - excellent resource
If you have interest in finding out exactly what's happening with the sound as you twiddle those knobs, this book is an excellent choice. The author does a fine job of presenting an extraordinary amount of material - you will learn real, in-depth background about acoustics and synthesis techniques. I find myself constantly referring to this book when I am in my studio.

Great Cookbook with great historical information also.
This cookbook not only gives you wonderful (easy) recipes, but also an insight to Southern Gospel Music. They are also donating a portion of the proceeds to the Southern Gospel Music Museum which I think is really generous!!

FABULOUS COOKBOOK! GREAT SOUTHERN RECIPIES & MUSIC TRIVIA!
It's a great cookbook in the 'Southern Dinner on the Grounds' tradition -- great photos and trivia about Gospel Music legends including Bill and Gloria Gaither, Mark Lowry and the late J. D. Sumner and Brock Speer. A book with those great southern recipies alone is worth the price, but with this book you get photos, stories and more. Worth every penny!

good for anyone; fabulous recipes
This cookbook has some fabulous recipes. I have been cooking for about 19 years and this book is one of my favorites (I have a collection of over 75 cookbooks). The recipes vary from the challenging and the complex to the very simple that you can whip together when there are time constraints. Really popular at a recent potluck was a chocolate cherry cake recipe that was deceptively simple and yet was a hit with all who tried it. There is also many bits of interesting information and trivia about gospel music personalities. There are fantastic pictures of your favorite stars throughout the cookbook. The personality of the artists is expressed by descriptions of why this is their favorite recipe before each recipe is presented. This is an excellent book for either personal use or as a gift.

Steve Baughman's Celtic Guitar Method
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (February, 1998)
Author: Steve Baughman
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

Excellent, but not perfect
This book is excellent for it's creative transcriptions of some great music, and it is a fun challenge for the intermediate guitarist. However, I would not recommend it first to someone just discovering acoustic Celtic guitar. There are several other similar books that give a better base of Celtic music, most of which include some of Steve's arrangements. This book, to me, works better for the relatively experienced Celtic player looking to mix things up, try new tunings, and do more exploration. Steve definitely did not just settle for a simple DADGAD or EADGBE transcription of these songs. Rather, he added percussive techniques, haunting tunings and incredibly flavorful approaches to the songs. Yes, it is excellent, but it will never be my main book of study. Rather, I turn to it as a breath of fresh air when the "regular" beautiful Celtic acoustic music starts to all sound the same. Be warned - this book is a tricky place to start your Celtic acoustic journey.

One more thing - the CD that comes with the book is, literally, Steve's CD "A Drop of the Pure," which, while an excellent CD, is not an acoustic guitar-only CD. None of this is bad, but it all surprised me when I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews here.

Oh, yet another thing - the Orkney tuning, and others in the book, will likely make your strings buzz if your action is set low. These tunings really release a lot of tension from the neck. Again, not a huge problem, but just something to know in advance. Also, Steve is very kind and will reply to questions via e-mail.

Sublime guitar!
As a fingerstyle guitarist leaning toward's Celtic music I have purchased over a 100 cd's,book's & instructional video's dealing with this ancient music that has put a spell on me.Sadly many teaching aide's (especially book's) lack any real grasp of this music......than along comes Steve Baughman! what can I say? and where do I start? the tuning's are exotic, the rythym's will have you dancing, the melody's will be ringing in your ear's for month's on end and the presentation is flawless. If your feet are'nt tapping to this cd you better check your pulse!!!

A Celtic Sojourn
For the better part of a year, this book has been my chief source material, not only for exploring a percussive fingerstyle approach to Celtic music, but also as a means of getting better acquainted with the guitar as a whole. It's become my personal curriculum in learning to arrange works in the Orkney (CGDGCD) tuning. Challenging as these pieces often are, their exquisite beauty makes all the time spent learning them most rewarding. An additional recommendation: An Open Tunings Christmas for Guitar by the same author.

What to say to that?
Ask any shantyman in the world, what book to get, to get some useful information on sea shantys; he'll tell ya to get Hugills book. You'll find the tunes and lyrics to about 400 shantys in this book. If Hugill found more than one version of one song, you'll find em too in this book. You'll find a song under all the titles it's known under, introduced by historical backgrounds and sometimes storys, on how Hugill himself used the songs. The whole book is introduced by "the art of the shantyman" a detailed history of shanty tradition. The only thing, I found improvable is the fact, that sometimes it's a bit difficult to find the version of a song, that one is looking for because there are so many versions.

Well, this book's the shantyman's bible indeed!

This is the ultimate
Quite simply, this is the single best book ever written on the subject.

The only "negative" aspect is that the musical transcripts in the paperback are of a very small font, and some of the older folks (ahem) might need to use their spectacles.

a MUST for all sailors, singers, folk-fans, etc.
Absolutely the chanteyman's (or chantey-woman's) bible. Incredible depth and breadth. They shoud publish a companion CD!

Slipknot
This album kicks major( ) ! It starts out as a looped sample on the first track. Then it jams right into the second song "(sic). On one of my favorite tracks"Eyeless" the chorus goes "you can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes" which fades into the album's biggest and another great one "Wait an Bleed". Throghout the whole album singer #8(or Corey Taylor) lyrically is great. With the guitar riffing, the drums ponding, the dj scrathing and samples galore; the music always is pounding with the screaming vocals, making the whole album exiting and each song is different in it's own way. No soft songs! This cd is the best cd from the first to the last!

