Edly's Music Theory for Practical People

You need this book
This book gives you exactly what you need to make sense of music. I can now easily work up major and minor scales. I understand what modes are. I can harmonize major scales (important). I know how to substitute chords and why the substitutions work. My playing has already improved. I'm only on page 41.
Supposedly, this book has sold 22,000 copies. I recommend making it 22,001 and getting yourself a copy. I can't believe how complete it is.

Edly's not pretty, but I love his book just the same
I want you to imagine your favorite school teacher ever. You know - the one who always managed to put a smile on your face, and somehow make learning fun. My personal favorite was my grade three teacher Ms. O'neil, who was not only a nice teacher but also a very pretty woman. Yes, I was hot for teacher. I digress. Edly may not be pretty, but his book gives me the same smile and gentle encouragement that Ms O'Neil offered way back when.

This book is for people who have always wanted to learn music theory, but hate the idea of actually sitting down to try. Edly allows you relax into the learning process, and helps you to think outside the conventional learning box. With lots of great pictures and hand drawn helpfuls, learning becomes fun, interesting and at the risk of sounding redundant or repeating myself, not boring.

Edly's Music Theory is a practical book for practical people. An immensely fun way to learn, CleverJoe recommends this book to practical people everywhere.

The best book on music theory ever
I was one of those professional musicians -- and there are a lot of us out there! -- who didn't know very much about music theory. Music theory's for college cats, dig? Then I started giving lessons, and I figured I'd better know what I was talking about. So I bought this book. Edly makes music theory charming, funny, and interesting with a combination of explanation, practical example, and humour. Believe it or not, this book is hard to put down once you get going. For me, much of the book was a revelation of "Oh, so that's what I've been doing!" than any new information, but it's great to be able to understand and talk about music on a deeper level. The book is geared towards jazz and blues players, but the information is easily adapted to any genre. A must for anyone, from beginner to professional, who wants to deepen his understanding of western music!

A great story to share with young people
Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale Of A Vocal Viruosa by Andrea Davis Pinkney and Scat Cat Monroe is the amazing true-life picture book story of the First Lady of Song, also known as the Queen of Scat, Ella Fitzgerald. This amazingly gifted African-American singer, and her illustrious achievements are presented with free-wheeling, full-color illustrations by Brian Pinkney and a jivin' prose. A great story to share with young people about the joy of music and reaching for one's dreams, this Weston Woods school library packaging edition is enhanced with the inclusion of a CD of the story with page-turn signals.

the first lady of song
The Pinkney couple's biography on Ella Fitzgerald is a delightful read for young children who want to learn more about the talented jazz artist. The use of narrator Scat Cat Monroe as a device to engage children is successful especially due to his use of language. The rhymes and rhythms the authors adopt to tell the story echo the snazziness of the music at the time. Young readers will thoroughly enjoy getting to know more about the artist Fitzgerald through this story.

I love Ella
I found a children's book about her, even better. It was a great book to jive with. Beautiful pictures, and a nice history lesson on this wonderful woman!

The one to buy!
I'm not entirely unbiased -- Seth has generously praised my most recent book -- but as someone who writes on Jewish music regularly for several papers, I can honestly say that this is the book on klezmer to start with. Seth's ecumenical, eclectic taste and balanced view of the current scene make him a superb tour guide for either a first-time visitor or an old klezmer hand. As a working music journalist, he has interviewed all the key figures in this music -- even the notoriously reclusive John Zorn -- and clearly he has asked the right questions, because his chapters on recent music are insightful and zesty. And the book's lengthy critical discography makes it an indispensable guide for the listener and record buyer.

Klezmer in a cultural context - and much more!
The author does a great job of putting the technical and artistic components of Klezmer music into an historical and cultural context and following its evolution within that context, as well as independent of it. He does it in a way that is both entertaining and scholarly without being ponderous. The discography is an invaluable resource.

Spot-on klezmer music heads-up!
Having helped kick-start the klezmer revival, I'm delighted to see for the first time a book that gets the story right. Seth Rogovoy's readable account brings to life the personalities, bands, and stylistic experiments that shaped -- and continue to shape -- this hip, passionate, influential genre. Rich in detail yet down to earth, "The Essential Klezmer" will appeal, I think, to both the novice and the aficionado. The discography alone makes this slim volume indispensible; it should be required reading in any college course about klezmer music. (Disclosure: I was interviewed for the book, but didn't see the manuscript until publication.)

