How to Beat MS (and the Things Your Doctors Didn't Tell You)

How to Beat MS (and the things Your Doctors Didn't tell You
Although I do not suffer from MS, my interest stemmed from how Nadine overcame MS. Until I read the Book my understanding was limited perhaps because MS is quickly said whereas Multiple Sclerosis makes one think harder. From Minimum knowledge I now have a far greater understanding of MS and how debilitating it is. The book goes through Nadine's health decline and her battle to overcome MS but the reader senses the determination of this lady and also that she has a loving family # all of which helped her win this battle. The Book is written with love and hard work. I passed the book on to a Doctor I knew he found it excellent and made suggestions for alerting people (I remain quiete on those and my comments). If you have or know anybody with multiple sclerosis this book is an absolute must Chris Osborne, Norwich UK

Great book, everyone with MS should have this
Being newly diagonsed with MS,this book has been the most helpful. I recommend it to everyone. It answered many questions that I have been scared to ask my doctor, and it helped me to ask my doctor the questions I needed to.

Best book on MS I have read.
The book has helpful information for every MS patient. Doctors could really learn something. Read it!

Inside Ms.: 25 Years of the Magazine and the Feminist Movement
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (August, 1998)
Author: Mary Thom
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $2.95

Ms., the American magazine that has reflected and whipped up feminist sentiment for a quarter of a century, is the subject of this absorbing insider account by Mary Thom, who worked her way up from researcher to executive editor. Thom dips into the feminist movement, focusing on events or trends that overlapped with the politics and interests of Ms. staffers. The magazine illuminated domestic abuse, sexual harassment, and violence against women and sparked acrimonious debates on issues where feminists disagreed, such as pornography, child rearing, and making the mainstream movement more palatable by cutting out certain groups. An undeniable partisan, Thom glosses over many fights, mistakes, and thick-headed actions, but turns in an engaging portrait of the personalities and times that shaped the magazine.
Average review score:

The magazine that started a revolution, one reader at a time
When it first debuted in 1972, Ms. was assailed by conservatives for being too radical and other feminists for being too moderate and accomodating. Yet, the magazine has survived many incarnations and near death experiences (especially in the late 1980's with Anne Summers at the helm)to advocate for women's full equality.

In the process, the magazine started a revolution whose reverberations continue to be felt even in today's supposedly post-feminist generation. Ms. has become such an integral part of the American vocabulary (feminist and non-feminist alike) that it is impossible to imagine a time when advertisers were not aware of the word (this happened for the first couple of issues)and nobody was sure how to pronounce it.

Never enjoying circulation equivalent to Time, Life or other mainstream publications, Ms. magazine had an undeniable impact on the psyche of American society. Defying conventional wisdom which held innagural issues were especially supposed to be devoid of controversy, the magazine published a list of prominent American women who had undergone illegal abortions and wanted repeal of laws restricting women's reproductive rights.

Even though the magazine itself had several writers with extensive prior experience, it was committed (especially in the early days) to non-hierarchial management and production. While this ethos would later become modified and refined, it proved these people were dedicated to practicing the equality they preached about. Ms. was also one of the first magazines to offer day care for the children of its employees.

Certainly, most people will think of Gloria Steinem, but she would be the first to downplay her role in publicizing the magazine. While Steinem admired the politics of the women's liberation movement, she also knew society would not change unless there was some kind of way to bring the "movement" to areas where it was not particulary active yet.

She realized that there were people who were feminists, but did not have ready access to the limited production mimeographs of the movement or would not neccesarily know how to obtain them (women's studies was not yet a particularly large book market). By looking "mainstream" the magazine could bring numerous converts to feminism.

Although Steinem's modesty was undebatable by those who knew her well, others (who wanted the publicity) brought elaborate but false charges against her in the mid 1970's. It is worth noting that both Ms.'s former employee Betty Harris and the radical group Redstockings have disappeared off of the face of the earth while Steinem and Ms. continue to be advocates for sisterhood and women's empowerment.

Fascinating and informative
Mary Thom has really done an excellent job with this book. Ostensibly its about the creation, development, and impact of Ms. magazine, but you wind up learning so much else about the feminist movement, about the personalities surrounding the magazine, and about the times in general. I totally recommend it for anyone interested in any of the above topics, or anyone looking for a good read.

the story of a magazine that was more than a publication
Here is a lucid and sprightly account of the magazine that articulated the new language of feminism and turned it into today's lingua franca. From its inception, Ms. invigorated and infuriated readers---sometimes both at once. Thom's telling is both history and yarn. She puts you inside the office as the magazine's staff create the voice of the feminist movement, aware each month that every word counts, mindful of the fact that the magazine was becoming benchmark and buzzword for both its adherents and its detractors, convinced that they are making history. So they did. Thom's book captures the spirit of the moment: the earnestness, the laughs, the ideologies, the personalities, the drama of life at a publication whose influence went far beyond its circulation figures

Ms. Thang's Guide to Fly
This is a great book! I enjoyed it tremendously. I laughed a lot and in this day and time we can use all the laughter we can get. Can you imagine an 86 year old woman writing all this? Well, I won't say what my age is but even so, I learned some things from reading this book. One thing's for sure. I will certainly be careful how to dress so as not to be mistaken for a "Hoochie Mama." Even though this is a very humorous book there is a lot of truth in it. So to all the Divas out there who's helping to put it right for the next generation, more power to you. To those out there who wonder's if this is a good book or not, I'm here to recommend it to you. I guarantee you a hip slapping good read. You will laugh so hard, it will bring tears to your eyes. You know it's been said, "Laughter does Good like medicine. Let your daughters read it. Wouldn't hurt for some guys to read it to so that they can avoid the "hoochie mamas out there. :-)

All in all, a great read!

Excelente!

COTA Exam Review Book
This book was a worthy investment. Before having purchased this book I was unsure of how well I would perform on the COTA certification exam. What I liked most about the book was how each answer was provided w/an explanation of why the correct answer was correct and why the other answers were incorrect. The five practice tests really helped me to narrow down my weak areas. I feel this is a superb study guide and would highly recommend this review!

The best COTA review guide ever!!
In my opinion, this is an excellent review guide. I purchased it my last quarter as a student and I am so glad I did. Nothing could have prepared me more than this book. I took all 5 practice tests and was amazed by the results. Not only does the book give the partcipant the correct answers but it also gives you the reason why the answer is true and why the other choices are incorrect. If that is not enough, it gives you the references in which you can find that information and/or additional information on that topic. This review guide was a quick and easy way to find out what areas I needed more help with and where I could find that information before taking the COTA exam. What a great investment!

A great read!
I'm just wrapping up "Do What I Say" and I've enjoyed it tremendously. Though I wasn't familiar with Cohn's newspaper columns, I came across this book and thought it might be worth a laugh. That it certainly is, but "Do What I Say" is also one of those rare books that manages to be hilarious, insightful, and hugely entertaining all at once. I highly recommend this to anyone gay, lesbian, or gay-friendly looking for a laugh and some pretty sensible advice! Let's see more books from Meryl Cohn.

Funniest look at gay and lesbian life ever written.
This book is a witty and engaging look at life in the 90's from a gay and lesbian perspective. Meryl Cohn tells us how to handle all sorts of situations with her unique blend of compassion and distain for the modern tribulations of every-queer.

A must read for straight and gay alike.