Slipknot
Awesome cd...one of the best ever! It's hardcore metal, profanity screamin' 'til the end!

Something Big Has Been Here (Retail)

In this delightful companion to Jack Prelutsky's The New Kid on the Block, an early worm frightens the early bird, four vain and ancient tortoises race to see who can get to the finish line last, and outrageous imaginary characters such as the "Know-Nothing Neebies" ("We're perfectly pompous, / indelibly dense, / we haven't a trace / of a semblance of sense") pop up as magically as any creature from The Phantom Tollbooth or The Wizard of Oz ever did.

In "Captain Conniption," young readers will giggle to meet the self-professed "scourge of the sea." "I'm Captain Conniption, / and up to no good, / you'll soon walk the plank / if I think that you should, / I'd show you right now / how I vanquish a foe, / but I hear my mother, / so I have to go." Other subjects near and dear to children's hearts make fabulous fodder for fun, including sibling rivalry, bad table manners, meatloaf, and bats. Illustrator James Stevenson's lively line drawings capture Prelutsky's goofy poetic antics perfectly, making this collection another essential addition to any child's library. (Ages 4 to 12)

great for kids of all ages
I ADORE this book. I've been reading and re-reading it since I was in middle school and still get a kick out of the bizarre, witty and hilarious poems and the great variety in the vocabulary. It's one of my "happy books" I read when I'm depressed. Prelutsky is a genius when it comes to poetry for kids (and the young-at-heart!). Get this book, if you have any sense of humor or the absurd you'll love it.

A book we both enjoy!
My eight yr. old loves Jack Prelutsky's poems (she has three of his books) but it is also a book that both of us enjoy reading. The poems are very funny and the words he uses are wonderfully descriptive and have expanded her vocabulary. We both highly recommend this book and others by Jack Prelutsky.

POet of the Century
Jack Prelutsky is far and away the best poet for kids. Hisverse is full of the joy of life and a chuckle or two, as well as hissignature multisyllabic vocabulary, and it's all wonderful to read aloud. Keep a copy in the car for the kids to read while you drive.

Great if you need the music, but not necessarily the words..
This book is definitely a must-have if you require the notes to play the tunes. However, if you're only trying to figure out the lyrics, the best way to go about this is to play the "South Park: BLU DVD" with the English subtitles on (or captions on if you have it on VHS). Then you can sing along with the movie! Neat, huh? Unfortunately, there's no 'bouncing ball' to follow when the kids do break into song, but hey, you can't have everything!

'Late

the best musical on paper!!!!!...
This movie is hilarious, and it really is hard to make someone laugh reading......it still hilarious. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are genius. This movie is just plain hilarious. This book is hilarious and a must get book for all you south parkatiers..Even if you dont play an instrument, it is still hilarious.. This book shows images of the movie. For the music stuff they show the notes tunes and the lyrics, McKay. The guitar tunes, which I play and now I can play the south park songs on my guitar. You cant too if you buy this hysterical music thingy......P.S. this book is cool to show off to people....viva la resistance!!!!!

A Great Find for the Uncomplicated Musician
This score is accurate and thorough in its likeliness to the actual movie, although don't expect the pieces to sound nearly as full as they do with the full orchestral accompaniment of the album. The piano part is thin, but it is more than enough to accompany any singer (or yourself, if you like to sing while you play.) My favorite piece is "La Resistance (Medley)", which pieces together a number of different tunes. For the guitarists out there, each piece contains printed chords and tablature. I love playing through the score and have had great fun with it! I recommend it to any South Park fan/musician, or even anyone who's been wanting to know the full lyrics (but don't waste the music - invite a musician over!)

excellent, but...
The book is excellent and very thorough and it even gave and old giger like me some insights. I mostly bought it cause I haven't played in a band or have been involved in music in years and I wanted to know if anything had changed --- according to this book it hasn't --- It hasn't? Well I need to make some extra bread and what better way than to do something I semi-loved (I say semi 'cause there were a few things I didn't like about playing gigs and the music industry) but after being semi-retired from my semi-professional career I realized it had its good points. My one concern is that getting gigs is not as easy as the book makes it seem, you have to be somewhat aggressive and if your not a born salesman (and don't like being one -- like I don't!) its a little tough. Well, armed with this book and a couple of more resources I'm gonna try it again --- here goes nothing! Good luck everyone!

The ultimate survival manual for music
I use this book with every band I produce albums for - even after 15 years in the music biz I learned a ton of things that helped me, and those I work with. It answers questions that newbies and pros ask all the time, and the advice is universal for studio and touring musicians alike.

Even if you just want to make music on your own, you need to read this book to get your basics on booking studio time, mastering, management and copyright dos and dont's.

The author's personal stories are funny and usefull. Learn from other's mistakes and your half way there with half the pain.

haven't read it all yet, but it's great
I haven't read all of this book yet, but it has helped me greatly. It will teach you how to write music, play music, buy quality equipment, and so on. A MUST FOR ALL BANDS WISHING TO MAKE IT BIG!
