Ouch-total dissapointment
As I read this book, the mental star rating I had pictured went lower and lower. As a PhD student, this book is not useful. Mostly, because, for me...I know the difference between sexual harrasment and normal male and female interaction and do not need to read 400 letters addressing what to do if someone makes me star at their crotch or drops olives down my shirt at a holiday party. Another problem with this book is that the author flat out insults midwesterners AND people in the dept of education....so there you go....pretty hard for a gal from Chicago studying chemistry education to respect her opinions very much. According to Ms. Mentor I am boring and stupid. Thanks. I think Ms. Mentor needs to climb out of her ivory tower for 1 second and realize that the gen xers currently making their way out of grad school and academia are NOT introverted former NHS nerds who are interested in male-bashing she seems to be writing for. She presents a narrow sliver of academic life that may have been relevant in the 1970's but comes across as totally alien today.

This is one of those "I wish I had known that" books
I came across this book while looking for something else and picked it up because it looked interesting. It is not only interesting but very readable. It is full of excellent insight into topics from Graduate School and the job hunt to "Slouching toward Tenure," etc. As a graduate student in a technical area I was totally clueless about the politics of academia. I wish I had run across this book then. As I read through it, I had many "aha!" moments: "Aha! so _that_ is what was going on in such-and-such a situation!" Even men in academia could profit from much of the insight in this book, which is funny and well-written. Much of the advice about finding one's way through the tenure maze, for example, applies to anyone in that situation. The book contains some left-wing politics and some fairly extreme feminism. Those who enjoy that sort of thing will find it here. Those who don't will not find enough to obviate the other excellent features of this book. If you are in that political jungle called academia, and particularly if you're just starting out in it, you will find it worthwhile to read this book.

Required Reading!
Emily Toth's book is hilarious and witty, while at the same time offering practical, sensible advice for women in academia--whether they are in graduate school (like I), on the market (this phrase always strikes me as funny--and after reading this book, I find it even more amusing), or already working at a university. Definitely a book worth every cent. I've already purchased two more books for friends who've found it just as useful as I have. The third-person Miss Manners imitation works especially well for this subject, without being irritatingly derivative (as an ardent Judith Martin fan, I was prepared to feel a bit affronted). I wonder what Miss Manners would think? I highly recommend this book, and am already finding myself anxious for a sequel. Ms. Mentor--are you listening out there? Get busy on a sequel!

Filled some gaps for me
Though rudimentary, this book filled some gaps for me left by more advanced texts, including some definitions that I was fuzzy on, and enlightened me as to why some things are on financial statements in the form they're in, since I don't have a business education background.

The CD contains the text, which is handy on a laptop, but marred by having the text superimposed on a busy patterned background that has some kind of periodic highlights that are particularly annoying (the current generation of magazine, book and web site designers can't seem to grasp that the point of text is to be read, and that stuff that looks nifty on the computer screen may be darn near impossible to read in print; busy photo backgrounds, light text on dark backgrounds etc. belong ONLY in ads, where no one is expected to read the text anyway.)

Also, the spreadsheets would have been more useful if incorporated in groups into workbooks instead of individual ones. You can't readily get numbers from one to another. And the disk titles are of the "sheet23.xls" variety, not helpful for finding the one you want, so you have to either have the book listing handy or access them strictly from the CD PDF file text.

Being used to technical book web sites that contain errata, new material, suggestions from users, etc., I was disappointed to find nothing new there. And the list of web links, as usual in this fast-changing world, contains a number of missing links. I would have appreciated a good old fashioned bibliography in addition to the links, because you can usually find out of print books through a library, used dealers on the web, and most really important books and texts have current editions.

Best book on the subject
I consistently buy this book to distribute to participants in my company's credit training seminars. I have used the previous edition and this newest edition, both of which are very informative and easy to read. To the author... Great Job!

Please Note
I am the author. I would like to point out that the reviews that appear here, which are dated prior to May 2002, are for the previous edition. In this new Third Edition, I have worked hard to take this top-selling, clearly written book, and add content in many areas to provide more depth to the book. There are six new chapters covering tax concepts, capital structure, business plans, working capital and banking relationshsips, accountability and control, and personal finances. In addition many other chapters have been siginficantly modified and or supplemented with new information. I hope you enjoy my book.

