DELIGHTFUL! TERRIFIC! JUST SWELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It Happened on Broadway: An Oral History of the Great Whire Way by Myrna Katz Frommer and Harvey Frommer. A husband and wife team of Professors in the Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies at Dartmouth College, the Frommers have gathered together the living memories cf over one hundred actors, directors, producers, lyricists, playwrights, critics, designers, publicists, and stage managers to create a volume filled with the light and magic of Broadway itself. These collected memories take us from the enduring dramatic successes of the years~ before and after World War II, through the golden age of the American musical, right up to today's megahits. It Happened on Broadway offers priceless recollections of Broadway hangouts, such as Sardi's and Lindy's; performing with Brando in "Streetcar," the collaborations of Kaufman and Hart and Rogers and Hammerstein; and countless encounters with the likes of Mary Martin, Carol Channing, Jerome Robbins, Tennessee Williams, and Steven Sondheim. There's enough theater lore here - from back stage to the orchestra pit - to entertain the most devoted Broadway aficionado.

PLAYBILL ON LINE: LIVING, BREATHING THEATER HISTORY!!!
"It Happened On Broadway" is nothing short of living, breathing theatre history. Carol Channing's first appearance on stage at a grammar school in San Francisco; Patricia Neal's subsistence jobs cutting pies and scooping ice cream while waiting for her career to bloom (which really didn't take all that long by today's standards); the advent of the Theatre Guild; Celeste Holm and John Raitt on creating the grand-daddy of musical theatre, Oklahoma; Kim Hunter on Marlon Brando; Donna McKechnie on Michael Bennett; Linda Lavin on Neil Simon and Len Cariou on Stephen Sondheim, it's all in there.

"It Happened On Broadway" is told by those who have spent the past 50 years in the trenches, the actors, designers, press agents, choreographers, directors, and even their offspring. With vintage photos, drawings, posters and Playbills the Frommer's provide us with a look at theatre history from a time when $1.50 would buy you a movie and six or eight vaudeville acts to the impact of the AIDS crisis on the theatre community to the vast corporate culture now responsible for many of today's Broadway shows. An invaluable and engrossing book for anyone interested in an insiders perspective on the business of the Great White Way.

Backstreet Boys: The Official Book

Why has this collection of scads of photographs of the Backstreet Boys proved so insanely popular? It is filled with intimate revelations about the band, but then, so is What You Wanna Know: Backstreet Boys Secrets Only a Girlfriend Can Tell, by Brian Littrell's first love, Samantha Stonebraker, and this is clearly the book that fans prefer. My theory is that the official book replicates the experience of reading your high school yearbook. The format resembles a yearbook, and it basically consists of excellent, colorful photos of the Boys at play (Nick putting chopsticks in Brian's hair in Tokyo, Brian demonstrating Nick's ticklishness on a tour plane), at work onstage, or hanging with diverse celebs (Tiger Woods and Prince Andrew, the Fonz, Hulk Hogan, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Baby Spice, Metallica, and many more). Each picture has a caption with one of the Boys' reminiscences, as if he had inscribed a photo of himself in your yearbook. The book also gives fans a Hard Day's Night-like sense of what it's like to be a small-town kid conquering the world overnight. The Boys' shrieking fans shut down Times Square during their MTV appearance for Millennium--the photo puts you on the scene, and the caption puts you in their heads. Such nice Boys, too, not like that Eminem. Brian poses with his mom onstage while singing "Perfect Fan," and confesses, "I wrote the song for her." Kevin captions one photo, "With my mother onstage in Lexington, Kentucky. I am trying not to cry too much." One photo shows AJ holding a large plastic bone and shaking fans' hands while seated on the shoulders of his "close personal friend Big Bob. I usually hop on his back. This way, I can get near the fans without getting maimed." But with this book, there is no Big Bob standing between you and the Boys of your dreams. --Tim Appelo

vibe did an excellent job of letting its readers know who the real tupac was. this book is a compilation of the articles that vibe has published over the years dealing with tupac and the people close to him. The articles are interviews from tupac, death row associates and others, along with some letters sent to the editor, and quotes from people who knew tupac. it goes in-depth about suge knight and his multi-million dollar recording company, death row, and all the people who were involved with it. the book also goes behind the scenes of tupac's shooting in new york, his court cases, his enemies and his struggles with the law, prison and trying to make it in the world. many of the articles have to do with the conflicts that surrounded tupac and his music, his lifestyle and personality. tons of awesome, colorful photos are included, although there are no captions for them so the reader is left wondering when, where and who the photo is about. overall this book is very well put together in chronological order and should be on the shelf of any true 2pac fan. we miss ya pac and will never forget you!! your spirit lives on forever!