Very, very cool...
What a fun way to learn rock guitar via a superstar like Hendrix. As a teacher I found the book easy to understand and enjoyable to students who want to rock like Hendrix (who doesn't?). It introduces the right beginner chords, scales, and has a great accompanying CD.

A great book for beginners
This is a great book for beginners (4.5*). While it will not teach you everying, it covers most of the basics(although the minor pentatonic scale box is conspicuously absent) and surprisingly concisely. It is very attractively formated and includes a useful CD. By focusing on the music of well known Jimi Hendrix tracks the beginner can feel real meaningful progress from the start. There is also a good website associated with this book. I wish I had this book when I first started! This book alone is a good starting point and should provide inspiration -- I would also recommend David Meads excellent beginners guide to accompany this and fill in the gaps. By the way there is a more advanced Jimi Hendrix follow on to this book by the same author but I think it comes as a 2 video set possibly with a book attached -- I have not tried that (yet) so I cannot comment on its value.]

Beginning guitar: Fun and Informative
I checked out this book from the library out of curiosity. I figured that anything Hendrix would be impossible for a beginner. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book is a perfect book to start learning with. It teaches theory by demonstrating its use in Jimi's music. It is an excellent starter reference and has plenty of fun exercises to practice. On top of that it in includes a instructional CD so you can hear the ideas described and hear if you are practicing correctly. I have just begun learning how to play and this is my favorite book. For [X] you can learn to jam with Jimi!

Great Book - Only For Advanced Students
I absolutely love Dream Theater, in any shape or form, and their books are one of the forms that I especially appreciate. Any Dream Theater book is a good buy, since they help to teach John Petrucci's technique and style to any budding young guitarists out there. I am very disappointed though, that there are many errors in the Images And Words: Guitar Tab book that other people may not have noticed. For example, the lyrics to the majority of the songs are shockingly incorrect, and there are a number (at least 3 or 4 that I can think of) places where the fret numbers have been put on the wrong string (which is easily seen by checking the standard notation), and some of the tab just doesn't quite sound right. Overall, however, I was pleased with this book since despite its downfalls, it helps to teach students a better way of playing, performing, and even writing/composing music. I give this book 4 stars, the errors counting for 2 stars lost, and the excellence of the band giving 1 star back. Buy this book, along with Awake and Falling Into Infinity!! By the way, if anyone has any queries about certain areas of this book they are stuck on, or needs assistance with some of JP's techniques, I can play the entire IAW, Awake, and FII books, and will gladly help.

You can do no less!
The greatness of the best band to play this album is undeniable. I notice that the arppegiation in measure 25-30 in metropolis part one is a little off. Can you listen to the licks and riffs that Petrucci hammers out without wetting your pants? I know i can't. This book is a must have, a guide to prog metal on the guitar. And the cover is surrealistic and schweet.

Dream Theater: "Images and Words"
An excellent tab book; easy to read and understand. Besides a few errors in the tab itself (fret numbers on the wrong string etc.) and some mistakes with the lyrics (its really quite funny how wrong they are in some places) I can't see anything wrong with this book. A must for anyone who just can't seem to get Metropolis, or any other song off this album to sound right on their own.

A delight
This novel made me want to settle down in a small town like Van Dalen and get to know all my neighbors. Robert Elmer made music with words while writing The Duet. I look forward to reading more of his fiction. I especially appreciated how he wrote about matters of theology that different Protestant denominations often quibble about, helping me understand things I hadn't understood before. And although I learned as I read, I never felt like I was being taught. It was simply part of the story. I loved that.

Kudos for Robert Elmer's first "grown-up" novel!
I really was not sure what to expect from this novel. I've read many of his juvenile and youth books, and all are exciting, with twists and turns that keep the reader hooked. Well, I can tell you right now, Robert Elmer's first novel written for those over fifteen years old is wonderful!

The setting, that of a tiny, close-knit farming community in the Northwest, was admittedly foreign to me since I've lived in the midsouth since I was small. Like the New York-raised piano teacher in the book, it took me a while to understand and warm up to these Dutch-heritage farmers. But the more I read, the more I liked. By the middle of the book, I was absolutely hooked, both on the people, and what was happening.