Effective, but lots of detailed work!
I've been only able to implement a few things. And this is from someone who has lost 60 lbs in two years. I really do like the whole program. However, you need lots of time to figure it out, if not a personal assistant to set it up for you.

My Fat Flush Plan Success Story
I do not know where to begin other than to tell you that this plan has SAVED MY LIFE!!! It has taken an overweight, tired, sick, and unhealthy woman and provided her with the knowledge and tools that have helped to transform her into a healthy, happy, energized, lucious woman.... heavy emphasis on the "healthy" aspect.

I have had a weight issue since I was 12 or 13. Always turned to food for love, for comfort, for solice, for excitement, for passion, for.... you name it! And I've done every "diet" under the sun... including, but not limited to, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, Over-Eaters Anonymous, hypnosis, behavior modification, .... basically everything except jaw wiring (which I once checked into) and stomach stapling (which I also investigated).

Last fall, while watching a football game, I overheard the announcer referring to one of the players as "a big guy.... 6'2" amd 235 lbs".... well I was 236 and certainly NOT 6 feet tall... it was, as Oprah calls it, my "lightbulb" moment. I knew I had to change my life or I was going to die. I am the mother of a 15 year old boy who needs his mother in his life and I was not going to be around long if I continued living the way I was.

I started doing the Atkin's diet, and I liked the "low-carb" philosophy that he espoused, especially liked reading his "Age Defying Diet Revolution" book. But, overall the Atkin's diet left me feeling "heavy", constipated, kind of lathargic and overall felt basically unhealthy.

Then, after telling a friend about my concerns with Atkin's, she told me about FFP in late May. Just hearing her talk about it made so much sense that I immediately went out and bought the book, cookbook and journal. (I've never been one to keep a journal, but I just started journal number five a few weeks ago.) I had seen Ann Louise Gittleman not long before that on Dr. Phil talking about perimenopause, and her newest book called "Before the Change", and sat there taking notes a mile a minute. She just made so much sense..... but I didn't put 2 and 2 together and figure out that she was that woman on Dr. Phil until I did a search of her books at the local library when initially looking for the FFP, and when I saw "Before the Change" on the list of her books, everything clicked!!

Since the first week of June, I have lost approximately 65 lbs, and still have 36 more to go.

But, far beyond the weight loss issue is the fact that I have become a healthy person. I live a healthy and fit lifestyle. I am a role model for friends, family, coworkers, and even perfect strangers that I meet. I have joked that I am like a Fat Flush evangelist. I even bought 4 extra copies of the book and 2 extra cookbooks, and created my own little FFP lending library so that I can lend them out to others to get them started. I have numerous friends who are now Fat Flushing.... all of them with success.

Just as a side note.... I have purchased and read nearly ALL of her books. I especially liked "Eat Fat, Lose Weight". It all just made so much sense to me. I even bought "Super Nutrition for Men" for my husband to read. I have a little bookcase in my kitchen that I keep cookbooks and the like in, but I have one shelf devoted to my ALG books.

I am very appreciative for what the Fat Flush Plan has done for me, my life, my family, my spirit, my outward and inward beauty, but most of all, I am thankful for my increased good health and overall sense of well-being and the knowledge that I can succeed at anything I really want to do, if I have the right information and the proper tools..... as I said at the beginning of this letter... it has CHANGED MY LIFE!!

Thank you from the bottom of my bottom for everything this plan has done for me and all of the Fat Flushers around the world.

Jamie Zayach
Sandy, Utah

I've done 10% of the suggestions, and it works!
Very happy with many of the suggestions. Just doing the warm lemon water prior to eating has made a huge difference. However, it's been very hard to find flaxseed oil.

So-So
The book was pretty good with the information that it did give. Some of the programs that were discussed in the book were not on the disk like the book said they were. Alot was left out and not touched upon like they should have been. There should have been a short section on Device drivers, just to give a reader an overview that they do exist, and maybe a little on installable file systems. I bought this book because the code was written in Assembler. I probably should have bought FreeDos instead except that is was written in C. All the information that I could not find in this book I found in the Code for Free Dos.