Pictorial Life of Tupac Shakur
Through a collection of Vibe Magazine articles through out and after 2pac's life, one is able to piece 2pac's life by chronicles of events and interviews. While this may not be the most complete biography (159 pages, nearly half of which contain photos), it'll leave fans more than just satisfied. The book remains compelling from start finish, from articles written back when 'Pac was alive adding to its authenticity, exclusive interviews and brillant photos. There are so many large glossy photos, to the point that the book could double as a coffee table book for the curious to thumb through. Another enjoyable facet of this book, is even though it is a collection of articles and such rather than one continuous biography, it allows the reader to save analysis for themselves. Rather than offering answers, this compilation will only arise more questions on the two sidedness of Tupac and his often contridictory personality. Only complaint is this book can be easily read in a matter of a night, but worth reading and browsing by fans and the curious in hopes to understand Tupac.

huge fan
2pac is a legacy of our generation..he is and will always be the best, not only was he an awesome rapper, but he was also a good actor and poet. This book is very well done and covers so much. When he was shot the first time 5 times..and leading up to his unjustly death..i recommend this book to anyone if they want to learn about 2pac, he wasnt a bad man or a gangsta like most assume, he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time..or he just got involved with the wrong ppl...and like he said live by the gun..die by the gun..and that is exactly what happened to this man...may he rest in peace

Cool
I expected an official book to be a lenghty chapter book- but this had more information than it looked! plus cool colorful pics on each page. Of course this book covers their lives up to their debut album in '98, so of course its not exactly up-to-date anymore, but its cool to have. It has a section about each member that has some interesting info and old baby pics! Theres a section about their most embarrasing moments, which is always cool, and funny to hear about! Plus much more!

Great book!!
I just got this book today, and I've read almost all of it; it couldn't put it down! It was great to read about how 'N Sync got together, a wonderful story. Also the different sections on each of the group members were amazing, mostly because we got to hear what their parents thought of their son's success. But, I have to say, my favorite section was the "most embarrasing moments" one. POOR JUSTIN, he tells about breaking his thumb during a performance. Anyways, it's a well-written biography that lets us know what's going on with *N Sync outside of the public eye.

IT'S AN INTERESTING BOOK!!!!!!
I TOTALLY LOVE *NSYNC AND I'M REALLY GLAD THAT MY FRIEND GOT ME THIS BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS! THEY KNOW HOW OBSESSED I AM WITH *NSYNC AND HE THINKS THAT I'M CRAZY, BUT HEY, I CAN STILL DREAM! I TOTALLY LOVED THE PIX'S OF J.C., LANCE, AND JUSTIN! I REALLY LOVE ALL THREE OF THEM! I THINK THE EMBARASSING MOMENTS WERE PRETTY BAD, THOUGH! I WAS LAUGHING REALLY HARD AT THE INCIDENTS THAT HAPPENED TO J.C. AND LANCE! THOSE WERE FUNNY, BUT I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM!

I've known Donny for over 20 years and I STILL learned a lot
I first met Donny Osmond in 1978 and I've had the priviledge of interviewing him for a magazine article which had as its focus his role as a father and husband. In 1983 I started working for his brother Alan, so I thought this book would just be a fun review of the family I thought I knew everything about. Wow! Did I learn a lot, and I really understand more clearly now who Donny Osmond really is. I've always thought he was kind, gracious, and generous man, but my respect for him has grown a hundredfold after reading his book. Whether you think you like him or not, I hope you'll take the opportunity to see Donny, and the entire Osmond family, in a new, more meaningful light. One of the best biographies I've ever read.