Although it's a romance, it's not your usual fare. The two main characters, worlds apart in their cultural backgrounds, are up in years, and have seen a lot of life...and death. But this aspect of the story makes it all the sweeter and more satisfying to this baby-boomer.

Congratulations to Robert Elmer. Your first novel is a winner! I hope we hear more from you!

The Duet
From page one to The End, this book captured my senses, my thoughts and my heart. Robert Elmer has written with such clarity and *reality* that I not only enjoyed every word, but believed them--*felt* them. One of the longest-lasting gifts he delivers is the tenderness with which he communicates the concrete struggles and happy hopes of our own lives.
Grit, music and circumstance center the story; faith and unrelenting love bring it home. Honestly, I cannot look at the cover now without wanting to say, "Oh, thank you and well DONE, Mr. Elmer!"

Were ealier guitar strings really made out of cat guts???
Electric Guitars Encyclopedia by Tony Bacon
Date Published: 1939
It is about every guitar you could think of. It is about they are made of. It also mentions some of the famous people who play them.
Some earlier guitars were made out of cat guts.
If you like guitars or if you like reading real or nonfiction books than you might like this book. Or if you like guitars than you just might like reading this book.
If you really like guitars than I would give this book a 7 out of 10. If you are not really in to them then I would give this a 3 out of 10.

A guitar lover's dream book.
Bought this as a gift for a brother-in-law...after reviewing it, I've got to have my own copy. Not only great pictures of guitars but very interesting commentary. Guitar brands are in alphabetical order so it's easy to look up a particular model...many I've never heard of. I highly recommend it.

This book rocks!
I got this book as a gift and I can't stop looking through it. It has great historical info on the electric guitars and lots of beautiful photos of various models, odd and not so odd. I'm surprised at how many rock legends contributed their axes to be photographed for this publication, the Beatles, and many more are included in this feast for guitar lovers.

I'm impressed, I only wish it was three feet thick...

Useful Guide to Learn Music Theory
I know nothing about music theory and have read five to six books on this subject. Most of them are written for seating in the ABRSM's examinations or just enough for playing one musical instrument. However, this book is tailor-made for layman, which is very detailed written in academic and professional style. To me and those who know nothing about music at all, it is very good "road signal" to get into it.

Learning Music Theory has never been easier!
I never played any musical instruments or even sang extensively using sheet music, and therefore knew nothing when I arrived at college to take my first music theory class. With this book, I went from knowing nothing to being at the top of my class! Turek is just phenomenal with how genius this book is! I now tutor kids in music theory who have had it all their lives, it is that great! Thanks Dr. Turek!

Understandable & Comprehensive
I picked up guitar about 3 year ago and wanted to understand music theory. This book started simple, used lots of examples and built to an advanced level. I have a solid grasp of musical concepts that used to mystify me. I've really enjoyed it and look forward to studying volume II!

Very good
Here you'll find Elton John's music transcribed down to a tee. This is a welcome change to nonsensical 'interpretations' that conspicuously sound exactly the same as the melody line. You want to play 'Bennie and the Jets' from the starting heavy chords to the verse to the jazzy piano solo, here you go. Blue Eyes, Rocket Man, Someone Saved My Life Tonight (excellent song)... it's all here. In some instances (like Honky Cat for example), there's just no point in bothering to learn the music EXACTLY, because Elton John just improvised within chords in the first place. So it's best for you to do the same unless you want to pore through pages of the same music phrased slightly differently. Next time it would be better to include the more 'precise' songs in Elton's catalogue.

Anyway, this is a great collection. Some of the songs aren't very well known but get the album they're on and you're away. Hours of fun.

A-OK
Extremely valuable if you call yourself an Elton John fan that plays piano. Get the similar Billy Joel one too. Can you buy me the Beatles one though, I don't have that yet! It has though a couple songs that could've been edited out (Friends). The book goes to show how good a musician Elton is by the difficulty of the music!

Even Me!
I DON'T Play an instrument, but I enjoy any books that feature
EJ! Lots of wonderful pix & information. Great books for collectors like myself!