Great info source. Be patient if you want it for further use
The book provides an indepth analysis of the way DOS works, contains invaluable information that you can find nowhere else. Nevertheless especially in the beginning I 've got the impression that bypasses -I admit that I'm not the most proficient assembly user and it can be my mistake- some funtamental elements very quickly. (I still try to find a way to list my files without using DOS interupts as the book doesn' t really explain what exactly interupt 52h/21h does and I 've not yet really understood how the accompanying program printcds work - written in C)

i did not go thro the book till now but i heard a lot about that book

This book contains NO information on UNIX at all!.
Based on the previous review, I bought this book for a large UNIX project I am working on. I wonder if my friend from Egypt even read this book? This is a great COBOL reference though.

It has helped me out a lot whenever I do advanced DOS apps.
This is definitely THE BOOK if you want to do some cool programming in DOS. No matter if you find yourself in the DOS Debugger or in Pascal or C++, you can easely do very advanced things by playing around with the interrupts. This book shows you excactly what you need.

A Real Review
OK, the two other jokers have had their fun. Seriously, Ray Duncan's "Advanced MS-DOS Programming" is a must-have reference for the Assembler INT 21h system services for MS-DOS based PC's. This is not a "How-To" book, but rather a complete reference manual. If you're trying to learn 8086 assembler, I'd suggest Peter Norton and John Socha's "Peter Norton's Assembly Language Book For The IBM PC", but keep Ray Duncan's book handy for the details.

A little convoluted
This books strengths are its wonderful lists of plants defined by climate, a must for Floridians, who have to know if that trumpet tree is really going to survive the winter in Orlando as compared to Key West. It's also useful if you need to know how to take care of specific items day to day. Roses require a lot of care and you can always check out the Rose calender in the book to see what you should be up to.

It is not a one-stop shop, however. The book doesn't give you an overall calender specifying what you should be doing each month, rather you need to go into each plant section to see what you should be up to in that specific area. In addition, though the lists are wonderful and amazingly long, you don't have pictures or detailed information on the plants, and so can't really make a good decision without going to the nursery and checking it out first-hand. Even then, you're not going to have a clear idea of what that plant is going to look like in three years, the winter, etc.

I would suggest the Florida Gardener's book of lists for those of you who are trying to find specific plants for your yard. The Southern Living series has the best pictures for the eager gardener. This book is good for Florida Gardener's who want to know how to care for specific plants year round, or how to maintain their lawn year round. For the rest of you, I'd suggest looking at some of Tom Macubbin's other books or the ones I mentioned above. Tom is a local Central Floridian, and really knows his stuff.

Recommended for advanced Florida gardeners who want to get down to the details of the daily care they need to put into specific areas of their garden.

Good Book
This book has lots of things in it. I think it will help to know month by month what to do. I purchased this book because we will be moving to Florida and I want all the knowledge I can get.

A useful companion reference
While missing the colorful photos of many gardening books, this book is a valuable reference guide to use as a companion resource. The list of plants, attributes, dimensions, bloom season, planting time etc... in each section is a quick cheat-sheet when selecting plants. The authors also distinguish between the different conditions in North, Central and South Florida. The only drawback is the reference to plants only by common name without the latin name. Since a plant may be referred to by different common names, not knowing the latin name may leave you wondering, or unable to locate an interesting plant.

Too many errors to be reliable
I was very excited to receive this book, but was disappointed upon reading it. I am a librarian who specializes in biological information, and I found this book to be full of both scientific and editorial errors.

The authors can't decide if there are 9 or 11 essential amino acids (most authorities say 8 or 9), and they sometimes mix up amino acids with fatty acids. These and most of the other biological errors are so basic that a high-school biology student should know better. As for the writing, I found non-sensical sentences and entire paragraphs misplaced (such as two paragraphs on legumes under the heading of fruit, instead of the previous heading of legumes where it clearly belonged). It appears that the text was not actually reviewed by a professional editor before it was published.

These scientific and editorial errors are extensive and can make the information presented somewhat confusing. Even worse, it indicates a lack of quality that makes all the information presented highly questionable. This is particularly bad because the authors often push very controversial points of view, which really need to be backed up by a high quality review of good science.

If you do read this book, I highly recommend that you also read books by other authors to get a more balanced view of how to live with diabetes.

Fantastic Book!
"What to Eat If You Have Diabetes" is a great resource for anyone with diabetes, their family members and friends. This book covers everything from the physiology of our bodies to dietary plans. It gives detailed explanations of how diabetes effects the body and what role diet and medications take in the battle against this disease.