DONNY'S GOT MORE CLASS THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE!
TO THIS DAY, I GET RIDICULED AND LAUGHED AT FOR BEING A DIE-HARD DONNY OSMOND FAN FOR FOR 29 YEARS. PEOPLE TREAT YOU LIKE AN OUTCAST JUST FOR LIKING DONNY. MY FEELINGS FOR HIM HAVEN'T CHANGED SINCE I WAS 7 YEARS OLD. HE IS THE MOST TALENTED AND NICEST INDIVIDUAL YOU CAN EVER MEET. THIS BOOK SHOWS YOU HIS MOST SENSITIVE AND VULNERABLE SIDE AND TRULY MAKES YOU FEEL FOR HIM. I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT SOMEONE WHO HAD SO MUCH AS HE DID, COULD BE IN SO MUCH PAIN. TRULY A MUST READ FOR NOT ONLY OSMOND FANS, BUT EVERYONE. I BELIEVE THAT IF YOU ARE NOT A DONNY OSMOND FAN, YOUR FEELINGS WILL CHANGE DRASTICALLY ABOUT HIM AFTER READING THIS BOOK.

Best Autobiography ever
As much as I followed the Osmond Family careers, I read this hoping to find all the rumors to be false. It opened my eyes to how it really was for him in the limelight.
Glad to have the MAN back......the little boy grew up.

My favorite book about Nirvana. For one thing, it doesn't sensationalize, but it doesn't gloss anything over. Having been active in the Seattle music scene throughout Nirvana's obscurity, fame, and demise, I can vouch for the accuracy of its description of the music community in the late '80s and early '90s and Nirvana's role. And being in a band that's currently climbing the ladder, I appreciated the many lessons this book has to offer about the workings of the recording industry.

Best of all, because this book was written before Cobain's death, it is not tinged with the "isn't this tragic" attitude that permeates many books about Nirvana and Cobain. Instead, the book is vibrant with the energy, excitement, and passion that swept local musicians the day "Nevermind" was released, local audiences in the months after, the U.S, and--lest we forget--the world, during Nirvana's more-than-15-minutes of fame.

Most Honest Biography On Kurt Donald Cobain!!
This book is my favorite books on Kurt and Nirvana. There are a lot of quotes which i really enjoyed and the pictures. The book starts off from when kurt was born and he was a very hyperactive young boy. So, his mom would give him ritalin which would calm him down. I feel that the ritalin started kurt off on the wrong foot. With "Natural Selection" when your young and givin drugs you'll eventually grow up to be doing much harder drugs. And i found that very depressing. This book also explains in great detail on how Kurt meet Krist and the many drummers that they went thru before they met Dave. Then the sucess which was the beginning of the end. Kurt wasn't up to being a "spokesperson of a generation" it was too much for him. The Author Azzerad actually talked to Kurt and asked him a lot of great questions.. I feel that this is the only book that you'll ever need cause it explains everything.. and Nirvana is the greatest band of all times...they'll never get forgotten because they were the best!! R.I.P. Kurt Donald Cobain (1967-1994)

Come As You Are: Awesome Book
I went out and bought this book hoping to find out some information on NIRVANA/Kurt Cobain, needless to say that's just what I found when I read Come As You Are:The Story Of Nirvana. This book is one of the most interesting books on NIRVANA I've ever read, I recomend this book to ALL NIRVANA FANS or to anyone interested in Kurt.
This book starts off by telling you about Kurt's life as a child and then how he formed the band, and about being on tour and everything in between. This book tells a lot of stories about NIRVANA and Kurt, and there is a huge amount of actual conversation between Kurt, Krist, and Dave. This book really made me feel like I was actually there, the book is so well-written that you can get a really clear image of what is going on. Not to mention there are a ton of pictures in this book, I would say this is one of the best NIRVANA books I've ever read. A must have for anyone who likes NIRVANA or Kurt.

great book,great band
This book is great. It is the first real page turner I've read in a long while. It give great detail thanks to interviews and lots of research.
The one thing that I will say about this book is that it mainly focuses on Cobain,oh well it's still a great book.

As a BSB fan you have to read it some time..................
I have got the book and I like the writing style and to know the facts as a BSB fan. I kinda think it's wrong to get money out of someone else his succes, but on the other hand it ain't lies and Nick knew of and agreed with it, so as not such a big fan anymore (NO I didn't become a hater) I would suggest it, but not too much.

TO ALL NICK CARTER FANS- YOU HAVE TO BUY IT!
Of course when I heard about this book, I ran out to the store and bought it. I immediately began reading it, and I didn't put it down until I was done. I was expecting another "teeny bopper" book, that was written only to make money, but instead I found life-long lessons and lots of insight on how to survive in today's society. Jane did a wonderful job raising Nick. The morals and lessons she instilled in him are evident, and his voice is simply oustanding. I commend her and her husband, Bob, for everything they did. I would reccomend this book, not only to devoted bsb or nick fans, but to anyone who wants to read about how to achieve their dreams. This book is a definate two thumbs up!

Inside the truelife of Nick Carter lies a talented young man
The Backstreet boys are usually steriotyped as a boy band that are loved by girls and live by the fame and fortune their success has provided them. But, as I read this book, I realized that every critic, teenage girl or parent that thinks they are just another batch of snoby, selfcentered superstars is proved wrong. I recomend this book not only for fans of the backstreet boys (whether your favorite is Nick or not) but for teens and adults alike who are looking for insparation and advice on how to get your foot in the door of the entertainment world. Nick Carter is a young man that has gone through much more in his life than most of us will ever experience and has proved himself through the words of his mother as worthy of success and fame. His mother describes in detail the events of his life from diapers to breifs. His tour life and family life. From this wonderfly crafted book you will discover who Nick Carter really is: A young man who made his dreams come true without giving up through all the hardship he went through. This book is the TRUE sorce of information on Nick Carter. Not the lies and exagerations the media creates for their own publicity and sales. "There is not a bad bone in my son's body" says Jane Carter and she's right not the media for she's the one who has raised and nurtured him. She's the one who knows the true heart and soul of Nick Carter.

Looking for the One After 909? This is it.
From "Love Me Do" to "The Long and Winding Road", the Beatles were always viewed by everyon as a phenomenon. I was born five years after the death of John Lennon, fifteen years after the band broke up, and yet, somehow, I've become an avid fan. Looking at the so-called 'authorized biographies' and such, I thought that this would be some kind of touchy-feely novelistic biography.

Boy, was I wrong!

From the minute I opened it in the bookstore to a random page, I was thrilled. Gung-ho pictures, poignant comments from the four and their closest friends and co-workers(like George Martin). Reading John Lennon's autobiography was a particularly moving moment, seeing the disillusioned Beatle's take on his own hard life. The whole book is not to be read start to finish, in my opinion. Open it to a page and start. I guarentee that you won't put it down until they prise your fingers from the book.

Don't Pass this one By. Get Back online and BUY THIS BOOK!

A New Spin on a Old Tale
"The Beatles Anthology" doesn't reveal much new history about the band; the Beatles are already perhaps the most exhaustively chronicled and dissected group in history, and there are books that offer day-by-day diaries of the Beatles' lives and their music. (There's even one book, Mark Shipper's "Paperback Writer," that's a hilarious semi-fictional history, complete with loopy footnotes.)

What "Anthology" does do is offer first-person viewpoints from the four men who sat in the eye of the storm called "Beatlemania" and present their often very different memories of the same events.

The book's release comes more than 30 years since the group's breakup. During that time, each band member embarked on varyingly successful solo careers, and also endured an unfathomable tragedy -- the 1980 shooting death of Lennon by a deranged fan. Despite the distance that time has provided from their days as the best band on the world, the living members say they will always be Beatles.

"It was a one-way love affair," says Harrison. "People gave us their love and their hysteria, but the Beatles lost their mental health."

Ringo Starr's thoughts are more poignant. It's "impossible to turn the page and say, I'm no longer a Beatle," he says. "To this day, and for everyone, that's all I am."

Fantastic, but a BIT incomplete
I can't say enough about how great this book is. I ran out the day it went on sale and bought it. The photos are fabulous, and I can't say anything that hasn't been said already. However, they are typically vague on the Pete Best controversy. I did have a great laugh at Ringo's recollection of seeing John and Yoko nude on the "Two Virgins" LP cover! A Beatle fan must.

This is by far the must-get theater book of the year. With dazzling punk graphics that will quickly win book industry awards, the volume contains the entire libretto of the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical about love and loyalty among starving AIDS-stricken artists in New York's East Village. But editors Evelyn McDonnell and Katherine Silberger wisely understand that the story of the show's creation is as compelling as the musical itself--so more than half of this volume is devoted to an oral history of the composer/lyricist/librettist Jonathan Larson, who came to New York hoping to revolutionize musical theater--then died of an aortic aneurysm the night of the show's final preview. It's an event book for an event musical.