There are chapters on exercise and how to eat smart while traveling.

The authors have also included a "suggested reading materials" list.

Great, solid nutritional information for diabetics!
This book has really helped me find a way to live comfortably with the limitations put on my diet by this disease. It even includes information on the use of stevia--a new, natural (non-chemical) sugar substitute readily available in health food stores. I would recommend "What to Eat" to anyone with diabetes, whether Type I or Type II.

An incomplete plant list
The best part of the book is the introduction. Otherwise, some of the plants I see most often around Georgia are not listed - daylilies aren't in there! Other than that, it is well organized, but I wouldn't consider it a good list of what to plant in Georgia.

Great Gardening Tips for Yankees Moving South
I found Walter's book to be a great resource for someone like myself who is learning to garden in Georgia red clay after planting in New Jersy black soil. I keep this book on my coffee table for a quick reference. The material is well organized and easy to understand.

Great resource for beginners
I thought this was very helpful, being a recent transplant to Georgia. The information not only gives you the exact planting conditions, a brief history, and several ideal selections, I thought the descriptions were on target. Although yes, I find that other books are more detailed in terms of pests and may have larger pictures, this book gives great instructions specific to Georgia and the west piedmont area of the Carolinas and is a constant reference year round. This is a fabulous book for those of us who want to know what is the best choice to plant in that needy section of the garden!

NOT a comprehensive review!
I really don't feel like this book is very comprehensive. For example, for a certain disease state they will list the MOA for one drug class, but not another. I guess a good way to sum up this book is INCOMPLETE. I'm studying for the California boards and this book is better than nothing, but everyone tells me Koda-Kimble is the way to study. Don't waste your money on this one.

Helpful for PEBC's
I recently wrote the Canadian version of the pharmacy licencing exam - the PEBC's. I did find this book very helpful for studying because each section was laid out well and very clearly explains the important features of each disease and drug therapy. Unfortunately, it did not cover all the important topics. For example, cholesterol and lipids, GERD, and alcoholic liver disease weren't covered. But the topics that are covered are done very well and it makes a great addition to therapeutics notes.
A caution for Canadians - I would recommend this book but beware of the fact that not all of the listed drugs are available here (nor are all our drugs listed in it) and that the questions in the samples and practice exams are not very representative. They are a great studying tool to see how much information you got from each section, just don't expect your exam to resemble them much.

Excellent book for PEBC's and FPGEE
This was an excellent review guide for both the PEBC's and FPGEE. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. Every chapter is followed by a brief multiple choice quiz and the answers are well explained. It covers everything from basic pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutical sciences, med chem, most disease states, nutritional therapy, cancer, calculations, references etc. Note that the book is american, so not all Canadian drugs are included plus it focuses in on american law, regulations etc. It has a number of excellent appendices, index, and table of contents. The accompanying Practice Exam book is most suitable for the NAPLEX as it contains case based questions from the patient's MAR or RX profile with many multiple choice questions. I definately recommend this as a general pharmacy review guide and reference!

I wish there were more
The first thing I have to say about this book is that I wish it were more comprehensive. I moved to Florida from the north, and find the book an excellent reference. The pictures are wonderful, and only a few plants do not have them. I especially find the sections on "companion planting and design" and "regional advice and care" helpful. The book is well-organized into sections on trees, perennials, tropical plants, vines, etc. The drawback is that the book refers to plants that are not included, which leaves me searching for another reference to find out the appearance and habitat of that plant. Overall, an excellent place to start. Sam's Club has it at a great price.

BEST FLORIDA GARDEN BOOK, EVER!
I am a new homeowner, and I have bought several books on the ins and outs of gardening. This book is the best. If offers simple to read pages on different types of plants to be used in Florida. I consider this my "garden bible." I realize that it is not in-depth, but it certainly highlights the basic information on what type of plant, where to plant, and what to feed it. I have purchased most of my plants for my landscape based on recommendations from this book. I have been more than pleased with the results.

If there is a book you need to help you design your home landscape, this is definately the place to start!

Best Book ever....
This is absolutely the best book ever for getting plant identifications. If you garden in Florida, this is a 'must have' book for reference.