I laughed and cried as I read this incredible book!
This book takes you through the life and dreams of a man whom I believe was a genius, Jonathan Larson. There are tons of amazing quotes from him and those close to him . This book gave me a chance to learn even more about my absolute favorite musical, and it felt like I almost got to know Jonathan Larson. The large pictures of cast members performing each song in the libretto make it easier to explain the plot to friends. I seriously cried when reading about how Jonathan Larson died and everyone's reactions to his death. Overall, this is an awesome piece of literature for any Renthead or musical theater fan. NO DAY BUT TODAY!!!!

RENT it, buy it, just get it.
I've been a fan of RENT since the day a friend played the soundtrack for me. I adore the play, and when I got ahold of the book, I adored it even more. I finally realized how much work was really put into getting RENT out to the audience. I was especially pleased to see that no one thought they had to be extra nice when speaking of Jonathan Larson. They admitted he was pushy and demanding when it came to adjusting the play. I was glad to see that he was so committed to his vision that he fought to keep it as close as he could to what he wanted.

At the same time, there are moments of plain sweetness to be seen. The pictures are wonderful. Including the note Jonathan wrote his father when he quit his job, and the shots from the stage. The picture of Collins and Angel is enough to make the book completely worth it.

Wonderful for anyone who likes to see how behind-the-scenes really was as the group was getting ready for the performance.

A must for all RentHeads
When I first discovered RENT, I heard that all RentHeads have "The Bible", which is this book. I bought it, and it took me into a world of RENT, and also the sad story of Jonathan Larson.

In the contents of this book, there are interviews with Jonathan Larson's friends and family, and also the original Broadway cast. Also, in this incredible book, lies the RENT libretto, along with pictures to go along with each song.

I learned so much from this book, and so would anyone who wanted to learn about RENT. This is a must for all RentHeads!!

Geri Halliwell's suprisingly elegant and soulful book
Picking up this book, one tends to already guess that it would contain silly, brainless ramblings of a pop singer. Former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, however proves yet again that society and the media at large, underestimated the intellect of a sex symbol (Marilyn Monroe and Madonna had the same problem). This book chronicles Halliwell's rise from humble beginnings to an insane peak, and leaves off, after her quiet retreat from the spotlight.
Halliwell discusses her bouts with eating disorders and depression with frankness and candor, and eschews the cattiness some of her former band mates have exhibited. Instead, she heaps laurels on her ex-colleagues, which makes the remaining Spice Girls look petty.
The most amazing thing about this book, is the dignity and grace in which Halliwell stays in, despite her tales of tawndry and seedy photo shoots. Her wit is that of almost a sage, and she writes with a wisdom of experience.
Celebrity autobiographies aren't usually very successful because the writer isn't completely unbiased. Halliwell seemed to have escaped the trap, and is extrememly realistic, yet still optimistic and ambitious, about her place in pop music history.
It is gratifying, at least to see that Halliwell has achieved much solo success in her native UK, since after finishing the book, you can't help but not only feel genuine affection for her, but you also feel admiring respect.

Thumbs up Geri Halliwell!
I read this book a few days ago and I couldn't put it down! Geri Halliwell is a brutallly honest and frank person ,one who isn't afraid to tell you about the more embarrasing parts of her life.I found her to be very down to earth and a very funny person. In short, she is REAL! She tells an excellent tale of her claim to fame, including the ups and downs. For those of us who like to read about famous people Geri has given us a book that I'm sure anyone can relate to.She tells it with humour, sadness and honesty, even telling the world about her eating disorder. What made me like this woman so much is that even after all the bitterness and nasty comments that seem to have surfaced from the other Spices,Geri maintains a friendly approach towards other members of the band. This could have been the ideal opportunity for Geri to have her say but she remains a lady and doesn't slag off the other girls.Good to see that she is using her fame in a positive light. Good on you Geri for opening up to us and giving us an excellent insight into one of the worlds most succesfull bands!

Wonderful
"If Only" shows the world just who lies beneath Ginger Spice; a shy, direction-less girl from the poor side of the tracks desperate to be somebody. Her recollections are at times both painful and funny, and the prose is well written. That was one of the nice things about the book - Geri wries like a person putting her thoughts to paper (not like so many others who try to cram as many 'big-sounding' words as possible to make themselves seem smarter). She comes across as an intelligent yet falliable person whose dreams of success came true, and is much the wiser for it.

I highly recommend this book (in fact I think that young girls everywhere should read it, if only to discover how damaging false self image can be). I look forward to reading the sequel "For The Record", which picks up where "If Only" leaves off.
